Abstract This study presents the ozone monitoring instrument (OMI) Collection 4 formaldehyde (HCHO) retrieval developed with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory's (SAO) Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) algorithm. The retrieval algorithm updates and makes improvements to the NASA operational OMI HCHO (OMI Collection 3 HCHO) algorithm, and has been transitioned to use OMI Collection 4 Level‐1B radiances. This paper describes the updated retrieval algorithm and compares Collection 3 and Collection 4 data products. The OMI Collection 4 HCHO exhibits remarkably improved stability over time in comparison to the OMI Collection 3 HCHO product, with better precision and the elimination of artificial trends present in the Collection 3 during the later years of the mission. We validate the OMI Collection 4 HCHO data product using Fourier‐Transform Infrared (FTIR) ground‐based HCHO measurements. The climatological monthly averaged OMI Collection 4 HCHO vertical column densities (VCDs) agree well with the FTIR VCDs, with a correlation coefficient of 0.83, root‐mean‐square error (RMSE) of molecules , regression slope of 0.79, and intercept of molecules . Additionally, we compare the monthly averaged OMI Collection 4 HCHO VCDs to OMPS Suomi NPP, OMPS NOAA‐20, and TROPOMI HCHO VCDs in overlapping years for 12 geographic regions. This comparison demonstrates high correlation coefficients of 0.98 (OMPS Suomi NPP), 0.97 (OMPS NOAA‐20), and 0.90 (TROPOMI).

Abstract HCFC‐22 is an ozone‐depleting substance with a greenhouse effect. The atmospheric mole fractions of HCFC‐22 have been increasing since the 1950s. Within the NDACC‐IRWG network, HCFC‐22 mol fractions can be retrieved from solar absorption spectra measured by ground‐based FTIR. However, only a few sites have provided HCFC‐22 data sets. Here, we demonstrate a harmonized FTIR HCFC‐22 retrieval strategy and generate a new global NDACC‐IRWG HCFC‐22 data set at 16 FTIR sites. The systematic and random uncertainties are 5.3%–8.7% and 3.2%–8.0%, respectively. A maximum HCFC‐22 column annual growth rate was observed in 2009 with a mean of 7.65 ± 1.39 ppt/year, and the HCFC‐22 annual growth rate decreased to 3.57 ± 1.39 ppt/year (2016–2020) and 2.15 ± 2.09 ppt/year (2021–2023). The annual growth rates derived from the FTIR measurements are compared to the ones derived from NOAA surface flask samplings and ACE‐FTS satellite measurements, and the three independent data sets show a good agreement.

Abstract. Spaceborne formaldehyde (HCHO) measurements constitute an excellent proxy for the sources of non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs). Past studies suggested substantial overestimations of NMVOC emissions in state-of-the-art inventories over major source regions. Here, the QA4ECV (Quality Assurance for Essential Climate Variables) retrieval of HCHO columns from OMI (Ozone Monitoring Instrument) is evaluated against (1) FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared) column observations at 26 stations worldwide and (2) aircraft in situ HCHO concentration measurements from campaigns conducted over the USA during 2012–2013. Both validation exercises show that OMI underestimates high columns and overestimates low columns. The linear regression of OMI and aircraft-based columns gives ΩOMI=0.651Ωairc+2.95×1015 molec.cm-2, with ΩOMI and Ωairc the OMI and aircraft-derived vertical columns, whereas the regression of OMI and FTIR data gives ΩOMI=0.659ΩFTIR+2.02×1015 molec.cm-2. Inverse modelling of NMVOC emissions with a global model based on OMI columns corrected for biases based on those relationships leads to much-improved agreement against FTIR data and HCHO concentrations from 11 aircraft campaigns. The optimized global isoprene emissions (∼445Tgyr-1) are 25 % higher than those obtained without bias correction. The optimized isoprene emissions bear both striking similarities and differences with recently published emissions based on spaceborne isoprene columns from the CrIS (Cross-track Infrared Sounder) sensor. Although the interannual variability of OMI HCHO columns is well understood over regions where biogenic emissions are dominant, and the HCHO trends over China and India clearly reflect anthropogenic emission changes, the observed HCHO decline over the southeastern USA remains imperfectly elucidated.

Abstract Precipitation of solar energetic particles (SEPs) into planetary atmospheres causes changes in atmospheric chemical composition through ionization, dissociation, and excitation of atmospheric molecules. In contrast to the terrestrial atmosphere, where depletion of ozone in the polar mesosphere has been studied by observations and models for decades, there have been no studies on the effects of SEPs on the neutral chemical composition of Mars' present‐day atmosphere. This study provided the first estimate of the impacts of SEPs on neutral chemical composition in the present‐day Martian atmosphere coupling a Monte Carlo model and a one‐dimensional photochemical model. Our results showed that ozone density in the Martian atmosphere might decrease in the altitude range of 20–60 km with a factor 10 maximum enhancement occurring at 40 km during a Halloween‐class SEP event due to an enhanced concentration of HOx. The depletion of ozone occurred in the altitude range of 20–60 km, corresponding to the penetration of protons with an energy range of 4.6–46 MeV. Such ozone depletion should be detected by Trace Gas Orbiter/Nadir and Occultation for MArs Discovery during intense SEP event. A 75% depletion of the ozone density at 40 km can be expected during SEP events occurring once in every 1 year. Therefore, ozone concentration in the Martian atmosphere might sufficiently decrease during a SEP event as on Earth, but through different chemical pathways driven by CO2 ionization and CO recombination catalytic cycle.

Abstract We introduce a new flexible one-dimensional photochemical model named Photochemical and RadiatiOn Transport model for Extensive USe (PROTEUS), which consists of a Python graphical user interface (GUI) program and Fortran 90 modules. PROTEUS is designed for adaptability to many planetary atmospheres, for flexibility to deal with thousands of or more chemical reactions with high efficiency, and for intuitive operation with GUI. Chemical reactions can be easily implemented into the Python GUI program in a simple string format, and users can intuitively select a planet and chemical reactions on GUI. Chemical reactions selected on GUI are automatically analyzed by string parsing functions in the Python GUI program, then applied to the Fortran 90 modules to simulate with the selected chemical reactions on a selected planet. We performed a benchmark test of PROTEUS to confirm its validity, by applying it to the Martian atmosphere and the Jovian ionosphere. PROTEUS can significantly save the time for those who need to develop a new photochemical model; users just need to write chemical reactions in the Python GUI program and just select them on GUI to run a new photochemical model. Anomalies of tropospheric columns of ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO), acetylene (C2H2), formaldehyde (H2CO), and ethane (C2H6) are quantified during the 2020 stringent COVID-19 world-wide lockdown using multiple ground-based Fourier-transform infrared spectrometers covering urban and remote conditions. We applied an exponential smoothing forecasting approach to the data sets to estimate business-as-usual values for 2020, which are then contrasted with actual observations. The Community Atmosphere Model with chemistry (CAM-chem) is used to simulate the same gases using lockdown-adjusted and business-as-usual emissions. The role of meteorology, or natural variability, is assessed with additional CAM-chem simulations. The tropospheric column of O3 declined between March and May 2020 for most sites with a mean decrease of 9.2% ± 4.7%. Simulations reproduce these anomalies, especially under background conditions where natural variability explains up to 80% of the decline for sites in the Northern Hemisphere. While urban sites show a reduction between 1% and 12% in tropospheric CO, the remote sites do not show a significant change. Overall, CAM-chem simulations capture the magnitude of the anomalies and in many cases natural variability and lockdowns have opposite effects. We further used the long-term record of the Measurements of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT) satellite instrument to capture global anomalies of CO. Reductions of CO vary highly across regions but North America and Europe registered lower values in March 2020. The absence of CO reduction in April and May, concomitant with reductions of anthropogenic emissions, is explained by a negative anomaly in the hydroxyl radical (OH) found with CAM-chem. The implications of these findings are discussed for methane (CH4), which shows a positive lifetime anomaly during the COVID-19 lockdown period. The fossil fuel combustion by-product tracer C2H2 shows a mean drop of 13.6% ± 8.3% in urban Northern Hemisphere sites due to the reduction in emissions and in some sites exacerbated by natural variability. For some sites with anthropogenic influence there is a decrease in C2H6. The simulations capture the anomalies but the main cause may be related to natural variability. H2CO declined during the stringent 2020 lockdown in all urban sites explained by reductions in emissions of precursors.

Abstract. We retrieved lower stratospheric vertical profiles of O3, HNO3, and HCl from solar spectra taken with a ground-based Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) installed at Syowa Station, Antarctica (69.0∘ S, 39.6∘ E), from March to December 2007 and September to November 2011. This was the first continuous measurement of chlorine species throughout the ozone hole period from the ground in Antarctica. We analyzed temporal variation of these species combined with ClO, HCl, and HNO3 data taken with the Aura MLS (Microwave Limb Sounder) satellite sensor and ClONO2 data taken with the Envisat MIPAS (the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding) satellite sensor at 18 and 22 km over Syowa Station. An HCl and ClONO2 decrease occurred from the end of May at both 18 and 22 km, and eventually, in early winter, both HCl and ClONO2 were almost depleted. When the sun returned to Antarctica in spring, enhancement of ClO and gradual O3 destruction were observed. During the ClO-enhanced period, a negative correlation between ClO and ClONO2 was observed in the time series of the data at Syowa Station. This negative correlation was associated with the relative distance between Syowa Station and the edge of the polar vortex. We used MIROC3.2 chemistry–climate model (CCM) results to investigate the behavior of whole chlorine and related species inside the polar vortex and the boundary region in more detail. From CCM model results, the rapid conversion of chlorine reservoir species (HCl and ClONO2) into Cl2, gradual conversion of Cl2 into Cl2O2, increase in HOCl in the winter period, increase in ClO when sunlight became available, and conversion of ClO into HCl were successfully reproduced. The HCl decrease in the winter polar vortex core continued to occur due to both transport of ClONO2 from the subpolar region to higher latitudes, providing a flux of ClONO2 from more sunlit latitudes into the polar vortex, and the heterogeneous reaction of HCl with HOCl. The temporal variation of chlorine species over Syowa Station was affected by both heterogeneous chemistries related to polar stratospheric cloud (PSC) occurrence inside the polar vortex and transport of a NOx-rich air mass from the polar vortex boundary region, which can produce additional ClONO2 by reaction of ClO with NO2. The deactivation pathways from active chlorine into reservoir species (HCl and/or ClONO2) were confirmed to be highly dependent on the availability of ambient O3. At 18 km, where most ozone was depleted, most ClO was converted to HCl. At 22 km where some O3 was available, an additional increase in ClONO2 from the prewinter value occurred, similar to the Arctic.

The on-board small vacuum gauge developed in this study is the quartz friction gauge, which is based on the principle that the resonance impedance of a quartz oscillator varies with the pressure of ambient gas. The gauge has a wide measuring range (105-10-2 Pa), which corresponds to the atmospheric pressure from the ground to an altitude of about 100 km. The sensor part and data processing part weigh 136 g and 210 g, respectively. In addition, the gauge can operate at a power consumption level of less than 1W. The gauge is suited for high altitude balloon experiments where the weight of on-board instruments must be kept to a minimum. The tuning-fork-shaped quartz oscillator in the gauge is widely used for wrist watches and has high resistance to vibration and shock, and thus the gauge is applicable to sounding rocket experiments that require on-board instruments with high resistance to the environment.

Pressure measurements in scientifi c balloon and sounding rocket experiments in the upper atmosphere are technologically and scientifi cally important. An onboard small pressure gauge developed in this study is the quartz friction gauge, which is based on the principle that the resonance impedance of a quartz oscillator varies with the pressure of ambient gas. The gauge has a wide measuring range (10^5 - 10^<-2> Pa), which corresponds to the atmospheric pressure from the ground to an altitude of about 100 km. The sensor part and data processing part weigh 100 g and 200 g, respectively. In addition, power consumption of less than 1 W is achieved with this gauge. The gauge is suited for high altitude balloon experiments because the weight of their instruments is severely limited. A tuningfork-shaped quartz oscillator in the gauge is widely used for wrist watches and the structure has a high resistance to vibration and shock, and thus the gauge is applicable to sounding rocket experiments that require onboard instruments to have high environment resistance. In this paper, we report on a performance demonstration test of the newly developed quartz friction gauge using the BU30-5 balloon experiment.

A balloon-borne superconducting submillimeter-wave limb-emission sounder (BSMILES) is powerful tool for observations of stratospheric minor constituents. The third flight experiment of BSMILES was conducted on September 4, 2006 to observe diurnal variation of HO_2. BSMILES carries an offset parabolic maim reflector with a diameter of 300mm, a 630 GHz-band SIS mixer cooled by liquid helium, an acousto-optical spectrometer, and 3-axes fiber-optic gyroscope. The gondola was lifted to an altitude of about 37.9km by a balloon of 200,000m3 in volume. The system operated properly and emission line spectra of O3 and minor constituents were measured. The system was retrieved from the sea after the observation.

We developed an optical ozone sonde on board a thin-film high-altitude balloon for an in situ measurement of the upper stratospheric ozone in 1993. Since then, observations using developed balloon-borne optical ozone sondes were performed at Sanriku Balloon Center every year until 1999. From 1994 to 1998,observations at Svalbard in the Arctic were also performed. The balloon-borne optical ozone sondes measure the intensity of solar radiation at ozone Hartley band absorption at every 30-40m in the vertical. Due to a smoothing procedure used for data analysis, the vertical resolution of obtained ozone profiles are limited to 1km. Before this balloon-borne optical ozone sonde technique was developed, there was no method to obtain a few kilometer scale ozone vertical distribution structure in the altitude range from 30 to 40km or above.

Momentum transport by atmospheric gravity waves (GWs) is one of the main uncertainties in the current climate models, especially in the Antarctic region where uncertainties are large. In order to obtain a three-dimensional picture of the momentum transport due to GWs, we proposed a super-pressure (SP) balloon observation of GWs over the Antarctic and developed its balloon and onboard instrument. A SP balloon with designated pressure resistance and gas permeability was successfully developed by covering the double-membrane SP balloon with a vectran net. In addition, an onboard instrument which measures horizontal wind velocity, air temperature, and pressure every 30 sec were manufactured. It has a weight less than 3 kg and is classified as a light balloon according to the regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organization. The first SP balloon observation in the Antarctic region will be performed by the 63rd Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition around January 2022.

We Tohoku Univ. have operated 40cm telescope at Mt. Haleakala of Maui Island by the cooperation with Univ. Hawaii. Utilizing its wide FOV and high dispersion spectroscopic capabilities, we investigated (1) the origin of the variations of Herman sodium atmosphere (with NASA/MESSENGER orbiter), (2) the effects of Io torus to Jovian magnetospheric activities (with JAXA/Hisaki EUV space telescope). We also investigated following targets by related telescope and satellites; (3) the search of escaping atmospheres of Venus and Mars (by Hisaki); (4) the study of velocity field and trace gas elements in the upper atmosphere of Venus (at Kitt Peak, Hida, and Haleakala), and (5) the search of crust origin gas (H2O/HDO, CH4) in the Martian atmosphere (at Manua Kea, Haleakala). Moreover, at the Haleakala observatory, (6) we moved 60cm telescope from Iitate, Fukushima (first light: fall 2014), and constructed the 2m telescope (first light: the end of 2016) under the collaboration with Univ. Hawaii.

    More details Close

We have newly developed a measuring system of column-averaged mixing ratio of carbon dioxide and methane with an optical spectrum analyzer operated in near infrared region. We made an evaluation of the instrumental parameters such as a resolution in wavelength and sensitivity, and have found that the estimated resolution was achieved to an expected value if we used an optical fiber with a slit at the edge. Next, we developed a program to retrieve a column-averaged mixing ratio from an observed spectrum. Simulation results showed that we can retrieve the mixing ratio within an accuracy of 1% from the spectrum whose signal-to-noise ratio is 500. We had made a comparison between the mixing ratio obtained with our system and a high-resolution FTIR system, and have found that fluctuation of the intensity obtained with our system was estimated to be about 3%, which is not achieved to the expected value. We will improve a mount mechanism of the fiber and slit system to resolve this problem.

The purpose of this research was the validation of our new instrument that can measure NO_2, OClO, and BrO with O_3. We prepared for the balloon experiment in 2010 but quitted due to the trouble of CPU in the instrument. We checked and improved the instrument in2011 and again prepared for the balloon experiment in 2012 but no balloon launched in this year due to the unusual meteorological condition. Therefore, test measurements were performed at ground on the sunrise and culmination. We confirmed that at least the stratospheric column of NO_2 can be derived.

Polar Stratospheric Cloud(PSC) plays essential role in polar ozone depletion and/or ozone hole. However, the characteristics of PSC, such as type, mixture, its role on ozone destruction, etc. have not yet understood well. In this study, we made comprehensive observations of PSC, ozone, and related minor constituents by ground-based spectrometers, lidar, sondes, and satellites to clarify characteristics of PSCs and its effect on ozone depletion quantitatively. We succeeded to capture the historical largest Arctic ozone hole which occurred in 2011 spring.

    米国NASAのガンマ線天文台衛星BATSE/CGROは、地球起源のガンマ線現象TGFs(Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes)を検出し、TGFとVLF/ELF帯の放電電波放射の同定に成功した。

In this research we have carried out optical and radio wave observations of lightning- induced TLEs (transient luminous events) in the middle and upper atmosphere, including sprites and elves, under international collaboration in order to clarify the generation mechanisms of TLEs and to understand their global effects both in electromagnetic and chemical point of view. 1. Sensor installation and steady observation in Scandinavia We visited ESRANGE observatory in Kiruna, Sweden in 15 FSY and carried out maintenance/ of CCD camera, installation of ELF and VLF receivers. In 16 and 17 FSY, we visited there again and carried out the maintenance and adjustments. The continuous data acquisition have been carried out up to now successfuly. 2. Extension and steady operation of world wide ELF network In addition to the ELF systems both at Syowa, Antarctica and Onagawa, Japan, we installed 2 more systems at Kiruna (FSY 15) and at Santa Cruz, California, USA (FSY 17). The system consisting of 4 stations is quite unique and the most useful network for lightning detection in estimating charge moment of lightning. 3. Optical measurements of TLEs by FORMOSAT-2/ISUAL and data analysis Taiwanese satellite FORMOSAT-2 was launched successfully on 20 May, FSY of 16. FORMOSAT-2 carries 3 sprites/lightning optical equipments and its health is in good condition since the start of observation. The analysis shows the first global distribution of TLEs (sprites, elves) and absolute electron energy in TLE for the first time. 4. Estimation of chemical effects of TLEs and lightning based on computer simulation We carried out the computer simulations to examine the physical mechanisms and to estimate the chemical effects on the ambient atmosphere. In addition, we visited University of Bremen, Germany and discussed about comparison between the chemical measurement with satellite and ELF network data.

In order to reconstruct variations of atmospheric CH_4, N_2O, CO_2 and O_2 concentrations, δ^<15>N of N_2, δ^<18>O of O_2, and air content for the last 130 Kyrs, we analyzed the North-GRIP deep ice core from Greenland using a wet air extraction technique. We also determined ice age and age differences between ice and occluded air based on the results of δ^<18>O of ice and an accumulation model. After correcting for a gravitational effect occurred due to molecular diffusion in firn, detailed temporal variations of all the abovementioned factors were deduced. Furthermore, we also discussed the similarity and differences between variation histories of all factors in north and south polar regions, by comparing the results obtained from the North-GRIP core and the Dome Fuji deep ice core, Antarctica. Especially interesting results derived in this study are that 1.the CH4 concentration was always higher in the north polar region in the south polar region, and those concentration differences depended on temperature, except for Holocene, 2.the CO_2 concentrations from the North-Grip core were apparently higher than those from the Dome Fuji core, suggestion that CO2 was newly produced by reacting with impurities during storage of air in ice in Greenland, 3.the N_2O concentrations from the North-Grip and Dome Fuji ice cores were fairly stable for Holocene, but quite variable in the glacial period, 4.the O2 concentrations from the North-Grip and Dome Fuji ice cores were extremely low, suggesting that the process of air occlusion into ice at the bottom of firn is very complex, and 5.that temporal variations of air content from both cores were similar to each other, but such variations are in conflict with our present knowledge, which may be related to incident solar radiation. By analyzing the temporal variations of CH4 concentration differences obtained from the North-Grip and Dome Fuji ice cores using a 3-box model consisting of northern and southern high latitudes and low latitude, we also succeeded in elucidating where was responsible for the north-south concentration differences over the glacial interglacial period.

In order to investigate the generation mechanisms of luminous events in the middle and upper atmosphere induced by lightning discharge and their relationship to the parental thunderstorm activity, some observation campaigns and continuous measurements have been carried out using a multipoint observation system composed of several optical instruments and VLF-ELF radio wave sensors. Detail analysis and computer simulations based on the observation data clarified following issues : (1) Thunderclouds producing sprites around Japan in wintertime are classified into 4 types and the apparent feature of sprites depends on the geographic location. (2) Cloud to ground discharge generating winter sprites in Japan occurs in the most active convective region of the thundercloud. (3) Considering the appearance of intermittent radio wave in VLF range just after sprite optical emissions, it is suggested that hybrid type discharge consisting of cloud-to-ground and intra-cloud discharges is relating to sprite generation. (4) Number of columns in a sprite event well correlates to the peak current of the parent lightning while the vertical length of column shows good correlation with charge moment of the cloud to ground lightning. (5) The average upper and bottom heights and the horizontal extent of sprite halo are 88 km, 73 km and 86 km, respectively. The estimated electron energy is 6 ?23 eV. (6) The average number of sprite evens for a day is estimated to be 720 based on the ELF measurements. (7) The lightning energy shows variation with a time period of 27.9 days, which may be caused by solar activity. (8) Sprites and sprite halo could be major sources of O(D) in the nighttime mesosphere.

A new optical observation system for planets with 60 cm telescope was installed in Iitate, Fukushima in 1999. The purpose of this study is to observe Venus atmosphere with the infrared spectrometers of this system. In 2000, the sensitivity of the InGaAs detector of the Fourier transform spectrometer (FT-IR) was checked using black body. The alignment of the acousto-optical spectrometer of the laser heterodyne spectrometer was adjusted to improve the wavenumber resolution. In 2001, FT-IR was set at Iitate and the spectra of the Venus between 0.9 and 1.7 μm were measured as a test observation. A new InSb detector for longer wavelength than 2 μm were installed to the FT-IR. In 2002, Venus atmosphere was observed with InGaAs detector of FT-IR on 8 days from September 2002 to January 2003. O_2 emission of Venus atmosphere at 1.27 μm were detected on November 29, December 11, 14, and 28. Jupiter spectrum were measured on December 7 and CH_4 absorption of Jupiter atmosphere were detected. Venus spectrum were also measured with InSb detector but there was strong thermal emission of the instruments at wavelength longer than 4μm. This thermal emission should be reduced with optical filter or some other methods.

Measurements of HF, HCl, ClONO2, HNO3, and O3 were made using the Ground-based FTIR instruments at Rikubetsu and Moshiri observatories on the island of Hokkaido, Japan, and at Kiruna Sweden since 1995. All these species observed in Japan show marked seasonal variations. Namely the column amounts are minimum in July-September and reach maximum values in February-April. These species are produced through photolysis of long lived trace species. The increases of the abundance of these species from fall to spring are basically due to poleward transport by planetary waves. In addition to the general increase of the column abundances in winter and spring, the variability is larger in these seasons. Based on the potential vorticity (PV) analysis, air mass in the polar vortex was occasionally transported to over the north part of Japan between February and April. On these cases, a decrease in the HCl/HF ratio and an increase in the ClONO2/HF ratio were observed. These results were consistent with those calculated using the three-dimensional chemistry and transport model (CTM) in which heterogeneous reactions on polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) were included The observed day to day variation of O3 between January and April was generally in good agreement with that calculated using the CTM which included the heterogeneous reactions on PSCs. These CTM calculated O3 amounts were lower than those calculated without the heterogeneous reactions by 2 % at the end of March. When air mass in the polar vortex was transported to over Rikubetsu the difference was as large as 6 %. These results suggest the size of influence from the transport of air from the Arctic that was responsible for the ozone decrease observed at midlatitudes.

In 1990 a discharge phenomenon from the stratosphere to the ionosphere was found during the tcst observation of a low-light TV camera employed by University of Minnesota. Since this discovery a lot of observations from ground, aircraft and space shuttle have been carried out. It is found that these kinds of optical emissions in the stratosphere, mesosphere and lower ionosphere, now called sprites and elves, are induced by an intense cloud to ground discharge and that the phenomena are accompanied by strong radio and gamma ray emissions. Optical emissions of sprites and elves are considered to be caused by an excitation via collision processes between atmospheric molecules/atoms and electrons that are energized by quasi-static electric field or electromagnetic impulse generated by a cloud to ground discharge. We estimated the electron energies based on the spectral observations with high-speed photometers. It is found that electron temperature has a peak of 3-25 eV for carrot-like sprites and 2-14 eV for column type sprites at the onset of the optical emission. In a body of carrot-like sprites the electron temperature tends to increase as altitude decreases with a local peak of 12-20 eV at an altitude of 〜80 km that corresponds to gap between hair and head region of sprites. On the other hand, it is confirmed that elves are caused by a negative cloud to ground discharge as well as a positive one. Electron energy of elves was found to reach up to 40 eV, which implies a strong ionization in the lower ionosphere. We conducted optical observation in Japan and showed the occurrences of sprites and elves in winter for the first time in the world. We also analyzed the "sprite halo" which appears as a diffuse fashion with a disk-like shape and revealed its time-space structure of luminous intensity and electron temperature.

Many PSC events were observed by the lidar observations at Ny-Aalesund, Svalbard (79゜N, 12゜W). The sandwich structure found in the vertical profile of PSC, which was frequently observed when the stratospheric temperature was lowered near the frost point, is very characteristic. The enhancement of PSC was observed when stratospheric temperature decreased near the frost point. The peak value of the backscattering ratio of the PSC is 5 to 8, and the depolarization ratio is near zero. The peaks of depolarization were found at the top and bottom sides of the PSC scattering layer. In other words, a liquid layer of PSC was between the solid layer (sandwich). The backscattering did not enhance at the depolarization peaks. The scattering and depolarization are inversely correlated in the sandwich structure for the vertical direction. This inverse correlation was observed not only in the sandwich structure, but also in the almost all the PSC events. There was few events when the scattering and depolarization were increased simultaneously. The numerical simulations of the lidar observations show some important suggestions for the microphysical processes of PSC. The simulations indicate that the parts of the characteristics of PSC can be explained by the ternary solution of H2SO4/HNO3/H2O. The observations were well simulated only when the number concentration of solid particles are between 10ィイD1-3ィエD1 and 10ィイD1-2ィエD1 /cc.

We installed the Tunable Diode Laser Heterodyne Spectrometer (TDLHS) at Moshiri Observatory, Nagoya University in October, 1996. Measurement of Solar infrared spectra using TDLHS and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR) were made for two weeks simultaneously. Absorption spectra of several trace molecules such as O3, N2O,HCl, HF,and HNO<@D23@>D2 were taken. Also ozonesonde measurements were conducted at Moshiri Observatory. Vertical profiles of volume mixing ratios (VMRs) of O3 were retrieved from these high-resolution solar spectra. The VMR profile retrieval is based on an iterative inversion algorithm, which utilizes line-by-line, layr-by-layr calculations. Eighty ozone vertical profiles were retrieved from the two spectral regions from 40 spectra and were compared with 17 ozonesonde measurements from a nearby station. Average differences between 18 and 34 km were less than (]SY.+-。[) 12%. The standard deviation of the average differences between 18 and 34 km were less than 20%. Effects of several different factors on errors of profile retrievals, such as initial guess, temperature profiles, and instrument line shape functions, were evaluated by numerical simulation. The estimated errors were extremely consistent with the observed errors between 18 and 34 km, suggesting that the FTIR was optically well adjusted. In general, it was found that retrieval of the O3 profile gives VMRs in an accuracy better than 40% at 14 km, improving to 10-15% between 18 and 30 km, with precision of 30% and 20% for these altitude ranges, respectively.
