    The structural kinetics of surface events on a Pt/C cathode catalyst in a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) with a practical catalyst loading (0.5 mgPt cm(-2)) for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell were investigated by in situ time-resolved X-ray absorption fine structure analysis (XAFS; time resolution: 100 ms) for the first time. The rate constants of structural changes in the Pt/C cathode catalyst in the MEA during voltage cycling were successfully estimated. For voltage-cycling processes, all reactions (electrochemical reactions and structural changes in the Pt catalyst) in the MEA were found to be much faster than those in an MEA with a thick cathode catalyst layer, but the in situ time-resolved XAFS analysis revealed that significant time lags similarly existed between the electrochemical reactions and the structural changes in the Pt cathode catalyst. The time-resolved XAFS also revealed differences in the structural kinetics of the Pt/C cathode catalyst for the voltage-cycling processes under N2 and air flows at the cathode.

    Extensive research efforts have been dedicated to Li-excess compounds with anionic redox reaction as potential high-capacity positive electrode materials for Li-ion battery applications. The origin of activation on anionic redox is still under debate, and a unified understanding is necessary, especially for sulfide-based compounds without conductive d electrons. Herein, joint experimental and theoretical study is conducted for Li-excess and stoichiometric compounds with different crystal structures, cation-disordered rocksalt, and cation-ordered layered structures. In contrast to the understanding of Li-excess oxides, sulfide-based compounds with ordered layered structures are electrochemically less active compared with the materials with disordered structure. Theoretical study reveals that a unique local structure for a sulfide ion coordinated by 6 Li ions, SLi6 configuration, is formed, which can be found only for the disordered structure and not for the layered structure. The unique local structure triggers electron delocalization for sulfide 3p orbitals, leading to superior electronic conductivity, as experimentally evidenced, and thus anionic redox is successfully activated. Furthermore, such nonuniform local structures lead to easier structural distortion and efficient S-S dimerization, and even trimerization (S32-), upon delithiation. Although sulfide-based compounds as battery electrode materials suffer from dissolution after oxidation, this practical problem is effectively mitigated by the use of highly concentrated electrolyte solutions with fewer free solvent molecules, leading to superior reversibility for anionic redox. The insights derived can guide the development of high-energy electrode materials with anionic redox with or without transition metal ions possessing conductive d electrons.

    Abstract SiO2 aggregates in styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) were observed using ptychographic X-ray computed tomography (PXCT). The rubber composites were illuminated with X-rays focused by total reflection focusing mirrors, and the ptychographic diffraction patterns were collected using a CITIUS detector in the range of −75° to +75° angle of incidence. The projection images of the rubber composites were reconstructed with a two-dimensional resolution of 76 nm, and no significant structural changes were observed during the PXCT measurements. A three-dimensional image of the rubber composite was reconstructed with an isotropic resolution of 98 nm. Segmentation of SiO2 from the SBR, based on a histogram analysis of the phase shift, revealed a fragmented network structure of interconnected SiO2 aggregates.

    Abstract As the first experiment at BL10U in NanoTerasu, tender X-ray ptychographic coherent diffraction imaging (PCDI) was conducted using a photon energy of 3.5 keV. The ptychographic diffraction patterns from a 200 nm-thick Ta test chart and a micrometer-sized particle of sulfurized polymer were collected. Subsequently, phase images were reconstructed with resolutions of sub-20 nm and sub-50 nm, respectively. In the near future, tender X-ray PCDI with sub-10 nm resolution is anticipated that can potentially revolutionize the visualization of nanoscale structures and chemical states in various functional materials composed of light elements.

    For devices encountering long-term stability challenges, a precise evaluation of degradation is of paramount importance. However, methods for comprehensively elucidating the degradation mechanisms in devices, particularly those undergoing dynamic chemical and mechanical changes during operation, such as batteries, are limited. Here, a method is presented using operando computed tomography combined with X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy (CT-XANES) that can directly track the evolution of the 3D distribution of the local capacity loss in battery electrodes during (dis)charge cycles, thereby enabling a five-dimensional (the 3D spatial coordinates, time, and chemical state) analysis of the degradation. This paper demonstrates that the method can quantify the spatiotemporal dynamics of the local capacity degradation within an electrode during cycling, which has been truncated by existing bulk techniques, and correlate it with the overall electrode performance degradation. Furthermore, the method demonstrates its capability to uncover the correlation among observed local capacity degradation within electrodes, reaction history during past (dis)charge cycles, and electrode microstructure. The method thus provides critical insights into the identification of degradation factors that are not available through existing methods, and therefore, will contribute to the development of batteries with long-term stability.

    Ptychographic coherent diffraction imaging (PCDI) is a synchrotron X-ray microscopy technique that provides high spatial resolution and a wide field of view. To improve the performance of PCDI, the performance of the synchrotron radiation source and imaging detector should be improved. In this study, ptychographic diffraction pattern measurements using the CITIUS high-speed X-ray image detector and the corresponding image reconstruction are reported. X-rays with an energy of 6.5 keV were focused by total reflection focusing mirrors, and a flux of ∼2.6 × 1010 photons s−1 was obtained at the sample plane. Diffraction intensity data were collected at up to ∼250 Mcounts s−1 pixel−1 without saturation of the detector. Measurements of tantalum test charts and silica particles and the reconstruction of phase images were performed. A resolution of ∼10 nm and a phase sensitivity of ∼0.01 rad were obtained. The CITIUS detector can be applied to the PCDI observation of various samples using low-emittance synchrotron radiation sources and to the stability evaluation of light sources.

    Simultaneous measurement of X-ray ptychography and fluorescence microscopy allows high-resolution and high-sensitivity observations of the microstructure and trace-element distribution of a sample. In this paper, we propose a method for improving scanning fluorescence X-ray microscopy (SFXM) images, in which the SFXM image is deconvolved via virtual single-pixel imaging using different probe images for each scanning point obtained by X-ray ptychographic reconstruction. Numerical simulations confirmed that this method can increase the spatial resolution while suppressing artifacts caused by probe imprecision, e.g., probe position errors and wavefront changes. The method also worked well in synchrotron radiation experiments to increase the spatial resolution and was applied to the observation of S element maps of ZnS particles.

    Iron oxides with various compositions and polymorphs have been widely used as compounds that require reversible redox properties, such as catalysts. However, partial decomposition during phase transitions often causes irreversible degradation of the redox properties of iron oxides. Cr doping into the crystalline framework of iron oxide dendrites improves the stability of the structural transformation of iron oxides. We spatially visualized the FeOx-dendrite phase distribution during oxidation in crystalline dendritic FeOx and Cr-FeOx particles by full-field nano-X-ray absorption fine structure spectroimaging. The spectroimaging visualized propagation in the phase transitions in the individual FeOx particles and changes in the phase transition behaviors of the Cr-FeOx particles. The statistical analysis of the spectroimaging data revealed the phase transition trends in parts of the FeOx and Cr-FeOx particles in three Fe density zones (particle thicknesses) and the probability densities of the phase proportions in the dendrites.

    The spectroscopic ptychography method, a technique combining X-ray ptychography imaging and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, is one of the most promising and powerful tools for studying the chemical states and morphological structures of bulk materials at high resolutions. However, this technique still requires long measurement periods because of insufficient coherent X-ray intensity. Although the improvements in hardware represent a critical solution, breakthroughs in software for experiments and analyses are also required. This paper proposes a novel method for restoring the spectrum structures from spectroscopic ptychography measurements with reduced energy points, by utilizing the Kramers–Kronig relationship. First, a numerical simulation is performed of the spectrum restoration for the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) oscillation from the thinned theoretical absorption and phase spectra. Then, this algorithm is extended by binning the noise removal to handle actual experimental spectral data. Spectrum restoration for the experimental EXAFS data obtained from spectroscopic ptychography measurements is also successfully demonstrated. The proposed restoration will help shorten the time required for spectroscopic ptychography single measurements and increase the throughput of the entire experiment under limited time resources.

    <jats:p>This work demonstrates a combination technique of X-ray ptychography and the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (ptychography-EXAFS) method, which can determine the interatomic distances of bulk materials at the nanoscale. In the high-resolution ptychography-EXAFS method, it is necessary to use high-intense coherent X-rays with a uniform wavefront in a wide energy range, hence a ptychographic measurement system installed with advanced Kirkpatrick–Baez mirror focusing optics is developed and its performance is evaluated. Ptychographic diffraction patterns of micrometre-size MnO particles are collected by using this system at 139 energies between 6.504 keV and 7.114 keV including the Mn <jats:italic>K</jats:italic> absorption edge, and then the EXAFS of MnO is derived from the reconstructed images. By analyzing the EXAFS spectra obtained from a 48 nm × 48 nm region, the nanoscale bond lengths of the first and second coordination shells of MnO are determined. The present approach has great potential to elucidate the unclarified relationship among the morphology, electronic state and atomic arrangement of inhomogeneous bulk materials with high spatial resolution.</jats:p>

    We report the first demonstration of multibeam ptychography using synchrotron hard X-rays, which can enlarge the field of view of the reconstructed image of objects by efficiently using partially coherent X-rays. We measured the ptychographic diffraction patterns of a Pt test sample and MnO particles using three mutually incoherent coherent beams with a high intensity that were produced by using both the multiple slits and a pair of focusing mirrors. We successfully reconstructed the phase map of the samples at a spatial resolution of 25 nm in a field of view about twice as wide as that in the single-beam ptychography. We also computationally simulated a feasible experimental setup using random modulators to further enlarge the field of view by increasing the number of available beams. The present method has the potential to enable the high spatial resolution and large field-of-view observation of specimens in materials science and biology.

    The aim of this study was to systematically understand the unique ion transport and storage properties observed at the solid-state ionic interface by measuring the modulation and distribution of various physical/chemical states near the interface by using various analytical techniques and integrating these findings. Various advanced measurement techniques are developed for the analysis of the solid-state ionic interface. Common model hetero-interface system (cathode/electrolyte interface in all-solid-state batteries) and a common model homo-interface system (crystalline/amorphous interface in glass-ceramic solid electrolytes) were selected within this research project, and the developed advanced analytical techniques were applied. It was found that the modulation of physical/chemical states and associated unique phenomena observed at the solid-state ionic interface can be well-interpreted by considering the chemical potential of movable components.

    By upgrading the ptychography-XAFS method with X-ray optics and informatics approaches, we have established multidimensional X-ray ptychography to visualize nanoscale structures and chemical states inside micrometer-order bulk samples. A platform for synchrotron radiation nanospectroscopic imaging utilizing multidimensional X-ray ptychography was established by promoting applied research on the elucidation of the correlation between nanostructures and function of various practical materials such as catalyst materials, battery materials, and solder materials at several beamlines of SPring-8.

    In this study, various imaging XAFS measurements, including tychographic XAFS, were performed to visualize the chemical state distribution of lithium battery cathode active material particles and the electrode interface during the charge-discharge process. The aim of this study was to extract unknown structure-function correlations related to ion transport and diffusion phenomena within and at particle interfaces. Tychographic XAFS measurements inside spinel-type lithium manganese-nickelate (LNMO) particles have been performed, and the distributions suggesting heterogeneity of Mn and Ni compositions and chemical states within LNMO particles have been successfully captured. In addition, we succeeded in visualizing the internal chemical state of the LNMO particles by conducting measurement experiments on Li-rich vanadium oxide cathode active materials and thin-film all-solid-state battery systems.

    Visualization of chemical states of heterogeneous solid catalysts was investigated by imaging XAFS techniques to reveal relationships between their non-uniform structure and activity. Two topics as in blow were reported here. (1) Fe chemical state of dendrite FeOx and FeCrOx were visualized by full-field imaging XAFS with 50 nm spatial-resolution, and phase-transition tendency in FeOx and FeCrOx particles during redox reaction were discussed. (2)Ce chemical state of Ce2Zr2Ox (x=7-8) particles were successfully visualized by ptychographic-XAFS with less than 50 nm spatial resolution. Several types of local correlations found between the Ce density and Ce valence images indicated the existence of several oxidation behaviors in the oxygen storage process in the Ce2Zr2Ox particles.

    XAFS imaging techniques combining X-ray absorption fine structure and imaging techniques have been developed to visualize the spatial structures of heterogeneous catalysts. Scanning nano-XAFS using focused X-ray nanobeam was applied to Ce-Zr mixed oxide solid-solution particles for automobile exhausting processes. The distribution of Ce oxidation states in the Ce-Zr mixed oxide particles was imaged for their oxygen storage and release processes, showing different reaction modes for the oxygen storage and release processes. We also developed imaging XAFS using a zone plate and CT-XAFS and applied them to visualize the phase transitions of iron oxide crystals and the distribution of electrocatalysts.
