Coronavirus disease 2019 dramatically changed people’s behavior because of the need to adhere to infection prevention and to overcome general adversity resulting from the implementation of infection prevention measures. However, coping behavior has not been fully distinguished from risk perception, and a comprehensive picture of demographic, risk-perception, and psychobehavioral factors that influence the major coping-behavior factors remain to be elucidated. In this study, we recruited 2,885 Japanese participants. Major coping-behavior and risk-perception factors were identified via exploratory factor analysis of 50 candidate items. Then, we conducted a hierarchical multiple regression analysis to investigate factors associated with each coping-behavior factor. We identified four types of coping behavior [CB1 (mask-wearing), CB2 (information-seeking), CB3 (resistance to social stagnation), and CB4 (infection-prevention)] and three risk-perception factors [RP1 (shortages of daily necessities), RP2 (medical concerns), and RP3 (socioeconomic concerns)]. CB1 was positively associated with female sex and etiquette. CB2 was positively related to RP1 and RP3. CB3 was positively related to RP1 and leadership, and negatively associated with etiquette. CB4 was positively associated with female sex, etiquette, and active well-being. This parsimonious model may help to elucidate essential social dynamics and provide a theoretical framework for coping behavior during a pandemic.

Background Studies on the survivors of the 2011 Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami have revealed eight factors, called power to live, which are closely related to resilience and effective coping after intense and prolonged stress. However, whether the eight factors, which were examined in adults, are applicable to children is unclear. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether the eight-factor structure of power to live was present since late childhood. Method A 34-item power to live questionnaire was filled by middle- to upper-grade elementary (n = 378) and junior high school students (n = 456). Moreover, because elementary school students may lack introspective ability, their power to live was evaluated through a parental assessment (n = 358). Additionally, we examined the relationship between each power to live factor and questions regarding disaster prevention awareness among 25 elementary school students. Results The results from confirmatory factor analysis for factor structure revealed generally acceptable fit indices. The reports from elementary school students and their parents significantly positively correlated with each power to live factor. Although reliability indices for factors such as stubbornness, etiquette, self-transcendence, and active well-being were not good for elementary school students, the reliability indices for all factors, excluding stubbornness, increased in junior high school students. Moreover, we identified a correlation between problem-solving, altruism, and emotional regulation and questionnaire items regarding awareness of disaster prevention in elementary school students. Conclusion Our results suggest that although factors common to adults, such as leadership, problem-solving, altruism, and emotional regulation, were identified at the elementary school stage, some factors, such as stubbornness, are in the process of being formed. Future studies should examine the developmental changes assumed to underlie these factors and their relationship to experience and neurodevelopmental basis.

Mutual help is common in human society, particularly during a disaster. The psychological processes underlying such social support are of interest in social and evolutionary psychology, as well as in the promotion of community resilience. However, research in terms of personality factors or support types is sporadic and has yet to address actual emergency situations. In this study, we analyzed survey data from survivors of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. The data included five types of social support occurring during the evacuation from a potential tsunami area: providing and receiving actual help and oral encouragement, as well as perceived support. The personality factor items included the Big Five dimensions and eight "power to live" factors, which were identified as advantageous for survival during this disaster. While none of the Big Five dimensions were associated with social support, six of the power to live factors were. Altruism, problem solving, etiquette, and self-transcendence contributed to the provision of actual help. Leadership and active well-being contributed to oral encouragement with the latter contributing also to perceived support. The findings were largely consistent with the literature in a non-emergency context. The relevance of the majority of these pro-survival personality factors to social support appeared to support the view that the propensity to cooperate in service of human survival in a disaster situation is primarily a social, rather than an individual, phenomenon, and encourages research on the mechanisms underlying how personality factors provide a benefit to both the individual and their community.

<p>This study clarified some psychological mechanisms related to uncooperative decisions by considering the trends of regional differences in emotions related to reconstruction activities. We administered an internet-based questionnaire survey of 779 Japanese people from eight regions reflecting various geographical distances and levels of damage from the disaster in 2011 or previous disasters. Exploratory factor analysis results showed that eight emotional evaluations for supporters and dissenters of reconstruction activities were grouped into two common structures: positive and negative. Analysis of variance results showed that among supporters, there were no regional differences for high positive emotions or low negative emotions. For dissenters, current damage and historical damage were significantly associated with negative emotions and suppressed positive emotions. These results indicate that empathy resources such as damage from a past disaster are associated with people's emotional state or attitudes related to reconstruction activities.</p>

&nbsp; The paradoxical thought rebound effect following attempted thought suppression has been well documented. The present study examined the after-effects of attempted thought suppression and expression of two distinct facets of pride ("authentic" and "hubristic"). One hundred and eighty-four college students completed the Twenty Statements Test (TST; respond to the question &ldquo;Who am I ?&rdquo;) under following five conditions; (1) suppressing authentic pride (AP), (2) actively expressing AP, (3) suppressing hubristic pride (HP), (4) actively expressing HP, or (5) without any restrictions. Then, all participants completed the TST without any restrictions. The results showed that suppressing any kinds of pride itself was difficult, and that expressing hubristic pride in the first TST caused a decrease in negative self-descriptions in the second TST.

Results revealed that, the participants felt that the lip balm with lemon essences made their lips smoother compared to the lip balms without natural essences and with vanilla. Furthermore, the lip balm with lemon had marginally greater moisturizing effect than the lip balm with vanilla. These results suggested that olfactory cognition influences the judgment of other senses, such as touch.

Psychological studies on cosmetic behavior have increased since the 1980s. These studies have revealed that the effects of cosmetic behavior, including both "caring" cosmetics (skincare) and "embellishment" cosmetics (make-up and fragrances),on emotion are characterized by activation and relaxation. For example,a woman uses make-up to mentally "wind up" for the day and to create a "public face" before entering into social circumstances.ln the evening, following a day of hard work, she mentally "winds down" by washing off the make-up and by using skincare products to return to her in "private face". In this way, cosmetic behavior functions as an "emotion regulator" in daily life.

The present study examined the mere exposure effect of olfaction, focusing on the relationship between participants' liking for and impression of odorants. Thirty-two college students were exposed to either jasmine essence (Jasmine Group) or rose essence (Rose Group) consistently for 4 successive nights for the entirety of the sleep period. Participants' liking for and impression of both stimuli were evaluated 3 times: before the first exposure, after 2 nights of exposure and after 4 nights of exposure. A significant increase in liking was observed only in the Jasmine Group, in which participants reported low liking at the first evaluation; no effect was seen in the Rose Group, in which participants reported high liking at the first evaluation. As for the impression of the odorants, repeated exposure to rose decreased subjective intensity, and repeated exposure to both jasmine and rose decreased subjective stress. Correlation and multiple-regression analysis revealed that the decrease in subjective stress contributed significantly to the increase in liking. These findings are consistent with the conditioning hypothesis for the mere exposure effect by Zajonc (2001); however, this may be a result of the idiosyncratic properties of olfactory sensation.

We investigated how the costs and benefits of telling a lie affect a person who is lying in an attempt to avoid punishment. One hundred and sixty-eight college students were asked to read three scenarios in which the protagonist gave an excuse for arriving late to an appointment. Excuses given for arriving late were: an incredible lie (a lie invoking an unlikely event as an excuse), a credible lie (a lie invoking a plausible event as an excuse), and the truth. Participants then rated the perceived degree of benefit (forgiveness and impression) and the behavioral and emotional costs associated with each excuse, and finally chose the "best" excuse for avoiding punishment. The incredible lie was ranked highest in terms of costs and benefits, the credible lie received moderate ranking, and the truth received the lowest ranking. Participants tended to choose the credible lie, ranked moderately in terms of costs and benefits, as the "best" excuse. The results suggest that people do not act to maximize benefit but rather to avoid high cost when making an excuse to avoid punishment.

This study examined whether excuses, which vary with the possibility of occurrence, influence ratings of forgiveness, anger, credibility, and the severity of the message. One hundred and eighty-three (183) university students were asked to read three scenarios wherein an acquaintance provided reasons for arriving late for an appointment. In these scenarios, the participants were the protagonist who were waiting for their acquaintance. The participants then rated the degree of forgiveness, anger, credibility, and the severity of the message for each reason. Results suggested that the possibility of occurrence had the opposite effect on the raters' judgments regarding credibility and forgiveness, i.e., an excuse with common content resulted in high ratings of credibility, but low ratings of forgiveness, and vice versa. Furthermore, results suggest that the ratings of forgiveness for a latecomer originate from the raters' regulation of their anger.

By using structural equations, we investigated the effect of chronic stress on salivary cortisol rhythm and proposed a causal model of chronic stress by using psychosocial and physiological data. First, 111 healthy workers (48 males, 63 females) completed questionnaires on chronic stress and lifestyle habits. Then, they provided saliva samples and answered questionnaires that were prepared to assess their psychological states 5 times (on waking up and at 10:00, 11:40, 14:00, and 16:00) on workdays. Structural equation modeling (SEM) revealed that chronic stress and longer commuting time resulted in sleep irregularities and this disrupted the cortisol circadian rhythm. This suggests that chronic stress disrupts the cortisol circadian rhythm even in healthy individuals, and sleep regularity mediates the effect of chronic stress on the cortisol rhythm.

Psychophysical factors structuring the feel of skin lotion were determined from the subjective estimation of tactile sensation and whole impression. First, 300 words expressing the feel of skin lotion were collected, synonyms were reduced, and then 41 words were selected to make a questionnaire. The 41 words were deviled into 3 categories; the tactile sensations of skin lotion in application (A), the tactile sensations of skin surface after application (B), and the impressions as a whole (C). Subjects were 240 female volunteers (aged 20-49yr), who were classified into three groups according to the self-reported skin surface conditions; oily, normal, and dry. In the experiment 16 skin lotions were used, each of which had different textural properties. Subjects were assigned to each lotion according to our experimental design, and they were asked to use the lotion and to estimate their feel by an 8-point scale on each of 41 words.<br>Factor analysis was applied to each words category, and 7 factors could be identified; sticky BETATSUKI and slimy NUMERI obtained from category A, sticky BETATSUKI, softness YAWARAKA and smooth SARASARA obtained from category B, and comfortableness KAITEKIKAN and refreshed SAPPARIKAN obtained from category C. Factor analysis was applied to each of oily, normal, and dry skin group. No obvious difference could be found between these three groups concerning the psychophysical factors structuring the feel of skin lotion. Furthermore, the multiple regression analysis applied to the factor scores showed that the higher the estimation of skin softness is, the higher the scores of comfortableness are (standard partial regression coefficient: 0.44). The study showed an approach to survey the relationship between comfortableness and tactile sensation of skin lotions.

The purpose of this research is to elucidate the mediating function of emotions and to clarify the nature of human community that could support good human life based on that function. In order to achieve this goal, our study adopted an interdisciplinary approach and attempted multifaceted investigations of emotions and community, by effectively utilizing the various academic resources of research participants, including philosophy, ethics, and psychology. One of the most notable results is the examinations of the philosophical aspects of the emotional basis of community, which led us back to the Japanese philosophers such as Dogen, Nishida, Miki, Tanabe. Our project includes experimental psychological research on the communal emotions (ex. jealousy and a sense of justice), which resulted in an interdisciplinary collaboration between philosophy and psychology.

The Great East Japan Earthquake saw a reduction in the number of reported crimes in stricken areas according to our analysis of the official statistics. In contrast, the result of our questionnaire survey of residents of the impacted area showed that incidents of piggyback crime were greater in those areas where damage was greater and recovery was slower. We conclude that it is necessary to quickly implement measures for crime prevention and damage recovery in those areas that have suffered more extensive damage. Because many government functions are impaired after a large-scale disaster, crime prevention activities by residents are necessary and effective.

For "dialogue with the dead" and "dialogue with God" - concerning the concept "chance"(機) - it has become to be possible to get the standpoint of psychological and empirical dialogue-research, namely, "phenomenology of dialogue". We could take out some components, which were woven into (psychological experiments including) the excellent and practical scene invisible, especially on the basis of time character of dialogue and of its space character, that is, "chance of talking" and "verticality of dialogue". The present study could obtain the open horizons of unprecedented existential dialogue research even for so-called "communication theory" and "applied ethics".

In this research, negative formation of the communication formed of the advanced vertical and perpendicular nature of a dialog was solved by focusing on a"lie", a"smile", and focusing on analysis of"makeup". Thereby, without running to philosophical speculation too much, a sphere of the"hyper-dialog" supported to"the advanced vertical ones" of a dialog was solved by the method which is not too scientifically positive, either, and acquired the key which finds out the comprehensive ground level of a new communication theory.
