Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) present a promising alternative to traditional activated sludge treatment for livestock wastewater, offering a carbon‐neutral, sustainable approach to wastewater management. Activated sludge treatment requires significant energy input for aeration and produces unpleasant odors. MFCs eliminate the need for energy‐intensive aeration, simultaneously generating energy during wastewater treatment. Platinum‐based electrodes commonly used in the cathode of MFCs pose a significant cost barrier, necessitating advancements in electrode materials for practical, large‐scale application. This study reports on the performance of a continuous methanogen biocathode MFC system engineered to simultaneously treat cattle‐barn wastewater and utilize carbon dioxide without 2‐bromoethanesulfonic acid (BES). Carbon felt treated with nitric acid without BES successfully reduces methane production by 93%. An MFC configuration utilizing nitric acid‐treated carbon felt as the anode and an oak‐derived carbon electrode as the cathode effectively treat wastewater and convert CO2 to methane, yielding a power density of 5.5 mW m−2 and Coulombic efficiency of 7.3%, approximately twice those without nitric acid treatment and surpassing even the performance of the system with BES treatment. This system represents a promising, low‐cost, and environmentally sustainable approach to renewable energy production and livestock wastewater treatment.

Various support carriers are used for high-density retention of methanogenic archaea in anaerobic wastewater treatment systems. Although the physicochemical properties of carrier materials and microorganisms influence the adhesion of methanogenic archaea, details about the underlying mechanism remain poorly characterized. We applied seven types of chemical surface modifications to carbon felts to clarify the adhesion properties of Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus, a representative thermophilic hydrogenotrophic methanogen. The relationship between carrier surface properties and methanogen adhesion was evaluated. M. thermautotrophicus adhesion was significantly increased up to 2.6 times in comparison with control on carbon felts treated with NaOH, HCl, H2SO4, or Na2HPO4. Treated carbon felts showed a lower water contact angle, but no correlation between the carrier surface contact angle and methanogen adhesion was observed. On the other hand, at the surface of the carrier that showed improved adhesion of methanogens, the ratio of -COOH : -OH was 1 : 0.65. Such a ratio was not observed with treated carriers for which methanogen adhesion was not improved. Therefore, in the adhesion of M. thermautotrophicus, the functional group abundance was important as well as physical surface properties such as the hydrophobicity. Hydrogenotrophic methanogens are involved in active methanation during the startup of anaerobic digestion. Additionally, these methanogenic archaea function as methanogenic cathode catalysts. Therefore, anaerobic digestion performance will greatly improve by controlling the adhesion of hydrogenotrophic methanogens such as M. thermautotrophicus.

Hydrogen gas can be effectively synthesized from the electrochemical and/or photochemical decomposition process of H2S because of its low electrochemical potential. However, decomposition rate was gradually decreased with increasing the amount of poly sulfide ion, such as S22-, which simultaneously synthesized as the by-product during the reaction. Thus, poly sulfide ion should be removed from the solution, nevertheless it could not be removed from the solution by without loss of basic solution and/or dissipation of metal ion.
In this study, the idea based on the interaction between fullerenes and sulfur was introduced into the development of collection method for poly sulfide ions from basic solution. Fullerenes was dissolved into toluene, and mixed with aqueous solution contained S22- ion. After 6 hours agitation, the color of the aqueous phase was changed from yellow to transparent in the case of fullerene/toluene solution treatment. Additionally, during every treatment, elemental sulfur was produced in the aqueous phase, and fullerene-sulfur compounds, such as C60S16 and C70S16, were formed in the toluene phase after 4th treatment. Thus, extracting and separating of poly sulfide ion from aqueous solution was succeeded.

Photocatalytic decomposition of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) into hydrogen (H2) by using the stratified type photocatalyst is considered as efficient route for the conversion of natural energy (solar energy) into clean energy (H2) . This reaction obeyed to next formula; 2HS-→2H+ + S22- + 2e-→H2↑+ S22-. To construct the continuous system, effective conversion route from S22-ion into H2S gas should be developed. In other word, sulfur cycle system should be constructed.
In this report, conversion route from sulfur compounds (elemental sulfur and Na2SO4) into H2S by utilizing biological reaction was studied. H2S gas was stably synthesized until c.a.5% in the case of elemental sulfur addition, while it was c.a. 2% in the case of Na2SO4. Rate of biological reaction was seriously decreased if concentration of H2S was over these values because of its toxicity. Conversion efficiency was higher in the case of elemental sulfur addition since impediment of sodium ion was not progressed.

Titanium oxide films were formed using a titanium target by a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique under different oxygen pressures from 10−6 to 100 Pa. Their densities and thickness were evaluated from total external X-ray reflection profiles and their atomic structures were determined by grazing incidence X-ray scattering (GIXS), and their surface morphology was observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The atomic structures of the films were gradually changed from metal titanium through TiO to Rutile-type titanium dioxide TiO2. The film surfaces became rough above 13.3 Pa oxygen pressure during deposition. Their UV transmission spectroscopy was also observed to predict their photocatalytic activities.

The catalytic activity of the metallic ultrafine particles is known to change by their oxidation state. In this study, an attempt has been made to discuss the control of the oxidation state of Ni by synthesizing the ultrafine alloy particles through the liquid-phase reduction method. Zn plays as an electron donor to Ni nanoparticles so that the catalytic activity of Ni is controlled.

The atomic structures of Mo–Ni alloys electrodeposited from aqueous solutions containing various molybdenum and nickel concentrations were studied by X-ray diffraction. The films are arranged with respect to molybdenum concentrations in the films. That is, the Group I (Mo<10%), the Group II (20%<Mo<30%) and the Group III (Mo≈40%). In the Group I, the structures of the films are fcc crystals of nickel solid solutions. The films in the Groupes II and III are amorphous. The hydrogen evolution as an electrode in alkaline water electric cell was also compared. At about 20% molybdenum, the nickel film shows the maximum hydrogen evolution.

The catalytic activity of the metallic ultrafine particles is known to change by it's oxidation state. In this paper, an attempt has been made to discuss the control of the oxidation state of Ni by synthesizing the ultrafine alloy particles through the Liquid-Phase reduction method. The possibility of Ni-based particules as a catalyst for loctene hydrogenation was also studied.

A novel preparation method of supported catalysts have been reported, named as Liquid-phase Reductive Deposition, on which precursor metal complex was first specifically adsorbed on the support surface, followed by heterogeneous nucleation and growth. In contrst, bBy CVRD (Chemical Vapor Reductive Deposition) technique, Ni nanoparticles were reductively deposited onto titania thin film, which was prepared by pulsed laser deposition method with using rutile as a target. Here, we used nickelocene as a precursor and hydrazine as a reducing agent in a vapor phase. Ni nanoparticles were formed through adsorption of nickelocene, reduction by hydrazine, and heterogeneous nucleation of Ni on titania surface and growth. Without hydrazine, no particle was formed. Ni size was controlled by a partial pressure of nickelocene and hydrazine, and reaction time. Formed Ni was characterized as metal by ESCA.

In this research and development, we report a newer approach of power and energy efficiency with the use of a simple structure employing the highly crystalline single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) produced by arc discharge method with high-temperature annealing. We successfully fabricated elements of a planar lighting device using a phosphor screen emitting visible light in a simple diode structure composed of the cathode containing the highly crystalline SWCNTs. The anode, on the other hand, was made with phosphor deliberately optimized by coverage of silicon oxides, and it will be assembled together with the cathode by the new stable assembling process resulting to stand-alone flat plane-emission panel. And the phosphors were attempted to control light emission convolution employing long time afterglow of phosphors. We succeeded in clarifying the efficacy and applicability underlying the electrical conductivity of SWCNT by controlling their crystallinity.

From the results of electrochemical analysis, it become clear that catalytic reaction between polysulfide ion and fullerenes and oxygen was progress at the water - organic solvents interface. As the results, polysulfide ion (by products of photo catalytic reactions) was successfully changed into elemental sulfur and/or fullerenes-sulfur compounds. Moreover, polysulfide ion can be changed into industrial materials, such as polysulfide rubber which has high resistance properties. Synthesized elemental sulfur can be changed into hydrogen sulfide, which is the origin of photo catalytic reaction. Thus, environmental friendly hydrogen generation system by using sulfur can be constructed.

In this study, we prepared high crystalline single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) thin film (transmittance 9.0 %)/bulk film (transmittance 2.3 %) interfacial structured film cells and investigated the photoelectromotive force. When a light (solar simulator AM1.5 with 100 mW/cm2) was irradiated toward the bulk film side (10×10 mm2) of the cells, the photoelectromotive force of 0.90 mV occurred. The Seebeck coefficient was estimated to be +66.4 μV/K, and the carrier of high crystalline SWCNT was a positive hole. Additionally, the interface of thin/bulk film was not Schottky junction but Ohmic since the I-V curve of the cells showed a liner shape. The photoelectromotive force in the SWCNT film/bulk interface cell is considered to be thermoelectromotive force derived from thermal gradient generated by photo-excitation electron converted into heat.

A high crystallinity single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) film/Ag cell was fabricated. When the SWCNT/Ag interface of the cell was irradiated with a visible light (650 nm), photovoltaic electromotive force of 0.16mV occurred. After checking the current-voltage (I-V) characteristic of the cell at the time of the light irradiation, the slope of the curve showed the constant linear nature, and the interface of SWCNT/Ag was found to be ohmic junction. As a result of having measured the electromotive force outbreak properties for the on/off of light irradiation, the electromotive force showed relaxation time. We found that the photovoltaic electromotive force was derived from thermoelectromotive force by light absorption having changed for heat.

Ti or Zr-containing composite oxides with perovskite structures are well known as a functional material of excellent piezoelectric, ferroelectric, and dielectric properties and widely used for the production of gas sensors, transducers, non-volatile memories, capacitors, microwave devices, and insulating films. In the present study, we have developed an efficient procedure for the preparation of Ti-or Zr-containing composite oxides nanoparticles such as BaTiO_3, SrTiO_3, BaZrO_3, and SrZrO_3 in the gel-sol system. Furthermore, the resulting Ti-or Zr-containing nanoparticles were applied as a novel-type of visible light-responsive photocatalyst by the partial sulfurization technique which we have developed. To obtain partially sulfurized Ti-or Zr-containing composite oxides powders with better photoactivity under visible light, the sulfurization behavior of the Ti-or Zr-containing composite oxides is necessary to select an adequate temperature of partial sulfurization. In this regard, the thermogravimetric study of the Ti-or Zr-containing composite oxides nanoparticles prepared by the gel-sol method was carried out by using a quartz spring-type thermobalance in CS_2 atmosphere, and the results were compared with the sulfurization behavior of commercial SrTiO_3 powders with larger particle sizes. For the low-temperature sulfurization, we found that the presence of OH groups plays an important role. Evaluation of the photocatalytic activities of partial sulfurized nanoparticles under visible light revealed that the sulfurization enhances the photocatalytic activities.

本化合物の組成はC_<60>S_<16>(C:78.91atm%,S=21.09atm%)及びC_<70>S_<16>(C:81.4atm%,S=18.6atm%)であり,その構造はC_<60>S_<16>はC-centered monoclinic(a=20.874(1)Å,b=21.139(1)Å,c=10.5690(6)Å,β=111.93(1)゜),C_<70>S_<16>はprimitive monoclinic,(a=1.5271nm, b=1.49971nm, c=2.18024nm and β=109.791゜)であることがわかった.

The purpose of this research is to analyze precisely the reversible structural change in phase change recording materials represented for CD-RW by the anomalous X-ray scattering (AXS) method under the grazing incidence condition. The phase change recording materials, using the variation of optical reflectivity between crystalline and non-crystalline phases, attract much attention as a storaging medium of digital information. These materials have already been commercialized and their upgrading such as capacity enlargement and high reliability will advance in future more and more. As showing this tendency to increase, it is anticipated that the structural control greatly influences their characteristics. Therefore, the structural analysis of phase change recording materials in the atomic level might be one of important subjects for developing steadily these fields. The AXS method by using the anomalous dispersion effect may be one of powerful tools for obtaining the structural information in the atomic level. In 2000, the local structural information of amorphous Ag-Br-Ge-O system has been estimated from the AXS measurements using Ge and Br K absorption edges. The resultant structural parameters suggest mat GeO_4 tetrahedral unit is the probable structural entity in this glass and the arrangement of Ag and Br ions is similar to that in crystalline AgBr. From these results, effectiveness of the AXS method for characterizing amorphous materials could be confirmed. In 2001, the usefulness and validity of energy dispersive grazing incidence X-ray reflectometry have been demonstrated for characterizing the multilayer interfaces. The method appears to hold promise in reducing difficulty of conventional angular dispersive method due to absorption with an upper layer by enabling the use of high energy white X-ray radiation and obtaining much higher reflected intensity. Taken from all results in this research, it would be very interesting to extend the present method to other systems.

The soot as products of arc-discharge using carbon rod electrodes contain the various carbon cluster materials extractable by organic solvents and unextractable due to strong interaction between these and remaining fullerene soot. The extractable carbon clusters are relatively stable. Therefore, it is concerned that the carbon clusters having interesting properties exist in the unextractable materials. In this project, we had researched the synthesis conditions to obtain the soot containing large amount of exotic carbon clusters, the synthesis and the separation of the fullerene-oxide dimer or the small fullerenes, and the high-yield synthesis and the purification of the carbon nanotubes. We found that the yield of carbon clusters was deeply related to the synthesis conditions such as pressure in the arc-discharge chamber, atmospheric gas, or magnetic field. In the study for synthesis of the fullerene-oxide dimer, we succeeded to establish the synthesis process of fullerene oxides, the dimerization process, and the purification and separation process. We also have made an attempt to synthesize small fullerene like a C_<36>, to extract and separate from the soot, and the dependence of the shape conditions in the chambers. In the study of the synthesis and the purification of carbon nanotubes, we studied the control of the state of arc-plasma in order to improve the yield of carbon nanotubes and to control the size of them. As a result, we found that the growth rate was depended on the density of carbon radical in arc plasma and it can be controlled by application of magnetic field.

The purposes of this research project are the synthesis of photocatalyst can convert from the solar-energy to the chemical energy and the environment conservation through the redox reactions of sulfur compounds in aqueous solutions. We had succeeded to synthesize the photocatalysts of metal sulfide semiconductors with high-efficiency of hydrogen generation. The photocatalysts were synthesized from metal oxides or hydroxides as starting material. Our photocatalysts synthesized by a novel wet-reaction process have the "stratified" structure composed by nano-crystals. In this project, we had researched the relationship between the stratified structure and the photocatalytic activity of the energy conversion. It was found that the stratified-semiconductors formed capsule with a thin layer by ultra fine particles and maintained a potential gradient within this layer, from the results of the morphology observation by transmission electron microscope and the analysis of elemental distribution in the semiconductor particle by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. We can consider that the effective separation of the photoexcited electron and the hole was due to the potential gradient created by the stratified structure. We also researched the studies to establish the reaction system using sea water and sulfur compounds. As a result, we succeeded recovering of various metal ions as sulfides and found the possibilities of removing of harmful heavy metal ions and recovering of useful noble metal ions from sea water. We applied the synthesis process of stratified material to various compound semiconductor materials considered they can use visible region of sunlight. As the results of experiments, we found the stratified-CdS was obtained. These stratified-CdS particles can generate about 7 litters/hour to 1 m^2 of sunlight irradiation.

The application of photocatalytic reaction to generate hydrogen as a source of energy is being given higher priority in photochemical research. However, the prevention of re-association of the excited electron and the hole within the catalyst has been considered difficult and considerable researches are in progress. We had succeeded to synthesize the ZnS photocatalyst with high-efficiency of hydrogen generation under UV-light irradiation. The stratified-ZnS is synthesized by a novel wet-reaction process from ZnO or Zn(OH)_2 as starting materials and has the "stratified" structure composed by nano-crystals. In this project, we had researched the relationship between the stratified structure and the photocatalytic activity. It was found that the stratified-ZnS formed capsule with a thin layer by ultra fine particles and maintained a potential gradient within this layer, from the results of the morphology observation by transmission electron microscope and the analysis of elemental distribution in the semiconductor particle by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. We can consider that the effective separation of the photoexcited electron and the hole was due to the potential gradient created by the stratified structure. We also applied the synthesis process of stratified material to other compound semiconductor materials considered they can use visible region of sunlight. As the results of experiments, we found the stratified-CdS was able to synthesize from CdO or Cd(OH)_2 as starting materials by the same process in ZnS with optimized conditions. These stratified-CdS particles have photoactivity toward visible light less than 510 nm in wavelength and can generate about 7 litters/hour to 1 m^2 of sunlight irradiation. As the next step for practical application of the hydrogen generation system using the sunlight, we will carry out a research about a sulfur-recycle process by using biochemical or hydrothermal reaction, and so on.

In this work, we carried out to research to produce and purify good quality single wall carbon nanatubes. The main objective of this work was to control the arc plasma using the magnetic field and synthesis nanotubes with controlled morphology. Furthermore, the SWNTs synthesized were purified using hydrothermal treatment, which was already developed by us. Final aim of this research was to develop a comprehensive methodology for the production of highly pure (above 99%) single wall SWNTs in large quantities. In the year 2000, SWNTs synthesis conditions were optimized in the arc-discharge chamber designed and manufactured in the year 1999, and evaluated the quality and condition of purified SWNTs using transmission electron microscope, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometer, etc.. Furthermore, a modified version of the arc-discharge chamber was designed and manufactured to enable experiments under strong magnetic fields (max. 5 Tesla). As a consequence, information related to the growth mechanism of tubes was acquired. And also, SWNTs were synthesized in a magnetic field as strong as five tesla for the first time. Based on the above research findings, we succeeded in the synthesis and purification of SWNTs and supply quality SWNTs to other groups. As a result, we contributed to the property evaluation and application oriented research fields of this special research project.
