Abstract We report a theoretical study of electronic excitation in CH3Cl and CF3Cl by electron impact. Momentum-transfer-dependent generalized oscillator strengths (GOSs) are calculated for transitions to low-lying excited singlet-states at the equation-of-motion coupled-cluster singles and doubles level. The influence of molecular vibration is taken into account in the calculation. The theoretical results show reasonable overall agreement with experimental data reported in the literature. The shapes of the GOS profiles reveal that the 1 1E state of CH3Cl has a valence-Rydberg mixed nature, while that of CF3Cl is of a predominant C–Cl antibonding character. A comparison with the experimental GOSs of CH3Cl provides unambiguous evidence that the 3pe state is lower in energy than the 3pa1 state. Optical oscillator strengths are also calculated and comparison is made with available experimental and other theoretical results.

We present a study on bond oscillation in CF_4 by means of (e, 2e) electron momentum spectroscopy, a method developed based on electron Compton scattering. Furthermore, we propose time-resolved electron momentum spectroscopy to visualize the change of electron motion in transient species, which is the driving force behind any chemical reactions.

Through resent advances in laser technology, it has become feasible to create strong laser field, which is comparable with the electric field that a bound electron feels in matter, and various kinds of researches regarding ultrafast molecular dynamic in such strong laser field has been activated. The objective of this project is to develop laser-assisted electron momentum spectroscopy that is expected to provide more complete understanding of interaction between strong laser filed and matter. For this purpose, many theoretical calculations as well as development of several experimental techniques have been attempted. As a result, this project has successfully provided concrete experimental conditions and guidelines for improvements in experimental techniques, required to realize laser-assisted electron momentum spectroscopy in the near future.

    2013/04/01 - 2017/03/31

    More details Close

One might expect that when an electron collides with a molecule, the probability of occurring a collision and the physical content of the collision must be largely dependent upon the angle between the incident electron beam axis and the molecular axis as well as upon the impact parameter. The objective of this project has been to open up a new research area to investigate such stereodynamics of electron-molecule collision. For this purpose, a new experimental technique, which measures the differential cross section of electron scattering as a function of spatial orientation of the target molecule and momentum transfer, has been developed. As a result, this project has successfully and for the first time found effects of stereodynamics on the cross section, which is much more substantial than supposed.

In this research project, we aimed to obtain ultrafast real-space imaging of atomic ensembles which provides the crucial information in dynamical mechanisms of photoinduced phase transitions in solids. We adopted following three different approaches: ①solving the inverse problem for the time evolution of diffraction data using state-of-art theoretical methods, ②establishing the time-resolved electron microscopic method applicable to completely reversible processes, ③ constructing an electron microscope with fs-temporal resolution and atomic-level resolution and with a single-shot imaging capability. Developing and using these methods, we have provided far deeper insight into the physics in the ultrafast dynamics of lattice systems in laser-induced solid-to-liquid phase transformation of metals, in photoinduced transformations in charge-density-wave materials, and in initial atomic dynamics in phase-change materials. Also, the mechanism of ultrafast structural changes in warm-dense matters has been elucidated unambiguously. Furthermore, time-resolved imaging of hot electrons in energy- and momentum spaces has achieved for the first time using time-and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The achievement in the present project has greatly deepened our understanding of the ultrafast cooperative interactions of lattice systems in photoinduced phase transitions.

The aim of this project is to develop time-resolved electron momentum spectroscopy. It is a unique means that allows one to see the change of electron motion in transient species, which is the driving force behind any chemical reactions. While there remains an ample room for improving experimental qualities, we have successfully made the first observation of the change of electron motion during chemical reactions, such as the three-body photodissociation dynamics of the acetone molecule at 195 nm.

International Workshop on Frontiers of Electron Momentum Spectroscopy (IWFEMS2010)から招待講演として採択された。

Various kinds of molecular properties such as reactivity are governed by molecular orbital pattern of a specific valence electron. The purpose of this project is to develop a method for imaging such molecular orbital pattern in momentum space. In order to realize this project, we have constructed an apparatus that aims to detect in triple coincidence the two outgoing electrons and the fragment ion produced by electron Compton scattering and to measure vector correlations among the three charged particles. The apparatus has been subsequently employed for dissociative ionization processes of the H_2 and O_2 molecules. Although the experimental results suffer from rather large statistical uncertainties, they are found to fulfill our expectations. For instance, the 2_<Sδ_g> electron orbital of the H_2 molecule has been observed in momentum space as what is elongated in the direction perpendicular to the molecular axis, which is well known to be stretched along the molecular axis in position space. This observation is due entirely to nature of Fourier transform. On the other hand, for the 2_<Pδ_u> orbital of the molecule, the p-type orbital nature, which lobes and a nodal plane lie in the direction parallel and perpendicular to the molecular axis respectively, has been clearly observed. In this way, we have successfully demonstrated for the first time that looking at molecular orbitals in the three dimensional form is totally possible. The achievements of this project has been highly evaluated as pioneering work for molecular orbital imaging, opening the door for detailed studies on bound electronic wave functions of molecules. This work has been invited to a broad range of international and domestic conferences (40 invited talks) and The Chemical Society of Japan (CSJ) Award for Creative Work has been provided to the head investigator in 2008 March.

We have successfully designed and constructed a new apparatus of coincidence velocity imaging spectrometer for the study of angular correlations between photoelectrons and photofragments. Using this apparatus, we have measured momentum correlation patterns between O1s photoelectrons and photofragments of CO^+ and O^+ at the photon energy above the ionization threshold of O1s of CO_2 molecules. And we have found that the O1s photoelectron angular distribution pattern violate the inversion symmetry. We have also succeeded in measuring the C1s photoelectron angular distribution patterns of C_2H_2 molecules for each dissociation channel by the triple coincidence. For asymmetric dissociation channels, the C 1s photoelectron angular distribution patterns violate the inversion symmetry. This implies that the core-hole memory is preserved in the photofragments.

Spectrosc.,invited paper]。

Through the last three decades of studies of binary (e,2e) spectroscopy or electron momentum spectroscopy (EMS), it has been demonstrated that the ionization reaction near the Bethe ridge is a sensitive probe for electronic structure and electron correlation. In particular, the ability to look at individual molecular orbitals in momentum space is the remarkable feature of this technique. However, EMS has not yet reached the stage of full use of its ability for intensive investigation on electronic structure of molecules. The reason for this may have been twofold; (1) a more complete knowledge of the binary (e,2e) reaction mechanism is an ever-increasing necessity as sophistication of experiments increases, and (2) the present EMS experiments measure averages over all orientations of gaseous molecules, resulting in enormous loss of information on electronic structure, anisotropy of the target wavefunction in particular. However, small cross section involved in the binary (e,2e) reaction has hindered one from developing EMS satisfactorily. Under these circumstances, we have constructed an electron-electron-fragment ion triple coincidence spectrometer. The spectrometer features remarkably high sensitivity for the two outgoing electrons by simultaneous detection in energy and momentum, and further it enables us to carry out (e,2e) experiments with fixed-in-space molecules based on their axial recoil fragmentation. By taking advantage of multichannel detection in. the spectrometer, we have successfully applied it to studies on collision dynamics of ionization excitation processes of the hydrogen molecule and directional momentum densities of the oxygen molecule. These are the first observation of molecular frame (e,2e) cross sections.

The present research project aims at determination of wavefunctional forms of molecules in the momentum space by the use of electron momentum spectroscopy(EMS). EMS makes use of inelastic electron scattering accompanied with ionization transition of molecules induced by electron collision. It is possible to determine wavefunctional form of individual orbitals, and through the Fourier transformation wavefunction of real (position) space can be obtained. Further aimed at is to understand the mechanism of molecular recognition in terms of the wavefunctional forms of orbitals such as H0M0. The difficulties of this EMS lies in small scattering cross section, which results in low signal to noise ratio in spite of a long data-accumulation period, and hence it is very difficult to obtain quantitative data. In crder to overcome this difficulty we have constructed a new spectrometer by making use of two-dimensional detector. The major parts of this instrument were manufactured at the machine shop of the IMRAM, Tohoku University. The budget of the fiscal year 2001 was mainly appropriated for the materials to construct the spectrometer. As a result, we have succeeded in improving the detection efficiency significantly. By using the newly built spectrometer, the following topics have been challenged in the fiscal year 2002. 1. Characterization of H0M0 and NHOMO of glyoxal and biacetyl through impact energy dependence of electron momentum distribution. 2. Higher excited states of CO. 3. Higher excited states of Hydrogen molecular ion 4. Momentum distribution of outer orbitals of N_2O. At present, the chamber is being modified in order to be equipped with high-temperture nozzle, which makes it possible to extend the target to molecules with low molecules with low vapor pressure, such as glycine and adenine.

Electron momentum spectroscopy (EMS) allows us to measure molecular orbital pattern. It. consists of a high-energy electron-impact ionization experiment in which kinematics of all the electrons are fully determined with coincident detection of the two outgoing electrons. While a variety of molecular orbitals have been widely studied by EMS, the resulting information is limited only to the radial part of wavefunction due to randomly oriented target molecules. This project has aimed to develop a new method, based on EMS, for looking at three-dimensional orbital patterns by further coincident detection of fragment-ion. Within the period of the present grant-in-aid the following attempts have been made. 1. An electronic circuit and a fragment-ton detector have been constructed. By combining these with the present EMS spectrometer an apparatus for this project has been completed. 2. Coincidence experiments for inelastically scattered electrons and fragment-tons, which are generated by the electron-impact inner-shell excitation, have been carried out for nitrogen molecule. While coincidence signal has been successfully detected, the statistics is not good. This observation indicates that the imaging technique is best suited for fragment-ion detection in this project. 3. Angular correlations between photoelectrons and fragment-ions have been studied for several diatomic molecules. From comparison of experiments and theory it has been found that most of valence-shell ionization transitions are followed by the fast ion dissociation processes, and can be used for this project. 4. A new EMS apparatus has been constructed, where for the two outgoing electrons two position-sensitive detectors are employed. Their ability of simultaneous energy- and angle-dispersive measurements gives rise to considerable improvement in data gathering speed. Application of the imaging technique to fragment-ion detection as well as the electrons are under consideration in order to raise the methodology here to become brand-new spectroscopy for orbital pattern imaging.

Properties of molecules are determined by their wave function. By coincident measurements of energy and momentum of the inelastically scattered electron and the ionized electron produced simultaneously, it is possible to determine the wave function of a selected orbital of the target molecule. This technique is called "electron momentum spectroscopy" and has been developed so far by several groups in Australia, U.S.A., and Canada. Being the signals so weak, however, both resolution and S/N ratio are insufficient for quantitative analysis. This project has aimed at a development of a more efficient as well as high-resolution apparatus. A 2-dimensional detector has been purchased, and coincidence detection electronics and electron sources have been constructed with the present grant in aid together with a chamber equipped with a turbomolecular pump to make the apparatus. The specification of the total system has been confirmed with He, about which wave functions have been accurately determined. So far functional forms of HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital) of glyoxal (CィイD22ィエD2HィイD22ィエD2OィイD22ィエD2) molecule has been studied with this system, and preliminary results have been sent to an international conference (Many-Particle Spectroscopy of Atoms, Molecules and Surfaces) which is going to be held at Halle, Germany, this summer.

In modern chemistry, the basis on understanding of molecular properties and reactivities is the wavefunction. Fukui's theory, which won a Nobel prize, is just an exammple. Ususally, however, the wavefunction is understood to be an abstract concept, not as an real physical existence. It is because it is rare that the wavefunction is measured directly. In this project it is aimed to establish (e, 2e) spectroscopy which makes it possible to determine wavefunctions. Thus a spectrometer, which consists of spherical electron analyzer and multichannel detectors, has been developed. It has been found that the energy resolution, momentum resolution and momentum range covered are 1.5eV,0.2au., and 3.5au., respectively. This spectrometer features in fast compilation of data owing to multichannel detection. Using this spectrometer electronic states of thiols including hydrogen sulfide and furan are studied, which has been published already.

In Compton scattering experiments, monochromatic X-ray photons are inelastically scattered, and scattered X-ray photons are detected as a function of direction and energy. In (X,eX) spectroscopy, in addition to X-ray photons, coincident recoil electrons are measure also as a function of energy and direction. Then, by the use of momentum coservation and energy conservation, the initial electronic state can completely described. Although pointed out in earlier times, (X,eX) signal has never been observed because of experimental difficulties. In order for this goal to be achieved, excitation X-rays should be strong, scattered X-rays should be efficiently collected, and recoil electron should be discriminated from electrons from different origin, ex.photoelectron. In this study, efficient X-ray spectrometera and an electron analyzer are developed in order to observe (X,eX) phenomenon. A monochromator having a spherically bent Si (440) crystal and a spectrometer having a singly bent graphite (004) crystal were constructed. By the use of these, very weak X-ray Raman scattering was observed (Reference 1). Then, a single spherical electrostatic analyzer was constructed, which consists of an inner sphere of 64 mm in diameter and an oute sphere of 86 mm in diameter. The resolution was 2 eV as expected, and (e, 2e) phenomena which is an electron analogure of (X,eX) were observed (submitted for publication). By combining these elements (X,eX) measurements were carried out and coincident signals were observed. They might, however, originate from photoelectron, and we are still trying to make it sure whether they are (X,eX) signals or not.
