    Far-ultraviolet radiation C light (far-UVC; 222 nm wavelength) has received attention as a safer light for killing pathogenic bacteria and viruses, as no or little DNA damage is observed after irradiation in mammalian skin models. Far-UVC does not penetrate deeply into tissues; therefore, it cannot reach the underlying critical basal cells. However, it was unclear whether far-UVC (222-UVC) irradiation could cause more biological damage at shallower depths than the 254 nm UVC irradiation (254-UVC), which penetrates more deeply. This study investigated the biological effects of 222- and 254-UVC on the small and transparent model organism Caenorhabditis elegans. At the same energy level of irradiation, 222-UVC introduced slightly less cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer damage to naked DNA in solution than 254-UVC. The survival of eggs laid during 0-4 h after irradiation showed a marked decrease with 254-UVC but not 222-UVC. In addition, defect of chromosomal condensation was observed in a full-grown oocyte by 254-UVC irradiation. In contrast, 222-UVC had a significant effect on the loss of motility of C. elegans. The sensory nervous system, which includes dopamine CEP and PVD neurons on the body surface, was severely damaged by 222-UVC, but not by the same dose of 254-UVC. Interestingly, increasing 254-UVC irradiation by about 10-fold causes similar damage to CEP neurons. These results suggest that 222-UVC is less penetrating, so energy transfer occurs more effectively in tissues near the surface, causing more severe damage than 254-UVC.

    The plastic deformation behavior of single crystals of two transition-metal diborides, ZrB2 and TiB2 with the AlB2 structure has been investigated at room temperature as a function of crystal orientation and specimen size by micropillar compression tests. Although plastic flow is not observed at all for their bulk single crystals at room temperature, plastic flow is successfully observed at room temperature by the operation of slip on {1[Formula: see text]00}<11[Formula: see text]3> in ZrB2 and by the operation of slip on {1[Formula: see text]00}<0001> and {1[Formula: see text]00}<11[Formula: see text]0> in TiB2. Critical resolve shear stress values at room temperature are very high, exceeding 1 GPa for all observed slip systems; 3.01 GPa for {1[Formula: see text]00}<11[Formula: see text]3> slip in ZrB2 and 1.72 GPa and 5.17 GPa, respectively for {1[Formula: see text]00}<0001> and {1[Formula: see text]00}<11[Formula: see text]0> slip in TiB2. The identified operative slip systems and their CRSS values are discussed in comparison with those identified in the corresponding bulk single crystals at high temperatures and those inferred from micro-hardness anisotropy in the early studies.

    Phase relationships of Mn-substituted Ru2Si3 with the chimney-ladder structure have been investigated by using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. A series of chimney-ladder phases Ru1-xMnxSiy are formed over a wide compositional range between Ru2Si3 and Mn4Si7. The c-axis dimension of the Si subcell increases with the Mn content accompanied with the increase in the Si/M ratio (y=Si/(Ru+Mn)). A large extent of compositional variation is observed in the directionally solidified chimney-ladder compounds. The interface between adjacent chimney-ladder phases with different Mn contents is considered to have no influence on the electrical properties but have some influence on the lattice thermal conductivity. The dimensionless figure-of-merit increases with the increase in the density of the interfaces.

    微小スケールで熱エネルギー輸送を制御するためには, 機械的駆動部を持たず簡便な方法で熱流を可逆的にオン/オフすることが可能な熱スイッチング機構が不可欠である.本研究では,ゲスト原子の局在フォノンエネルギー準位およびエネルギー分布と格子熱伝導率の相関を明らかにし,ゲスト原子を外場で操作することにより熱伝導率を飛躍的に変化させられる熱スイッチング材料の設計指針を得ることを目指す.一次元トンネル状骨格構造を有するイータ型鉄-アルミニウム系包接化合物は,ゲストアルミニウム原子の固体内拡散パスが存在し,ゲスト原子の脱挿入が容易であると考えられるためモデル材料として選定した.第一原理計算により得たフォノン分散関係を用いてKlemens-Callaway近似により見積もった格子熱伝導率の結晶方位依存性が,実験値と乖離することがわかり,トンネル構造内のゲスト原子振動の局在化に伴うバンドフラットニングによる群速度の低下だけではなく,ゲスト原子ポテンシャルの非調和性が大きく寄与していることを明らかにした.さらに,3次非調和項に相当するモードグリュナイゼンパラメータ,およびゲスト原子のトンネル軸方向およびその垂直方向の原子ポテンシャル曲線を第一原理計算により求めた結果,モードグリュナイゼンパラメータの結晶方位依存性はほぼ無いものの,原子ポテンシャルの4次項がトンネル軸方向に沿って相対的に大きいことが明らかとなった.これらのことから,鉄-アルミニウム系包接化合物の低い格子熱伝導率の主要因は,ゲスト原子の大きな4次非調和項であることが示唆された.

    The degree of solid solution strengthening in some high-entropy alloys and binary solid-solution alloys is positively correlated with the average atomic displacement of the constituent elements from the ideal lattice points. However, some binary alloys with short-range ordering are negatively deviated from the linear relationship between the degree of solid solution strengthening and the average atomic displacement derived by assuming a random solid solution, inferring that the short-range order softening could occur in those alloys unlike the traditional short-range order strengthening. We clarified that the degree of short-range ordering strongly affects the average atomic displacement by systematically performing first-principles structural relaxation, and explained the apparent short-range order softening phenomena in some binary solid solution alloys in view of the change in the average atomic displacement due to the short-range ordering.

    リチウムイオン電池などの一価キャリアイオンを使う蓄電池の物理化学機構はよく理解されているが,マグネシウムなどの多価イオンをキャリア(電荷担体)とする蓄電池系の基礎科学は殆ど未解明である.そこで本申請研究では,多価イオンをキャリアとして利用する蓄電池のための材料科学を確立し,一価および多価イオンが奏でるデュアルキャリアの協奏的相互作用の学理を構築することを目指した.これは,蓄電池分野のみならず,燃料電池固体電解質やイオン伝導体などの分野へも拡張される発展的なテーマとなり,本申請研究で明らかにしたい学術的な具体的問題を以下の通り掲げて遂行する予定であった 【課題1】 多価イオンを蓄電デバイスにおいてキャリアとするための機構・指針を得る. 【課題2】 デュアルキャリアが奏でる協奏的効果を明らかにする. 【課題3】 デンドライト組織の抑制機構とそこから逆に推定される形成機構を解明する. 以上の問題を解決することができれば,高エネルギー密度を有する新しい蓄電池を実現できる可能性は高いと考え,それに必要な装置や物品の購入を選定判別し,研究分担者,連携者と共に環境整備の準備段階にあった. しかし,基盤Sが採択になったため,この基盤Aをやむなく辞退することになった.それまでに購入した物品などは,基盤Sでも利用する事は可能であり,実際に基盤Aで利用するために,幾分かの利用は行った.その結果は,基盤Sにつながるものと期待している.

    In order to clarify the origin of the deformability of the brittle cementite phase in the pearlite microstructure, consisting of the cementite and ferrite phases, we have investigated the physical and mechanical properties of single crystals of the cementite phase in a confined volume, with the aid of microscale fabrication and testing techniques. We have elucidated that many slip systems are operative in the cementite phase even at room temperature via single-crystal micropillar compression. We have successfully determined some of the single-crystal elastic constants via inelastic X-ray scattering.

    We have validated the conjecture that the degree of solid solution strengthening in solid-solution alloys should be proportional to the average atomic displacement of the constituent elements by systematically performing first principles calculations to estimate the atomic displacement in (non-)equiatomic high entropy alloys as well as dilute and concentrated binary alloys whose strength has been reported as a function of solute concentration. We have found that the critical resolved shear stress normalized to the shear modulus is in direct proportion to the average atomic displacement normalized to the lattice constant for the investigated solid-solution alloys, indicating that the average atomic displacement can be a universal parameter for predicting the degree of solid solution strengthening regardless of the number of elements, alloy systems, and solute concentration level.

    Low-temperature deformability has been investigated for brittle hard materials that do not exhibit deformability at ambient temperature in the bulk form, by means of micropillar compression testing. Low-temperature deformability is observed for SiC, some MSi2-type and M5Si3-type transition-metal silicides as well as for a sigma-phase intermetallic, an embrittlement phase in steels. But this was not the case for some ceramics such as B4C and Al2O3. As the specimen size decreases, the stress exerted to the specimen approaches to the stress necessary to generate dislocations. But, if the fracture toughness is not sufficiently high, failure occurs before the stress reaches the level for dislocation generation. The low-temperature deformability is concluded to occur more easily for brittle hard materials with higher fracture toughness because of the smaller critical notch size.

    Although most pure metals such as aluminum, copper and so on are intrinsically ductile, they are known to become brittle when the crystal grain size is considerably reduced. It had remained an open question if these extrinsically brittle metals exhibit any specimen size dependence of strength and fracture toughness. In the present research, we have performed compression tests and bending tests for micrometer-sized specimens of nanocrystalline copper fabricated by pulsed electrodeposition. We have revealed that when the crystal grain size is reduced down to 34 nm, where the dislocation motion is difficult, the specimen size dependence of strength disappears in contrast to the coarse grained polycrystalline copper, and that the brittle fracture behavior, which is observed when the bulk nanocrystalline copper is bent, disappears and turns to be ductile when the specimen size is reduced to the micrometer size.

    Galvannealed (GA) steels have been widely used in the automobile industry because of their high corrosion resistance, weldability, and paintability. When GA steels are deformed under severe conditions such as press-forming operations, the coating layer occasionally fails by decohesion at the coating-substrate interface. However, the mechanism of the coating decohesion has not been clarified yet. In the present research, we have performed systematic compression deformation experiments of single-phase polycrystalline and single-crystalline micropillars and two-phase micorpillars with one hetero-interface of the five different intermetallic compounds in the iron-zinc system constituting the coating layer of GA steels. We have clarified the fundamental mechanisms of the deformation of the coating layer and proposed a guideline for improving the decohesion-resistance of the coating layer of GA steels.

    Intrinsic resistance of individual interface to propagation of plastic deformation has been deduced from micropillar compression tests made as a function of specimen size for micron meter-sized specimens that contain a single interface. Ni-base superalloys containing cuboidal L12 precipitates in the fcc matrix and TiAl/Ti3Al lamellar alloys containing stacked lamellae of these two phases are taken as examples for three- and two-dimensional interfaces. Intrinsic resistance of individual interface to propagation of plastic deformation are estimated to be 860 MPa for a Ni/Ni3Al interphase boundary in Ni-base superalloys, whereas it is estimated to be 120 MPa and 1200 MPa respectively for true-twin and pseudo twin TiAl interfaces in TiAl/Ti3Al lamellar alloys.

    The aim of the project was to improve thermoelectric properties of dual-phase inclusion compounds through the phonon scattering at the hetero-interfaces. In dual-phase ingots of Ba- and Sr-encapsulated clathrate compounds, the hetero-interface has an atomistically coherent cage structure with different encapsulated species. Investigation of the thermoelectric properties of the dual phase crystals gives signs of a property improvement compared to the monolithic compounds.

    The possibility for the improvement of thermoelectric properties of Ru silicide(Ru2Si3) has been investigated through controlling multimorphic nano-structures that are formed based on the variety of the arrangement of the Si sublattice. An attempt has also been made to establish a guiding principles for new materials search for better thermoelectric properties and the property improvement The multimorphic interface that is recently found to occur between a series of Chimney-Ladder compounds possesses an idealistic interface to scatter phonon but to transmit electrons, since the metal sublattice is kept the same across the interface but the periodicity of screw arrangement of Si atoms is different across the interface. The effectiveness of the multimorphic interface in improving the thermoelectric properties of Ru silicide-based materials was clearly shown by experiment.

    In this study, we demonstrate the efficiency as thermoelectric materials of off-stoichiometric oxide semiconductor in terms of electric and thermal conductivity. We succeed to obtain the value of dimensionless figure of merit to be 0. 3 in off-stoichiometric titanium oxide, that is quite large for ubiquitous oxides. The large value is due to a strong phonon scattering at crystallographic shear structure which is largely introduced by a thermal treatment.

    Phase relationships of manganese-substituted ruthenium sesquisilicide alloys have been investigated by using x-ray powder diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. A series of chimney-ladder phases Ru_<1-x>Mn_xSi_y are formed over a wide compositional range between Ru_2Si_3 and Mn_4Si_7. Directionally solidified chimney-ladder compounds in the Ru-Mn-Si system exhibit a microstructure containing columnar domains of different chimney-ladder phases with compositional interfaces between adjacent phases. Despite a compositional variation, the transition-metal (Ru/Mn) sublattice is continuous over the interface while the Si sublattice is discontinuous. The lattice thermal conductivity of the directionally solidified alloys along the transverse direction decreases by increasing the density of the compositional interfaces while the electrical properties are preserved.

    地球環境保全のためCO_2ガス排出量の削減に向け多くの取り組みがなされる中,自動車駆動電源としての水素エネルギーが注目されている.実用的には水素をより多く吸蔵する合金が必要であり,Mg系合金に研究が集中している.Mg系合金では,La-Ni系合金とハイブリッドな水素吸蔵合金を作製すると不均化反応が抑制でき可逆的水素吸蔵放出量を維持できたり,遷移金属との積層体で一連の不均化反応を利用して可逆的水素吸蔵放出量や水素化反応速度を増加させ,水素の放出温度を本質的に低下させる試みがなされていたりと,不均化反応が重要な役割を果たすことが明らかになりつつある.本研究では,不均化反応を促進あるいは抑制する因子を実験的,理論的に探求し,不均化反応を積極的に工学的に応用する方策を見出すことを目的とした.特に,純Mgの水素放出温度に及ぼす応力効果,RE-Ni-Mg(RE:希土類金属)系におけるハイブリッド化合物の不均化反応抑制機構を調べた.純Mgはその水素化物の解離温度が350度と高いが,解離時に応力が加わると解離温度が低くなるとの仮説のものと,熱力学的に解離温度-応力の関係を導き,これを実証した.実証では,計算に基づいて4GPaの応力下,270度で水素化物の解離を行わせ,X線回折により純Mgの体積分率が大きく増加することを見出した.RE-Ni-Mg系ハイブリッド化合物では,REとしてCeを添加するほど不均化反応が促進され,Niの代わりにCoを添加するほど不均化反応が抑制されることを明らかにした.不均化反応の促進,抑制は水素化物の生成エンタルピーの変化により熱力学的に説明でき,ハイブリッド化合物の電池としての応用上,重要な知見が得られた.

    (1)Type-Iクラスレート化合物Ba_8Ga_<16>Ge_<30>中のGaをInにより置換し,熱電変換特性を温度およびIn添加量の関数として測定した結果,6In添加材において無添加材の無次元熱電性能指数(ZT=0.49)の倍以上のZT=1.03という高い値を得た.構造解析を行った結果,この熱電変換特性の向上は,In添加による結晶格子中の3次元ケージ構造の変化と,In原子のケージサイトの占有挙動により説明することができた. (2)新規に合成した水素吸蔵Na-Si系およびK-Si系クラスレート化合物の構造解析を行い,水素吸蔵特性を決める因子である内包Na(K)原子サイトの占有率を,走査型透過電子顕微鏡(STEM)像強度から決定した. (3)赤外線検出器として利用されるII-VI半導体の人工超格子(HgTe/CdTe)をSTEMおよび電子エネルギー損失分光法を用いて解析することにより,新種の欠陥を発見した.その欠陥は,超格子成長時に格子ミスマッチにより導入されたフランク転位ループが上昇運動した後に残ったものと考えられ,原子拡散理論に基づいた欠陥生成メカニズムを提案した. (4)低ドースSTEM-HAADF(High Angle Annular Dark-Field)法によるサブナノメートルサイズの触媒クラスターの精密なサイズ分布測定法の開発を行った.低ドース電子線を用いることによりナノクラスターの振動を抑制する一方で,人工的な「ぼかし」を施してノイズを平坦化し,その他のあらゆる実験的な「ぼけ」の伝播を考慮することでクラスターのサイズ情報を得るという方法を考案した.この新規の方法を用いて,シグナル・ノイズ比の小さい低ドースSTEM-HAADF像から,Os_3(CO)_<12>(最大径:0.3nm)などの極めて小さなクラスターのサイズを正確に測定できることを実証した.

    実用熱電変換材料として有望視されているBa-Ga-Ge系type-Iおよびtype-IIIクラスレート化合物の詳細な結晶構造解析,および熱電変換特性の測定を行い,内包金属原子の熱振動挙動と格子熱伝導率低減に関する考察を行った.結晶構造解析には,SPring-8の放射光を線源とした粉末X線回折法を用い,電気抵抗率測定には四探針定常法を,熱伝導率測定には定常法とレーザーフラッシュ法を用いた. リートベルト解析を行うことにより,type-Iクラスレート化合物ではBa原子を内包している14面体ケージ構造がGa添加量の増加とともに一様に膨張するのに対して,type-IIIクラスレート化合物では,Ga添加に伴って変形12面体ケージ構造がx軸方向に伸び,異方的に変形することがわかった.スプリットサイトモデルを内包Ba原子サイトに適用することにより,type-Iクラスレート化合物では6dサイトから24jサイトに,y-z平面上で4つに分裂する一方で,type-IIIクラスレート化合物では12dサイトから24eサイトにx軸方向に2つに分裂することが明らかになった.この内包Ba原子サイトの分裂幅は,いずれの構造タイプにおいてもGa添加量の増加とともに増加し,それを内包している多面体ケージ構造の形状や大きさの変化に対応している.スプリットサイトモデルにより得られた内包原子サイトの分裂幅と格子熱伝導率の間に負の相関があることを見出し,内包原子サイトの分裂幅がその結晶ポテンシャルの非調和性に対応するパラメーターであることを明らかにした.スプリットサイトモデルを適用した結晶構造解析を行うことにより,その分裂幅から格子熱伝導率の低減を予測できることを提示した.
