Abstract II–IV‐N2‐type compounds (II = Mg, Mn, Zn, etc., IV = Si, Ge, Sn, etc.) are promising semiconductor materials which are composed of earth‐abundant elements. However, given their low thermal decomposition temperatures, the synthesis of II–IV‐N2‐type nitrides necessitates high temperature and pressure or vacuum, requiring high energy consumption and complicated processes. In this study, focusing on ZnSiN2, a simple and energy‐efficient synthesis using zinc cyanamide and oxide precursor powders was developed. SiO2‐based precursors with a Zn constituent were synthesized by a liquid‐phase method using ultrasound, and wurtzite‐type ZnSiN2 and SiO2 composite was successfully synthesized by heating the precursor at 1000°C with urea under nitrogen atmosphere. Mechanistically, zinc cyanamide, a reaction intermediate, contributed to the formation of ZnSiN2 phase. Thus, a mixed powder of separately synthesized zinc cyanamide and precursors powder was heated at 900°C under nitrogen atmosphere, affording the homogeneous wurtzite‐type ZnSiN2 phase. This new process enables the facile synthesis of ZnSiN2 at low temperatures and ambient pressures from stable precursor system.

Abstract In this study, we investigated the effects of the sheet texture of the Mo underlayer on the c-axis texture of the high-rate-sputtered Nd2Fe14B phase. The magnetic properties revealed that the squareness of the Nd–Fe–B magnetic layer did not depend on the sheet texture of the Mo underlayer but on the substrate temperature: large squareness was obtained when the magnetic layer was sputtered at high substrate temperature above 500 °C. In-plane X-ray diffraction measurements indicated that the intensity of diffraction from the Nd2Fe14B (410) plane did not depend on the sheet texture of the Mo underlayer but on the substrate temperature: high intensity was obtained when the magnetic layer was sputtered at above 500 °C, which was consistent with magnetic properties. These results support that the c-axis texture of the high-rate-sputtered magnetic layer was driven by the c plane with the lowest surface energy among the crystal planes in the Nd2Fe14B phase.

Silver Nanowires, Silver Carboxylates, Transparent Conductive Films, Low-Dimension MaterialsAbstract: Silver nanowires transparent conductive films are expected as a material to replace indium tin oxidefilms. Silver nanowires are mainly synthesized by the polyol method, which used protective agents to achievean anisotropic crystal growth. However, protective agents decrease conductivity of the films because theycover the surface of nanowires. In this study, we have conveniently synthesized needle-shaped silvercarboxylates by ultrasound irradiation, and then obtained silver nanowires transparent conductive films byspray coating them on substrates and exposing them to gas-phase hydrazine.
Silver carboxylates were synthesized by ultrasound irradiation to mixture that contains silver(I) oxide, aceticacid, propionic acid, and ethanol. These carboxylates were put onto a glass substrate, and then reduced byexposure to hydrazine gas (vaporized hydrazine monohydrate). The obtained samples were characterized byFE-SEM, XRD, TG-DTA, four-probe method, and UV-Vis.
Silver oxide completely reacted and silver carboxylates were produced after 1 h of ultrasound irradiation(22.32-44.13 kHz, 100 W). Raw materials were most homogeneity dispersed and consumed at 44.13 kHz. Thestudy on coating conditions of the precursor, in case of short height of the spray, produced transparentconductive films showed low transmittance and very low resistance. And high transmittance and lowresistance were achieved by adjusting the coating time and spray height.

Copper nanoparticles(CuNPs) are expected to be novel wiring materials because of low sintering temperature and low-priced ingredients. CuNPs are usable as a ink for wiring. This ink printed on a circuit board conducts electricity after proper heat treatment. However, CuNPs oxidize easily in the air. To prevent oxidation of CuNPs, additional costly process are needed such as atmosphere exchanging into an inert atmosphere. On the other hand, organic compounds have been used as protectors for CuNPs, but these non-metallic coverings often reduce conductivity of CuNPs. Hence, Cu-Ag nanocomposites(Cu-Ag NC) have been considered as an alternative method to prevent oxidation. In this study, Cu-Ag NC were easily synthesized under high concentration condition by using ultrasonic irradiation. Ultrasonic irradiation was easily process to combine metal nanoparticles with other materials. However, CuNPs and silver nanoparticles repel each other in a solvent because of positively charged particles. To change charge of CuNPs, oxidization of CuNPs is available. CuNPs were purposely oxidized, then synthesis of Cu-Ag NC became easily. Cu-Ag NC were reduced on a glass substlate, and electric resistivity of the sample were decreased from 2.267 Ωcm to 1.690 × 10^<-4> Ωcm.

Hard chromium plating has been used to improve hardness, resistance to corrosion, friction and heat in various fields. However, alternative technology of hard chromium plating is desired because of toxicity of raw materials. Thus, we developed a novel method to fabricate a hard film by using Cr nanoparticles. Although this method is easy and environmentally friendly, Cr nanoparticles are expensive at present because Cr nanoparticles are synthesized by vapor deposition. In this study, we tried to synthesize Cr nanoparticles in solvent by ultrasonic decomposition of Cr(CO)_6. Cr(CO)_6 was fully decomposed by ultrasonic irradiation in decanol at 50 ℃ for 30 min. The product had a low crystallinity and particles sizes were about 5 nm. In TG-DTA, products exhibited weight loss (33 %) around 1000 ℃ in Ar by decomposition of organics. In XRD, Cr and Cr_2O_3 were observed after heating at 1000 ℃ in Ar. It is considered that surfaces of Cr nanoparticles were formed oxide shells of Cr_2O_3 as passive layers. When the atmosphere was changed from Ar to air in 1000 ℃, products exhibited weight gain due to oxidation of Cr.

Recently, graphene has attracted tremendous research interests due to its unique mechanical, electrical and thermal properties caused by a two-dimensional, single-atom-thick structure of sp2-bonded carbon atoms. In the past few years, several methods, such as chemical vapor deposition and exfoliation of graphite powder in high boiling point solvents, have been used to prepare graphene sheets. It is known that chemical reactions, stirring, dispersion and exfoliation are promoted by ultrasound-cavitation. In this study, the production of unfunctionalized and nonoxidized graphene by exfoliation of graphite flakes in solvents is synthesized and characterized. We used 2-propanol (IPA) and acetic acid as low boiling point solvents. A stable homogeneous dispersion of graphene was obtained by solid-liquid sonochemical reactions using IPA and acetic acid mixed solvents. STEM images and electron diffraction pattern shows the presence of mono- and few-layer graphenes. As a result, graphene could be synthesized in low boiling point solvent. The solvent, IPA, was simply and quickly removed by air-drying, and dose not leave any residue of the solvent in the graphene sheets.

The obtained samples were characterized by FE-SEM, XRD, TG-DTA, four-point probe and UV-Vis. Silver oxide was completely reacted and silver carboxylates were produced after 1 h of ultrasound irradiation at 10-40 ℃, that is relatively low temperature compared to conventional method. Decreasing reaction temperature, it was confirmed that diameters of the precursor were reduced by 25%. Diameter and aspect ratio of the precursor were decreased for longer reaction time because of sonofragmentation. To reduce diameter with keeping aspect ratio, lower temperature can be effective. Transparent conductive films, which were produced by spraying and reducing precursor, show high transmittance and low resistance at 80 ℃ of reduction temperature. However resistivity have been drastically increased for higher temperature because their specific one-dimensional shapes have been completely lost.

Printed electronics is one of the inexpensive fabrication for electronic circuits and it is expected to be an alternative to conventional method such as photolithography. Commercial conductive ink for printed electronics often uses Ag nanoparticles(AgNPs), but AgNPs are expensive. Accordingly, Cu nanoparticles(CuNPs) are expected to replace for AgNPs, because Copper is much cheaper than silver and has high conductivity. However, Copper oxidises easily in the atmosphere. To prevent oxidation of Cu, organic compounds have been used as coverings for CuNPs, but these non-metallic coverings often reduce conductivity of CuNPs. Hence, Cu-Ag nanocomposites(Cu-Ag NC) have been considered as an alternative method to prevent Cu oxidation. In this study, Cu-Ag NC were easily synthesized under high concentration condition with microwaves and ultrasonication. Microwave heating is effective method for synthesis of nanoparticles because of its effect to heat polar solvents quickly and uniformly. Ultrasonication is easily process to synthesize composites of nanoparticles and other materials. The sample synthesized showed the form that AgNPs attached to the surface of CuNPs in its SEM images. Thermogravimetry measurement suggested that the sample has high oxidation resistance against CuNPs.

The obtained samples were characterized by FE-SEM, XRD, TG-DTA, and UV-Vis. Long needle-shaped silver carboxylates were observed after ultrasound irradiation. In contrast to stirrer, we obtained well-dispersed silver carboxylates by ultrasound irradiation. In addition, it was confirmed that the reaction rate is greater than that of stirrer. These results are due to effects of ultrasound, such as strong dispersive power, erosion, and high temperature-pressure reaction field. Silver nanowire TCF were prepared by reducing silver carboxylates. This film indicated low resistivity and high transparency.

Ecology and Economy synthesis is important in the future. There are some elements to achieve this synthesis. One is a production device. A cheap device is hoped for in not an expensive, special device but the general purpose. The second is a raw material. When synthesizing, neither waste nor the air pollutant are not generated, and it is safe and nontoxic raw material is preferable. The third is a synthetic temperature. Low temperature synthesis as much as possible is suitable from the viewpoint of energy conservation. Sustainable processing for Platinum nanoparticles were developed by novel ultrasonic and microwave liquid-solid reaction. We used Platinum oxide as metallic source and water based solvent in this system. This system can be synthesized 2-3nm Platinum nanoparticle in short time and non-waste, so low-pricing of Platinum nanoparticle is realizable. By using water-ethanol mixed solvent, it can obtain dispersant-free Platinum nanoparticles suitable for catalyst, etc. In this study, fabricated conditions were examined in detail, reaction mechanisms and morphology of products were investigated.

Recently, graphene has attracted tremendous research interest due to its unique mechanical, electrical and thermal properties caused by a two-dimensional, single-atom-thick structure of sp^2-bonded carbon atoms. In the past few years, several methods, such as chemical vapor deposition and chemical reduction of graphene oxide, have been used to prepare graphene sheets. It is known that chemical reactions, stirring, dispersion and exfoliation are promoted by ultrasound-cavitation. In this work, Graphite Oxide (GO) and Ag/graphene nanocomposites were synthesized by solid-liquid sonochemical reactions easily and briefly. GO was synthesized by means of Hummers method using sonication or stirring. From XRD patterns and FT-IR spectra, the oxidation of graphite was promoted by chemical and physical effects of ultrasound. Ag/graphene nanocomposites were synthesized from GO and silver oxide by sonication. UV-vis spectra showed the peaks of graphene oxide and Ag nanoparticle plasmon resonance absorption. EDX images and electron diffraction patterns confirmed Ag nanoparticles were decorated on graphenesheets by ultrasound. Using sonication, GO and Ag/graphene nanocomposites could be synthesized easily in short time.

Tin atoms were inserted into the skutterudite-type CoSb_3 host lattice under high pressure and temperature conditions. It was found that Sn atoms could be inserted into the body-centered vacant site, resulting in the formation of new filled (or partially filled) skutterudites, Sn_xCo_4Sb_<12>. The degree of insertion (x) increases with increasing applied pressure, and the vacant sites of the CoSb_3 host lattice is fully occupied by Sn atoms when the reaction is carried out at 8 GPa and at 550℃. X-ray Rietveld refinement revealed that the inserted Sn atom showed an anomalously large isotropic atomic displacement parameter, indicating a large thermal vibration amplitude at the body-centered position. The Sn-filled skutterudites exhibit n-type semiconducting behaviour indicating that Sn filling causes the formation of a donor level.

The perovskite-type solid solutions Sr_2(Sr_<1-x>M_x)TaO_z(M=Ca, Nd) were synthesized. Lattice distortion and cation ordering in the octahedral site of the perovskite type structure were investigated using Rietveld analysis of powder X-ray diffraction data. Cubic perovskite-type phases with cation ordering in octahedral site were obtained for Sr_2(Sr_<1-x>Ca_x)TaO_<5.5> (x=0-1), and Sr_2(Sr_<0.9>Nd_<0.1>)TaO_<5.55>. Two types of monoclinic perovskite-type phases were obtained for Sr_2(Sr_<1-x>Nd_x)TaO_z. The unit cell of the solid solutions for x=0.3-0.7 was close to a tetragonal cell. The distortion of the solid solutions was due to tilting octahedra and a difference in the direction of tilt was observed between the compounds for x=0.3-0.7 and x=0.9-1.0. Degree of monoclinic distortion increased with increasing Nd^<3+> content. Cation ordering in the octahedral sites was observed in all the compositions investigated for Sr_2(Sr_<1-x>Nd_x)TaO_z. Increase of Nd^<3+> content possibly causes increase of oxygen content z. The present results suggest that increase of oxygen content is one of the reasons to cause the lattice distortion for Sr_2(Sr_<1-x>M_x)TaO_z(M=Ca, Nd).

We aimed to establish the theory of microwave-accelerated solid-solid and solid-gas reactions. We established a methodology to observe the local thermal non-equilibrium on the surface or in the bulk of solids under microwaves. We succeeded in developing in situ measurement instruments for direct observation of local temperature and structure of materials during microwave irradiation using XAFS, Raman, light emission spectroscopy coupled with a high resolution thermography. We demonstrated that the formation of a local high-temperature is the key mechanism that microwaves accelerate chemical reactions. Furthermore, we clearly showed that this method could be used to control solid catalytic reactions and synthesis of new solid materials.

Intermetallic compounds in transition metal - metalloid systems, that can be expected to exhibit various electrical and magnetic properties, have much attractive attention from the viewpoint of surveying magnetic semiconductors. In this study, novel inter metallic compounds in which magnetic metal chains are inserted in the covalent metalloid skeletons were synthesized under high-pressure / temperature reaction field. We have succeeded in synthesizing a novel ferromagnetic defect disilicide-type intermetallic compound Crn(Ge, Si)m and found that its Curie temperature has a strong correlation with m/n. In addition, we successfully synthesized a new ferrimagnetic intermetallic compound, Mn(Al, Ge)5, and confirmed it shows a spin glass like behavior at low temperature.

Microwave heating is rapidly becoming an established procedure for inorganic synthesis. In this study, various inorganic materials with nano- or meso-scopic structure were successfully synthesized by microwave irradiation and the nature of the "non-equilibrium reaction field" was systematically analyzed in a view point of "microwave selective heating". Rutile-type solid solution, TiO_2-SnO_2, was successfully synthesized within 900 s of microwave irradiation. In the diffraction pattern of the specimen treated at 1100℃, splitting due to spinodal decomposition was observed for (hkl: 1≠0) diffraction peaks. The occurrence of spinodal decomposition was also confirmed by TEM observation. Lamellar structure with the modulation cycle of 10-30nm was observed. In the binary TiO_2-SnO_2 system, lower limit of the solid solution range is at 1350℃ (Ti/Sn=1/1) from the equilibrium phase diagram. In this study, however, formation of solid solution was completed at 1100℃, which was lower than that expected by the phase diagram. The experimental results suggest the following mechanism of the formation of the mesoscopic structure. When microwaves are irradiated on the powder mixture of TiO_2 and SnO_2, SnO_2 particles are selectively heated to higher temperature and react with TiO_2 particles to form Ti_<1-x>Sn_xO_2 solid solutions. Anisothermal condition is maintained in a certain period and the temperature fluctuation within a microscopic scale induces spinodal decomposition, consequently, the formation of mesoscopic lamellar structure. Similar type of meso-scopic structure was also synthesized in binary Fe_3O_4-FeAl_2O_4 system. It is concluded that microwave selective heating plays a key role on fabricating non-equilibrium structures like nano-, meso-scopic modulated composites and thin film devices.

Various amorphous ferrites were synthesized by microwave irradiation on the powder mixture of component oxides using 28 GHz frequency. Microwave absorbing behavior of component oxides was analyzed by measuring the temperature-time profiles under microwave irradiation. Strong microwave absorption was observed in powder mixture of oxides with spinel-and magnetoplumbite-type compositions. After irradiation of high power microwaves, the specimens turned to amorphous phases showing ferromagnetism. These amorphous phases did not crystallize by high-temperature annealing at 1200℃, but easily crystallized by applying shear stress. It was found that the tendency of amorphisation strongly correlate with the magnetostriction constant of the crystalline ferrites. The obtained amorphous ferrites shows ferromagnetic behavior similar to those of crystalline phases with the same compositions, i.e., the Curie temperature and saturation magnetization are nearly the same for both amorphous and crystalline phases, but the coercive force (Hc) of the amorphous phase is much smaller than that of crystalline phase. In the case of ZnFe_2O_4, the amorphous phase shows ferromagnetism although the crystalline ZnFe_2O_4 (normal spinel-type) is antiferromagnetic. The possible presence of tetrahedral Fe^<3+> ion confirmed by XPS spectra. The mechanism of amorphisation is discussed in terms of material-microwave interactions, especially, structure fluctuation induced by coupling with microwave energy.

The purpose of this project is to examine the material design of novel phosphors for VFD (Vacuum Fluorescence Display) with high fluorescence intensity from a viewpoint of structural low-dimensionality such as magnetoplumbite structure etc. Generally, a luminous phosphor for VFD should be requested to keep some electric conductivity owing to the prevention of some space charges. In this context, we also investigated the fabrication of novel pyrochlore type oxides which consisted of rare earth metals as luminous centers and host lattice with Ti^<4+> and Sn^<4+> ions being semiconductive. As a result, we succeeded to make novel phosphors in the solid solution of Eu^<3+> and Pr^<3+> pyrochlores for VFD. The resulting compounds were identified as single phase of pyrochlore and observed the intense emission by a cathodeluminescence technique after adjusting the suitable concentration of luminous center ions. On the other hand, CaAl_2B_2O_7;Eu^<2+> phosphor was newly synthesized as PDP's (Plasma Display Panel's) use. According to the XRD data, the structure was precisely determined to a layered spinel structure with BO_3 and AlO_4 blocks which were more available for the 147nm-excitation(i.e., Xe gas excitation).

First, we have prepared new tin double oxides with open framework. C.Keller and A.R.West had reported Li_2MgSn_3O_8 with a ramsdellite structure. (J.Mater. Sci. Lett., 2 (1983) 451-452) The framework of Li_2MgSn_3O_8 is constructed by SnO_6 and MgO_6 Li^+ ions are located in 1×2 tunnel. We have tried to synthesize new tin double oxides with larger tunnels, for example 2×2 or 3×3, by using lager alkali ions, K^+, Rb^+, or Cs^+ instead of Li^+ ion. As a restult, we succeeded in preparing A_xMg_<x/2>Sn_<8-x/2>O_<16> (x≦2)(K, Rb and Cs) and K_xCa_<x/2>Sn_<8-x/2>O_<16> (x≦2) with a hollandite structure. Both A_xMg_<x/2>Sn_<8-x/2>O_<16> (x≦2)(K, Rb and Cs) and K_xCa_<x/2>Sn_<8-x/2>O_<16> (x≦2) were expected that they would have excellent ion and electron conductivities. In order to investigate electrical properties of both compounds, we have studied the flux growth of their crystals. Polycrystalline K_xCa_<x/2>Sn_<8-x/2>O_<16> (x≦2) was obtained by using excess K_2CO_3 as flux. The polycrystal was made by tying fibrous single crystals of K_xCa_<x/2>Sn_<8-x/2>O_<16> (x≦2) in a bundle. Its size (mm_3) was 1.5 mm×0.2 mm×0.2 mm. After conductivity measurement, the conductivity of K_xCa_<x/2>Sn_<8-x/2>O_<16> (x≦2) was σ_<300>=2.2×10^<-9>Ω^<-1> m^<-1> at room temperature, and the activation energy was calculated to be 0.63eV.The result suggested that the chief charge carrier is potassium ion in 1D channels. In conclusion, it is expected that both new hollandite tin double oxides, A_xMg_<x/2>Sn_<8-x/2>O_<16> (K, Rb, and Cs) and K_xCa_<x/2>Sn_<8-x/2>O_<16> (x≦2) will be applied to electrolytes, especially to

High luminous ceramic materials of EuィイD13+ィエD1,TbィイD13+ィエD1 and TmィイD13+ィエD1-doped polytantalate of LaTaィイD27ィエD2OィイD219ィエD2, gallates and aluminates of SrLaGaィイD23ィエD2OィイD27ィエD2 and CaLaAlィイD23ィエD2OィイD27ィエD2 with layered structures have been developed. It was found that these ceramic materials had high critical concentrations under UV exitation. The energy migration between EuィイD13+ィエD1,TbィイD13+ィエD1 and TmィイD13+ィエD1 ions in these ceramic materials was strongly affected by the crystal structure. We propose the material design of thigh luminous ceramic materials from the view points of the distance between luminescent ions in plane and between layers in the crystal structure.

This research put emphasis on the synthesis of novel transition metal compounds under high pressure and temperature condition. Various 3d transition metal - metalloid compounds were newly synthesized in this study. These include transition metal diantimonides, digermanides, and triantimonides. The crystal chemistry of these intermetallic compounds was systematically discussed in terms of chemical bonding scheme and the pressure-induced phase transition. 1. Two types of pressure-induced phase transitions, marcasite- to pararammelsbergite-type and marcasite- to CuAlィイD22ィエD2-type, were found in transition metal diantimonide family. The former occurs in NiSbィイD22ィエD2 and can be explained by effective packing of NiSbィイD26ィエD2 octahedra. The latter was found in CrSbィイD22ィエD2 and the transition accompanied a change in bonding character form mixed ionic and covalent to metallic. High-pressure form of CrSbィイD22ィエD2 showed an itinirant electron ferromagnetic behavior with the Curie temperature of 160 K. 2. Various Group 14 elements could be inserted into the body-centered vacant site of the CoSbィイD23ィエD2 skutterudite host lattice, resulting in the formation of new filled-skutterudite. The incorporated atom showed large thermal vibration amplitude, indicating a possible reduction of thermal conductivity of materials. It was concluded that the atom insertion into the skutterudite host lattice is effective in developing new thermoelectric conversion materials.

The objective of this research was to develop a repid and continuous production process for phosphor (YAG : Tb) fine particles by supercritical water crystallization method. The relationship between properties (crystal sturacture, particle size and particle size distribution) of particles produced and reaction conditions (reaction temperature, pressure, reaction time, composition of solution and alkali mole ration of solution) was investigated experimentally. Al (NO_3) _3, Y (NO_3) _3 and TbCl_3 mixed aqueous solution was used as the starting materials. Potassium aqueous solution was used to vary the alkali mole retio of solution. Experiments were performed with a newly-deveolped flow type apparatus. From these results, the alkali mole ratio was important factor for production of single phase YAG particles. Reaction temperature and pressure affected crystalline size and lattice constant of particles. High temperature and low pressure leaded to produce particles with high crystallinity. Emission properties of particles produced was studied by comparison with particles produced by a conventional solid state reaction method. Properties of particles produced by the method in this work were comparable with the conventional method. Continuous (1.5g/h) and rapid (<1 sec.) production of phosphor (YAG : Tb) fine particles was found to be practical with the supercritical water crystallization method.

Transformation toughening is one effective approach to improving the fracture toughness and fracture strength of brittle ceramics. Transformation toughening requires the stress-induced martensitic transformation of particles, as is well known in tetragonal zirconia ceramics. The main purpose of our study is to find new oxide ceramics with stress-induced phase transformation. In the present study, the relationship between orthorhombic and monoclinic phase, the possible factors for metastabilization of orthorthombic phase at room temperature and thermal and mechanical properties in (R_<1-x>La_x)_4Al_2O_9 and Gd_4Al_2O_9/MgO composites are examined. Single phase solid solutions with orthorhombic structure were synthesized by reaction sintering at 1700゚C for 30h in air within the composition range of 0*x<0.5 for (Ho_<1-x>La_x)_4Al_2O_9 and 0*x<0.3 for (Gd_<1-x>La_x)_4Al_2O_9 system. Above these composition ranges, perovskite-type LaAlO_3 coexisted as second phase. Metastable orthorhombic phase was capable of quenching to room temperature under the conditions of grain growth above the critical particle size of 6.2mum for x=0, and 3.3mum for x=0.2 in (Ho_<1-x>La_x)_4Al_2O_9 and 2.7mum for x=0 and 2.4mum for x=0.2 in (Gd_<1-x>La_x)_4Al_2O_9. After polishing the surface of all sintered bodies with orthorhombic phase at room temperature, the crystal structure of samples changed to a monoclinic structure ; i.e.a stress-induced phase transformation occurred during the polishing process. This stress-induced phase transformation from orthorthombic to monoclinic structure was accompained by an increase of volume of about 0.5%. From the results of DSC measurements, the thermal phase transformation of Gd_4Al_2O_9 is reversible and has hysteresis. The transition temperature, defined as the average temprarure of exothermic and endothermic peaks, was 1110゚C,which correspond to the phase transformation from low temperature monoclinic to high temperature monoclinic structure. On the other hand, a second transition temperature was observed at 1430゚C on heating and at 1420゚C on cooling, which would correspond to the phase transformation from monoclinic to orthorhombic structure.

beta-Fe_<1-x>Ru_xSi_2 solid solution was synthesized by solid state reaction at 1100゚C for 48h and subsequect annealing at 850゚C for 168h in an evacuated silica tube. Single phase solid solution was obtained in the composition range 0*x*0.1. The thermal stability range of the beta-phase extended to higher temperature region by partial substitution of Ru atom. The thermoelectric properties of Cr or Co-doped B-Fe_<1x>Ru_xSi_2 strongly depend on the sinthering conditions. The samples with optimum thermoelectric properties are obtaind by high-pressure sintering at 3 GPa and 800゚C for 1h. Seebeck coefficient for X-axis perpendicular to applied pressure was superior to that for Z-axis parallel to applied pressure. The anisotropy of electrical conductivity was opposite tendency comparing with the results of Seebeck coefficient. The optimum compositions are found to be Fe_<0.92>Ru_<0.05>Cr_<0.03>Si_2 and Fe_<0.92>Ru_<0.05>Co_<0.03>Si_2 for p-type and n-type materials, respectively. The power factors (sigmaalpha_2) of these materials are higher than that of beta-FeSi_2 based materials. The mechanism for the anisotropy of thermoelectric properties was examined. As a result, it is considered that the model of oriented-grain microstructure is most possible factor to introduce the anisotropy of thermoelectric properties. In this model, a very few amounts of impurities (FeSi, amorphous Si etc.) were located at grain boundaries. Both oriented-grains and impurities in microstructure play an important role to introduce the anisotropy of thermoelectric properties.

Intercalation reaction has been extensively studied with a number of different approaches, experimentally as well as theoretically. Among inorganic materials, swelling clays were fairly profitable for understanding the interface characteristics between organic and inorganic materials, since the swelling clay as host allowed to confine various kinds of organic molecules as guest in its gallery. Numerical studies have been therefore focused on a well-orientated sequence of the functional organic molecules in the interlayrs of clay. On the other hand, the recent interests in Langmuir-Brodgett (LB) mono-and multilayr assemblies have originated from their potential use as ultrathin organic films with special and purposefully designed properties in microlithography, electro-optics, biochemical sensing, and tribology. For all these and other applications the careful control of the molecular structure and the microscopic order of the thin films-both lateral and traversal-are required. In this paper we report on a new approach to fabricate the clay unit layrs/organic molecules multilayrs films using a conventional LB technique. It will be demonstrated that there is no other homogenized preparation techniques to from inorganic and organic composites in the nano-scale with a wide variety of possibilities for influencing ordered states and thus adjusting their properties. This is due to the fact that the organic ions or molecules are initially organized on a clay surface where the environmental parameters can be readily changed and in a wide range, comparing with the intercalation reaction. The surface pressure-area, pi-A isotherms were measured at 16゚C for the fabrication of the monolayrs of nanodeylamine on distillled water and aqueous solutions contained various quantities of hectorite clay (referred to as HT-C_<19>). By using the horizontal lifting method on the hydrophillic surface of glass substrate, the deposition of a suitable monolayr was observed. The extrapolated surface area per molecule was estimated to be 21-22A_2. Nine times this value (189A^2) was almost equivalent to 7 times the hexagonal block area, involving 6-member rings of SiO_4 tetrahedrons on the silica sheet (189.7 A^2). By assuming that a functional headgroup of nanodecylamine was ionized as +1, it was plausible that 9 molecules was sufficiently covered with the 7 mean-charges of clay sheets for keeping the electroneutrality. At lower quantity of clays, the monolayr of composites never be statified. This implied that the built-up of monolayrs was apparently conducted by the electrostatic interaction between cationic amine and anionic clay. In contrast, at larger quantity of clay, the condensation of LB film was observed on the water subphase as the deposition progressed. The observation implied that the collapse of monolayr or the crystallization of nanodecylamine itself occurred. According to the powder X-ray diffraction patterns of multilayr NaHT-C_<19> composites, the well-stratification of LB film was performed under a surface pressure of 20 to 35 dyn/cm at pH=5.80. The basal spacing of LB films was estimated to be 61-62 A,which corresponded to the bilayrs of alkylamines (Y-type). According to the chemical analysis and the consumed area of LB trough, the accumulative proportion in multilayred LB films was estimated. The accumulative proportion is scarcely changed between swelling clays, but steeply shifted from theoretical one with increasing the pH. The FTIR-RAS spectra of 15 layred hectorite-nanodecylamine films and nanodecylamine LB multilayred film demonstrated that the nu (CH_2) bands at 2917 and 2850 cm^<-1> are enhanced in intensity and width. These changes indicate conformational disordering of the-CH_2-chains with an accompanying transition dipole component perpendicular to the clay surface. A relative intensity changes of the delta (CH_2) band at 1467 cm^<-1> probably arises from the same origin. The temperature dependence of d_< (002) > peak intensity for montmorillonite-nanodecylamine indicated that Na^+-hectorite nanodecylamine and nanodecylamine LB films. On heating above 48゚C of melting temperature, nanodecylalkylamine LB film collapses. However, the geometrical arrangement of alkylamine molecules is changed stepwise in the composite LB film having the basal spacings of 61.5 A to 38.6 A,as being of an intercalated clay compound. Our results are explained by models which links particular chain orientations on the clay surface to the surface binding geometry of the terminal amine group and the lateral interlocking geometry of the zigzag hydrocarbon skeleton.

Fluorescent Oxides doped with rare earths such as Tm^<3+>, Tb^<3+> and Eu^<3+> have attracted much attention because of their blue, green and red luminescence. However, an enriched quantity of rare earths frequently leads to a quenching phenomenon in luminescence owing to the energy transfer between rare earth ions i. e. concentration quenching. It is important to elucidate the quenching mechanism in oxides in order to realize intense fluorescence. In the present study, the luminescence properties of Tm^<3+>, Tb^<3+> and Eu^<3+> in (La_<1-X>R_X) Ta_7O_<19> (R=Tm, Tb, Eu) solid solutions were examined systematically. X-ray diffraction patterns of the solid solutions indicated wat the crystal structure consisted of a network of (La^<3+>_<1-X>R^<3+>_X, Ta^<5+>)-O^<2-> polyhedra interstratified with a double layr of Ta^<5+> -O^<2-> polyhedra. According to the emission spectra, the most intense emissions were found near 460nm and X=0.14 in (La_<1-X>Tb_X) Ta_7 O_<19>, near 547nm and X=0.8 IN (La_<1-X> Tb_X) Ta_7O_<19>, near 610nm and X=1.0 in (La_<1-X>Eu_X)Ta_7O_<19>. As a results, a low dimensional arrangement of Tm^<3+>, Tb^<3+> or Eu^<3+> was much more preferable for getting intense emission, because it reduced the energy migration between rare earth ions in (La_<1-X>R_X) Ta_7O_<19> solid solutions.

Y_2O_3-stabilized cubic zirconia ceramics is considered to be good candidate materials as an solid oxygen fuel cells (SOFC). However, the fracture strength and toughness of cubic zirconia are not enough high to apply to an electrolyte of planer-type SOFC.In the present study, fundamental research on fabrication of high strength and high ionic conductive cubic zirconia were investigated in ceramics/ceramics composites of tetragonal zirconia/cubic zirconia and alumina/cubic zirconia and Y_2O_3-Sc_2O_3 doped cubic zirconia systems In the system of tetragonal zirconia grains dispersed cubic zirconia composites of 5mol.%Y_2O_3 doped ZrO_2 fabricated at 1500。C in air for 12hr, the fracture strength and ionic conductivity (at 900。C) of composites were 525MPa and 0.05Scm^<-1>. The fracture strength and ionic conductivity (at 900。C) of 20vol.%Al_2O_3 grains dispersed cubic zirconia fabricated by post-HIPing were 355MPa and 0.06Scm^<-1>. On the other hands, fracture strength and ionic conductivity of 2mol%Y_2O_3-6mol%Sc_2O_3 doped cubic zirconia were 214MPa and 0.141Scm^<-1>. These present results indicated that high ionic conductive cubic zirconia with high fracture strength were excellent ceramics as an electrolyte of planer-type SOFC.

ESCAスペクトルから、Si(or Ge)_3N_4やZn_3N_2に比べてZnSi(or Ge)N_2では、Si(2p)、Ge(3d)やN(1s)のスペクトルが、いずれも低エネルギ-側にシフトし、Zn(2p_<3/2>)のスペクトルが高エネルギ-側にシフトすることが明らかになった。
