隔月で読書会を開催し、新宮寺本『続高僧伝』巻四・玄奘伝について、翻刻、校勘、日本古写経諸本校訂本作成、古写経系テクストと版本系テクスト対照表の作成を、第21紙13行（大正蔵本、454頁下、第27行に相当）まで進めた。併せて、同範囲の日本語訳注を作成した。読書会と並行して、翻刻、校勘の方針の見直しと、新たな方針にもとづく既作業分の修正と未作業分の実施について分担を定め、2022年度における全体の調整および2023年度（最終年度）における研究報告書刊行に備えることとした。 2020年12月20日（日）には、第二回研究集会「写本から刊本へ」をZoomミーティングによるオンライン公開研究会として開催し、国際仏教学大学院大学准教授の池麗梅氏による講演「『続高僧伝』と刊本大蔵経」、研究分担者・斉藤達也による研究報告「新宮寺本『続高僧伝』巻八慧遠伝のテキストについて―諸本校異から見た特徴―」を実施した。 2021年10月17日（日）には、第三回研究集会「僧伝読解の実際」をZoomミーティングによるオンライン公開研究会として開催し、上海師範大学副教授の王招国（定源）氏による講演「『高僧伝』は誰によって修訂されたのか―諸本校異から見た特徴―」、研究代表者・齋藤智寛による研究報告「『続高僧伝』序解釈の諸問題」を実施した。これら二回の研究集会を通じて、新宮寺本巻八は興聖寺本に近く、同時に独自要素も有すること、また『続高僧伝』序についての先行訳注は論旨の理解に問題があることが解明された。

The subject of this study's consideration is the worship in the Buddha's relic in pan-Asia. We conducted a field survey in each region, focusing on the shape of the vessel that holds the relic and the way the vessel is buried. The purpose of this study is to elucidate two things: how the reliquary has changed over time and region, and how the correlation between the relic and the vessel has changed. In order to achieve this goal, we conducted field surveys of Buddhist temple sites in southern and northern India, Nepal, Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region in China, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia, as well as surveys of related artifacts in museums in each region. As a result, an unconventional new viewpoint has been opened that the propagation route of the reliquary is assumed to be the north route (North India - Gandhara - West) and the south route (South India - Sri Lanka - Indonesia).

The purpose of this reseach was to clarify the "Representative function of the Buddha statues" while taking into consideration the religious meanings of the Buddha statues, as "living Buddha" and "Holy miracle." For that purpose, we focused on the three viewpoints of (1) the location of the Buddha statues, (2) the Decoration, and (3) the Internal of statues, and conducted a thorough survey by selecting Buddha statues that are closely related. As a result, in four years, we surveyed the 69 statues and 4 objects in 20 temples/shrines, 10 statues in 7 public institutions, 1 statue in personal collection. And we published a research result report in the form of a booklet containing detailed research reports and images, and sent it to related organizations and researchers to open the research results.

Representation of Miroku Bosatsu(Bodhisattva Maitreya) in his Pure Land, changes in appearance that the cross-legged figure to cross the foot, branching into a form that down one foot on its way. Figure of the cross-legs also changes in appearance to down the legs. Iconography of Miroku, China from Central Asia , further the Korean Peninsula , had been propagated to Japan , the process of the change through the field survey , became clear than before. In addition, as for the Tosotsu-ten Mandara depicting the Pure Land of Miroku, although there is only a front-facing composition in mainland China, the Middle Ages of the Pure Land view of the Japanese composition of diagonal direction has become typical. It will be declared that this is a feature of Japanese Buddhist paintings.

In this research and study, we focused the faith of Sarira(Buddha’s bone) and the stupas that was built by the Emperor Wen’s order in the year 601AD-604AD. Our research team that members was specialist of art history, archeology, history, and conservation science has done a field in China and Vietnam, from the viewpoint of ［prehistory of the stupa location］［meaning of syncretistic fusion of Confucianism and Buddhism］,［history of faith of Sarira］. As a result we revealed identified present location, involved relics, landscape of stupas, about the 30 stupas that was built in the year 601AD.

During three years, we have conducted the research in the area including Tohoku(Miyagi), Kanto/Koshinetsu(Chiba, Kanagawa), Kansai(Kyoto, Nara),Chugoku district(Yamaguchi), Shikoku(Kochi) . Therefore we got the data and photos of 102 statues. After we finished the research, we published the research report (volume of texts: 129pages, volume of figures: 268pages) on March, 2014. Because of the distribution of the reports, we believe that we could make an important contribution to academic world and society.

We focused on the faith of Sarira(Buddha's bone) and decoration in the Sui and Tang dynasties. Specialist art history, archeology, history, and conservation science has done a field research in China. As a result, from the viewpoint of[location], [expression], [reception], was found to be as follows. [location] We determined the location of the place where 7 out of 16 temples of the Emperor Wen has directed the construction in the year 601 AD. [expression] Expression of the stone coffin excavated from the ruins of Shaanxi province Shen De Si temple, which has the only existing stupa, was found to be Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism are involved. [reception] Through the analysis of the stone monument and Sarira casket, we pointed out the new subject about reception of Sarira.

We conducted the examination on the Buddhist Images as below ; 2003 : temples 14, works 38 private collection 2, works 2 public collection 2, works 2 2004 : temples 15, works 35 public collection 3, works 7 2005 : temples 10, works 10 public collection 2, works 6 The places where we have conducted the examination are the Fukushima, Yamagata, Miyagi, Iwate, Niigata, Tochigi, and Ibaraki prefecture. The results of the research on the sculptures in Ibaraki pref. was published in "Kokka"no.1326 ; Special Issue : Buddhist Sculpture in the Hitachi Region. We used a several type of camera including a digital micro scope and an X-ray photograph machine. In this research we found three new sculptures ; a nyorai statue of Shogyo-ji in Niigata, Yakushi, Kannon, and Kokuzo statue of Myoho-ji in Ibaraki, and Godairiki-bosatsu statue of Ikekameku in Ibaraki. The remark of these three statues is found to be important for the history of Heian sculpture.

The research was conducted under the three points of view below. 1)The Buddhist art under the Relic worship. 2)The relationship between the way to bury in tomb with the way to bury the Relic under the Stupas and Pagodas. 3)The worshipper image found in the Buddhist statue and the Reliquary. Concerning each aspect, I did research tour to examine objects. The objects that I have examined are below. 1)The Reliquary that were found in the Shan-xi province in China. 2)The Stupas and Pagodas in the He-nan and the Shan-dong provinces in China. 3)The Buddhist caves in the Shan-xi and the Shan-dong provinces in China. At the end of three years of research term, I issued the reports of the analysis. In this report, I discussed on three topics based on the point of view above. 1)a transition of the shape of Reliquary 2)the meaning and the function of the vase of Yakushi-nyorai statue in Yakushij-ji(nara) 3)the meaning and the function of "foreign" image found in the Buddhist Arts

This research was based on site-surveys using art historical and archaeological methodology on the subject of the Buddhist sculpture located in the Tang dynasty cave temples in Shaanxi province, China. The goal of this research was to understand the Buddhist sculptural styles of the Tang dynasty which developed around Chang'an and to compare these styles with those of the Buddhist sculpture produced during the same period (7th through 9th centuries) in Japan. 1. Site Survey The first study was conducted from August 23rd through September 13, 1998, and the second study was conducted from August 28 through September 18, 1999. With the Chinese researchers involved in the project, we conducted on-site surveys at the Cishan-si grottoes in Linyou region, and the rock-carved Buddhas at the Linxiqiao site in the same region. The contents of these surveys can be summarized as follows. 1) Cishan-si grottoes Survey reports were produced, photographs taken, and drawings produced of all 3 caves and 10 niches. 2) Linxiqiao Buddhas A survey of all 19 niches was completed. In order to survey the niches set into the sheer cliff face, temporary scaffolding was erected which allowed us to fully survey the site. As a related part of this survey, studies were conducted on the related historical monuments in Linyou region, and of Tang dynasty grotto temples, and the Tang and Northern Song dynasty grotto temples in Shaanxi province. In order to make comparisons with the Buddhist sculptural styles of other regions during this period, surveys were also carried out at the Longmen Grottoes, Luoyan, Henan, and surrounding small grotto sites. 2. Survey Materials Organization The survey materials produced during this two-year study include : 1) the organization of survey notes in both Chinese and Japanese ; 2) a) 52 4 x 5 color transparencies, b) 272 6 x 6 color transparencies, c) 261 6 x 6 color negatives, d) 1,652 35mm colornegatives ; 3) a list of documentary materials related to the Shaanxi province came temples. 3. Invitations to Chinese Researchers During the first year of the project, Mr. Zhang Jianlin of the Shaanxi Archaeology Institute was invited to visit Japan from February 21 through March 11, 1999, and during the second year of the project, Mr. Wang Shihe of Xibei University was invited to Japan from November 16 through November 23, 1999. 4. Preparation of Research Report In addition to the presentation of a report on this research project to the Research Project, Grant-in -Aid for Scientific Research body, a joint Japanese-Chinese scholarly publication is also being considered and discussions are currently underway with publishers in China and other possible publication facilities.
A Synthetic Research about Art Objects of Chusonji-Temple in the "O-Shu" Cultural Area under the Fujiwara Clan

This synthetic research consists of three fields sculpture, painting and calligraphy, craft work. Concerning sculptures, we researched 46 items (26 sets) of Chusonji and Motsuji in Iwate prefecture and Miyagi, Akita and Yamagata prefecture. As a result of these studies, we can understand the following two points. Most of those were made of Katsura trees and by the technique of Ichiboku-zukuri (single wood-block construction) or Warihagi-zukuri (split-and-join method). The research of Ichiji-kinrin (Ekaksarosnisacakra) in Chusonji, now treated as the secret buddhist image, is also one of our excellent results. After investigation, we think of this image set as Ichiji-kinrin-mandara (Mandala of Mahavairocana of Golden Wheel). In the field of paintings and calligraphies, we researched 39 items of Chusonji. About Konshi-kinji-kyo (Sturas in Gold on Dark-blue Paper), we group those into three classes by judging those treatments of paintings. And we understand characteristics of conception about Shi-tenno (Four Guardian Kings) and thick coloring on dark-blue paper in Kinji-hoto-mandara (Chrysographed Sturas in Shape of Stupa). Then about craft works, we researched 53 items (44 sets) of Chusonji and Motsuji and can understand those high quality of technique, especially of metal works in period of Fujiwara clan. As mentioned above in detail, we can realize characteristics of art objects in "O-Shu" cultural area under the Fujiwara clan. And we think these characteristics are quite different from those of art objects in Kyoto under the rule of a cloistered Emperor.

本年度の研究計画にもとづいて以下の活動をおこなった。 1.画像データの活用に関する基礎的研究(画像データ研究班) 美術工芸品を撮影した4×5インチ・カラーポジフィルムを原稿にして(1)プロフォトCDマスターを作成し、前年度までに試作した(2)TIFF形式の画像と比較した。サンプル原稿として新写フィルムのほか、褪色フィルム(1955〜60ごろ撮影)を選び、解像度と画質にくわえ、補正可能な度合いなどを検討した。 (2)はJ-PEGなどの画像圧縮を併用すれば効率的に格納できる反面、元データを完全に復元できない欠点がある。(1)は圧縮効率に劣るが、欠落なく復元できる。また将来、A4判程度の図版印刷の原稿への使用を想定しているが、データの均質性保証の点で(2)は問題が残る。現状では(1)フォトCDマスターもっとも現実的な方式といえる。 2.システムの調査研究(システム研究班) 本研究所の情報資料部で運営しているデータベースを基本にして今後の発展方向をさぐったが、本年度はとくにインターネットへの参入が全所規模で実現したために、資料の共有化に向けた条件が整った。ホームページの作成など具体的な活用方法を検討することできた。また本年度は、本研究所の属する文化庁各機関でも電算化の本格的な利用が具体化された。このため、京都市埋蔵文化財研究所などの先行機関のほか、京都国立近代美術館・京都国立博物館をはじめとする所轄機関の進めているシステムの構想と概要について担当研究者と意見を交換することができ、大きな収穫を得た。

本研究は、請来美術を、美術表現に関わる情報を伝達する特有のメディアとしてとらえ、その機能を分析することを通して、日本における外来美術受容の構造を明らかにすることを目的とした。単年度の研究となったために、基礎資料の収集に重点をおき、あわせて、請来美術のメディアとしての機能を分析し、彫刻・絵画各領域におけるそれぞれの特性、両者の相互関係について考察した。 1、基礎資料の収集 (1)彫刻班清涼寺式釈迦像の伝来と日本における伝播に関する資料の収集。兜跋毘沙門天像(京都・東寺)、聖僧文殊像(東寺)、京都国立博物館及び大阪市立美術館に所蔵する中国彫刻を調査。 (2)絵画班アメリカ・ヨーロッパ所在の、日本より流出した、宋元仏画、高麗仏画に関する資料の収集。宋時代の阿弥陀画像に関する資料の収集。観経曼茶羅図(奈良・円照寺)、阿弥陀三尊図(愛知・西方寺)、釈迦如来図(兵庫・個人)の調査。研究成果の一部は、「宋時代の阿弥陀画像」という題で口頭発表した(1994年1月26日、於東京国立文化財研究所)。 2、メディアとしての特性請来美術に特有のメディアとしての特性は、美術作品という「モノ」に、さまざまな外来の情報が付帯していることにある。とくに仏教美術の場合は、それが絵画であれ、彫刻であれ、大陸伝来あるいは祖師請来という宗教像(イコン)としての正統性を保証する図像のみが抽出され、「唐本」・「宋本」として、日本で受容され伝播していく傾向が強い。しかしながら、イコンの正統性の保証は、造形の自由の否定を意味するものではなく、受容側の文化構造にしたがって、付帯情報がさらに強化・拡大される場合も少なくない。請来美術のメディアとしての特性を総合的に把握するためには、今後、個々の事例の蓄積とメディア論との整合性の検証、地域・時代による受容過程の差異などについて、考察をふかめることが課題として残された。

本研究は、視覚像(ビジュアル・イメージ)とコトバとの親和性,つまり両者は対立するものではなく,むしろ相互に補完するものであるという点を,ヨーロッパなど他の地域の美術にみられない東アジア美術の特徴のひとつと考え,具体的な作例に基づいてその特質の実態を明らかにし,あわせて視覚像・言語の比較研究のための一般問題・理論の提示を試みることを目的とした。先年度に実行できなかった関連作品の調査を行なった。主な調査作品を3つの代表的なタイプに分類すると以下のようになる。 1.視覚像・コトバを作品内部の構造にもつ例……絵巻(絵と詞),水墨画・肖像画(絵と賛),彫像と銘文など一枝希惟筆「山水図巻」(京都国立博物館),野泉筆「策彦還国図」(妙智院) 2.言語テキストを典拠とする視覚像……物語・説話・故事にもとづく画像と経典にもとづく宗教像「源氏物語色紙貼交屏風」(京都個人蔵) 3.生活空間のなかで伝承される視覚像……漆工,染織などの工芸品の文様・意匠「扇面草子」(高津古文化会館・京都個人蔵等) 最終年度にあたる本年度は,2年間の収集資料を整理し,まとめの作業にあたった。本研究では,今後の研究の見とおしをつけることはできたが,具体的な結論を提示するには至らなかった。本研究を基礎においた新たな研究が期待される。

本年度は昨年度から各地での調査を継続. 以下, 順に調査地及び調査作例をあげる. 1 仙台市博物館の協力を得て「みちのく名宝」展出陳の作品を集中的に調査, 主な作品は, 福島勝常寺広目天像, 山形慈光明院羅刹女像,慈恩寺伝阿弥陀如来像,岩手黒石寺僧形坐像,藤里毘沙門堂兜跋毘沙門天,天台寺聖観音象・十一面観音像等. 2.山形県寒河江市慈恩寺にて垣査を行う. 調査対象:三重塔大日如来,本堂普賢菩薩像,文殊菩薩像,十羅刹女,最勝老人,優庁王,仏陀波利属者,菩薩形坐像,聖観音像,聖徳太子像,阿弥陀如来立像,虚空蔵菩薩像,弥勒菩薩像. 3 福島県立博物館の協力を得て「会津の仏像」展出陳の作品を集中的に調査. 目な作品は, 名入観音堂木造天部形立像,定徳寺木造薬師如来坐像,薬王寺木造阿弥陀如来坐像,成法寺木造聖観王菩薩坐像,禅定寺地蔵菩薩坐像,泉福寺木造大日学来坐像等. 4.岩手県平泉町毛越寺本堂薬師如来坐像の調査. 5 岩手県宮古市周辺及び遠野市周辺の調査. 6 青森,北海道現存の円空仏を調査. 7 山形県米沢市内調査. 昌伝庵大日堂木造大日如来坐像,西明寺木造十一面観音坐像. 8 山形市内調査. 極楽寺木造阿弥陀如来坐像,誓願寺木造阿弥陀如来立像. 9 山形県朝日村薬師如来立像の調査. 以上の調査では, 各像の詳細な法量を測定し, 品質構造についてもできる限り明らかにした. また, 写真も能う限り豊富にモノクロ・カラーとも撮映して基礎資料の充実に努めた.
