  1. Effect of interacting minds on response criterion in two person perceptual decision making. International-journal

Previous studies have indicated that two-person judgments are more accurate than individual judgments in perceptual decision-making. Most studies have indicated that the improvement of performance accuracy reflects changes in visual sensitivity by using a bias-free paradigm to eliminate the effects of decision criteria. However, biases in judgment are natural during daily decision-making. Therefore, we should carefully consider the effect of response bias on two-person decision-making. Thus, this study investigated changes in two-person decision-making using signal detection theory. We conducted two experiments. The results of the two experiments revealed that not only does two-person judgment improve perceptual sensitivity but also shifts the decision criterion. This study provides new insights into response bias as a factor for better understanding two-person interactions.

Own child's face is one of the most socially salient stimuli for parents, and a faster search for it than for other children's faces may help provide warmer and more sensitive care. However, it has not been experimentally examined whether parents find their child's face faster. In addition, although own child's face is specially processed, the search time for own child's face may be similar to that for other socially salient stimuli, such as own or spouse's faces. This study tested these possibilities using a visual search paradigm. Participants (parents) searched for their child's, own, spouse's, other child's, same-sex adult's, or opposite-sex adult's faces as search targets. Our findings indicate that both mothers and fathers identified their child's face more quickly than other children's faces. Similarly, parents found their own and spouse's faces more quickly than other adults' faces. Moreover, the search time for family members' faces increased with the number of faces on the search display, suggesting an attentional serial search. These results suggest that robust face representations learned within families and close relationships can support reduced search times for family members' faces.

We examined the effect of expanding and contracting motion on visual short-term memory (VSTM) by using a change-detection task. One, three, five, or seven expanding or contracting line segments were presented on memory and test displays. The test display was either identical to the memory display or contained a line segment with a different orientation from that in the memory display. The participants were asked to indicate whether the orientation of the line segments changed between the two successive displays. The results showed that the capacity of VSTM for expanding motion was larger than that for contracting motion (Experiment 1). Moreover, in Experiment 2, the capacity of VSTM for expanding motion was superior when the retention interval between the memory and test displays was 400ms. In contrast, under retention intervals of longer than 800ms, VSTM capacity for contracting motion was superior. These results suggest that the effect of expanding and contracting motion on VSTM varies depending on the retention interval.

In motion-induced blindness (MIB), a visual target is frequently perceived to disappear on moving random dots (Bonneh, Cooperman, & Sagi, 2001). In this study, we reported a new crossmodal effect: that a short noise burst releases MIB. In Experiment 1, we showed that the target which disappeared in MIB reappeared soon after the presentation of the burst at the same position as the target. In Experiment 2, we elucidated that the reappearance of the target started approximately 400ms after the burst presentation. In Experiment 3, the bursts were randomly presented for the 30-second stimulus period. The results showed that the disappearance duration of the target was shorter in the burst condition than that in the no-burst condition. These results clearly indicate that abrupt auditory stimuli shorten the duration of reactivating a visual target when the audio-visual stimulation spatially corresponds.

An historical outline of schizophrenia research is described with the close relationship between psychiatry and psychology. Especially, we focused and discussed on the theory of information processing deficits in schizophrenia generated by Broadbent's information processing model (filter theory of attention). In order to show effective methods to elucidate dynamic and active aspects of schizophrenic pathology, we introduced our psychophysiological researches on smooth pursuit eye movements, saccades and prepulse inhibition using the paradigm of self-stimulation. Finally, we suggest that it is necessary to have collaboration between psychiatrists and psychologists for further fruitful research.

We examined the effect of preference for dot-patterns on dot-location memory. The participants were asked to recall the location memory of five dots (Experiment 1), seven dots (Experiment 2) and nine dots (Experiment 3) constituting each pattern. They then rated their preference for the dot-patterns on a five-point scale, from 'likable (1)' to 'dislikable (5)'. We classified the dot-patterns as likable, neutral and dislikable patterns, according to the preference rating scores. The results revealed that location memory performance of the likable and the neutral patterns was better than that of the dislikable patterns in Experiment 1, while there was no significant difference among the three preference classes in Experiment 2. Moreover, in Experiment 3, the performance for the dislikable patterns was the best. The results suggest that the effect of preference on dot-location memory depends on the number of the dots constituting the patterns.

We investigated whether the physical offset of an invisible stimulus could result in the recovery of visual awareness suppressed by motion-induced blindness, in which a target stimulus surrounded by motion distractors often subjectively disappears. Participants were presented with two objects (a target object embedded in an outlined object) that were close to each other. When the two objects disappeared simultaneously, the physical offset of only the outlined object led to the recovery of visual awareness of the target object. Here, we report the basic effect, its spatiotemporal properties, and its relationship with the offset detection of the invisible object.

When two identical visual objects move across each other in a two-dimensional display, there is a perception of streaming through, or bouncing off each other, at the position of their coincidence. In our preliminary observation, a switch of object features such as color between the two objects, biased the perception towards bouncing. We have examined the characteristics of spatiotemporal integration of object features in the stream/bounce event. By changing the duration of the object presentation after a color switch at their coincidence we explored the spatiotemporal properties of object color to substantially affect the stream or bounce event. The results revealed that 100 ms after the color switch, the observers can utilize the color change information to determine the stream/bounce event. Additionally, the percentage of bouncing percepts reached a maximum rate 150 ms after the color switch. A follow-up experiment showed that the results were not affected by the speed of the objects. This result sugges ed that the post-coincidence duration is crucial for spatiotemporal integration of the object color feature in event perception.

Multi-echo planar imaging is an magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequence with which MRI images can be acquired at different echo-times after excitation. This sequences is applied to functional MRI (fMRI) for the removal of non-functional signal artifacts. Another application of this sequence for fMRI involves estimation of information to supplement the functional information by typical fMRI for the creation of a functional brain map. In a previous study, we proposed a novel method by which microscopic neuronal changes originating from population differences could be detected. Multi-echo planar imaging can be problematic due to artifacts caused by magnetic susceptibility in the boundary regions between the brain tissues and other brain compartments. This occurs because of different transverse relaxation times. In this study, we examined the way head motion affects signals acquired at different echo-times by multi-echo planar imaging. It was found that the motion signal patterns were slightly different between two images with different echo-times. We devised a method to remove this discrepancy. which was successfully applied.

We examined the effects of visual preference for spatial configuration of objects on visual short-term memory (VSTM). Participants recalled 9-, 7-, and 5-dot locations in spatial configurations in Experiment 1 (spatial memory task). In Experiment 2, participants responded whether orientations of line segments between successive displays were same or different (non-spatial memory task). In the task, 9-, 7-, and 5-line segments were arrayed in the same way as in Experiment 1. After the memory tasks, participants were incidentally asked to rate the preference for configurations. We classified configurations into "likable" and "dislikable" ones based on preference-rating score. Results showed that the performance of dislikable configurations was higher than that of likable configurations in 9 dots (Experiment 1). The same trends were significant in all 9, 7, and 5 locations (Experiment 2). These results indicate that preference is one of the important factors for spatial/non-spatial VSTM.

We examined the modulatory effects of expanding/contracting motion on the capacity of visual short-term memory (VSTM). We used a change detection task in which participants judged whether the orientations of line segments were the same or different between two successively presented displays. We estimated the VSTM capacity based on the accuracy, and compared the capacity for line segments between expanding and contracting motion. As the results, the VSTM capacity for expanding objects was larger than that for contracting objects when the set size was five and seven in experiment 1. Furthermore, the possible account of recency effects of object size were excluded in experiment 2. These results indicated that expanding objects predominantly modulate the capacity of VSTM compared with contracting objects. We discussed these results in terms of possible differences of the expanding/contracting motion processing together with ecological validity.

Previous studies have showed that visual system has higher sensitivity to expansion than contraction motion. Furthermore, it has been also indicated that visual preference ratings more increases in expansion than in contraction motion. Although there is ample evidence for modulatory effects of expansion motion on visual processing, it remains to be solved whether expansion/contraction motion modulates the higher-order visual processing such as visual short-term memory (VSTM). Therefore, in this study, we used a change detection task to examine the VSTM capacity for expansion/contraction motion stimuli. The task was to decide whether the orientations of line segments were the same or different in between successive displays. Results showed that the capacity for the segments containing expansion were larger than that for contraction motion as the set size increased from 5 to 7 segments. These results revealed that expansion motion predominantly modulated the higher-order processing (VSTM) as well as the early processing.

It has been indicated that subjective rating such as goodness showed a very high correlation to the redundancy of visual pattern. In contrast, affective characteristics such as preference and pleasure are hard to correspond with the redundancy. Therefore, it remains to be solved what sorts of effects affective characteristics have on the recognition of visual pattern. Firstly, in this study, we examined the internal criteria to be included in visual pattern, using semantic differential method. By principal factor method, factors were extracted: Figural coherence, Evaluation, Activity, and Potency. Further, we controlled the redundancy and examined the influences of the affective characteristics by means of cluster analyses on the factor scores. As a result, the clusters were divided significantly in Evaluation factor. We discuss affective characteristics, which are hard to be predicted by the redundancy, together with their considerable effects on the pattern recognition.

We examined the effect of preference for dot-patterns on location memory. Observers were asked to recall the locations of five dots (Experiment 1), seven dots (Experiment 2) and nine dots-pattern (Experiment 3) constituting patterns. And then they rated the preference of dot-patterns on a five-point scale. We classified dot-patterns as "like", "neutral" and "dislike" patterns, based on preference rating scores. As a result, memory performance of the "like" and "neutral" rated dot-patterns was better than that of the "dislike" dot-patterns in Experiment 1, and in Experiment 2, there was no significant difference of three preference class. Moreover, performance in Experiment 3 was the best for the "dislike dot-patterns". From the results mentioned above, it was suggested that the effect of preference on location memory for dots were depending on the number of the dots constituting patterns. Moreover, we examined whether this dependence on dot number can be explained by semantic level differences of dot patterns, using semantic differential (SD) method. By factor analysis with varimax rotation, three factors (Morphological factor, Evaluation factor and Potential factor) were extracted. The factor scores of dot-patterns were compared; there were significant differences between five dots-patterns and seven and nine dots-pattern but no significant differences between seven dots-patterns and nine dots-patterns. Therefore, we suggested that the preference effect on location memory may be obtained at the levels of perceptual processing, rather than semantic processing.

We investigated neural activity corresponding to three main dimensions (Evaluation, Activity, and Potency) extracted from factor analysis of observers' subjective rating of Haiku poems, with nine bipolar scales of adjective pairs (3-point scale). We obtained brain activities distributed over occipital, frontal and limbic lobes corresponding to each dimensions. Moreover, we examined conjunction brain areas among three dimensions, and then the analysis showed activity in the ventral striatum which may have important role in the judging or evaluating impression. These results suggest that psychological structures of impressions can be expressed in terms of neural activities.

In the present study, we used a functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate neural activity corresponding to three main dimensions (Evaluation, Activity, and Potency) extracted from factor analysis of observers' subjective ratings of drawings, with nine bipolar scales of adjective pairs (3-point scale). We could extract brain activities of inferior frontal gyrus corresponding to the Evaluation dimension. Corresponding to the Activity dimension, the activation of superior temporal gyrus was found. Corresponding to the Potency dimension, superior frontal gyrus, middle frontal gyrus and inferior parietal lobule were significantly activated. These results clearly suggest that psychological structures of the impressions of pictures can be expressed in terms of neural activities.

Static visual stimuli superimposed on moving pattern perceptually disappear (motion-induced blindness: MIB). We reported that short tone-bursts recover visual awareness suppressed by MIB. We presented a yellow square as a visual target on a moving pattern. Participants were asked to press and release an assigned key corresponding to the disappearance and the reappearance of the target. The tone-bursts (pure tone of 1.8kHz; duration 50ms) were presented immediately after participants' disappearance response. These bursts were either presented on the same or the different side as the target on the screen in order to test the effects of spatial consistency across audiovisual stimulation (Experiment 1). We also varied the A-weighted sound pressure level (45 to 85dB) to test the robustness of the recovering effect (Experiment 2). Finally we manipulated the number of tones to investigate summation effect of auditory cues (Experiment 3). The results showed that the awareness of the suppressed target was quickly recovered only after the presentation of tone-bursts of 25dB above in contrast to the back ground noise, on the same side as the target. Furthermore, this recovering effect was independent of the number of tones. These results indicated that the visual awareness level could be spatial-selectively increased when the sound pressure was greater than a constant level.

We investigated the effect of a physical offset of an invisible object on visual awareness using motion-induced blindness (MIB). The two objects (a target object and an outlined object) were presented nearby to each other. When observers reported that both objects perceptualy disappear, the invisible outlined object physically was excluded. We found that the invisible offset leads to the recovery of visual awareness of the target object. When the invisible offset occurs up to about 1 deg of visual angle around the target object, the awareness recovery by the offset persisted. Also, as the time passed after the perceptual disappearance of both objects, the invisible offset speeded the recovery of visual awareness from MIB. Moreover, we indicated a possibility that the awareness was recovered before the detection of the invisible offset. These results were discussed in terms of visual attention accompanied with the transient change of neural representations due to the invisible offset.

In this study, we investigated how proximity and closure cues interactively have an effect on object representations by analyzing the perceptual disappearance patterns of visual targets in motion-induced blindness (MIB). We presented two stimuli in which an inner target (a solid square) was embedded in an outer target (an outlined square), and asked participants to report whether the targets disappeared simultaneously or independently during MIB stimulus presentation (30s). In all experiments, we manipulated the distance between the targets and the contour closure of outer target. Especially, the former was manipulated systematically in Experiment 1, and the latter was manipulated systematically in Experiment 2. The results of both Experiments 1 and 2 showed that when the separation between the targets was 0.2deg, proximity cue most influenced the disappearance patterns of the targets, regardless of closure cue. Meanwhile, with the separation of 0.4deg, proximity and closure cues influenced the disappearance patterns of the targets cooperatively. Furthermore, with the separation of 0.6deg, closure cue most influenced the disappearance patterns of the targets. We showed that each perceptual grouping cue has a different effective spatial range. These results suggest that the visual system weights each perceptual grouping cue depending on the spatial distance between visual stimuli, and then the multiple perceptual grouping cues interactively affect object representations.

The current research investigated depth information contained in the representation of apparently moving 3-D objects. We measured the magnitude of representational momentum (RM) as index of the consistency of object's shape. Experiment 1A found that RM magnitude was higher when shaded convex moving objects shifted to a flat circle than when that shifted to a shaded concave hemisphere. This difference diminished in the case that the moving objects were the concave (Experiment 1B). Experiment 2 confirmed that these results did not stem from luminance information of shading using luminance-polarized circles. Moreover, Experiment 3 showed that RM magnitude was higher when the convex moving objects shifted to blurred convex hemispheres with low-pass filters than when that shifted to the concave hemispheres. The results suggest that internal representations contain incomplete depth information intermediate between those of 2-D and 3-D objects especially for convexity with low-spatial frequency dominance properties in apparent motion.

In a visual scene, the visual system can group discrete visual stimuli into a single object, based on some visual cues. We define the term 'object singleness' as equivalent to perceptual grouping producing a single object. To investigate whether perceptual grouping rules (proximity and closure) substantially constrain the perception of object singleness, we devised a set of experiments using motion-induced blindness (MIB) paradigm. In this study, an inner target (a solid square) was centered on an outer target (an outlined square). Both targets were superimposed on a rotating grid. By modulating the degree of proximity between the inside edge of the outer target and the outside edge of the inner target as a gap distance, we showed that both targets fade away from awareness as a single object in the small gap distance condition, but not in the large gap distance (Experiment 1A and B). We further showed that when the contour of the outer object was unclosed, even in the small gap distance condition, one of the targets fade away from awareness as a discrete object (Experiment 2). These findings suggest that both proximity and closure rules can significantly contribute to object singleness and modulate visual awareness.

Two identical visual objects moving across each other can be perceived either the objects streaming through or bouncing off each other. Sekular, Sekular, & Lau (1997) found that the bouncing event percept can be facilitated by presenting a brief sound at the point of coincidence of the two objects. However, Kawachi & Gyoba (in preparation) found that even when the sound is presented, streaming percept can strongly be induced by the presence of a nearby moving object that is irrelevant to the stream/bounce event. Here we examined a possibility that event perception can be altered by the amodal representation of the event-irrelevant object during occlusion. As a result, the temporally occluded moving object strongly facilitated streaming percept. By contrast, when the motion trajectory of the occluded object was spatiotemporally discontinuous, the alternation of event perception did not occur. These results indicate that, when the representation of the moving object is amodally persisting during occlusion, the maintained representation can alter the percept of a nearby audiovisual event.

It has been pointed out that the internal representations of apparently moving objects are formed in the path of apparent motion, in which physical inputs are absent. However, there have been no studies exploring whether two-dimensional (2-D) or three-dimensional (3-D) objects are represented in the motion path. In this research, we used the 3-D shaded objects (convex or concave) as moving objects and 3-D objects of the same kinds or 2-D objects (flat) as probe objects, which were briefly presented in the midst of motion path. We investigated how the probe objects affected the perceived direction or smoothness of apparent motion. Since the probe objects had no effect on the perception of motion direction, the internal representations are considered to have 2-D properties concerning the motion direction. By contrast, the probe objects significantly affected the perceived smoothness especially in the case of the convex moving objects, suggesting that the internal representations retained not only 2-D information but also 3-D information, especially the information of convexity. This bias toward convexity is in line with the concept of 2^<1/2> sketch (Marr, 1982). These results indicated that apparently moving objects are represented as intermediate contents between 2-D and 3-D images.

An attempt was made in this study to create a dynamic functional brain map related to brain activities. In fMRI experiments with checker pattern stimulation at 20 Hz for inducing such rapid neural activity, the latencies of the signals were in the order of thalamus, visual cortex, insular cortex. We futher tried to make a dynamic functional brain map through resting fMRI signals because resting state fMRI was a method that could get stable signals for the map. For the purpose, it was made sure that the resting fMRI signals reflected the BOLD effect by showing a linear change of multi-echo fMRI signals with respect to the echo-time in many brain regions. By analyzing the resting fMRI signals in the whole brain, we could identify 96 brain regions related to visual, auditory, emotion, memory, attention, taste, and language. Then we could create a dynamic functional brain map based on the latency patterns from the primary sensory cortices to the higher cortices.

Although both measurements target emotional intelligence (EI), previous studies indicated that questionnaire- and task-EI were not correlated with each other. Here we devised new EI tasks and stimuli and combined brain measures with psychological measures to comprehensively understand various aspects of EI. (1) We devised emotional tasks and stimuli (faces, sentences, and animations) and the corresponding emotional responses were quantified. (2) We explored the relationships among EI, general intelligence (GI) and executive functions (EF), showing that questionnaire-EI was correlated with questionnaire-EF but not with GI and task-EF. (3) We used a measure of regional gray matter volume (rGMV) to examine the relationship between EI and personality. Results showed that the rGMV associated with EI mainly overlapped with that of personality. (4) We devised new support vector machine classifiers related to brain structural and functional data for EI as a target to estimate individual EI.

The present research concerning eidetics and synesthesia yielded the following new findings. (1) The identification tests of eidetikers and synesthetes among Japanese collage students showed that the ratio of synesthetes within eidetikers was approximately 50%, synesthetes with eidetics were mostly localizer type, and eidetikers and synesthetes showed higher scores of imagination related questionnaires (VVIQ, OSlQ, CEQ). (2) Neuroimaging data (VBM and resting state fMRI) suggested that eidetikers had a specific brain structure and a functional connectivity network. In fNIRS studies, eidetikers showed stronger activation of occipital early visual areas during visualizing tasks. (3) In addition, eidetikers shows a perceptual peculiarity in imaging: that is 'eidetic smooth pursuit eye movement' occurring without real moving stimulus or a specific response to the task visualizing imaginary digit sequences. Based on these findings, a model of the related neurocognitive bases was proposed.

It is necessary to obtain dynamic characteristics for understanding the mechanism of the brain function. To measure the dynamic characterisits, the development of ultra high-speed MRI measurement method which can measure fast signals accompanied by the nerve activity such as nerve current and synapse was required. In this study, we have realized an ultra high-speed MRI measurement that can sample data in a sub-millisecond (0.8 ms). In addition, in order to measure the brain activity signal seen in normal EEG, we also developed a measurement method to improve the measurement sensitivity by sacrificing the measurement speed. By this MRI measurement method, we could detect fast brain signals seen in EEG.

A potential mechanism of event representation in the brain is momentary integration of intra- and inter-modal sensory information from an ever-changing environment. We investigated the momentary integration process by using a one-time stimulus presentation, not a periodic one. (1) We showed that color-motion (intra-modal) integration processing can cease only after the response selection level. (2) When using a single auditory cue, the brain can resolve the ambiguity of the motion of multiple pairs of disks presented within a temporal window of approximately 100 ms. (3)We showed the visual mislocalization effect in a complex stimulus configuration of objects with opposing trajectories and a tone presented around the instant of the objects’closest distance. These findings contribute to the understanding of the momentary integration of sensory information.

We investigated the brain information processing underlying eidetic imagery using functional neuroimaging methods (NIRS and fMRI). In addition, an intensive interview and self-report measures of the image abilities of eidetic imagers were used. Our study yielded the following new findings. (1) Eidetic imagers have an extremely high object imagery ability controlled by the ventral pathway and relatively lower spatial imagery ability controlled by the dorsal pathway. (2) Strong eidetic imagers are mostly synesthetes. (3) Our functional neuroimaging data revealed that eidetic evocation is associated with strong activation of the prefrontal area and visual area in the occipital lobe in a fNIRS study. Contrary to our expectation, however, we found no evidence for involvement of the V1 in the evocation of eidetic images in a fMRI study. Based on these findings, a hypothetical brain model of eidetic imagery was introduced.

We investigated self-monitoring of one's own state change in association with perceptual experience.(1) We used a subjective disappearance phenomenon to create two experimental situations(subjective and physical target disappearances) in order to examine discrimination of the information source about a target disappearance. When a target physically and abruptly disappeared, observers could discriminate subjective disappearances from physical ones.(2) We showed that the perception of constantly moving objects in the peripheral vision does not necessarily correspond to stimulus processing in the early visual cortex.(3) Participants with high schizotypy were assumed to show weak self-monitoring and reported less subjective disappearance in the lower visual field. On the basis of these findings, we suggest that the presence of abrupt and salient physical changes may be important for successful self-monitoring and that schizotypy may influence perceptual experience. By devising psychophysical tasks in combination with personality study, we show that the analysis of self-monitoring is possible.

This research project aims at precisely describing multimodal perception from the view point of spatiotemporal event marking to build up brain computation models to describe perception of high-level kansei information such as verisimilitude, presence and naturalness for multimedia information. Based on such knowledge, this project also aims at providing quantitative design guidelines for multimedia spatiotemporal information display systems. As results of this project, we have accumulated a lot of new knowledge on multimodal spatiotemporal perception and have described human perception models of high-level kansei information. Finally, we have drawn up the quantitative design guidelines for multimedia spatiotemporal information display systems.
