Abstract The effect of 200 kHz ultrasound on scorodite synthesis at 70 °C and 3 h reaction conditions was investigated using sulfuric acidic solutions of various pH (3.0, 2.0, 1.5, 1.0, and 0.0). In contrast to the case of only O2 gas flow without ultrasound irradiation, oxidizing radicals generated by ultrasound irradiation promote Fe(II) oxidation in solution and precursor, allowing scorodite to synthesize with high crystallinity (>99%), which relates to low solubility, even in strong acid solution at pH 1.0. During synthesis, the particle shape was decided to be polyhedral or spindle type depending on the pH of 0.0–3.0. The spindle-shaped scorodite was probably formed by the reduction in precursor amount produced during the initial stage of synthesis. Furthermore, porous maghemite obtained by alkali treatment of scorodite showed initial discharge capacities of 146 mAh g−1 (polyhedron) and 167 mAh g−1 (spindle), indicating that its potential use as a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries.

    More details Close

We report the high-frequency properties of sub-micron-sized Fe-Co particles synthesized with a polyol process, and what influence hard magnetic and non-magnetic oxide layers had on those high-frequency properties. The Fe-Co particles exhibited a resonance peak in the range of a few gigahertz, and the resonance peak shifted to a higher region for decreasing particle size. Furthermore, the presence of a multi-resonance peak in the gigahertz range was recorded. The permeability of surface-oxidized particles decreased and the resonant frequency shifted to a higher region for increasing CoFe2O4 layer thickness on the surface of the particles. However, SiO2 coating did not influence the resonant frequency even though the permeability decreased due to the decrease in the volume fraction of FeCo particles in the sample.

Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements using synchrotron radiation and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation have been carried out for characterizing fine particles of ferric oxides including hydroxides and oxyhydroxides. A compact chamber was designed for SAXS measurements at BL15XU of SPring-8, Japan. SAXS profiles of reference particles of ferric oxyhydroxides, namely, α-FeOOH (goethite), β-FeOOH (akaganetite), and γ-FeOOH (lepidocrocite), obtained using the measurement system were compared with their morphologies observed by TEM. SAXS profiles of fine particles of ferric oxides, that were converted from condensed Fe(OH)3 gel to β-FeOOH and α-Fe2O3 by aging, were also measured. While TEM observation provided information on the characteristic microstructure of well-crystallized fine particles of ferric oxides in a selected area of a sample, information regarding fine particles including poorly crystallized ferric oxides in the entire sample was obtained by SAXS measurements. The SAXS and TEM results indicated that the addition of foreign anions of sulfate or silicate to the gel delayed the conversion processes of the gel to β-FeOOH and α-Fe2O3. A combination of SAXS measurement with TEM observation and X-ray diffraction measurement is shown to be effective in the characterization of fine particles of different iron oxides, which are formed by aging in aqueous media. In order to understand codeposition in Mo-Ni alloy electroplating, we studied the environmental atomic scale structure around metallic cations in aqueous solutions for electroplating using anomalous X-ray scattering (AXS) and EXAFS. The size of complex ions in aqueous solutions was also estimated by applying small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and the distribution of chemical species in solutions was obtained from multivariate analysis of visible absorption spectra. The results of AXS, EXAFS and SAXS indicate that a solution containing molybdate involves a isopoly-molybdate anion consisting of seven edge-shared MoO6 octahedra and a solution added nickel sulfate quite likely involves a heteropoly-molybdate anion formed by six edge-shared MoO6 octahedra surrounding a nickel. On the other hand, linkages of octahedra in the heteropoly anion are broken when citrate is added to the Mo-Ni solution. From the multivariate analysis of visible absorption spectra, we found that addod citric ions form new complexes with Mo as well as Ni in aqueous solutions. Thus, disconnection of relatively large complex appears to be essential for the codeposition process as Mo-Ni alloy, and citric ions also play an important role in this electroplating.

The distribution of zinc cation between crystallographically nonequivalent positions in ZnFe204 has been determined by anomalous X-ray scattering near the Zn K absorption edge. Measured intensity ratio with two energies close to the edge can be quantitatively explained only by assigning all zinc cations to the tetrahedral position in the approximately cubic close packed array of oxygen ions. A similar conclusion has also been reached for ZnxFe3-xO4 solid solutions with x=0.73, 0.54 and 0.35 employing the improved X-ray method. This is consistent with the EXAFS results which indicate an almost unchanged environmental structure around zinc cation in these solid solutions.

Tourmaline is unique among gem minerals in occurring in shades of all colors. In this study, local structure around Mn in rubellite from Mogok Myanmar and cuprian elbaite from Dos Quintos Brazil is analyzed by XAFS (X-ray Absorption Fine Structure) measurements. The energy of the K-absorption edge for present elbaite samples is similar to that of MnO, by suggesting the overall preference of Mn2+. The first nearest neighbor distance of Mn-O pair is about 0.22nm, which also suggests the local structure around Mn2+.

Stratified materials are defined as materials with nano-sized stratification that have been artificially controlled and designed. They are exemplified as a thin layer or stacked layers formed on surface of semiconductors. The present research is aiming at formation of controlled and designed stratification on surface of fine particles, leading to improvement of properties of fine particles which has been difficult to accomplish through the conventional particles engineering, and to development of novel properties created by the stratification.<BR>Here, we describe the method of the development of the nano-size CdS catalyst with stratified structure that efficiently separates electron and hole during photolysis, especially, to produce hydrogen gas from hydrogen sulfide, H2S. Furthermore, as an approach for the development of the practical use photocatalyst, ZnS-carbon nanotube complex was also made and examined. In a way, the stratified structure is considered to enable the production of a reaction system which simulates function in biological cells. Using this catalyst in the solution mixed with various materials such as, calcium hydroxide, seawater and H2S, we succeeded in producing about 7.5l/h m2 of hydrogen gas under the sunlight.

Iron is one of the important components in most of metallurgical slags. Since the oxidation state of iron (Fe2+/Fe3+) affects the physical and chemical properties of the slags, it is important to develop the methodology to evaluate the oxidation state of the iron for the molten slags. The present study has tested the applicability of the Raman spectroscopy to determine the oxidation state of the iron in alkaline-earth iron silicate glasses and melts. It is found that Raman spectroscopy is an appropriate technique to determine the iron oxidation state when the coordination number of Fe3+ is close to four.

In order to remove impurities such as arsenic from natural ores, a separation process using the mechanochemical effect of grinding operation was developed. The grinding conditions in ball milling were optimized, and a highly efficient method for arsenic separation was developed by combining dry and wet grinding. The arsenic in the ore changed from sulfide to oxide by grinding, and became easily leachable into water, which made it possible to separate it by washing. It was found that dry grinding was effective in oxidizing near the surface of the ore, on the other hand, wet grinding was effective in oxidizing the inside of the ore.

For the reuse of tantalum, which is one of the rare metals, the purpose of the present study was analysis of the environmental structure around tantalum during molten salt electrolysis to obtain basic knowledge for formation of smooth electrodeposition and construction of energy saving process. In order to establish an environmental structure analysis method, the analysis method of distribution and complex structure was developed using iron (III) chloride complex in hydrochloric acid aqueous solution. It has been found that the addition of chlorine to the molten salt affected the coordination of fluorine, which has a stronger electronegativity, and facilitated electrodeposition of tantalum. Furthermore, it was found that electrodeposition can be performed at 600 °C., which is a lower temperature than the conventional process. On the other hand, smooth electrodeposition attained only 20x10-6 m thickness, suggesting that a promoting action such as stirring would be required.

The purpose of this study was to obtain fundamental knowledge leading to the establishment of the technique of refractory metals recovery from molten salt with electroplating by comparing the local structure in the molten state with the results of the electrolytic recovery experiment. The relationship between the molten salt composition and the melting temperature and the local structure was investigated and clarified based on the data obtained by the in-situ measurement in the high temperature molten state mainly applying X-ray absorption spectroscopy. It has been found that, by using a molten salt of mixed halide composition in which a part of the low melting point fluoride is substituted with chloride, a large structure is decomposed and metal can be recovered even under relatively low temperature conditions.

The single particle nanofabrication technique (SPNT) is useful technique to fabricate the uniform polymer nanowires using the high energy ion beam. This study aimed to create functional nanomaterials combining both polymer nanowires fabricated by SPNT and metal nanoparticles. We also suggest new method to form organic-inorganic composite nanowires, which polymer nanowires having reactive side groups are used as a platform for metal nanoparticle formation, and stimuli-sensitive smart materials and catalytic nanowires were successfully fabricated. The hybrid nanowires combined Au nanoparticles and gel nanowires exhibited reversible absorption peak shift responded to external stimuli. polycarbosilane nanowires decorated with Pd nanoparticles realized high catalytic activity for the CO oxidation.

The objectives of this study were (1) to synthesize the adsorbent particles of iron oxide with high specific surface area, (2) to obtain the high adsorption of arsenate ion in aqueous environment, and (3) to test a possibility on development in efficiency of arsenate desorption by applying magnetic field to the system. As a result, the objectives (1) and (2) were achieved. However, for the objective (3) it was remain a problem in the desorption efficiency due to almost no liquid flow from inside to outside in the pore of adsorbent particles.

The element-selective structural analysis methods were used to characterize the local structures in several phosphate compounds with the NASICON-type structure. They are promising materials for lithium ion batteries, as they reveal superior charge-discharge characteristics. The chemical state in Li2NaV2(PO4)3 samples of a candidate cathode during the charge-discharge was analyzed by using X-ray absorption spectroscopy. X-ray anomalous scattering was used to analyze the middle-range order structure in NASICON-type glass-ceramics, which are utilized as electrolytes in solid state batteries. Influences of foreign elements on the local structure around aluminum and phosphorus in these samples were also analyzed by NMR. These results were discussed coupled with their electrochemical properties.

Fe-Ni hydroxide nanoparticles with Fe compositions ranging between about 10 and 90 at% were successfully synthesized using polyol by adjusting reaction conditions. Subsequent reduction-annealing of the above polyol-derived particles with 13-56 at% Fe at 400°C resulted in the synthesis of fcc Fe-Ni alloy nanoparticles. The Fe composition of fcc Fe-Ni alloy nanoparticles was evaluated to be close to those of Fe-Ni hydroxide nanoparticles before reduction annealing. In addition, it was suggested that Fe-Ni alloy nanoparticles with L10-type structure is obtained by reduction annealing of Fe-Ni hydroxide nanoparticles with about 51 at% Fe at 300°C.

The porous iron oxide particles developed by novel liquid phase reaction process were applied to the hazardous chemical species removing and useful chemical species recovering from environmental or industrial water using adsorption-desorption system. As synthesized porous iron oxide particles did not have enough magnetic property for increasing the desorption efficiency due to the quite small particle size. We found out the effect of after heat treatment under reductive atmosphere on growth of the particle size and transition of iron oxide phase from maghemite to magnetite. It was confirmed that the heat treated particles generate heat and increase the water temperature. The adsorbent particles showed significant difference in the desorption efficiency of arsenic between under with and without applying an alternating magnetic field.

The local structure around germanium of LiGe2(PO4)3 with the glass and the natrium super ionic conductor (NASICON)-type glass ceramic was investigated. While the X-ray absorption near edge structure spectra at the Ge K absorption edge of the glass ceramic indicated a distinct peak with a shoulder at higher energy sides, the glass exhibited a broad spectra. In the radial structure function obtained by Fourier transform of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure oscillation, the Ge-O correlation peak of the glass was observed at the shorter distance in comparison with that of the glass ceramic. These results suggest that the local structure around germanium in the glass is different from that of the glass ceramic composed of the GeO6 octahedral units.

Several kinds of Fe-Mn based alloys reveal twinning-induced plasticity and stress-induced martensitic transformation by deformation at room temperature. The deformation processes in these polycrystalline alloys showing unique shear deformation were investigated by the stress analysis of local area in the polycrystalline alloys using synchrotron radiation diffraction and the finite element simulation considering anisotropic elasticity. Furthermore, the texture of iron-based shape memory alloys is controlled by compression at high temperatures. The shape recovery of the alloys was shown to be improved by the texture control. Regarding the deformation characteristics of these alloys, the residual stresses in two-phase iron-based alloys and the stress distribution in the alloy with large anisotropic elasticity were studied. It was indicated that the anisotropic elasticity is an important role in polycrystalline iron-based alloys.

The porous particles of maghemite are synthesized from hydrated iron arsenite and hydrated iron phosphate particles such as scorodite, strengite and metastrengite. Such particles are candidates of arsenic adsorbents, because these exhibit large specific surface and superior filterability. In this study, arsenic adsorption and arsenic desorption properties were investigated under different solution conditions. The arsenic adsorption capacity was increased with decreasing pH. The arsenic adsorbed on porous particles was desorbed by the immersion in an alkaline solution. In addition, the arsenic desorption was accelerated by the immersion of a metallic iron plate. Such behavior is attributable to the decrease of electrical potential in the solution.

The porous particles of maghemite were prepared from iron phosphate particles by a novel method using alkaline solution, and then these were immersed in a solution containing Co. The Co adsorbed porous particles of maghemite showed superparamagnetic behavior. The superparamagnetic blocking temperature of these particles was increased by the annealing. In addition, the results of X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements showed that the local structure around Co in the Co adsorbed porous particles after annealing is very similar to that of CoFe2O4. Consequently, Co in the Co adsorbed porous particles after annealing probably locates at the cation vacancy site of maghemite.

FePt nanoparticles composed of crystalline fcc-FePt alloy phase and poorly crystallized Fe- and Pt-oxide phase were synthesized in polyol solution. In X-ray diffraction patterns of the specimens which were heat-treated at temperatures above 573 K in a mixture of 5%H_2 in Ar, diffraction peaks corresponding to superlattice lines of L1_0 type structure were observed. It is highly probable that such disorder-order transformation of FePt nanoparticles is accompanied by compositional homogenization due to the reduction of the poorly crystallized Fe- and Pt-oxide phase. It was also shown that intermediate fine particles precipitated in poyol solution containing Fe and Ni salts were reduced during post-annealing in a mixture of 5%H_2 in Ar. Such technique is useful to synthesis FeNi alloy fine particles over a wide composition range.

Research plan was founded on the basic research to develop techniques to synthesize highly crystalline nanomaterials for energy and environmental related applications. We synthesized highly pure copper oxides(CuO、Cu2O)nanoparticles for photoelectric conversion and confirmed their semi-conductor properties. We also constructed Cu2O:C60solar cells and evaluated their photo efficiency. We also developed techniques to synthesize Fe-Pt and Ni-Pt nanoparticles as catalytic electrodes for fuel cells. We demonstrated that Fe-Pt nanoparticles with fct crystalline structure on activated carbon could be used as an alternative candidate for Pt in PEFCs. Furthermore, Ni95Pt5and Ni90Pt10performed comparably with Pt particles in hydrogenation reaction, in spite of low Pt concentration. Finally, we also developed techniques to synthesize Fe-Co and Fe-Ni particles as electromagnetic wave absorbers and antenna material, respectively, and measured their high frequency properties. Fe-Co exhibited particle size dependent resonance peak in the range of a few GHz. On the other hand, Fe?Ni alloy nanoparticles, synthesized by hydrazine assisted polyol process, exhibited shape dependent low magnetic lossinthe MHz region.

Olivine-type LiFePO_4 is one of the promising cathode materials for Li-ion batteries, but the relationship between its electrochemical properties and structure is unclear. In this study, LiFePO_4 particles were synthesized through liquid and solid processes, and their charging/discharging properties and the Fe chemical state were investigated In-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Fe-K edge for obtaining the chemical variation of LiFePO_4 particles during charge/discharge cycles. The chemical state of Fe in LiFePO_4 particles has been found to correlate with the charging and discharging process. The effect of heat treatment was examined with respect to the structure and electrochemical properties of LiFePO_4 particles prepared by the polyol process. The appropriate heat treatment showed the improvement of their charging and discharging capacity.

Ferrous Fe(II) ions and ferric Fe(III) ions dissolved in aqueous solution are precipitated as polycations during corrosion of metallic iron, by which corrosion products are formed. In these processes, iron oxyhydroxides and oxides with complicated structure are formed. In this work, the EXAFS and quantitative X-ray diffraction methods were systematically used for characterizing influences of foreign ions on the short range and middle range ordering of their iron compounds. In addition to these experiments, reaction conditions of the aqueous solution were also analyzed using electrochemical potential and pH measurements, in order to clarifying the formation conditions of these iron compounds. In this works, green rust containing ferrous ions was specially synthesized, which was oxidized to iron oxyhydroxides and oxides under controlled conditions such as temperature. The results showed that the transformation from green rust to different iron oxides and oxyhydroxides strongly depend on reaction conditions such as temperature rate and pH of aqueous solution. In addition, X-ray anomalous scattering measurement of solid particles was carried out in order to investigate an influence of foreign cations such as manganese on the structure of iron oxides. This result indicated that manganese was almost equally distributed to different sites in the spinel structure of magnetite. Furthermore, the short range and middle range ordering the atomic arrangements of iron oxyhydroxides, which were oxidized with foreign anions was also characterized. Foreign ions like silicate ions were considered to be incorporated into the solid particles during structural changes of GR, by which the structure was distorted. As a result, foreign anions are likely to induce the distortion of the atomic arrangement by their incorporation, and this appears to cause not only the morphological changes and also properties of particles such as ion selectivity.

This project aims to establish spin-selective XAFS spectroscopy as a method of characterizing the magnetic and electronic structure of magnetic nano-particles. Here it is necessary to develop high-resolution x-ray spectrometers with large acceptance in order to measure generally weak Kβ-emissions of 3d elements. In 2005, our own dispersive-type spectrometer was modified for detecting Kβ-emissions, and was utilized for observing resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) of several standard materials to deduce their spin-selective XAFS. Through these measurements, it has been achieved to ultimately suppress lifetime-broadenings, and to obtain polarized spin-selective XAFS for single-crystal of LaMnO_3. On the other hand, it has been found that magnetic nano-particles are unstable for incident x-rays produced by synchrotron sources. The instability made it difficult to precisely obtain the spin-selective XAFS of the particles. Thus, in 2006, a focusing-type spectrometer was made by rebuilding the dispersive-type spectrometer, and was named as 'Peacock' after its shape. By using the 'Peacock', lifetime-broadening-suppressed XAFS spectra of CuO nano-particles on ZnO with various Cu concentrations up to as low as 1 mol% were obtained from their RIXS. Similar experiments for a basic high-Tc system, La_<2-x>Sr_xCuO_4 (LSCO) reveal that 1s-3d excitation of LSCO is very sensitive Sr-concentration and polarization. After these preliminary studies to demonstrate the high-sensitivity of 'Peacock', spin-selective XAFS spectra of magnetic nano-materials of several Fe oxides were measured within fairly short periods. Here almost no radiation-damage was distinguishable. Based on the data obtained, papers are now in preparation.

The purpose of this study is to create Passive Remediation Soil (PRS), which has a function to prevent spreading contamination with automatically by analyzing the ability of natural attenuation which is from the effect of clay minerals, metallic minerals and metals in the soil. In a study of last year (2005), the effectiveness of using metal iron as PRS for resolving volatile organic (chlorine) compounds in the soil was confirmed. However, it shared that there was when, at the same time, the VOC (volatile organic compounds) resolution action of metal iron was remarkable and fell by quality of soil. It was thought as the cause that some ingredients of soil origin became a disincentive. We investigated the reaction with soil elution ingredient and iron powder this time. As the result of this experiment, under a specification condition, this phenomenon was confirmed that anions ions such as Mg^<2+> or Ca^<2+>, which were soil elution ingredient, and SO_4^<2->, which was an elution ingredient from iron powder or soil, were connected and formed the coat of hardly soluble compounds on the iron powder surface. The salts break off the contact of the iron powder surface and ground water. Because resolution mechanism of VOC was dechlorination by battery reaction at the iron powder surface, it was considered that the coat of hardly soluble generated on the iron powder surface obstructed the VOC resolution of iron powder. It is revealed that the specification condition happened in the marine sediment clay layer. In addition, using high concentration heavy metal solution, I performed basic adsorption examination to the soil. At the result, it was confirmed that by a difference of weathering degree, there is a difference in quantity of heavy metal adsorption to the soil. Therefore we made the soil which controlled weathering degree using hydrothermal reaction artificially. A change of quantity of heavy metal adsorption was confirmed. With the loam soil given hydrothermal reaction under the condition of volcanic glass changing into allophane, the quantity of lead adsorption from the solution which includes high concentrate lead was about 100 times larger compared with one before hydrothermal reaction enforcement. It was confirmed that the quantity of adsorption rose by artificial weathering. From the above-mentioned findings, by having been able to get various knowledges necessary for making of PRS to relate to movement and the resolution of a pollutant in the soil, the condition setting was enabled according to a kind of factories and geographical area, which should be performed nonproliferation.

This year, we concentrated our research on the following topics aiming the accomplishment of solar energy conversion system (SECS) 1.Development of highly efficient photocatalyst- This year, we succeeded in scaling up the photocatalyst synthesis process (developed last year) to obtain necessary quantity of CdS particles for efficient SECS. As a consequence, this year' s research was focused on the development of a photocatalytic cell that utilizes hydrogen sulfide (H_2S) dissolved in alkaline solution as raw material and separate the hydrogen evolved effectively. 2.Removal of by-products evolved during reaction- When H_2S is photosplit, besides hydrogen, sulfur clusters (SC), which hinders the reaction is also produced as a by-product. Thus, a physical separation process based on electron transfer characteristics was developed to recover SC without degrading the reactants in the system. In this process, fullerene (C_<60>), which stably disperses in highly alkaline conditions, was used as an electron donor. When fullerene was introduced into the yellow colored suspension dispersing SC, the suspension turned colorless instantaneously. Furthermore, sulfur (S) recovered by heat-treating sulfur-contained fullerene was used for the preparation of the raw material to produce H_2S. 3.Reproduction of hydrogen sulfide from recovered sulfur Though circulation of sulfur was attempted by treating the same with water under hydrothermal conditions until last year, reproduction of H_2S using sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) was attempted this year. As a result, we succeeded in the production of biogas containing 15 % of H_2S, which is equivalent to methane fermentation. 4.Enrichment of hydrogen sulfide Since the H_2S produced by treating sulfur with SRB is associated with large quantities of methane and carbon dioxide, solid and liquid absorbents based enrichment technology was developed to obtain nearly 100 % H_2S. Solar energy conversion system was accomplished by carrying out the above researches.

In the present recycling process of waste glass, the waste glass are triturated to make glass cullet, which are useful as glass bottle raw materials, and then are recycled. Recently, the glass cullet utilization ratio has increased to about 80% because local communities have made positive efforts to fractional recovery. However, there is about 400,000 tons of unused glass cullet a year, and another serious problem is the handling of ultrafine glass powder that are yielded as residual-products by the trituration of the waste glass. For the above reasons, it is necessary to think up other ways to use the glass cullet and the glass powder besides glass bottle raw materials. In this research, we have been studying with a goal of producing artificial rocks, which are available as building materials, from the glass cullet or the glass powder by application of hydrothermal hot pressing. Hydrothermal hot pressing readily produces a sintered material at low temperature (below 300℃), so the methods is possible at reduced cost and environmentally-friendly. We investigated the velocity of hydration and the crystallization behavior in a piece of broken glass that was treated by hydrothermal hot pressing process. The morphology of the affected layer on the surface of the products was analyzed by SEM, XRD, IR, and etc. Then, we had basal knowledge for solidification of the waste glass powder under hydrothermal conditions. Furthermore, the same analysis of the products from the glass powder also gave us another basal knowledge about the reactivity difference between in the glass cullet and in the glass powder. When the sintering technology at low temperature by hydrothermal hot pressing was applied to the waste glass powder, the solidified substances with the very high tensile strength were able to be produced.

In this project, the synthesis of magnetic metal and alloy nanoparticles by using the chemical method called "polyol process" was investigated in detail. The reaction parameters such as type of polyol, synthesis temperature, metal ion concentration, reaction promoting agents, and nucleating agents were effectively utilized to control the reaction kinetics to obtain magnetic nanoparticles with required physical properties such as size and crystal structure. This paved the way for the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles with varying magnetic properties. For example in the cases of transition metal nanoparticles such as cobalt and nickel, the synthesis of particles with diameters ranging from few micron to few tens of nanometer and varying crystal structures was realized. For example, the bulk cobalt is known to have fcc phase at temperatures as high as 421.5℃. However, the cobalt metal particles synthesized using the modified polyol process were found to posses fcc structure at micron size levels. When the reaction kinetics was enhanced, the particle size was reduced to submicron and even to few tens of nanometer. Along with size reduction, the crystal structure also changed from fcc at micron size range, coexistence of fcc and hcp in the submicron size range and to s and hcp cobalt at nanometer size range. On the other hand, we also succeeded in the synthesis of non-magnetic hcp-Ni nanoparticle of few tens of nanometer in diameter. In the case of the synthesis of magnetic alloy nanoparticles for magnetic recording, we have successfully demonstrated the direct synthesis of L1_0 FePt nanoparticles at low temperature of 553 K using "modified polyol method" without subsequent annealing, whose diameter is 5-10 nm and the intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy field (H_k) is 31 kOe. This indicates that precise control of the reaction kinetics, especially low reduction rate through optimizing the polyol/Pt salt mole ratio and type of polyol are very important for directly synthesizing the L1_0 FePt nanoparticles. CoPt nanoparticles with high magnetocrystalline anisotropy and also particle sizes of 7 nm in diameter were prepared by using the modified polyol process. Furthermore, we also succeeded in selectively fixing FePt and CoPt nanoparticles on a silicon substrate by using APTS as the coupling layer, which prevents the grain growth even at higher annealing temperatures. Though the presence of the highly anisotropic phases was identified the potential of the particles were well below the anticipated values. Although the successful fabrication of recording media using magnetic particles for portable compact memory was not realized, considerable information and knowledge related to both the synthesis of nanoparticles and the fabrication of nanoparticle monolayer film was gathered. Thus, using this information as the base, we will work towards the development of high-density recording medium.

Fluorescent radiations emitted from a certain point in a sample are focused by diffracting on the inner surface of a cylindrically bent single crystal. Using this fundamental principle, an X-ray microanalyzer has been developed. Three important study results contribute to the present development. (1) First of all, a new fabrication technique of a cylindrical bend graphite single crystal with a large curvature is essential in order to effectively collect fluorescent radiation from a sample. In the present study, the cylindrical graphite with a curvature radius of 2l.07mm was produced by the new fabrication process developed by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (2) Secondarily, an XMA apparatus consisting of a sealed X-ray tube, sample holder, the bend graphite monochromator and an imaging p]ate as a two dimensional detector was designed so that the best suited performance is expected. (3) Thirdly, a computer program for image data processing based upon the maximum entropy principle was developed to improve a special resolution of the observed image. From the above results, the present XMA apparatus has been developed. In the present circumstances, the best spatial resolution that has been achieved in the present XMA is about 0.1 mm. This is about 10 times larger than the common XMA apparatus using electron convergent beams (EPMA) and about one tenth of the ordinary X-ray fluorescent analyzer. In addition, it takes a quite long time for the image data processing by the present program. We must improve its algorism for better performance. In spite of the worse spatial resolution, the pres t system can be applied to some materials which are not measured by EPMA, such as wet materials, melts, some biomaterials. Consequently, we will develop the present XMA as the complimentary method of EPMA as well as improve it for a better performance.

The soot as products of arc-discharge using carbon rod electrodes contain the various carbon cluster materials extractable by organic solvents and unextractable due to strong interaction between these and remaining fullerene soot. The extractable carbon clusters are relatively stable. Therefore, it is concerned that the carbon clusters having interesting properties exist in the unextractable materials. In this project, we had researched the synthesis conditions to obtain the soot containing large amount of exotic carbon clusters, the synthesis and the separation of the fullerene-oxide dimer or the small fullerenes, and the high-yield synthesis and the purification of the carbon nanotubes. We found that the yield of carbon clusters was deeply related to the synthesis conditions such as pressure in the arc-discharge chamber, atmospheric gas, or magnetic field. In the study for synthesis of the fullerene-oxide dimer, we succeeded to establish the synthesis process of fullerene oxides, the dimerization process, and the purification and separation process. We also have made an attempt to synthesize small fullerene like a C_<36>, to extract and separate from the soot, and the dependence of the shape conditions in the chambers. In the study of the synthesis and the purification of carbon nanotubes, we studied the control of the state of arc-plasma in order to improve the yield of carbon nanotubes and to control the size of them. As a result, we found that the growth rate was depended on the density of carbon radical in arc plasma and it can be controlled by application of magnetic field.

The purposes of this research project are the synthesis of photocatalyst can convert from the solar-energy to the chemical energy and the environment conservation through the redox reactions of sulfur compounds in aqueous solutions. We had succeeded to synthesize the photocatalysts of metal sulfide semiconductors with high-efficiency of hydrogen generation. The photocatalysts were synthesized from metal oxides or hydroxides as starting material. Our photocatalysts synthesized by a novel wet-reaction process have the "stratified" structure composed by nano-crystals. In this project, we had researched the relationship between the stratified structure and the photocatalytic activity of the energy conversion. It was found that the stratified-semiconductors formed capsule with a thin layer by ultra fine particles and maintained a potential gradient within this layer, from the results of the morphology observation by transmission electron microscope and the analysis of elemental distribution in the semiconductor particle by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. We can consider that the effective separation of the photoexcited electron and the hole was due to the potential gradient created by the stratified structure. We also researched the studies to establish the reaction system using sea water and sulfur compounds. As a result, we succeeded recovering of various metal ions as sulfides and found the possibilities of removing of harmful heavy metal ions and recovering of useful noble metal ions from sea water. We applied the synthesis process of stratified material to various compound semiconductor materials considered they can use visible region of sunlight. As the results of experiments, we found the stratified-CdS was obtained. These stratified-CdS particles can generate about 7 litters/hour to 1 m^2 of sunlight irradiation.

The application of photocatalytic reaction to generate hydrogen as a source of energy is being given higher priority in photochemical research. However, the prevention of re-association of the excited electron and the hole within the catalyst has been considered difficult and considerable researches are in progress. We had succeeded to synthesize the ZnS photocatalyst with high-efficiency of hydrogen generation under UV-light irradiation. The stratified-ZnS is synthesized by a novel wet-reaction process from ZnO or Zn(OH)_2 as starting materials and has the "stratified" structure composed by nano-crystals. In this project, we had researched the relationship between the stratified structure and the photocatalytic activity. It was found that the stratified-ZnS formed capsule with a thin layer by ultra fine particles and maintained a potential gradient within this layer, from the results of the morphology observation by transmission electron microscope and the analysis of elemental distribution in the semiconductor particle by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. We can consider that the effective separation of the photoexcited electron and the hole was due to the potential gradient created by the stratified structure. We also applied the synthesis process of stratified material to other compound semiconductor materials considered they can use visible region of sunlight. As the results of experiments, we found the stratified-CdS was able to synthesize from CdO or Cd(OH)_2 as starting materials by the same process in ZnS with optimized conditions. These stratified-CdS particles have photoactivity toward visible light less than 510 nm in wavelength and can generate about 7 litters/hour to 1 m^2 of sunlight irradiation. As the next step for practical application of the hydrogen generation system using the sunlight, we will carry out a research about a sulfur-recycle process by using biochemical or hydrothermal reaction, and so on.

In this work, we carried out to research to produce and purify good quality single wall carbon nanatubes. The main objective of this work was to control the arc plasma using the magnetic field and synthesis nanotubes with controlled morphology. Furthermore, the SWNTs synthesized were purified using hydrothermal treatment, which was already developed by us. Final aim of this research was to develop a comprehensive methodology for the production of highly pure (above 99%) single wall SWNTs in large quantities. In the year 2000, SWNTs synthesis conditions were optimized in the arc-discharge chamber designed and manufactured in the year 1999, and evaluated the quality and condition of purified SWNTs using transmission electron microscope, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometer, etc.. Furthermore, a modified version of the arc-discharge chamber was designed and manufactured to enable experiments under strong magnetic fields (max. 5 Tesla). As a consequence, information related to the growth mechanism of tubes was acquired. And also, SWNTs were synthesized in a magnetic field as strong as five tesla for the first time. Based on the above research findings, we succeeded in the synthesis and purification of SWNTs and supply quality SWNTs to other groups. As a result, we contributed to the property evaluation and application oriented research fields of this special research project.
