    This study focuses on the overturning behavior of rigid blocks placed near walls during seismic excitation, representing furniture inside buildings. A closed-form expression for the critical overturning condition is derived based on energy balance approach under variable-amplitude impulse inputs. The model accounts for cumulative energy loss from repeated wall impacts and ground contacts, allowing evaluation of critical input characteristics across a wide frequency range. A shaking table test using set of pulse-type input with asymmetric amplitudes is conducted to validate the proposed criteria. This approach enables comprehensive assessment of overturning limits considering block geometry and environmental factors.

    This study presents a new method for estimating the seismic responses of multi-story structures equipped with a cost-effective earthquake protection system. This system comprises a graphite lubrication interface, targeting a friction coefficient of approximately 0.2, and a feasible restoring force mechanism to suppress residual displacements. It utilizes the concept of sliding systems through conventional and affordable construction materials although it acts like a fixed-based structure until exceeding the threshold level. This multi-story estimation procedure is an extension of the recently developed procedure for estimating the shear coefficient of a single-story sliding structure with a restoring force mechanism. In the new estimation procedure, a multi-story superstructure is firstly regarded as a single-story superstructure to determine the shear coefficient. Then, the shear coefficient is distributed to each story through floor distribution coefficients considering the mass ratios. The contribution of ground motion intensity is also incorporated into the new form for improving accuracy. For this examination, incremental dynamic analyses (IDAs) are performed for three and six-story free-standing structures, both with and without a restoring force capability. The results clarify the reliability of the new estimation, which matched the IDA results within the ±20% error. The improvement in accuracy achieved by incorporating ground motion intensity is also clarified. The multi-story estimation with the improvement can reasonably estimate the seismic response of sliding structures, without dynamic analysis, solely based on structural properties. This greatly benefits the design process. Furthermore, the IDA results clarified the significant benefits of multi-story sliding structures employing graphite lubrication and properly designed restoring force mechanisms in reducing structural damage and suppressing residual sliding displacements.

    A low-cost rolling base isolation system (RBIS) for rubble stone masonry buildings in the Himalayan mountain range was presented and the feasibility of RBIS in the initial conditions installed in the buildings were evaluated in experiments and simple numerical simulations. The base isolation layer is composed of styrofoam, concrete slab and cast-iron balls. The styrofoam and concrete slab are the upper and lower elements of the isolation layer. The styrofoam boards are used for the embedment of the cast-iron balls and form panels for the casting concrete of the tie beams above the isolation layer. In the case of large earthquakes, these balls roll and horizontally squeeze into the styrofoam boards. The proposed RBIS satisfies two issues for the base isolation system in rubble stone masonry buildings in the Himalayan Mountain range; i.e. (i) use of locally available materials in the isolation layer and (ii) simple construction procedure of the isolation layer by local workers. The quasi-static cyclic loading experiments were conducted. The rolling coefficients of the RBIS were 0.06–0.14. Shaking table experiments were also conducted. It was found that the recorded maximum accelerations are approximately 0.2g. The restoring force characteristics of RBIS in the shaking table experiment were created and the behavior of the experiment was simulated by the response history analyses (RHAs). The behavior of the rubble stone masonry building associated with RBIS under large earthquakes was also evaluated in RHAs. Assuming that the traditional masonry buildings can resist the earthquake ground motions with a PGA under 0.15g, the buildings installed with RBIS can resist the ground motions with a PGA under 0.5g.

    This paper studied the feasibility of a sliding base isolation layer to be used in rubble stone masonry buildings in rural areas in the Himalayan Mountain range to provide robust protection to important building like schools against strong earthquakes. In this paper, we carried out on-site investigations, quasi-static tests, and shaking table tests focusing on constructability as well as isolation performance. From the results of the feasibility study, the combination of styrofoam, concrete slab, and grease was found to be the most feasible to be used as the upper element, the lower element, and the lubricant, respectively, in the sliding isolation layer. The key features of the present sliding base isolation layer are: 1) the use of the materials that exist in rural mountain areas or those that can be easily transported from the neighboring towns and cities and 2) ease of construction and minimal change from the current construction practice. From the shaking table tests, we identified the conditions, e.g., grease amount, grease type, normal stress at the interface, and roughness of concrete slab surface, to achieve dynamic friction coefficients ranging from 0.08 to 0.16, suitable for sliding base isolation.

    This study introduces enhancements for nonlinear substructuring control (NLSC) to achieve simultaneous control of acceleration and displacement in shake table substructuring experiments with severely damaged structures. Although shake table control is greatly affected by a specimen placed on its top and its nonlinear characteristics, accurate control, even with nonlinear characteristics, is essential for experimental purposes. The NLSC was developed for a dynamically substructured system (DSS) scheme involving nonlinear substructures, and its first application to a shake table experiment was performed on a one-storey steel frame. In the experiment, NLSC realised simultaneous control of table acceleration and displacement with a slight nonlinear characteristic within the frame, although its performance degraded as the nonlinearity became stronger. To address this degradation issue, this study introduces two techniques for enhancing NLSC shake table substructuring experiments. One is a composite filtering technique to minimise noise-contaminating displacement data fed back to the table control so that the error feedback action in NLSC can be fully utilised. The other involves a new linear model that is assumed to be more highly damped than the actual system to enhance the stability robustness of NLSC against nonlinear characteristics. After a series of numerical examinations, this study experimentally examined the enhancements on actual shake table experiments using a steel frame. Using the NLSC with the enhancements, a substructuring experiment was successfully conducted; moreover, the NLSC realised simultaneous control of the table acceleration and displacement with nearly 100% accuracy, even with severe nonlinear characteristics.

    This study introduces an application of simple piece-wise linearization in time series (SPLiTS) to a physical parameter estimation of a seismically damaged structure. SPLiTS piecewisely linearises a nonlinear structure, based on half-cycle waves in the displacement response data whose central-point shift effects are minimised. In its application to experimental data of a one-storey steel structure excited by a shake table test, SPLiTS reasonably estimates its physical parameters that show damping increased and stiffness decreased in time series due to the occurrence of yielding. It clarifies the efficiency of SPLiTS to physical parameter estimations of structures damaged by earthquake excitations.

    To examine the performance of furniture in the top stories of high-rise buildings particularly under long-period ground motions, a full-scale shaking table test was conducted in E-defense. A mass-and-rubber system was designed to overcome the limitation of the shaking table. A five-story specimen with large stiffness was set on the rubber-and-mass system. It enables that different stories' responses are same and a lot of furniture experiments are carried out simultaneously.     We developed a "variable-mass rotary inertia mass damper" (hereinafter denoted as "variable-inerter damper"), in which the added inerter changes according to the response, and clarified the performance of the developed damper through dynamic loading experiments and shake table experiments. We also proposed a simulation analysis method for the developed variable inerter damper, especially a numerical analysis method for when the inerter changes, and clarified the validity of the proposed method through its consistency with the experimental results. In addition, we clarify the design method of this damper and its advantages over other dampers when introducing a variable inerter damper into the seismic isolation layer of a base-isolated structure through time history response analysis. In particular, it was shown that during long-period, long-duration earthquakes, both the displacement of the seismic isolation layer and the response acceleration can be suppressed more than other dampers.

    This study addresses the issue of shake table control degradation caused by sliding of a system placed on the table, by applying Nonlinear Signal-Based Control (NSBC) to this issue. First, we have developed numerical simulation for shake table experiments based on NSBC for sliding structures and its stability analysis. Then, we have applied NSBC to actual shake table experiments with different sliding structures such as a rigid sliding mass and a free-standing structure. The control accuracies of NSBC were evaluated in the comparison with the conventional feedforward controller based on an inversed transfer function of the controlled system. In these experiments, NSBC achieved the expected experiments even with any of the sliding systems with accurate control of the shake table acceleration. The experimental examination clarified its superiority over the conventional method.

    Buildings are required to protect human lives, reduce damage and keep functions according to the use of the building. The occurrence of the long period ground motions and pulse ground motions is predicted. The important buildings have to keep function, even if those are excited by such ground motions. In this study, researches on the semi-active control of base-isolation system and the active control by large mass damper were conducted for the purpose mentioned above. In those researches, a new verification method of the real-time hybrid simulation using shaking-table and hydraulic actuator (we call this "Dual real-time hybrid simulation") was proposed and response compensation was developed. In conclusions, a semi-active control method for non-linear base-isolation system to reduce the floor acceleration unaffected by hardening of isolators and an active control method to reduce the response displacement were proposed.

    In the first year, we established a shake-table experimental scheme based on nonlinear signal-based control (NSBC), which is the key element for real-time substructuring shake-table experiments. In an experiment of a shaking table supporting a nonlinear specimen, NSBC successfully realized near 100% control accuracy of the table, while conventional control approaches failed to do so. <BR> In the second year, based on the above research results, we conducted real-time substructuring experiments using the shake-table having the nonlinear structure. The substructuring experiments were successfully executed by nonlinear substructuring control (NLSC), which had been also developed on the basis of NSBC.

    In order to maintain and continue normal living and economic activities in our society, preparing for the future large-scale earthquake event, it is necessary to judge the performance of the infrastructures after the earthquake as a matter of course to improve the earthquake resistance before the earthquake. For this reason, many investigations have been conducted on structural health monitoring. Here, we have researched a system that estimates the structural characteristics of a building after the earthquake by capturing the response of non-structural element installed in the building with MEMS(micro-electro-mechanical systems) sensor. In this research, we have finished the basic investigation for practical use.

    A series of shaking table tests were conducted in order to develop the damage-resistant steel buildings whose column bases can slip when subjected to strong earthquake motions. First, the friction behaviors between conventional steel column and base mortar were estimated. Second, a cast-iron column was examined, and its low coefficient of friction was clarified. A column base supported by a graphite layer was also examined for a low coefficient of friction. Third, conditions of stopper to reduce the slip drift were verified. Finally, seismic performance of a prototype building was considered by the dynamic response analysis reflecting the test results, and a method to assess the seismic performance was studied for the proposed structural system.
