We report on numerical studies of microwave bianisotropies by magnetochiral (MCh) metasurfaces consisting of double Z-type gammadions with perpendicularly magnetized substrates. The metasurfaces’ effective polarizability tensor, extracted from calculated reflection and transmission coefficients, has components of the non-reciprocal moving-type bianisotropy as well as the reciprocal chiral-type bianisotropy and non-reciprocal magneto-optical (MO) effect. The combination of the metasurfaces with contraposition MCh metasurfaces cancels both the chiral-type bianisotropy and MO effect, resulting in pure moving optical media. An achieved perfect transmission with a phase difference of π realizes an ideal gyrator for arbitrary spatial and polarization modes.

A numerical study predicts that a single metamolecule with magnetism and chirality has giant magnetochiral (MCh) effects at microwave frequencies. The magnetism is provided by the ferromagnetic resonance of ferrite under dc bias magnetic fields, while the chirality is provided by the spiral arrangement of dielectric cubes with Mie resonance. The dielectric and magnetic resonances interfere in the metamolecule, resulting in a two-order of magnitude enhancement of the MCh effect compared with that reported in previous studies. This prediction is verified experimentally. A unity-order directional difference in the refractive index caused by the MCh effect is also demonstrated. This study is a significant milestone in the practical use of the MCh effect.

For realizing quantum levitation, we conducted a feasibility study of metamaterial-integrated micro-electro mechanical systems (MEMS) cantilevers. Designs of the cantilevers were discussed based on preliminary experiments and numerical simulation for metallic structures and magnetic films. We decided fabrication of single-beam cantilevers integrated with double-fishnet-type metamaterials having a negative refractive index. We prepared samples using micro-fabrication processes utilized in MEMS. While fabrication of the single-beam cantilevers integrated with silver double-fishnet-type metamaterials has not yet achieved, we have succeeded in preparing a cantilever integrated with aluminum fishnet-type metamaterials.

We studied the propagation characteristics of spin waves using a magnonic crystal with a quasi-periodic structure. Using permalloy or nickel as a material, the LLG equation was numerically solved for the stripe and grating structure. Band structures and eigenmodes were analyzed. We found an interesting structure in which localized states appear at the interface of quasi-periodic magnonic crystals connected with different quasi-periodic sequences. In order to evaluate the characteristics of spin waves, it is necessary to study measurement using the S-parameter method with a coplanar waveguide antenna. Therefore, we conducted experimental and numerical studies on the characteristics of the antenna structures used in spin wave detection. As a consequence, an interesting result was obtained that the nonreciprocity of spin waves can be controlled by the antenna width.

In this work, we first proposed circularly polarized radiation from pseudo-traveling wave resonance antennas based on nonreciprocal metamaterials, and demonstrated it with polarization rotation direction switched by the applied dc magnetic field in the experiment. Second, combination of curvature of lines and asymmetric insertion of inductive stubs has been proposed and demonstrated to enhance the nonreciprocity. Third, design techniques of dispersion-less nonreciprocity in the metamaterials have been established and demonstrated to reduce beam squint to be solved in beam scanning antennas.

We studied electromagnetism in structured metamaterials with simultaneous time-reversal and space-inversion symmetry breaking by magnetism and chirality. Experimental direct observation of optical magnetochiral effects by a single metamolecule with magnetism and chirality was demonstrated at microwave frequencies. Numerical simulations reproduced well the experimental results and predicted the emergence of giant magnetochiral effects by combining resonances in the metamolecule. Microwave transmission patters through magnetochiral and chiral metamaterials were measured. Toward a higher frequency, the metamolecule was miniaturized in the presence of ferromagnetic resonance in a cavity and coplanar waveguide. Application of generalized magneto-optical ellipsometry for microwaves was studied. This work paves the way to the realization of synthetic gauge fields for electromagnetic waves, and to development of meta-condensed-matter physics using metamaterials.

By means of experiments, electromagnetic field simulation and theoretical analysis, novel electromagnetic responses in sub-wavelength artificial structures have been investigated, focusing on periodic metamaterials in optical regime. Microscopic mechanism of photo-induced voltage due to optical rectification in structured thin-metallic film was clarified further after experiments of various designs and conditions. Basic theory on topology optimization for metamaterials was established. Opitcal lighography based on microscopic electric field distribution near the metallic metamaterial surfaces were proposed. Giant magnetochiral effect in metamolecule consisting of ferite and copper coil was discovered experimentally in microwave region and analyzed theoretically.

We constructed an analytical model for precession of a magnetic moment in spin-wave metamaterials consisting of interacting magnetic nanoparticles. It is revealed that the Gilbert damping factor can be controlled by the structure of the metamaterials. Additionally, analytical equations of the macroscopic damping factor were obtained for spin-torque oscillation in the spin-wave metamaterials. The equations indicated that the effective damping factor is dependent on the spin currents whereas the frequency of spin torque oscillation is independent of the spin currents. Moreover, we have experimentally succeeded in fabricating artificial chiral structures made of ferromagnetic-metals and observing a characteristic signal in electron spin resonance spectra. The present study is bringing together metamaterials and spintronics via spin-waves.

Surface-emitting organic laser devices were fabricated by introducing DBR resonators and photonic crystals into dye-doped and π-conjugated thin films. Raman laser oscillations were obtained when the stimulated resonant Raman scattering from those polymer films was coupled with the lasing modes of those resonators. Towards future development of electrically pumped organic lasers, light-emitting field-effect transistors with ambipolar carrier characteristics were fabricated with liquid crystalline π-conjugated polymer films, and electroluminescence was successfully obtained under AC-gate operations.

We studied photoluminescence intensity of semiconductor nanocrystals in the vicinity of metals. With a decrease in metal-semiconductor distance, the PL intensity was enhanced, and then it decreased dramatically. These results can be explained by considering both the light enhancement effect and the energy transfer effect from the semiconductors induced by the free electrons in the metals. The metal-semiconductor distance for the highest photoluminescence efficiency was found.

Multi-layer metamaterials consisting of Al and MgF_2 layers or Ag and SiO_2 layers have been prepared. Photon transport via coupled surface plasmon polaritons in the metamaterials has been studied experimentally using an attenuated total reflection and resonant photon tunneling measurement system. We found that Ag-SiO_2 metamaterials have a lower intrinsic loss in comparison with Al-MgF_2 metamaterials. Moreover, we revealed that MIM structures consisting of Ag and SiO_2 convey photons resonantly via a characteristic guided mode.
