Since 2000, the Department of Quantum Science and Energy Engineering, Tohoku University, has academically supported the establishment of a nuclear science research facility in Aomori Prefecture. The facility contains multipurpose accelerators useful in various fields. After much effort, the Aomori Prefecture Quantum Science Centre was established in Rokkasho Village, Aomori Prefecture, in 2017. At this facility, positron emission tomography, basic research concerning Boron Neutron-Capture Therapy (BNCT), non-destructive neutron testing, and particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis are conducted using a 20[Formula: see text]MeV cyclotron. The sensitivity of PIXE analysis is less than 1 ppm although the proton energy is 20[Formula: see text]MeV. We developed a method that stably supplies a beam of very weak intensity, rendering PIXE analysis possible. Currently, the facility is used by universities and research institutes in Aomori Prefecture, as well as agriculture departments, fisheries departments, and commercial companies. PIXE is used to analyze trace elements in various samples. When a metal serves as the target, characteristic X-rays are generated at high intensity and can serve as a monochromatic X-ray source. We obtained X-ray transmission images of the resin electrical board using the Ta K–X-rays as a point source, demonstrating very good contrast. We are thus currently promoting the use of monochromatic X-ray images.

We investigated the spatial distributions of alkaline earth elements (Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba) in tea leaves using micro-particle-induced X-ray emission (micro-PIXE) analysis to determine the elements’ concentrations and translocations. We examined samples of tea [Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze] leaves that had taken up Ba and Sr via foliar absorption, while Mg and Ca had been absorbed through the roots as usual. We observed that Ca, Sr and Ba accumulation was similarly localized while Mg was distributed throughout the leaves, suggesting variation in the accumulation properties of alkaline earth elements in tea plants.

In this study, a gamma-ray detector probe with a thallium bromide (TlBr) semiconductor detector was developed for particle-induced gamma-ray emission (PIGE) analysis. Owing to the high atomic numbers of thallium (81) and bromine (35) and high density (7.56[Formula: see text]g/cm3) of TlBr, it exhibits a high photon stopping power, making it promising for PIGE analysis. An approximately 5-mm thick TlBr detector was fabricated from a crystal grown through the traveling-molten zone method using a zone-purified material. The detector comprised a planar cathode and small anode ([Formula: see text][Formula: see text]mm) surrounded by a guard electrode. The detector obtained full-width-at half-maximum (FWHM) energy resolutions of 1.7 and 1.6% for 356- and 511-keV gamma rays, respectively, at room temperature using a depth correction and rejection method based on the cathode-to-anode signal ratio. The TlBr detector probe was installed in a beamline at the Aomori Prefecture Quantum Science Center, Japan, where PIGE analysis was conducted using a 20-MeV proton beam. Gamma rays at 478[Formula: see text]keV from 7Li(p,p[Formula: see text])7Li reactions, 197 and 110[Formula: see text]keV from [Formula: see text]F(p,p[Formula: see text])[Formula: see text]F reactions, and 718[Formula: see text]keV from [Formula: see text]B(p,p[Formula: see text])[Formula: see text]B reactions were successfully detected using the proposed TlBr detector probe in PIGE analysis.

We collected seven types of green vegetables produced in 11 areas of Japan and analyzed their elemental concentrations. Halogen analyses were performed with and without prior chemical treatment. The most popular type of spinach exhibited the highest concentrations of Mg, K, and Zn, and the lowest concentrations of alkaline earths (Ca and Sr) and halogens (Cl and Br). Japanese mustard spinach, the second most consumed type of spinach in Japan, exhibited the highest concentrations of P, S, Ca, Fe, and Br and adequate amounts of other essential elements. The other five green vegetables had unique elemental concentrations. In particular, radish had the highest concentrations of Ca, Na, and Cl and the lowest concentrations of Mg, P, Cu, and Zn. Leaves and stalks were separately analyzed. Fe, Cu, Zn, and Mn concentrations tended to be higher in leaves, and K, Na, and Rb concentrations were higher in stalks. Halogen (Cl and Br) concentrations in Japanese mustard spinach produced on farmland near the coast were remarkably high, suggesting an effect of sea salt. However, even in green vegetables produced near the coast, halogen uptake clearly differed by production area. The concentrations of Cl and Br in Japanese mustard spinach produced in two coastal areas were very high and were not removed by washing, but were mostly lost after boiling samples from Taneichi for 3[Formula: see text]min. In contrast, there was no difference in Na concentrations among vegetables produced in coastal and inland areas. The concentrations of essential elements such as Mg, Ca, and Fe were clearly higher in green vegetables from small- versus large-scale production areas, perhaps attributable to differences in the farming methods employed.

Although green vegetables are valuable sources of essential elements, and are safe in that they lack harmful elements, they are high in oxalic acid, increasing the risk of urolithiasis. We performed elemental analyses on spinach (Spinacia oleracea L), Malabar nightshade (Basella alba), and water Morning Glory (Ipomoea aquatica), which contain large amounts of oxalic acid, and compared the data to those of Japanese mustard spinach (Brassica rapa var. perviridis), which is the second most commonly consumed green vegetable (after spinach) in Japan. We focused on concentrations of Ca, Mg, and Sr that suppress the formation of ureteral stones (calculi). The calcium concentration in spinach was [Formula: see text]g/g in leaves and [Formula: see text]g/g in stalks, and the level in Japanese mustard spinach were [Formula: see text]g/g in leaves and [Formula: see text]g/g in stalks. The overall Sr concentration in Japanese mustard spinach was thus 10-fold higher than in spinach, but the Mg concentration was lower than that in spinach. The concentrations of Ca and Sr in Malabar nightshade and water Morning Glory were 3- to 5-fold higher than in spinach. As the former vegetables are consumed much less often than spinach, the risk of urolithiasis is low. We explored how the concentrations of these elements changed after boiling.

Abstract Proton therapy experiments in small animals are useful not only for pre-clinical and translational studies, but also for the development of advanced technologies for high-precision proton therapy. Accuracy of small animal treatment plans is as important as in clinical treatment plans to ensure precise delivery of the proton dose. While treatment planning for proton therapy is currently based on the stopping power of protons relative to water (i.e., the relative stopping power [RSP]), estimated by converting Hounsfield units (HU) into RSP (HU-RSP conversion) in reconstructed X-ray computed tomography (XCT) images, the HU-RSP conversion causes uncertainties in RSP, which affect the accuracy of dose simulation in patients. Proton computed tomography (pCT) has attracted a great deal of attention due to its potential to reduce RSP uncertainties in clinical treatment planning, and is additionally expected to provide improved accuracy during small animal treatment planning. However, as the proton energies for irradiating small animals are much lower than those used clinically, the energy dependence of RSP may negatively affect pCT-based RSP evaluation.
We evaluated the RSPs of 10 water- and tissue-equivalent materials with known constituent elements based on pCT measurements conducted at 73.65 MeV, and compared them with XCT-based and calculated RSPs to investigate energy dependence and achieve more accurate RSPs for treatment planning in small animals. The results demonstrated that despite the low proton energy, with the pCT approach for RSP evaluation smaller root mean square deviation (1.9%) of RSP from the theoretical prediction is still achieved compared to conventional HU-RSP conversion with XCT (6.1%), which is expected to improve the accuracy of proton therapy treatment planning in pre-clinical studies of small animals.

In this paper, we measured more than 4200 beard samples collected from a single person every day over a 12-year period and analyzed them based on a standard-free method. It was found that the sulfur concentration remained almost constant from a long-term perspective but showed small periodic elevations. Silicone, phosphorus and rubidium showed significant periodic changes with a cycle of several years. While manganese, strontium and molybdenum seemed to show long-term changes, there were no significant differences due to their large standard deviations. Concerning seasonal changes, silicone and phosphorus showed decreasing trends in summer, albeit without significant differences. The bromine concentration showed clear seasonal variations, rising in winter and falling in summer, suggesting the possible influence of seasonal changes in the elemental components in the airborne particles that pass over to Japan from the Asian Continent. These findings confirmed that beard analyses are useful not only for evaluating changes in trace element concentrations in the human body but also for clarifying the main pathways of the intake of these elements.

A thallium bromide (TlBr) gamma-ray detector was developed for particle-induced gamma-ray emission (PIGE) applications. The PIGE spectrum of a lithium fluoride (LiF) crystal was obtained for the first time using the TlBr detector. This detector was fabricated using a zone-purified crystal with dimensions of approximately 2mm × 2mm × 5mm. An energy resolution of 2.3% full-width at half maximum for 511 keV gamma rays was obtained from the detector at room temperature. The LiF crystal target was irradiated with a 20 MeV proton beam at the Aomori Prefecture Quantum Science Center. Full-energy peaks of 478 keV and 197 keV were successfully detected from lithium and fluorine, respectively, using the TlBr detector in the PIGE experiment.

We evaluated the spatial distributions of cesium and strontium in tea leaves using micro particle-induced X-ray emission (micro-PIXE) analysis to explore the characteristics of the concentrations and translocations of these elements in tea leaves, and the similarities and differences between cesium and potassium and between strontium and calcium. We examined samples of tea [Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze] leaves that took up cesium and strontium via foliar absorption. We confirmed that calcium and strontium accumulated in many narrow areas of the leaves, while cesium and potassium were distributed throughout the leaf samples. Almost all of the strontium and calcium accumulated in the same narrow locations in the leaf samples 30 days after foliar absorption.

We developed a 20[Formula: see text]MeV particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis method using a medical cyclotron, which is conventionally used for positron emission tomography analysis performed in vacuo, during which the target sample is damaged. For non-destructive analysis and ease of switching between target samples, we developed a technique allowing 20[Formula: see text]MeV proton PIXE analysis to be performed at the atmospheric pressure. We filled the PIXE analysis chamber with helium and checked that the continuous background of the Compton tails of nuclear reaction [Formula: see text]-rays increased only minimally, and that the quasi-free electron bremsstrahlung (QFEB) did not increase at all, in the X-ray energy spectrum.

We explored whether medical positron emission tomography (PET) cyclotron proton beams could be used for proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis. The beam current of the medical PET cyclotron is high, as required for radioisotope production, and is not commonly used for PIXE analysis. We successfully extracted stable proton beams of low intensity by using the ion source of a medical cyclotron to exploit proton impurities in deuteron gas. We performed 20-MeV PIXE analysis of a biological sample (used tea leaves). Elements lighter than Sr could be detected with high sensitivity ([Formula: see text]14 ppm) using a silicon drift detector. We thus showed that a medical cyclotron widely used for PET diagnosis could be employed for PIXE analysis of biological samples.

We succeeded in observation of ferrokinetics in a plant (20 days radish) using the micron RI imaging which was previously developed in our laboratory, by improving two criteria: (i) adjustment of the iron solution for the plant’s intake; and (ii) measurement of the radioisotope, 55Fe in the course to take up solution in the plant. The accumulation of iron atoms in the plant was confirmed by the micro-PIXE and an appropriate density of iron was determined. Under an optimal condition of iron solution containing 55Fe, the ferrokinetics in the plant was investigated by use of the micron RI imaging system.

The amount of contaminated soil with radioactive cesium (Cs) is more than 22 million cubic meters as a result of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident. In order to save the cost for keeping the soil covered, it is necessary to reduce its volume. To seek methods of efficient volume reduction, we investigated the cross-sections of contaminated soil particles using autoradiography (ARG), SEM, particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis. The results of ARG showed that the radioactive Cs atoms were distributed on the surface of contaminated soil particle. PIXE analysis showed that K, Fe and Ti were distributed also on the surface of contaminated soil particle. Therefore, it is considered that the radioactive Cs contamination correlated with the distribution of K, Fe, and Ti. Moreover, the result suggests that it is possible to reduce the volume of contaminated soil by peeling off the radioactive Cs contaminated surface of soil.

A lot of radiocesium had been deposited onto pastures and grasslands following Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident. More radiocesium was accumulated in root-mat horizon than in both above ground plant bodies and mineral soils. In this study, factors causing higher radiocesium concentrations in root-mat horizon were evaluated by the addition of stable cesium solution and particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis. Results suggest that adsorption onto root surfaces played a significant role in Cs accumulation in root-mat horizon. Furthermore, absorption of Cs was key to its long-term preservation. The adsorption of Cs by clay minerals also contributed to its retention. A slow water infiltration rate may also affect the enrichment of radiocesium in root-mat horizon. Based on these results, it is concluded that both biotic and abiotic factors contributed to the effective retention of radiocesium in root-mat horizons following the FDNPP accident.

We developed an X-ray pinhole camera using a radio-isotope source that emits only X-rays.We investigated the performance of this system using a 55Fe source with phantom samples. We then applied it to investigate the movement of a 55Fe tracer in Japanese mustard spinach. We obtained X-ray images of the 55Fe tracer in the spinach samples, and found that 55Fe accumulated in the plant.

The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident caused radioactive pollution by 131I, 134Cs and 137Cs. The surface of the ground was contaminated at a volume of 3 × 107 m3. The government has mandated that the top 5 cm of the contaminated soil be removed and stored, in this way, it is desirable to reduce its volume. Soil samples were collected from a mountain, a rice field and a vegetable field in northern Japan, and the silt was extracted from the muddy water by washing the soil. Next, the silt was sprayed with a solution of cesium carbonate (Cs2CO3). We determined the amounts of Al, Si, K and Cs in the silt particles using micro-particle-induced X-ray emission (micro-PIXE) analysis. The silt particles from a vegetable field, a rice field and a mountain were mainly formed from smectite or vermiculite, which absorbs Cs atoms. The measurements at multiple detection angles confirmed that Cs atoms were uniformly absorbed within silt particles less than [Formula: see text] in diameter. This resulted that the radioactive Cs atoms were adsorbed in silt particles within [Formula: see text] of the surface.

The aim of this study was to develop combined treatments between proton therapy and chemotherapy using a vascular targeting agent or an anti-cancer drug which not only kill radio-resistant hypoxia tumor cells effectively but also reduce side effects. In order to perform the therapeutic experiments using tumor-bearing mice, a proton irradiation system was developed at Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center, Tohoku University. We used the novel vascular disrupting agent AVE8062 as a vascular targeting agent. The results of the experiments showed that the proton therapy combined with AVE8062 inhibited tumor growth significantly in comparison to their monotherapies.

    More details Close

The purpose of this study was to develop radiation sensitive drug delivery system (DDS), and to increase the efficacy of proton therapy by combining proton irradiation with the DDS. We developed a liposome containing cisplatin as a DDS. Radiation sensitivity was added to the DDS by using ascorbic acid or gold nanoparticles. We performed experiments of proton or X-ray irradiation to the liposomes, and confirmed that the amount of release of cisplatin increased up to about 30% for the radiosensitive liposome compared to that for the non-irradiated control. In addition, cell irradiation experiments using the liposomes and proton beams showed enhancement of cell death effects compared to that of proton irradiation alone.

One of the most important problems in nuclear fuel cycle is to minimize amount and to reduce radiotoxicity of high-level liquid waste generated from spent fuel reprocessing. In this study, to solve these problems, we focus on nuclide separation by column chromatography method and development of novel macroporous silica-based adsorbents having high selectivity for each nuclide such as Cs, Sr, platinum group metals (PGMs) and minor actinide (MA), which are included in high-level liquid waste generated from spent fuel reprocessing. Moreover, column chromatography method separates thses heat-generating nuclides, and the new process can be used for internal irradiation therapy of cancer.

The aim of this study was to develop the drug delivery system (DDS) with radiosensitivity for cancer treatment. We have planned to combine the radiosensitive DDS and proton irradiation for chemoradiation therapy with a proton which are expected to provide large therapeutic effects with fewer side effects. The radioactive DDS was developed mainly using alginate sodium and hyaluronic acid. In addition, ascorbic acid was added to effectively fracture the DDS particles. The DDS particles were irradiated with an 80-MeV proton beam with a 15-mm spread-out Bragg peak at a dose of 5 or 15 Gy. As a result, the amount of release of the cancer drug for the irradiated DDS increased by 20~30% compared to that for unirradiated DDS, and we have confirmed that the DDS developed in this study has successfully obtained the radiosensitivity at the clinical dose in proton therapy.

We developed 3D imaging system by combining micro-PIXE and a X-ray detector with a wave guide. Because only the X-rays which are generated from the plane that is parallel to a wave guide are detected by the system, the beam position has the information of the depth. Therefore three dimensional elemental distribution could be obtained by combining the sample movement. The depth resolution is estimated around 60um. Since the X-rays from deep position of the sample are absorbed, this method could not apply thick sample. This method will be effective for the analysis of the sample that has gaps and holes.

We performed therapeutic experiments using tumor-bearing mice to develop proton therapy combined with chemotherapy using cisplatin incorporated polymeric micelles (CDDP). The experimental results showed that the combined-treatment increased the tumor growth delay additively compared to proton therapy alone or chemotherapy with CDDP alone. The concentrations of CDDP in the samples of the tumor and normal tissues were evaluated using particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis. We found that the concentration of CDDP in the tumor tissue was much higher than that in the normal tissue. Judging from the results of the therapeutic experiments and the PIXE analysis, it is suggested that CDDP was selectively delivered to the tumor tissue by the tumor blood flow, and that proton therapy combined with chemotherapy with CDDP induced the significant tumor growth delay with lower side-effects.

We performed therapeutic experiments using a murine solid tumor to develop a novel cancer treatment technique for proton therapy combined with a vascular disrupting agent AVE8062. In order to precisely irradiate the tumor with a proton beam, a novel beam monitor based on a micro-pattern gaseous detector was successfully developed and used in the experiments. Treatment effects on tumor growth were evaluated from high spatial resolution PET using [18F]Fluoro-Deoxy-Glucose and [18F]Fluoromisonidazole, and from the tumor-growth-delay measurements. The results show that the single combined-treatment caused extensive necrosis in the inner region of the tumor as well as an additive effect on tumor growth delay. However, tumor cells including hypoxic cells in the tumor periphery survived the single treatment. Therefore, it is suggested that the second proton irradiation combined with AVE8062 is needed to completely kill the tumor cells in the peripheral region of the tumor.

Metallic elements such as iron and zinc play an important role in the growth and life activity of plants. It is expected that the in-vivo observation of these metallic elements in plants enables to elucidate their metabolism mechanism at a molecular level and it becomes useful for the selective breeding and the artificial cultivation. We developed a 3D RI imaging system based on the use of RI source emitting only x-rays (X-ray RI source) and the principle of a pinhole camera. We succeeded to perform 3D RI imaging by using a 55Fe source as the X-ray RI source. We applied it to investigate the movement of 55Fe tracer in a sprout of Japanese mustard spinach. We obtained the time change of distribution of 55Fe tracer in the plant and found that the 55Fe accumulation in leaf became remarkable after a period of time after administration of 55Fe.

Therapeutic experiments were performed using a murine solid tumor to develop a novel combined-treatment between proton therapy and cisplatin. The results showed that the proton therapy combined with cisplatin inhibited tumor growth significantly in comparison to their monotherapies. Elemental analysis of the tumor treated with cisplatin-incorporated polymeric micelles (CDDP-micells) was performed to evaluate both concentration of the drug in the tumor tissue using the conventional PIXE analysis and its spatial distribution in the tumor using the submilli-PIXE analysis. The results showed higher drug concentration for the tumor treated with (CDDP-micells) compared to cisplatin whereas no significant difference in the concentration between CDDP-micells and cisplatin was observed for the normal tissue. This finding suggests that CDDP-micells not only provide superior therapeutic efficacy but also reduce side effects caused by conventional cisplatin when combined with proton therapy.

Antitumor effects of the proton therapy in combination with the combretastatin A-4 derivative, AVE8062 were studied by using NFSa fibrosarooma implanted into the hind legs of C3H/He mice in order to investigate the minimally invasive treatment technique in proton therapy with antivassular effects. The proton therapy facilities for small animals were developed to perform the treatment experiments on the tumor mouse model at Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center (CYRIC), Tohoku University. In addition, proton-irradiation experiments with a dog tumor cell of squamous cell carcinoma were performed to derive the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of a therapeutic 80-MeV proton beam compared to a gamma ray of ^<6O>Co. The RBE of the 80 MeV proton was 1.4-1.6 at the Bragg peak, 1.1 at the spread-out Bragg peak. The time course of a tumor growth was measured after a single irradiation of the proton beam and/or a single intraperitoneal administration of AVE8062. The proton irradiation provided large antitumor effects such as a tumor volume reduction and a tumor growth delay (TGD) depending on the proton absorbed dose ( 15 or 30 Gy ), while there were not significant differences in TGD between the AVE8062 administration groups ( 5 or 10 mg/kg) and an unirradiated control. The proton irradiation in combination with the AVE8062 administration resulted in the almost same TGD as the monotherapy of proton irradiation. The present results suggest that it is important to optimize the protocol for the combined treatment to provide a larger antitumor effect compared to the monotherapy.

In order to study the spin-dependence of three-nucleon interaction via elastic scatterings of spin-polarized neutron off deuteron, we have developed a highly intense but inexpensive spin-polarized proton source. In this proposal, an atomic beam of polarized hydrogen is produced by exchanging spins with Rubidium vapor, which is polarized with optical pumping by a circularly polarized laser, and then ionized by an ECR ionizer. In the first year of the term, mainly the polarized Rubidium vapor generating system has been developed It is crucial to match the spectral widths between the high-intensity laser and the absorption of Rubidium vapor so that the laser power is efficiently absorbed and accordingly a high polarization and a high vapor pressure can be achieved at the same time. Although high-intensity semiconductor lasers are available at low prices in this spectral region, their widths are usually of order of 1 THz, which is thousand times broader than the Doppler width of 1 GHz, resulting in very poor absorption efficiency. Conventionally very expensive Ti-Sapphire lasers are used for this purpose, employing optical modulators to broaden their extremely narrow widths. Although semiconductor lasers with external cavities are commercially available, they have 1 MHz super-narrow widths and a few mW small powers, as they are usually focused to spectroscopic use. Thus we have developed a laser system suitable for optical pumping, with a broader width of 100 MHz and a high power of 1 W, by employing a Fabry-Perot type external cavity instead of the ordinary grating type. A feedback system for stabilizing the wavelength in a long term and an atomic beam system has been developed in parallel. In the second year of the term, the superconducting ECR ion source started operation and various improVements have been made, e.g., in the beam extraction part and in the beam transport system, by using heavy noble gases. Although the acceleration of polarized ion beam has not been achieved in the term, the system will be completed in the near future, together with the development of polarimeters. Also closer collaboration with theoreticians has been promoted by holding several workshops.

Two-nucleon motions in nuclei are partially dominated by two and three body interactions in nuclear force. Although these interactions have been introduced to explain various phenomenons in nuclei, the clear pieces of evidence have not been shown yet, especially three body interaction. The aim of the study is the investigation of the role of two nucleon interaction in Triton with ^2H(n, np)n and ^2H(n,γ)^3H reaction, in order to separate the effect of three body force. We carried out the experiment using neutron beams produced by the ^7Li(p, n)^7Be reaction. The proton beams in an energy range from 40 to 90 MeV are provided from the Cyclotron laboratory, Tohoku University. The average neutron intensity was about 1 MHz that is hundred times lower than that of required. We used an active deuteron target which is made of the three layered deuterized liquid scintillator. The recoils or emitted protons in the final state produce the trigger signals in the active target. The r-rays and neutrons from the final state of the n+^2H process are detected GSO Crystals and NE213 scintillation detectors, respectively. They are measured in coincidence with the signals from the active target. The online data acquisition system based on the VME+PC/LINUX, which were developed in this project, was employed to take data. The preliminary data were obtained to discuss the development to the next stage for this experiment. We found that much intense mono-energetic neutron beams are required to carry out the ^2H(n,γ)^3H measurements to discuss two nucleon motions in nuclei.

The experiment was performed at the Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center, Tohoku University, with a 70-MeV proton beam from the K=110MeV AVF-cyclotron and the new beam swinger system^<6)>. The details of the experimental setup have been described Ref.6. Neutron energies were measured by the time-of-flight technique (TOF), where neutrons were detected by a detector array consisting of 16peaces of the disk type detector located at 44.3 m from the target. The detectors were filled with 25.1-liter organic liquid scintillator BC501A in the total sensitive volume. The absolute efficiencies of the detectors were obtained from the ^7Li(p,n) ^7Be activation analyses with an error less than ± 6%. Errors in the absolute magnitude of (p,n) cross sections were estimated to be less than 12%. The target was a metallic foil of ^6Li isotopes with enrichments better than 95%. The experimental study for the ^6Li(p,n)^6Be reaction has carried out at E_p=50^- 80 MeV region. Differential cross sections of neutrons leading to the five states in the residual nucleus were measured. Results have been compared with the large-space shell-model prediction based on DW theory. The newly observed low-lying state at E_x= 3MeV has been tentatively assigned to be 2^+, T=1 one. Two broad bump observed at E_x= 15 and 25MeV were discussed as 1^- and 2^- components of the ΔL=1 giant resonance. Experimental study of the ^<12>C(p,n)^<12>N reaction have been carried out at E_p= 70 MeV with better resolution than those so far reported. Results were compared successfully with the predictions based on large-space shell-model and DW calculations where Franey and Love 100MeV effective interactions were applied. Spin-parity assignments for observed seven transition were consistent with previous report. The ^<42>Ca(p,n)^<42>Sc reaction at E_p = 50, 70 and 80 MeV were observed by the high resolution TOF technique. The shell model calculation and analyses with DWBA theory have provided a set of spin-parity assignment over 7, 8 and 10 levels for ^<42,44>Sc, and ^<48>Sc nuclei, respectively. The GT matrix elements B(GT) were obtainded from the LAS and the GT cross sections. The energy dependence of the ratio of isovector effective interaction strengths |J_<στ>/J_τ| was obtained for the (p,n) reaction on a medium mass nucleus in an energy range between 50 and 80 MeV.

Studies of the decay property for giant resonances following charge-exchange reactions limited to a few cases, especially for the (p, n) reaction, no reliable data has been reported due to experimental difficulties encountered with measuring neutrons and decay protons with a sufficient efficiency, and with reasonable resolution. In this report, we describe the newly equipped coincidence measurement system with the (p, np) reaction for further investigation of microscopic decay properties of highly excited states such as isobaric analog state. The experiment was performed using a 35 MeV momentum-analyzed proton beams obtained from the AVF cyclotron at CYRIC,Tohoku University. Decay protons were detected in coincidence with neutrons using a SSD-telescope of Si surface-barrier type mounted at the length of 8 cm from the target, and at rhetap=135 degree relative to the beam direction. The SSD-telescope consisted of DELTAE (250mum thick), E (1000mum thick) and veto counters with a 100 mm_2 active surface area. The veto detector was used to reject energetic protons scattered at backward angles. The solid angle for the proton detection was 15.6 msr. Direct measurement of the proton decay from the IAS in <@D1208@>D1Bi was performed by means of the neutron-proton coincidence experiment through the (p, n) reaction at 35 MeV.The branching ratio for the proton decay of the IAS has been determined to be (57(]SY.+-。[)21)%, which is in consistent with the previous results within the statistical error. Further measurements have been carried out for the (p, np) reactions on <@D1140@>D1Ce and <@D1174@>D1Yb. The branching ratio for the proton decay of the IAS has been determined to be (23(]SY.+-。[)3)% for the former case, while it is (35(]SY.+-。[)8)% for the latter. These data are expected to provide significant information for the isospin mixing in nuclei.
