Abstract The optical transparency of silica glass significantly improves when subjected to compression at its melting temperature. Using a rare hydrostatic iso-pressure apparatus capable of reaching 0.98 GPa at 1800 °C with Ar gas as the pressure medium, we obtained centimeter-sized glass samples, allowing us to measure various properties. Both the density and refractive index increased with pressure, while the refractive index dispersion decreased monotonically. However, Rayleigh scattering intensity, and small ring structures show a minimum around 0.8 GPa. High-energy X-ray scattering analysis indicates that the short-range structure, around 4 Å, governs the monotonic trends in the averaged physical properties, such as density and refractive index. In contrast, non-monotonic changes are observed with the disappearance of intermediate-range order at around 8 Å. This simplification of structural ordering is crucial for achieving extreme transparency in silica glass. The effect of suppression of the 8 Å order is well explained by the predicted topological pruning phenomenon, where large voids and small unstable ring structures vanish, leading to the minimal light scattering under high pressure. Our experimental findings also reveal that the optimal pressure for achieving this transparency is much lower than previously predicted, which makes the process more feasible for mass-production applications.

Abstract The corrosion behavior of sodium silicate glass in water may be understood by clarifying the fundamental processes of interface reactions. We investigated the reaction mechanism of the glass surfaces in contact with water for just an immediate dipping up to 1 h later, using x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Silanol formation due to ion exchange of sodium with hydrogen from water was observed from 0 to 30 s, similar to previously reported molecular dynamics simulations. However, the amount of silanol groups decreased after the formation reaction owing to the dehydration of excess silanol groups generated by the initial reactions, thereby promoting the re‐formation of siloxane networks at the glass surface. The generated siloxane network was relatively stable for 30 min owing to their rather rigid network. The silanol group concentration increased gradually at the surface after 30 min, owing to a deficiency of dissolved sodium ions. Thereafter, the sodium ions attracted to the negatively charged glass surface gradually left the surface, resulting in an increase of silanol groups when the glass–water reaction proceeded. These observations of the glass–water reaction over a short period provide insight for improving the durability of sodium silicate glass products and developing efficient polishing and cleaning procedures for glass fabrication.

Abstract Intercalation into 1D transition metal trichalcogenides (TMTs) in which fibers are bonded by a weak van der Waals force can be expected to create various intercalation compounds and develop unique physical properties according to the combination of the host materials and guest ions. However, structural changes via intercalation into 1D TMTs are not as simple as those in 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and are still not understood comprehensively. ZrTe3: a typical compound with a 1D trigonal prismatic structure, belongs to TMTs. Herein, through the Ag introduction to ZrTe3 via solid‐state intercalation, a novel crystal phase with a 1D octahedral structure and a quasi‐amorphous (QA) phase during the structural transition are discovered; the QA phase is a novel state of matter in which long‐range order is lost while retaining 1D order. Based on the Ag concentration, the transport properties are flexibly modulated from superconductivity to semiconductivity. Density functional theory calculations indicate the attraction between Ag ions and the pair diffusion due to their attraction. Furthermore, judging the attraction or repulsion between guest ions predicts whether to induce a QA phase or simple lattice expansion like the intercalation into 2D TMDs.

Abstract
The ion-exchange and associated interfacial reaction mechanisms of silicate glasses are critical in elucidating their aqueous corrosion behaviors, surface modification and property changes, hence have potential impact on both science and technology. This work reports findings of the atomic and nanoscale details of the glass–water interfacial reactions revealed by applying reactive force field (ReaxFF) based molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, from which the key mechanisms of the ion exchange, as well as the kinetics of associated interfacial reactions, are elucidated. It was found that the Na+ and H+ ion exchange can happen between two oxygen ions on a single silicon oxygen tetrahedron or adjacent tetrahedra. In addition, the clustered reaction of two non-bridging oxygens mediated by an adjacent water molecule was also identified. The latter reaction might be the main mechanism of water transport after initial surface reactions that consume the non-bridging oxygen species on the surface. Water molecules thus can play two roles: as an intermediate during the proton transfer processes and as a terminator of the clustered reactions. Statistical analyses were performed to obtain reaction kinetics and the results show that silanol formation is a more favored process than the silanol re-formation within the first 3 ns of interfacial reactions. The results obtained thus shed lights on the complex ion-exchange mechanisms during glass hydration and enable more detailed understanding of the corrosion and glass–water interactions of silicate glasses.

Abstract
Silica glass is the most indispensable material in optical communication applications due to its superior optical properties. The transmission loss of silica glass has been reduced over the past 30 years by continuous efforts toward decreasing density fluctuations by lowering of fictive temperature, e.g., through improvements in processing or doping. A recent study has shown that shrinkage of structural voids by hot compression is a promising way to further decrease the loss. However, an atomic understanding of the pressure effect is still lacking. Here, using molecular simulations, we connect the void shrinkage to topological pruning of silica network. Two physical models predict that the Rayleigh scattering loss of pressure-quenched silica glass can be reduced by >50% when the glass is quenched at an appropriate pressure (4 GPa in our simulation). Our studies are consistent with available experimental results and demonstrate topologically optimized structure can give desirable properties for optical applications of silica as well as other glasses with similar network structure.

    More details Close

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) is a powerful technique in the characterization of void sizes in various kinds of materials. In this work, silica glasses with different fictive temperatures (<I>Tf</I>) were investigated using PALS. Although the density of silica glass is well known as to increase – so that the space is supposed to decrease - with higher <I>Tf</I>, voids were observed to expand. Considering the results of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, a picture of structure and voids and its temperature dependence in silica glass will be proposed.
