The spread of letterpress and other Western-style printing technologies throughout Japanese society during the Meiji period (1868-1912) is often thought to be the cause of the rapid decline in traditional printing technologies that had existed since the Edo period (1603-1868). However, in the case of highly specialized books like Buddhist volumes, well-established publishing companies that had existed since the Edo period had an enthusiastic readership firmly in their grip. Insofar as these companies adopted the strategy of only publishing the minimum number of books they could sell, there was no need for them to rush to introduce letterpress printing or master mass-quantity or high-speed printing technologies. Yet, Buddhist publishing companies in Tokyo quickly introduced Western-style printing technologies from the late 1880s to late 1890s, as Meiji Enlightenment-era intellectuals had themselves formed publishing companies in an attempt to widely share Buddhist doctrines with the general public. Conversely, Kyoto Buddhist publishing companies persisted in using woodblock printing and Japanese-style book-binding, as they needed to sell commentaries on Buddhist scriptures and the like to priests engaging in religious training. However, as the western style grew more prevalent, Kyoto Buddhist companies began to recognize the convenience of smaller, letterpress-printed, Western-bound books. Thus, the turn of the nineteenth century marked the beginning of the decline of Japan's traditional printing technologies.

Most traditions of Japanese temples disagree with the historical fact. Therefore historians have not dealt with them as proper materials. Indeed, traditions include the false part. But it was also true that people in Edo period accepted them as the historical fact. Why was doubtful traditions easily believed. In this article, I take up the legend of Honen talked in a small island and try to resolve the above question.

In recent years, the study of Shinto神道priests on the local level has progressed under the historical concept of "social status periphery".Using this concept, historians of the Tokugawa Period have shown a relative instability in the status of Shinto priests in conparison to Buddhist monks, who played the predominate religios role during the period. In an attempt to further clarify such a line of argument, the present paper looks into the organization of Shinto priests in the province of Aki, a region overwhelmingly dominated by the Buddhist Shin Pure Land Sect. For Shinto priests on the social status periphery, one way of escaping such social instability was to organize under the patroage of such influential families as the Yoshidas吉田 and thus ensure their social position. However, intervention by the Yoshida family in the affairs of local Shinto priests was by no means always welcome. On the occasion of the dispatch of agents to adron the shrines of Hiroshima Feud with heihaku幣帛 symbols of worship, the Yoshida family took the opportunity to install purification deputies(注連没頭)in each district for the purpose of registering local Shinto priests. However, such a policy was ineffective due to a lack of organization among the priests in the region.A similar opportunity was presented in 1804 for the Yoshida family to intervene, designed to influence the region for a long time to come. This took advantage of the holding of ceremonies, called kokuonsai国恩祭, for the first time in Hiroshima Feud. They were events that gathered the Shinto priests of each locality together to play for the health and safty of the feudal lordout of gratitude for his benevolence.Such gatherings helped nurture a sense of solodarity and organization among local priests and thus enabled the Yoshida family's intervention of the early 1880s to have a more lasting effect on the region than in the 1740s.The paper concludes that the act of Shinto ritually repaying the feud for its kindness clearly a conscious attempt they were suffering.

This research is an analysis of the recognition of historic sites in the feudal domains of Edo period.Generally speaking, the history of temples and shrines is thought to have been handed down over the years. That is why the temples and shrines that were built in the old days are recognized as historical sites due to their history. However, in reality, the history of temples and shrines is often rewritten in a short period of time with the support of the lord.In addition, when the empirical trend rises in the Edo period, the old tradition may be denied because it does not match historical facts. In this research, I used the Mito domain as an example to examine the process by which a historical site was created from multiple triggers, and analyzed its impact on posterity's perception of history.

We reprinted various historical materials of the Edo period such as diaries which Nishinomiya Shrine in Hyogo prefecture, which was the base of the cult of Ebisu, possesses, and then clarified the role, activity, and change of its Shinto priests. Additionally, we clarified their geographical distribution and existence form by researching the historical materials to be related to shajin (Shinto priests of a lower rank) who were under the dominion of the Shrine of the whole country. Moreover, we fixed the future research system by, for instance, photographing the diaries of the modern times which the Shrine possess.

As many scholars have noted in recent years, society during the Edo Period attached great importance to highly refined rituals. This was true for the Tokugawa Shogunate and its various han domains, but the head temples of Buddhist sects also placed great weight on these rituals. By receiving offerings from believers and granting them various items in return, the temples maintained their religious authority. This study considers the activities of the Bingo Otatami-ko(Bingo Tatami Mat Organization) as an example of this offering behavior. Throughout the Edo Period, the Bingo Otatami-ko donated tatami mats, a specialty product of Bing Province(modern-day eastern Hiroshima Prefecture) for use in restoring the buildings of Nishi Hongwan-ji, a Buddhist temple. The study clarifies the structure that supported religious authority via the offering of tatami mats and furthermore reveals the existence of internal disagreements and conflicts in local society brought about by this act of offering.

The purpose of this investigation is to have a close perusal of the Inoues historical documents in Mibu Village, Yamagata County, Aki Province (now Kitahiroshima, Yamagata, Hiroshima Prefecture). Our research kept in mind how much the "provincially cultured people" of the late Modern Period tried to have their own character building, the enhancement of local culture, and the establishment of communication networks of the times. The Inoues had been a successive Shinto priest, and acted as a teacher of Terakoya [a private elementary school of the Edo Period]. Before the establishment of communication networks to meet the needs of the times, it was almost impossible that they could make themselves "provincially cultured people" and could propagate information well among the people of mountainous region of Chugoku. The fundamental form of the networks was formed by such people with an easy access to the information throughout Japan as priests, kokugakusha [scholars of ancient Japanese thought and culture], and haiku poets. By analyzing the documents, a number of the facts of the times were elucidated. The cultural broadening and exchanges were carried out in the forms of the propagation of traditional Japanese poetry and loan and/or lending and transcription of books, and oral tradition of kagura between such kokugakusha as Goto Hinaomi and Motoi Ohiro, from the Province, and some companions in their studies from Iwami Province. As the features characteristic of kokugaku ideas, they were conspicuous for their vernacular viewpoint, and it turned out to be essential for understanding common to all us that their way of thoughts was far from simply imitating such central scholars' as of Motoori Norinaga and Hirata Atsutane, Typical achievements of the "provincially cultured people" such as haikai poets were typical features, whereby the variety of information brought about, in particular, encouraged the thirst for knowledge of local people and enhanced the role of the people and contributed to attain their higher social standing. The correspondence concerning the exchange of literary works deserves an attention, because a variety of information is transmitted to the local people Our report carries also the reprinting of the diary kept by Inoue Yorisada from Tenpo 8 to the same 12, which we hope will contribute to the further development of research in the field as common property in the academic world.
