I specialize in special needs education, particularly in the field of hearing impairment. My main research interest is building better relationships, and I conduct studies that contribute to this goal.
Communication is essential for building relationships between people. However, for individuals with hearing impairments, accessing spoken information is often difficult, and this has been reported to hinder communication and relationship building with others.
So far, I have focused on relationships between teachers with hearing impairments and hearing teachers working at schools for the deaf. Through both qualitative and quantitative analyses, I have examined how inclusive workplace environments can be created where both groups of teachers can work together effectively. Recently, I have been engaged in research aimed at fostering better relationships in higher education institutions—among researchers, among faculty and staff, and between faculty and students.
In addition, I myself have a severe hearing impairment. In my daily life, I communicate by combining multiple methods, such as sign language, written text, speech recognition, and text-to-speech technology. Insights gained from these experiences have led me to research in educational technology, particularly on the use of text-to-speech systems.
