    Abstract In advanced applications such as aerospace and space exploration, materials must balance lightness, functionality and extreme thermal fluctuation resistance1,2. Shape-memory alloys show promise with strength, toughness and substantial strain recovery due to superelasticity, but maintaining low mass and effective operation at cryogenic temperatures is challenging3–6. We hereby introduce a new shape-memory alloy that adheres to these stringent criteria. Predominantly composed of Ti and Al with a chemical composition of Ti75.25Al20Cr4.75, this alloy is characterized by a low density (4.36 × 103 kg m 3) and a high specific strength (185 × 103 Pa m3 per kg) at room temperature, while showing excellent superelasticity. The superelasticity, owing to a reversible stress-induced phase transformation from an ordered body-centred cubic parent phase to an ordered orthorhombic martensite, allows for a recoverable strain exceeding 7%. This functionality persists across a broad range of temperatures, from deep cryogenic 4.2 K to above room temperature, arising from an unconventional temperature dependence of transformation stresses. Below a certain threshold during cooling, the critical transformation stress inversely correlates with temperature. We interpret this behaviour from the perspective of a temperature-dependent anomalous lattice instability of the parent phase. This alloy holds potential in everyday appliances requiring flexible strain accommodation, as well as components designed for extreme environmental conditions such as deep space and liquefied gases.

    Objective: Evaluate the efficacy of a new orthotic-made super-elastic alloy brace to correct hallux valgus (HV) deformity.Methods: Five female patients diagnosed with HV deformity wore the newly developed orthotic daily for six weeks. The orthotic wasdeveloped using a super-elastic alloy brace to correct great toe lateral deviation, first metatarsal medial deviation, and fixation belts.The correction was evaluated by measuring the load at which the big toe begins to move and the distance moved by 15 gf force whenpulled from the side. Results: The orthotic was worn by all patients without causing any sleep disruptions. In the initial state, a strong force was required to move the big toe, but after two weeks, it was significantly improved to be mobile in all patients. Conclusion: The developed HV orthotic has a high wearability without causing pain or discomfort. Long-term use can provide a consistent and continuous correction force to the big toe, resulting in the successful release of the big toe metatarsophalangeal joint contracture within two weeks.     Abstract Crystalline metals can have large theoretical elastic strain limits. However, a macroscopic block of conventional crystalline metals practically suffers a very limited elastic deformation of &lt;0.5% with a linear stress–strain relationship obeying Hooke’s law. Here, we report on the experimental observation of a large tensile elastic deformation with an elastic strain of &gt;4.3% in a Cu-based single crystalline alloy at its bulk scale at room temperature. The large macroscopic elastic strain that originates from the reversible lattice strain of a single phase is demonstrated by in situ microstructure and neutron diffraction observations. Furthermore, the elastic reversible deformation, which is nonhysteretic and quasilinear, is associated with a pronounced elastic softening phenomenon. The increase in the stress gives rise to a reduced Young’s modulus, unlike the traditional Hooke’s law behaviour. The experimental discovery of a non-Hookean large elastic deformation offers the potential for the development of bulk crystalline metals as high-performance mechanical springs or for new applications via “elastic strain engineering.”

    The demand for biomaterials has been increasing along with the increase in the population of elderly people worldwide. The mechanical properties and high wear resistance of metallic biomaterials make them well-suited for use as substitutes or as support for damaged hard tissues. However, unless these biomaterials also have a low Young's modulus similar to that of human bones, bone atrophy inevitably occurs. Because a low Young's modulus is typically associated with poor wear resistance, it is difficult to realize a low Young's modulus and high wear resistance simultaneously. Also, the superelastic property of shape-memory alloys makes them suitable for biomedical applications, like vascular stents and guide wires. However, due to the low recoverable strain of conventional biocompatible shape-memory alloys, the demand for a new alloy system is high. The novel body-centered-cubic cobalt-chromium-based alloys in this work provide a solution to both of these problems. The Young's modulus of <001>-oriented single-crystal cobalt-chromium-based alloys is 10-30 GPa, which is similar to that of human bone, and they also demonstrate high wear and corrosion resistance. They also exhibit superelasticity with a huge recoverable strain up to 17.0%. For these reasons, the novel cobalt-chromium-based alloys can be promising candidates for biomedical applications.

    Shape memory alloys recover their original shape after deformation, making them useful for a variety of specialized applications. Superelastic behavior begins at the critical stress, which tends to increase with increasing temperature for metal shape memory alloys. Temperature dependence is a common feature that often restricts the use of metal shape memory alloys in applications. We discovered an iron-based superelastic alloy system in which the critical stress can be optimized. Our Fe-Mn-Al-Cr-Ni alloys have a controllable temperature dependence that goes from positive to negative, depending on the chromium content. This phenomenon includes a temperature-invariant stress dependence. This behavior is highly desirable for a range of outer space–based and other applications that involve large temperature fluctuations.

    Experimental works were done to assess the seismic behavior of smart self-repairing concrete beams reinforced with newly developed Cu-Al-Mn superelastic alloy (SEA) bars in combination with epoxy network system. SEA reinforced concrete (RC) beams demonstrated strong capability of recentering with comparable normalized strength and ductility compared to conventional steel RC beam specimen.Self-repair network applied on pre-tested SEA-RC beam showed complete healing of previous cracks confirmed by origination of new cracks on reloading.

    The microstructure and superplastic behavior at 450℃ and 500℃ were investigated using optical microscopy and a tensile test in Cu-Al-Mn-Ni shape memory alloy. It was found that a fine α(fcc) + β(bcc) two-phase structure with grain size of 3μm in diameter can be obtained by annealing at 600℃. The flow stress of the Cu-Al-Mn-Ni alloy is dependent on both the strain rate and the test temperature where the strain rate sensitivity is over 0.3 which exhibits superplasticity with the elongation of over several hundred percents. For the test temperature at 500℃ and the strain rate of 5×10^<-4> sec^<-1>, the maximal elongation of 1150% was obtained.

    Martensitic transformation and superelasticity in Pd-In-Fe alloys were investigated. Pd-In-Fe alloys show martensitic transformation from a Heusler-type L2_1 ordered bcc phase to a 2M-type DO_<22> structure. It was confirmed from compressive test and three-point bending test that an almost perfect superelastic effect accompanying the stress-induced martensitic transformation can be obtained. Since high corrosion resistance and specific gravity are expected in these Pd-based shape memory alloys (SMAs), the present alloys are potentially applicable for medical devices.

    Cu-based shape memory alloys (SMAs) of the Cu-Zn- and Cu-Al-based systems are commercially attractive for the manufacture of practical applications based on the shape memory effect (SME) and superelasticity (SE) because of their low cost compared with Ti-Ni (Nitinol) SMAs. However, conventional polycrystalline Cu-based SMAs are too brittle to be sufficiently cold-worked, which restricts the attainable SE strain to only about 2%. During the last decade, we have developed ductile Cu-Al-Mn-based SMAs with excellent shape memory properties. However, the Cu-Al-Mn-based SMAs show low fatigue strength. In the present study, effect of ageing treatment on the mechanical properties for the Cu-Al-Mn-based SMA was investigated by tensile testing. It was seen that the yield stress and the tensile strength of the Cu-Al-Mn-based SMA drastically increase with the ageing without the associated loss in the superelasticity.

    Nitinol shape memory alloys (SMAs) are attracting considerable attention as core materials for medical guidewires because of their excellent flexibility and shape retention. However, since Nitinol guidewires possess low rigidity, the pushability and torquability of the guidewires are insufficient. On the other hand, although stainless steel guidewires have high pushability, plastic deformation easily occurs. We have developed a new class of superelastic guidewires with functionally graded properties from the tip to the end by using new SMA core materials such as Cu-Al-Mn-based or Ti-Mo-Sn SMAs. The tip portion of the guidewire shows excellent superelasticity (SE), while the body portion possesses high rigidity. These functionally graded characteristics can be realized by microstructural control. These guidewires show excellent pushability and torquability and are considerably easier to handle than conventional guidewires. Moreover, a metallic catheter using a Ni-free Ti-based SMA with high biocompatibility is introduced.

Therefore the requirement for heat resistance is increasing for materials used for springs in automobile exhaust system because the exhaust gas temperature becoming higher.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Co-W-Al alloys precipitation-strengthened with the γ&#039; phase have good high temperature strength and considered to have potential for higher temperature application than conventional Ni base super-alloys.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;However, for coil spring application, materials must have enough workability in hot and cold roll to make coil wire. In order to enhance hot workability and high temperature mechanical properties, Ni and Cr were added and the optimization was performed in the chemical composition of Co-Ni-Cr-W-Al alloy. In this article, optimization of chemical composition, and relaxation property of coil spring of the developed &quot;COWALOY&lt;sup&gt;®&lt;/sup&gt;&quot; are reported.&lt;/p&gt;

    Co-base superalloy has been generally strengthened through solid solution hardening and/or carbide precipitation hardening because dominant L12-γ' phase has not been found as like L12-Ni3Al, which has been major strengthening phase for Ni-base superalloy. However, recently, γ'-Co3(W,Al) was found in Co-W-Al ternary alloy. Thereby new γ' strengthening Co-base superalloy is expected. In this work, properties of four kinds of γ' strengthening Co-W-Al alloys with the amount of γ' phase from 20 % to 50 % on calculation were investigated and the following results were obtained. (1) High temperature ductility was decreased and flow stress was increased with increasing γ' phase forming elements which were W, Al and Ta. Excessive additions of γ' phase forming elements degraded the high temperature ductility drastically due to the precipitation of μ phase. (2) γ' solvus temperature and nose temperature of peak aging hardness shifted to higher temperature by increasing γ' phase forming elements. The alloy with 40 % γ' phase showed adequate hot workability possessed 360 HV as peak aging hardness around 1073 K. (3) The oxidation resistance of alloys with 5 mol% Cr was improved by increasing Al content up to 9 mol%. However it is insufficient in order to form the homogeneous protective scale layer of Al2O3 and Cr2O3 at 1273 K.

    各種合金における定圧比熱を緩和法、熱流束法により精密に測定し、母相とマルテンサイト相のエントロピー差を求めることを目的として実験を行った。モデルケースとしてFe-Ni二元系合金のFCC-母相とBCC-マルテンサイト相の比熱測定を行った。はじめに、Ni濃度とマルテンサイト変態温度、磁気変態温度の関係を電気抵抗や振動型磁力計を用いて詳細に調査し、熱的なマルテンサイト変態が生じる臨界組成を決定した。臨界組成近傍の組成を有する母相合金、マルテンサイト相合金を準備し、各相の比熱を測定してエントロピー差を決定した。さらに、DSCにより変態潜熱を求め、仮定した散逸エネルギーを用いることで変態の駆動力を推定し、比熱やエントロピー差が妥当であることを検証した。DSCで検出された変態に伴う反応を、冷却中その場光学顕微鏡観察と加熱中その場EBSDの解析結果を対応させて考察し、マルテンサイト逆変態中の組織変化と温度の関係を把握することができた。

    高確率で発生が危惧される巨大地震に対し、建造物の機能維持は最重要課題である。課題解決に向けたキーマテリアルとして、本研究では鉄系・銅系超弾性合金の単結晶大型部材を開発する。大変形後も荷重を除くだけでヒステレシスを描き変形回復する超弾性合金を建造物に適用し、地震中の最大変形に加えて地震後の残留変形を抑制することで、地震後の継続利用や超早期復旧が可能になる。さらに事業化に向けた出口戦略として、市場ニーズが高い鉄筋コンクリート橋脚と木造住宅の耐震補強への適用性を実証する。これらを通してwith/postコロナの災害対策で問題となる「医療物資・患者の搬送路確保」や「密となる避難生活の回避」に貢献する。

    状態図:今年度は、Cr-Ta二元系、Cr-Si-Ta三元系状態図の実験的決定とCALPHAD法による熱力学解析を行った。Ta含有試料の熱処理は酸化の影響を受けやすく、熱処理時に利用するセラミックス耐火物の選定を行い、アルミナよりもイットリアが適切であることがわかった。前年度に検討を行った超高温域におけるDTAによる熱分析、高周波誘導加熱炉と二色式温度計の組み合わせによる熱処理手法を基にし、Cr-Ta二元系の相平衡実験を行った。Taリッチ側で過去に報告のあった固相反応は酸化物の影響である可能性が高いことが判明し、新たにCr-Ta系状態図を決定することができた。また、Cr-Si-Ta三元系の1800℃、1400℃等温断面図決定のための相平衡実験を開始させた。さらにCALPHAD法による熱力学解析を実施し、Cr固溶体、ラーベス相、Ta固溶体からなる状態図を、正則溶体モデル、副格子モデルを採用して熱力学パラメータを決定することができた。これにより、実験状態図を計算により再現できることを確認した。 ミクロ組織制御と高温強度:Cr-X二元系、Cr-Si-X三元系合金を準備し、添加元素がミクロ組織と高温強度に及ぼす影響をSEMによる組織観察と1000℃における圧縮試験により調査した。特にTaは強度と延性の観点から有望であることがわかった。今後は、Cr3Si相とCr2Ta相の複層組織のミクロ組織制御と、耐酸化性を確保するために必要なSi量の特定を行うことが必要である。

    For the dilute solid solution alloys A-X (X: Au, Re and W), the direct observation of jumping process of the solute atoms was carried out by STEM-HAADF observation in different several scanning beam conditions. It was confirmed that the frequencies of atomic jump for these alloy systems are higher in the order of Au>Re>W and depend on the scanning rate and the beam intensity. This means that the atomic jump is excited by incident electron beam, not due to the regular diffusion. By precise analysis for the jumping behavior in the Re-doped alloy, it was clarified that the jump is isotropic in direction of every nearest neighbor site. The evaluation of solubility limit of solute element Au was performed by counting all the atomic positions in a fixed flame of the HAADF-STEM image. The obtained result was consistent with that estimated by electric resistant measurement.

    Recently, in the CoCrGaSi Hesler alloy system, an anomalous martensitic transformation (AMT), where the L10 martensite phase transforms again to L21 parent phase on cooling, have been found. Moreover, cooling-induced shape memory effect has first been reported by using the thermoelastic AMT. In this study, for the CoCrGaSi Hesler alloys, basic physical and superelastic properties were examined in order to clarify the origin of the abnormal phenomenon. Through this project, it has been suggested that its origin may be due to magnetic transformations in both the parent and martensite phases.

In the present self-repairing concrete, the cracks can be automatically or very easily repaired. We perform a number of experiments of the proposed composite material and structural systems to study the repairing capability, constructability, and structural performance. From the experimental results, we make chemical and mechanical models and prepare fundamental data necessary for material and structural design.

    Effect of liquid particles on grain growth in multi-phase structure was investigated. The following results were obtained. (1) The grain growth of monotectic-type Fe-Bi, Zn-Bi and Al-Bi alloys was retarted by the dispersion of liquid particles with the formation of precipitation-free zones (PFZs) and large Bi particles located on the grain boundaries. (2) The grain growth characteristics of the liquid Bi particles dispersion structure of the two-phase (ferrite ((α) + liquid or austenite ((γ) +liquid) and the triple-phase (α+γ+liquid) in Fe-Mn-Al-Bi alloys show that when the matrix in the two- or triple-phase structures was the α phase, the fine Bi particles were dispersed within the α grain together with the formation of PFZs, while the matrix in the two- or triple-phase structures was the γ phase, most of the Bi particles were basically located on the grain boundaries.

    The grain growth of beta(bcc) phase in Cu-Al-Mn base shape memory alloys has been studied. The abnormal grain growth was realized when the Cu-Al-Mn alloys were first quenched from the beta single-phase region at high temperature round 1173K and then was slowly cooled at about 773K, and subsequent heating to the beta single-region. The pseudo-single crystals due to abnormal grain growth were obtained by thermally cycling where beta phase leads to a precipitation and subsequent dissolution of the alpha phase. This abnormal grain growth phenomenon results from the formation of subgrain structure introduced through phase transformation, where the subgrain-boundary energy might be one of the driving force. These findings provide a method of fabricating a single-crystal or large-grain structure important for superelastic properties.

    To widely use friction stir welding (FSW) of steels and titanium alloys in the practical applications, fundamental knowledge on damage mechanism of welding tool during FSW and tool material factors governing tool damage attempted to be obtained. The suppression of the tool damage was achieved by both enhancement of high-temperature strength and distribution of large number of hard phases with average size of 2 to 5 micrometers. The tool material designed so as to meet these requirements exhibited 1.5 times longer tool life than the present tool material.

    従来の形状記憶合金は、温度変化により最大約10%もの歪を得ることができるが、材料の冷却速度によりアクチュエータの応答速度が律速され、他のアクチュエータ材料に比較して応答性に劣るという欠点があった。近年、強磁性形状記憶合金が見出され、世界的に注目を浴びている。この強磁性形状記憶合金は磁場によっても歪を制御でき,磁歪や電歪材料より10-100倍大きな歪が得られることから,新しいタイプの磁気駆動アクチュエータへの応用が期待されている.しかし、従来のMn-Mn-GaやFe-Pdなどの強磁性形状記憶合金は加工性に乏しいことや材料が高価であることが欠点であった。そこで、本研究では、冷間加工が可能で安価な強磁性形状記憶合金であるCo-Ni-Al合金について、磁気特性について調査を行った. Co-Ni-Al合金では、マルテンサイト相が母相に比較して結晶磁気異方性が大きく、強磁性状態ではマルテンサイト相の方が母相より磁化率が小さい.飽和磁化はマルテンサイト相の方が高い。このような挙動は、Ni-Mn-GaやNi-Mn-Al合金と同様である.しかし、マルテンサイト変態温度とキュリー温度が交差する組成範囲の場合、逆にマルテンサイト相において磁化率が高くなる.また、単結晶Co-Ni-Al合金において、0.06%の可逆的な磁場誘起歪が得られた.本合金系の磁気変態温度、及び、マルテンサイト変態温度は-150℃〜120℃まで制御することが可能であり、加工性やコストの面からも実用化が期待できると言える.
