Unsaturated alcohols can be synthesized by selective hydrogenation of unsaturated carbonyl compounds, and they are used as important intermediates for perfumes and medicines. However, since selective hydrogenation of the carbonyl group in unsaturated carbonyl compounds is thermodynamically and kinetically unfavorable, development of effective heterogeneous catalysts for the reaction is desirable. In this study, hydrogenation of unsaturated carbonyl compounds (unsaturated aldehydes and unsaturated ketones) to the corresponding unsaturated alcohols was investigated using metal oxide modified noble metal catalysts, showing that Ir-FeOx/MgO catalyst is effective for the reaction.

    Selective hydrogenation of the carbonyl group of unsaturated ketones over heterogeneous catalysts is an useful reaction for the synthesis of unsaturated alcohols. Selective hydrogenation of unsaturated ketones to unsaturated alcohols was investigated using benzylideneacetone as a model substrate. MgO supported Ir-FeOx catalyst(Ir-FeOx/MgO catalyst Fe/Ir molar ratio=0.5) showed high activity and selectivity for the reaction. The Ir-FeOx/MgO catalyst was characterized by various techniques such as XPS and FT-IR.

    Cyclic carbamates, which is useful in the pharmaceutical and agrochemical intermediates, were synthesized from carbon dioxide and aminoalcohols using ceria catalyst. Acetonitrile has high solubility of carbon dioxide and is the most effective solvent. In optimized reaction conditions, 2-oxazolidinone is obtained from 2-aminoethanol with 97% yield. When this catalyst system was applied to aminoalcohols which have –OH and –NHR groups at 1 and 2-positions or 1 and 3-positions, five- and six-membered-ring carbamates can be selectively synthesized in high yield.

    The Ni/Mg/Al catalysts were prepared from the calcination and reduction of hydrotalcite-like compounds. The Ni/Mg/Al catalysts have a nanocomposite structure of Ni metal particles and Mg(Ni, Al)O particles. The Ni/Mg/Al catalysts showed high catalytic performance in the steam reforming of biomass-derived tar. In the present study, we also prepared Ni-Cu/Mg/Al catalysts from the calcination and reduction of hydrotalcite-like compounds. The performance of the Ni-Cu/Mg/Al catalysts was investigated in terms of catalytic activity, suppression of coke deposition in the steam reforming of biomass-derived tar.

    The purpose of this study is to develop transformation reactions of lignin fraction in lignocellulose, which is the most abundant renewable carbon resource. I used guaiacol and cresol as model substrates of mixture of decomposition products of lignin. I found several catalytic reactions, such as Ru + base catalysts for removal of methoxy group, vanadium catalysts for oxidation of hydrogenated derivatives of guaiacol into adipic acid, Pt catalysts for dehydrogenation-demethoxylation of the hydrogenated derivatives of guaiacol, and Pt-Pd catalysts for oxidation of the methyl substituent in cresol.

    Protein(peptide) can be regarded as one of biomass-derived key materials, and can be obtained from green biomass. Therefore, development of transformation methods of protein is required. Dissociation of the amide bonds is one strategy for that, however, the methods that use stoichiometric amount of acids or bases are used as main ones, and alternative environmentally-benign methods are required. In this study, we investigated heterogeneous catalysts that enables direct cleavage of C-N bond in amide by hydrogenation, and found that N2-treated Ru/CeO2 catalyst showed high activity and selectivity for the reaction and that the small Ru particles over Ru/CeO2 are responsible active species for the high performance.

    Organic chemicals including resins and polymers have been produced mainly from petrolium. In order to conduct a sustainable society, one of important subjects is the development of environment-bengin method for the production of chemicals. One of the remarkably efficient methods is the production of various chemicals from biomass is to recude the oxygen content in the biomass-derived substrate. Usually, high pressure hydrogen is used for the reduction. In this research, the purpose is to develop the catalysts for C-O hydrogenolysis using the intramolecular hydrogen transfer, and it is found that MoOx-modified Rh metal catalysts was very effective to this reaction system.

    Hydrodeoxygenation of biomass-lignin-derived compounds has been investigated using guaiacol as a model substrate. Both multi-step process and single-step process were developed. The multi-step process involves steps using Rh catalyst, Ru catalyst, and Ir-ReOx catalyst. Cyclohexanol was obtained in good yield. The single-step process uses Ru catalyst and base co-catalyst, giving high yield of cyclohexanol.

    Catalyses of polyoxometalate catalysts with di-vanadium core were investigated. The catalyst with phosphorous as a central atom showed high performance for both epoxidation of alkenes and hydroxylation of alkanes. Catalysts for selective oxidation of aqueous poly-ols were also investigated. The combination of silver and noble metal showed high performance.
