We present scanning optical stroboscopic confocal microscopy and spectroscopy measurements wherein three degrees of freedom, namely energy, real-space, and real-time, are resolvable. The edge-state propagation is detected as a temporal change in the optical response in the downstream edge. We succeeded in visualizing the excited states of the most fundamental fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state and the collective excitations near the edge. The results verify the current understanding of the edge excitation and also point toward further dynamics outside the edge channel.

The ground-state and low-energy excitations of quantum Hall systems are studied by the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. From the ground-state pair correlation functions and low-energy excitions, the ground-state phase diagram is determined, which consists of incompressible liquid states, Fermi liquid type compressible liquid states, and many kinds of CDW states called stripe, bubble and Wigner crystal. The spin transition and the domain formation are studied at ν=2/3. The evolution from composite fermion liquid state to an excitonic state in bilayer systems is investigated at total filling factor ν=1.

We review recently developed numerical algorithm for finite-temperature density-matrix renormalization groups (DMRG). Physical quantities of one-dimensional quantum systems are efficiently calculated by this method. Mathematically, an extreme eigenvalue and its eigenvector can be obtained for non-Hermitian matrices of mammoth size (typically up to 2^<100>) , by reducing to a tractable size: generalization of the original DMRG algorithm proposed for Hermitian matrices. Special focus is on the tensorproduct structure of the vector space and the matrices, which reflects the physics of the original problem, and how and why this method works efficiently is briefly discussed.

We investigated quantum properties of the quantum many-body system on Dirac materials using analytic and nunmerical methods. An important relativistic effect in the quantum many-body system was unveiled in the present study. The relativistic effect acts to the quantum many-body physics in magnetic field as the `parity quantum anomaly’and we pointed out that the parity anomaly brings instability to the Laughlin's many-body ground state. I also investigated the `relativistic’ non-commutative geometry in the context of the Dirac materials imposed on a magnetic field. In this process, a pure quantum geometry that does not have its classical counterpart was newly discovered. I also applied the obtained results to general constructions of the squeezed states in quantum optics and topological solitons in higher dimensions.

Various quantum many body states of interacting systems have been studied by the density matrix renormalization group method. Wigner crystal formation and the physical effects of the mass term to the relativistic quantum Hall states have been clarified. The ground state phase diagrams of the twisted three-leg spin tube, J1-J2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice and the checkerboard lattice have also been determined in magnetic fields with many new quantum states.

Heavy electron phenomena emerge in rare-earth and actinide compounds, when f electron exhibits huge effective mass which is a few hundred or thousand times as large as the bare electron mass. Thus far, the heavy electron state has been understood by the competition between itinerant and localized nature of f electron. In this research, we have clarified new heavy-electron mechanisms due to multi degrees of freedom such as f-electron orbital and phonon in addition to spin and charge. We have also developed the theory of ordering of multipole as spin-orbital complex, quantum criticality due to valence fluctuations, superconductivity due to anharmonic phonons, and orbital-fluctuation-induced superconductivity in orbital degenerate systems.

The object of this study is to clarify how the ground state, excitation spectrum, funneling current develop as interlayer distance, tunneling strength, spin-Zeeman splitting are changed. The methods of study are analytical method, exact diagonalization, and density matrix renormalization (DMRG) method. The development of program of DMRG for the case of bilayer systems is also one of the object of this study. For these objectives we obtained the following results. 1.Bilayer systems in which total filling is an integer with different Landau quantum numbers for each layer. : In this case the system is described by an Ising like model, when the layer index is expressed by pseudospin. It is clarified that at certain separation two types of density wave states are realized distinguished by relative phase of the density wave. 2.Bilayer system at filling one-half. In this case the ground state has various possibilities that include 331 state by Halperin, Pfaffian state, stripe state and Fermi liquid state of composite fermions, depending on the layer separation, thickness of each layer, and tunneling strength. We clarified that for certain separation and thickness corresponding to an experiment, the ground state evolves continuously as tunneling strength is varied, but the lowest excitation change discontinuously from ordinary quasiparticle state to that with non-abelian statistics. This transition explains the strange behavior observed experimentally. 3.Development of DMRG program for bilayer systems : It is not obvious to apply DMRG method to two dimensional systems. We extended our successful DMRG program for singly layer system to bilayer systems. Research of bilayer systems using this program is presently underway. 4.Behavior at large enough separation. We clarified conditions for realization of stripe states. The meaning of "charge" observed by shot noise experiments is clarified.

The first aim of the research was to obtain an comprehensive understanding as to why states at the same even-denominator filling factor have different ground states at various Landau levels. For this aim we performed investigations using the Hartree-Fock meanfield theory and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study, which gives the most include Fermi liquid state, pairing state, and stripe state. Furthermore we clarified how the ground state evolves as we change the filling factor in the third and fourth lowest Landau levels. The second aim of the research was to obtain an understanding of the orientation of the stripe phase. For this aim we performed Hartree-Fock calculation in the presence of an external periodic potential. We clarified that when the external periodic potential that is originated from the surface morphology has period that is longer than that of the stripe state, the stripes orient themselves perpendicular to the external potential. As the cause of the orientation we identified the tendency towards the Wigner crystallization as the origin. Namely, it causes modulation of the stripe, and forms an energy gap at the Fermi level. Then compressibility acquires anisotropy that causes the orientation of the stripe. Furthermore, we investigated how the pairing state in the second lowest Landau level evolves when the layer separation is increased in a bi-layer systems. Thus we obtained an phase diagram on the layer-separation and the inter-layer tunneling strength. Apart from these investigations, we investigated the ground state at total filling one. For these investigations we obtained various new findings. We are planning to publish these results in the near future.

In this research project, we have performed large-scale numerical study on the ground state and thermodynamic properties of strongly correlated electron systems. Parallel computers with several hundreds of nodes, supercomputers with high vectorization performance, and workstation clusters are used to carry on various types of numerical simulations. Summary of the obtained results is the following. The one-dimensional Kondo lattice model is studied by the density-matrix renormalization-group method. We have calculated the dynamic correlation function of local spin and charge correlations for the hole doped case. We find small new energy scales upon hole doping, and we discuss the relationship between these energy scales and collective excitations in the luttinger-liquid ground state. We also demonstrate the competition between the RKKY interaction of local spins and the Kondo screening due to itinerant electrons, based on the results of the antiferromagnetic spin susceptibility. We have calculated the single-electron spectrum and pairing correlations in the two-dimensional t-J model, to study the correlation of (π, 0) level and the d-wave superconductivity. We show that the superconductivity could be enhanced by level tuning of the (π, 0) level to the Fermi energy by artificial design of electron hoppings. We have performed the quantum Monte-Carlo parallel simulations on the three-dimensional double exchange model using large-scale workstation/PC clusters. The critical exponent of ferromagnetic transition in this model is determined. We have developed and improved various routines and tools for parallelized numerical diagonalization of the t-J model.

We have carried out theoretical investigations for the quantum phase transition between the spin-liquid and magnetically ordered phases. As well as the magnetic properties, effects on the charge dynamics have been studied. To this end, numerical calculations have been performed on three microscopic models : two-leg ladder system, the one-dimensional Kondo lattice, and the two-dimensional t-J model including additional electron-pair hopping processes. To study the metallic spin-liquid phase, we have calculated the optical conductivity of the two-leg t-J ladder model at finite temperatures. The results show that its frequency dependence indicates an incoherent character similar to the two dimensional case at high temperatures. With decreasing temperature, an incoherent-to-coherent crossover takes place with accompanied by a pseudogap formation. This crossover is determined by the energy scale of the spin gap. The electron dynamics in the two dimensions has been studied by calculating the Drude weight at zero temperature. The calculation was performed for the t-J model including electron-pair hopping processes. We have found that the conventional t-J model has the dynamic exponent, z=4, which dominates the incoherent dynamics observed near the metal- insulator transition. On the other hand, when the electron-pair hoppings are switched on, the dynamic exponent is z=2 and the electron dynamics recovers coherence. The one-dimensional Kondo lattice model has been studied to see the critical behavior associated with hole doping for the spin-liquid state at half filling. Thermodynamics and local dynamic correlations have been calculated with the finite-temperature density-matrix renormalization-group method : We have found that the spin gap at half filling persists upon hole doping as the crossover energy scale dominating the local singlet formation. It is also found that a new energy scale appears in the lower energy region and it is determined by the energy scale of the Luttinger liquid ground state.
