More details Close

The aluminum deoxidation equilibrium in molten Fe-10 to 40 mass%Cr-8 mass%Ni and Fe-18 mass%Cr-8 to 30 mass%Ni alloys was experimentally determined at 1 873 K and 1 773 K to obtain the thermodynamic parameters at both temperatures, corresponding to the refining and casting processes, respectively. Thermodynamic analysis on Al deoxidation was carried out based on the sub-regular solution model using a Redlich–Kister type polynomial. Fe–Al, Ni–Al, Cr–Al and Fe–Cr–Ni interaction parameters were obtained from experimental results and a thermodynamic assessment. Using these parameters, the Al deoxidation equilibrium over the complete composition range of the Fe–Ni alloy and in more than 50 mass%Fe of the Fe–Cr and Fe–Cr–Ni alloys can be calculated for the temperature ranges of both of the refining and casting processes.

Slag as by-product of Cu making has been produced in large amounts in Chile, and around 5 million tons of slag are estimated to be disposed every year and 40 to 45 million tons have been accumulated. Typical Chilean Cu slag contains about 0.3 mass% Mo which is the grade of primary mine production of molybdenite and it also contains about 40 mass% of Fe and 1 mass% Cu. Recovery of Mo from Chilean copper slag is quite attractive to secure a stable Mo supply. The feasibility of the recovery of Mo from Cu slag as Fe-Mo alloys by carbon reduction is investigated in the present work. Mo in Cu slag is found to be fully recovered as Fe rich alloy. The recovered Fe rich alloy contains about 0.65mass% Mo and 2.4 mass% Cu. In addition, to use the recovered Fe-Mo alloy in the special steel industry, which is the most important market for molybdenum, Cu in the produced Fe-Mo alloy is successfully decreased from 2.4 mass% to 0.1 mass% by using FeS-Na2S flux. Thus, Mo recovery from Chilean Cu slag can be promising.

Iron nugget making process by rapid heating reduction of powdery iron ore and pulverized coal mixture is regarded as one of the novel iron-making processes. Iron carburization during smelting reduction is especially important reaction step from the viewpoint of saving energy in this process. If the rate and efficiency of carburization reaction are increased, energy consumption of the process will be reduced to large extent. The purpose of this study is to clarify the carburization degree of iron nugget during smelting reduction of the mixture.
The sample was prepared from graphite, electrolytic iron powder and synthetic slag containing iron oxide to simulate iron carburization phenomena during smelting reduction of the mixture in the present work. The sample was quenched immediately after the mixture changed into nugget shape in a rapid heating process. Laser microscope combined with infrared image furnace was used for sample heating and observation of carburization phenomena, and carbon content in the nugget was chemically analyzed after quenching.
From above-mentioned investigations, it was revealed that the occurrence of carburization during smelting reduction in the sample mixture is advantageous to obtain higher carbon contain iron nugget.

Metallic impurities in Si will decrease solar cell efficiency to a large extent. To discuss the possibility and efficiency of impurity elimination process, evaluation of thermodynamic properties of impurities in molten silicon are crucial. In the present work, thermodynamic properties of Fe in molten Si were investigated by Knudsen effusion method. The activity coefficients of Fe in molten Si for infinitely dilute solution relative to pure liquid, and self-interaction parameters at 1723-1823 K were determined.

Acetylacetone was reacted with samples containing rare metals to form organic complexes of gases and recover the liquefied organic solvent. The spent LIB was composed of a mixture of metal oxides such as Co, Li, and Mn. This process does not require the use of different organic solvents for each of the mixtures of various oxides, but uses a single gasification organic solvent to produce an organometallic mixture containing these metals, allowing the simultaneous recovery of all the metals contained in the LIB. This method is an element separation method based on a completely new principle, and allows horizontal recycling and upcycling instead of downcycling.

This study revealed the linkages between national resource consumption (Fe, Cu, Ni) and global impacts by using a global link input-output model (GLIO) and knowledge to increase the resource efficiency in metal recycling based on metallurgical thermodynamic approach. This study also revealed the fundamental importance of metal recovery from waste to avoid dissipations of resources. Possible options include the development of a sorting process for metal scrap aimed at alloy-to-alloy recycling. We also discussed measures for ameliorating or relaxing the differences between the grades of secondary materials and grade of raw material in metallurgical industry; measures such as a) upgrading the quality of pre-consumer materials by removing impurities, b) adjusting the quality of secondary materials by mixing and diluting, and c) relaxing the limits on impurities by refineries can be considered to close the loop for metal cycle.

In this study, the dust generated during normal EAF steelmaking process was returned to the EAF by injection, and the regenerated dust was collected by using a bag filter. The amount and chemical composition of regenerated dust was continuously monitored by the particle sensor which was equiped in the dust collection system of practical EAF factory. The dust injection technology was determined to be very effective in reducing the dust treatment burden by decreasing the quantity and enhancing the quality of the regenerated dust. The regenerated dust was provided to the CaO addition process which was developed by the authors. It was confirmed that the most of zinc in the treated dust was recovered from the regenerated dust. Due to such a very good result, our partner EAF company applied the dust injection technology to their routine steelmaking operation and the total amount of dust generation was successfully reduced significantly.

The global demand for metal resources has been sharply increasing by economic growth, and the issue of sustainable resource management has also been increasingly recognized. In order to optimize the material cycles and increase resource efficiency, material flow analysis (MFA) is a powerful tool to understand the resource consumption and material cycle in the national economy. However, MFA cannot provide technological information on the recoverability and/or removability of elements from secondary resources. This study proposed a combined application of MFA with thermodynamic analysis for sustainable resource use, and conducted detailed MFAs of metals, such as nickel, chromium and molybdenum, that were concerned with thermodynamic properties of elements

Ti oxides have a lot of different crystal structures, and their structures varies depend on Ti concentration in the Fe-Ti-O system. Furthermore, they form compounds and the solid solutions with the Fe oxide. Therefore, understanding of the precipitation behavior Ti oxides that have a various crystal structure (various lattice distance) can be very important to develop the oxide metallurgy technology. Thus, as first step, and thermodynamic evaluation of the deoxidation equilibrium of various Ti oxides have been carried out. (1) The phase identification of Ti oxide of about 1μm generated in melt Fe-Ti-O alloy was carried out by using EBSD. Based on the results, the range of the oxygen concentration of molten Fe-Ti-O system in equilibrated with various Ti oxides melt Fe-Ti-O alloy was accurately determined. (2) For molten Fe-Ti-O system, the nucleation starting temperature was measured by using DTA, measurement of the nucleation generation temperature of the Ti oxide from melt Fe-Ti-O alloy was carried out, and it has been found that the nucleation gstarting temperature vary based on Ti concentration in molten Fe-Ti-O system. Moreover, to establish the correlation between the 2-dimensional precipitation behavior and actual 3-dimensional behavior, CaCO_3 precipitation behavior from the solutions was observed by using the microscope. The correlation of precipitation behavior in two dimensions and three dimensions was evaluated based on the Fractal model. Along with carrying those experiments, it was found that the small angle analysis of precipitated particles in the molten steel by synchrotron radiation is rather difficult. Therefore, the nucleation behavior of CaCO_3 from the solution was analyzed by using conventional X-ray with small angle diffraction analysis, and was confirmed that the distribution evaluation was possible for the particles with up to the diameter of about 10μm.
