Abstract The microstructural evolution of the MoSiBTiC alloy by rapid solidification and its effect on oxidation and mechanical properties were investigated in this study. A Mo-5Si-10B-10Ti-10C (at%) alloy was produced by a conventional arc-melting technique in an Ar atmosphere, and then it was rapidly solidified by tilt-casting into a rod-shaped copper hearth. Vickers hardness values increased drastically above 1000 Hv due to the microstructure refinement through rapid solidification. They rose from the center toward the outer surface, ranging from about 1100 to 1300 Hv. Interestingly, the oxidation resistance of the rapidly solidified MoSiBTiC alloy at 1100 °C was dramatically improved, probably due to the microstructure refinement effect with ultrafine grains. However, the fracture toughness value of the rapidly solidified MoSiBTiC alloy was about 8 MPa·m1/2, less than half of the cast and heat-treated MoSiBTiC alloy previously reported. Heat treatment and composition optimization will further improve the performance of the rapidly solidified MoSiBTiC alloy.

Abstract Intermetallic compounds formed from non-precious transition metals are promising cost-effective and robust catalysts for electrochemical hydrogen production. However, the development of monolithic nanoporous intermetallics, with ample active sites and sufficient electrocatalytic activity, remains a challenge. Here we report the fabrication of nanoporous Co7Mo6 and Fe7Mo6 intermetallic compounds via liquid metal dealloying. Along with the development of three-dimensional bicontinuous open porosity, high-temperature dealloying overcomes the kinetic energy barrier, enabling the direct formation of chemically ordered intermetallic phases. Unprecedented small characteristic lengths are observed for the nanoporous intermetallic compounds, resulting from an intermetallic effect whereby the chemical ordering during nanopore formation lowers surface diffusivity and significantly suppresses the thermal coarsening of dealloyed nanostructure. The resulting ultrafine nanoporous Co7Mo6 exhibits high catalytic activity and durability in electrochemical hydrogen evolution reactions. This study sheds light on the previously unexplored intermetallic effect in dealloying and facilitates the development of advanced intermetallic catalysts for energy applications.

    More details Close

Porous Pd42.5Cu30Ni7.5P20 bulk glassy alloy rods with porosities of up to 70% were successfully prepared by high pressure hydrogen of 15 MPa. The melt of Pd42.5Cu30Ni7.5P20 alloy kept under high pressure hydrogen absorbs hydrogen and subsequent water quenching of the melt causes the homogeneous dispersion of hydrogen bubbles, which was resulted from the decrease of hydrogen solubility with decrease of pressure. Annealing the hydrogen bubble containing sample at a supercooled liquid state under vacuum, the bubbles are allowed to expand due to the decrease of viscosity of metallic glass matrix. Pores expansion continues until glassy matrix crystallizes or the equilibration among pressure of the pores, pressure of the atmosphere and surface tension is achieved. By utilizing these phenomena, pores up to 80 m in diameters are homogeneously distributed over the whole cross-sectional area of a fully glassy matrix. Under compressive deformation, the porous alloys with porosities exceeding 40% did not show macroscopic fracture in a wide compressive strain range up to 0.6 whereas the non-porous alloy fractures instantly after elastic limit of about 0.02. Porous bulk glassy alloys exhibit higher plateau stress, lower Young′s modulus and higher energy absorption capacity compared with the conventional crystalline metal foams.

An alloy design for high entropy alloys was established in the present study by combining thermodynamic calculations and valence election concentration control. Representative achievements were high entropy bulk metallic glass (HE-BMG) with critical diameter of 18 mm, and a single hcp and fcc HEA in Ir-Rh-Ru-W-Mo alloy system. Furthermore, precise thermodynamically calculations revealed that there exists a relationship of mixing entropy (Smix) being greater than configuration entropy (Sconfig) as Smix > Sconfig in some of existing HEAs. The present study revealed the truth of entropy, which is the basis of HEAs.

Amorphous Si, which is widely used as a base material for solar cells, is currently available in thin film form made by chemical vapor deposition. If amorphous Si can be obtained in large quantities by liquid quenching, like many other amorphous metals, the range of applications is expected to further expand. However, despite many previous attempts, it has not been possible to obtain bulk amorphous Si directly from liquid Si. In this study, we succeeded in producing amorphous Si by liquid quenching using the single-roll method.

Effects of current flow on the dealloying reaction using liquid medium were studied. When Fe-Ni binary alloy precursor was dealloyed by pure Mg solid, a significant difference on the reaction kinetic was observed, depending on the direction of current flow. That is, a reaction kinetic was accelerated when the current flow is from Fe-Ni precursor to Mg. On the contrary, morphology of the porous metal formed was almost independent on the presence or direction of current flow.

The present study has succeeded in fabricating high-entropy bulk metallic glasses (HE-BMGs) as represented by Fe25Co25Ni25(B, Si)25 alloy with a critical diameter of 1.5 mm for forming glassy phase. The alloys were developed by applying a concept of confusion principle that has effectively been utilized for the alloy development of high-entropy (H-E) alloys of multicomponent equi-atomic compositions. Furthermore, a first success in fabricating H-E alloys with hexagonal dense-packed structure was reported by fabricating YGdTbDyLu and GdTbDyTmLu alloys. In the 5-year project, alloy designs of the H-E and relevant alloys have been established based on statistic analysis.

Imprinting method for fabricating large-area and high aspect ratio pattern was established for Pd-based metallic glass (MG) with high formability and for Gd-based MG with low formability. Sufficient depth of imprinting can be obtained even under the isothermal heating condition at supercooled liquid region for Pd-based MG, while the high-rate isochronal heating condition above crystallization temperature was needed for Gd-based MG. By using imprinting with optimized conditions, we have successfully prepared gratings which are applicable for X-ray and neutron Talbot-Lau interferometer.

Novel method for preparation of open-cell nanoporous base metals by using dealloying reaction in a metallic melt was successfully developed. By immersing an alloy precursor into a metallic melt, specific component was dissolved selectively into a metallic melt and the remaining component self-organized into a nanoporous structure. The analyses on microstructure and compositional changes revealed that the diffusion of solute atom in the metallic melt is a rate limiting step and that the ligament size coarsened for surface relaxation via surface diffusion mechanism. These results indicated that the formation mechanism of nanoporous structure by dealloying in metallic melt is essentially the same with that in aqueous solution.

Strong relationship among fragility (= temperature dependence of viscosity in supercooled liquid state, magnitude of the slow beta relaxation and nanoscale inhomogeneity in metallic glasses is confirmed by investigating relaxation behavior of Pd- and Zr-based alloys. By HAADF-STEM observation, it is newly found that Ar atom can be frozen in weakly bonded region of metallic glass by low energy Ar ion implantation. By analyzing dependence of size and distribution of the frozen Ar nanoparticles on the alloy system and thermal history, we can understand the nanoscale inhomogeneity in metallic glass more clearly.
