Abstract This study elucidates the possibility of CO2 injection-induced formation of a complex cloud-fracture network (CFN) in granite, along with shearing (shear slip) of natural pre-existing fractures under conventional (~ 150–300 °C) and superhot (> ~ 400 °C) geothermal conditions, potentially providing additional connecting flow paths between the stimulated natural fractures. Here, we conduct a set of experiments under triaxial stress states at 150 °C and 450 °C on cylindrical granite samples containing a sawcut (representing a natural fracture) inclined 45° from the sample’s axis. CO2 injection induced dynamic shear slip on the sawcut, with higher slip velocities at 150 °C owing to the higher elasticity of the rock than that at 450 °C. The lower viscosity of CO2 also allowed it to more uniformly pressurize the sawcut, resulting in higher slip velocities and slip displacements compared with those based on water injection in the 150 °C experiments. This implies that under conventional geothermal conditions, CO2 injection can stimulate the same volume of rock as that of water injection at lower injection-well pressures. The CFNs then formed via CO2 injection at pressures similar to those predicted by the Griffith failure criterion as the sawcut shear slip progressed at both experimental temperatures. The experiments also revealed potential challenges associated with CO2 injection in naturally fractured geothermal environments, such as narrow aperture CFNs, owing to decreasing differential stress during their formation; all these factors should be addressed in future research.

<title>Abstract</title>Developing high-enthalpy geothermal systems requires a sufficiently permeable formation to extract energy through fluid circulation. Injection experiments above water’s critical point have shown that fluid flow can generate a network of highly conductive tensile cracks. However, what remains unclear is the role played by fluid and solid rheology on the formation of a dense crack network. The decrease of fluid viscosity with temperature and the thermally activated visco-plasticity in rock are expected to change the deformation mechanisms and could prevent the formation of fractures. To isolate the solid rheological effects from the fluid ones and the associated poromechanics, we devise a hydro-fracture experimental program in a non-porous material, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). In the brittle regime, we observe rotating cracks and complex fracture patterns if a non-uniform stress distribution is introduced in the samples. We observe an increase of ductility with temperature, hampering the propagation of hydraulic fractures close to the glass transition temperature of PMMA, which acts as a limit for brittle fracture propagation. Above the glass transition temperature, acoustic emission energy drops of several orders of magnitude. Our findings provide a helpful guidance for future studies of hydro-fracturing of supercritical geothermal systems.

A long-term monitoring of carbon dioxide (CO2) in a reservoir at depth is required for the geological storage of CO2. For this requirement, an inversion technique utilizing tilt data of the ground surface associated with migration of CO2 may be one of promising techniques. Poroelastic parameters of reservoir rocks (e.g., sandstone) should be well understood to increase reliability of the monitoring technique, because the inversion technique is based on the poroelastic theory. Better understanding of poroelastic parameters also contributes to geomechanical reservoir characterizations. For this purpose, focusing on a water-saturated part within a sandstone reservoir, a set of five kinds of laboratory tests has been conducted on Kimachi sandstone and Berea sandstone, saturated with water, to determine poroelastic parameters at various combinations of confining pressure (7-40 MPa) and pore pressure (5-25 MPa), namely various Terzaghi's effective stresses (2-35 MPa). Skempton's coefficient B and undrained bulk modulus have been determined by the B-test, in which volumetric strain and pore pressure changes with confining pressure. Drained bulk modulus and parameter H (inverse number of poroelastic expansion coefficient) have been determined by the P-test and the H-test, in which volumetric strain changes with confining pressure and pore pressure, respectively. Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio have been determined by both drained and undrained triaxial compression tests. Confining pressure and pore pressure dependencies for the poroelastic parameters have been examined separately, revealing that both dependencies may be integrated by Terzaghi's effective stress dependency. That is, every poroealstic parameter (y) having Terzaghi's effective stress dependency may be described by a function of Terzaghi's effective stress (σeff), y=a+b(1-e-σX(X=eff/10)), where a and b are constants. Additionally, it has been revealed that Biot-Willis (effective stress) coefficient of sandstone with swelling clays can exceed unity at relatively high Terzaghi's effective stresses.

Stress-measurement methods based on the overcoring method assume that the rock mass is linearly elastic, isotropic, continuous, and homogeneous. However, a rock mass is actually anisotropic to some degree. In this study, we carried out theoretical, numerical and experimental studies to apply the Downward Compact Conical-ended Borehole Overcoring technique to an orthotropic rock. Numerical experiments with the use of a 3D-FEM analysis were conducted to confirm the applicability and efficiency of the proposed measurement theory. The results showed that the measurement includes a non-negligible error if we do not consider the anisotropy of rock when such anisotropy is strong. For example, the isotropic assumption method gives an error of more than 20 % in the estimation of stress when the degree of anisotropy in the direction of the maximum applied stress exceeds 20 %. On the other hand, the error is less than 5 % in the orthotropic assumption method. Finally, laboratory experiments for four kinds of orthotropic rocks using a true-triaxial compressive apparatus were carried out to verify the efficiency of the proposed measurement theory. These experiments also verified that the proposed method is suitable for use in orthotropic rock.

To clarify the effects of the viscosity of the hydraulic fluid and the weak planes of the rocks on the fracture creation, the hydraulic fracturing experiments were conducted on 15 cm-cubic Inada granite and Ogino tuff with the fracturing fluids of water and the super critical carbon dioxide. The borehole was bored in the perpendicular direction of the rift or bedding planes. Two horizontal stresses of 5 and 3 MPa and the vertical stress of 1 MPa were applied to the specimens. The vertical single fracture along the borehole was created in the specimen by the injection of water, while multiple complicated fractures along the rift or bedding planes were tended to be created by the injection of the super critical carbon dioxide. The numbers of the fracture branches obtained for the super critical carbon dioxide were greater than those obtained for the water. These results suggest that both the viscosity of the hydraulic fluid and the weak planes of the rocks significantly influence the formation of hydraulic fractures.

Based on the empirical formula proposed by the authors for estimating the hydraulic aperture of a single fracture, the hydraulic conductivity of a fracture with an arbitrary direction under rock stress and pore pres-sure at depths of 500 m, 1000 m and 2000 m was estimated for an arbitrary direction of fluid pressure gradi-ent. The parameters necessary for determining the hydraulic aperture and the mechanical properties of the fracture were determined from previous experimental and analytical results for a tensile fracture created in Inada granite in the laboratory. The mean aperture of the fracture is mainly governed by shear dilation, and there is a ridge of the local maxima in the mean aperture in the stereographic projection of the normal direc-tion of the fracture, which is parallel to that in the shear stress but inclined toward the minimum principal stress. The mean aperture is maximum for the fracture with the normal direction that lies in the maximum principal stress - the minimum principal stress (σ1 - σ3) plane with an inclination angle of 20° to 33° from σ3 for all stress conditions used in this study. The fracture with the maximum hydraulic aperture for a given di-rection of the fluid pressure gradient has a normal direction at which the angle between the macroscopic wa-ter flow and the shear displacement is maximum nearby the ridge of the local maxima in the mean aperture. Thus, the normal direction of the fracture with a large hydraulic aperture is distributed around that of the fracture with the maximum mean aperture and is extended along the ridge of the local maxima in the mean aperture. The maximum hydraulic aperture is produced in the fracture with the maximum mean aperture when the pressure gradient is given in the direction of the intermediate principal stress (σ2), and this fracture has the normal direction within the σ1 - σ3 plane with an inclination angle of 6° to 13° from the normal direc-tion of the fracture with the maximum ratio of the shear stress to the effective normal stress.

Based on the viscoelastic behavior of grain boundaries, we proposed a new mechanism for rock damage induced by stress relief. In this mechanism, the normal and shear stiffnesses of grain boundaries change with geological time so that the state of stress becomes more uniform, and elastic response of the grain boundaries during stress relief produces tensile residual stress that induces damages in rock. The residual stress was determined with finite element method for three specimen models of polycrystalline rock in a general state of compressive stress, and the degree of damage and the crack density were estimated according to the extended Coulomb criterion to compare the results with the assumptions in the differential strain curve analysis (DSCA) for determining rock stress. The damages are induced only for the grain boundaries having a normal direction that is not much deviated from the directions of the principal stresses with the maximum value. As a result, the maximum crack density increases with the maximum principal stress, while the intermediate crack density does not always increase with the intermediate principal stress and furthermore, the minimum crack density decreases with the minimum principal stress, which does not agree to the assumptions in DSCA. However, the directions of all the principal crack densities approximately coincide with those of the principal stresses for about half of all possible regime of compressive rock stress when the mean stress is large, since the principal crack densities are indirectly determined from the principal strains that are determined by the contribution of all intergranular cracks including those inclined from the principal stresses. Although the assumptions in DSCA are not supported by the mechanism proposed in this study, there is a stress region for which both the magnitudes and directions of the principal stresses can be accurately estimated from those of the principal crack densities and this region becomes wider as the mean stress increases with depth.

Using joint elements for a mechanical model of grain boundaries, we performed a preliminary 3D finite element analysis of uniaxial tensile fracture for specimen models of monomineral polycrystalline rock under the assumption that fracturing occurs only at the grain boundaries. The specimen models were created on a computer by the method previously proposed by the authors, and the constitutive law of the grain boundaries was derived by applying the associated flow rule in the plastic theory and a tension-shear-softening curve to an extended Coulomb criterion. Tensile fracturing initiates at grain boundaries with a small angle of the normal direction relative to the loading axis, which are followed by grain boundaries with a larger angle of the normal direction. Unloading of intergranular cracks occurs before the peak strength when the intergranular cracks do not compose the final failure plane that is completely formed near the inflection point of the axial stress-axial strain curve after the peak. During the completion of the final failure plane, the conversion of failure mode from tension to shear occurs at intergranular cracks that have a large angle of the normal direction relative to the loading axis. For these intergranular cracks, the axial displacement given at an end of the specimen is converted to a shear displacement, rather than an opening displacement, and the normal stress becomes to be compressive due to shear dilation. Furthermore, the number of tensile intergranular fracturing at the peak strength increases with a decrease in the constant α that characterizes the rate of decrease in the tensile strength in the tension-shear-softening curve of the grain boundaries, and as a result, the tensile strength of the rock specimen increases with a decrease in the constant α. However, the effect of the residual frictional coefficient is small and limited to the stage after the final failure plane is completely formed, since the residual friction coefficient affects the mechanical behavior of the grain boundaries only after the failure plane is completely formed.

In this study, we developed a method for creating on a computer a specimen of polycrystalline rock composed of monomineral, and using joint elements with normal (kn) and shear (ks) stiffnesses for the intergranular cracks, 3D finite element analysis was performed for the mechanical model of the polycrystalline rock in uniaxial compression to estimate the elastic properties and the stress distributions in the intergranular cracks. The effective Young's modulus of the polycrystalline rock is mainly governed by kn of the intergranular cracks and increases with kn, while the effective Poisson's ratio is mainly governed by the ratio of the shear stiffness to the normal stiffness (ks/kn) and increases with a decrease in ks/kn. As the ratio ks/kn decreases, the shear stress in the intergranular cracks decreases and the normal stress in the intergranular cracks with a large inclination angle relative to the loading axis increases in tension while that with a small inclination angle increases in compression. Thus, the normal and shear stresses in the intergranular cracks deviate more from the values in a homogeneous body as the ratio ks/kn decreases. Furthermore, it was found that the normal and shear stresses in the intergranular cracks that penetrate the upper and lower end surfaces, where the boundary conditions of displacement are given, are much smaller than those in other points, since the relative displacements in such intergranular cracks are constrained by the boundary conditions of displacement.

In-situ stress measurement by means of the Downward Compact Conical-ended Borehole Overcoring (DCCBO) technique, which one of the overcoring method, was carried out at Kamaishi mine to aim at practical use of this technique. Prior to in-situ stress measurement, measuring apparatus (conical bit, strain cell insertion tool and data logging equipment built-in tilt-azimuth meter) for HQ-size borehole were developed by improving apparatus for PQ-size borehole. Then, the measurement method based on the determination of strain coefficients depending on the estimation of the elastic properties of the adhesive under in-situ measured temperature was proposed.<BR>Performing in-situ tests, we verified that improved measuring apparatus for HQ-size borehole works well in a water-filled vertical borehole. Moreover, it was confirmed that the proposed measurement method could estimate the in-situ stresses relatively consistent with those by other measurement method near this test site. It was concluded that in-situ stresses measured by the proposed measurement method have sufficient reliability.

A shear-flow test under constant normal stress to clarify anisotropic and heterogeneous water flow of a rock fracture was carried out using a true triaxial compression test apparatus. The main results in this study can be summarized as follows:<BR>1. The hydraulic conductivity in rock fracture shows remarkable anisotropy and heterogeneity with increase of shear displacement due to the formation of both channels and ridges. This anisotropy becomes more remarkable with shear displacement. However, hydraulic conductivity of whole flow area is not influenced by this anisotropy.<BR>2. Spatial distribution of the aperture during shearing plays an important role in anisotropy of hydraulic conductivity of the fracture.<BR>3. In this study, the hydraulic aperture eh is almost constant until the shear displacement is 13.4 mm, and decreases dramatically when the shear displacement exceeds 13.4 mm. It was considered that water flow was inhibited since contact stations of the aperture are enlarged and localized as shear displacement increases. Moreover, it was clarified that an accumulation of gouge which was produced by shearing becomes an important factor of dramatic decrease of hydraulic conductivity.

By performing experiments in the laboratory, we verified how the measuring accuracy of the Downward Compact Conical-ended Borehole Overcoring (DCCBO) technique is affected by the time dependence of the mechanical characteristics of an adhesive to bond the strain cell together. In order to quantify the mechanical characteristics of the adhesive by the correct evaluation of experimental results, we determined the strain coefficients using numerical model including models of adhesive and strain cell.<BR>Consequently, we found that the best evaluation of experimental results measured two hours after affixing the strain cell, was achieved when Young's modulus was 1.45 MPa and Poisson's ratio was 0.00. We also demonstrated that proposed method was capable of highly accurate rock stress evaluation.<BR>Performing in-situ tests, we clarified the requirements for the general characteristics of the adhesive and the strain cell (epoxy section). Young's modulus of adhesive and strain cell (epoxy section) should be set to about 100 MPa for moderately hard or hard rocks having a Young's modulus of about 10 GPa or greater and to about 10 MPa for soft rocks having a Young's modulus of about 1.0 GPa.

Accurate determination of rock stresses at great depth is one of the most important subjects that should be resolved in the fields such as deep geological disposal of nuclear fuel waste and underground sequestration of carbon dioxide. To determine complete three-dimensional in situ stress at great depth with a high accuracy, the Downward Compact Conical-ended Borehole Overcoring (DCCBO) technique, which is one of stress relief methods, was developed. DCCBO technique can be applied to a water-filled vertical/sub-vertical borehole. The main features of this technique are as follows: <BR>1) This technique is applicable to a water-filled borehole by using an appropriate adhesive.<BR>2) A diving-bell-type bonding device keeps a strain cell dry until the moment of installation.<BR>3) Just before the strain cell reaches the bottom of the borehole, high-pressure nitrogen gas cleans the borehole bottom, where cuttings may exist.<BR>4) The process described above proceeds within a PQ bit which overcores the strain cell.<BR>5) The data during the overcoring is recorded by a multi-channel data logger which is installed at the top of the strain cell.<BR>6) A system consisting of a small video camera and compass for single shots measure the direction of the strain cell.<BR>In laboratory test, a measuring system consisting of a bonding device, a cleaning system and a multi-channel data logger were verified to work well in a water-filled borehole with cuttings on the bottom. Reasonable results were able to be obtained by measurement sensitivity test using a specimen of rock block. Thus, we confirmed the usability of DCCBO technique.

Core discing occurs due to tensile stress induced by boring within or below a core stub. To determine effects of the length of core on the magnitude and direction of tensile principal stress, a finite element analysis was carried out for an HQ core with different lengths for 77 in-situ stress conditions. We analyzed the semi-axial tensile principal stress, which is inclined from core axis by less than 45&deg;, and the maximum semi-axial tensile stresses were determined with respect to the core axis for each position of the cross-section of the core. The minimum value and the mean inclination relative to the core axis of the maximum semi-axial tensile stresses were analyzed to determine the stress condition under which core discing is likely to occur. As a result, 30 in-situ stress conditions were identified as the stress condition under which core discing is likely to occur and the necessary condition for the in-situ stresses was proposed. The critical tensile stress, which is the maximum tensile stress that can produce a tensile fracture propagated throughout a cross-section, was analyzed for these stress conditions and a new criterion for core discing, which can be applied to any length of core, was proposed. Stress conditions estimated by the criterion were consistent with previous experimental results for a long core and for discs with small thickness. According to the criterion, the relationship between the length of core and the in-situ stress necessary for core discing was discussed, which showed that the stress field can be divided into three regions and that core discing with small length mostly occurs at great depth. The relationship between the length of core and the thickness of disc was determined by assuming that the position of a fracture is given by the mean position of the maximum semi-axial tensile stresses. Theoretical estimation reproduced previous experimental results on the effects of stress magnitudes on the thickness of disc.

An analysis of tensile principal stress below an HQ core stub was carried out with a finite element method for eleven lengths of core in 25 stress conditions under which core discing is likely to occur. The direction of the semi-axial tensile principal stress, which has an inclination angle relative to the core axis of less than 45°, was analyzed in detail for the central part of the core. Based on the results, a method for estimating three-dimensional directions of in-situ stress from the height at the periphery of the end-surface of a disc was proposed. Main results obtained in this study are summarized as follows:<BR>1) The direction of the semi-axial tensile principal stress is fairly uniform in a wide area of the central part of the core and does not depend on the length of core appreciably. Accordingly, the direction of the semi-axial tensile principal stress is considered to govern the geometry of the end-surface of a disc.<BR>2) The azimuth of the semi-axial tensile principal stress in the central part of the core approximately coincides with that of the minimum principal stress, while the inclination relative to the core axis (φm) is smaller than that of the minimum principal stress (φ3). A method for estimating φ3 from φm was proposed, which gave an error of less than 25 %.<BR>3) When the difference between the normal stresses perpendicular to the core axis (σx-σy) is great, a saddle-shaped disc is formed and the shape becomes more distinct with the increase in the stress difference. However the saddle shape becomes less distinct as the length of core decreases.<BR>4) By assuming that the end-surface of a disc is inclined in the direction of the semi-axial tensile principal stress in the central part of the core, a method for estimating three-dimensional directions of in-situ stress from the height at the periphery of the end-surface of a disc was proposed.

The permeability of a fracture may decrease with time due to time-dependent closure under in-situ normal stress. Estimation of the long-term permeability of a fracture is necessary for designing facilities for nuclear waste disposal and geothermal energy extraction. In this study, by using specimens of a hollow cylinder, which contained a hydraulic fracture perpendicular to the axis, the changes with time in the closure and permeability of the fracture under constant normal stress were measured for normal stresses of up to 25 MPa for granite and up to 15 MPa for sandstone. The power spectral density of the aperture showed that the fractures used in this study had the surfaces strongly correlated to each other. Main results obtained in this study were summarized as follows:<BR>1) The time-dependent closure increased to be constant at 50 to 70 hours for the both rocks. The ultimate time-dependent closure did not depend on the normal stress when the elastic closure curve obeyed the Goodman's formula as for granite, while it increased with the normal stress when the elastic closure curve did not obey the Goodman's formula as for sandstone. The difference in the elastic closure curve between the two rocks was due to that in the increase rate of the contact area, which was related to the initial part of the cumulative probability distribution function of the aperture.<BR>2) The hydraulic aperture decreased with time to be constant at about 50 hours for the both rocks. The hydraulic aperture was very small, 2.2 to 3.5 μm after the elastic closure and was finally 1.3 to 1.8 μm. The larger the initial hydraulic aperture was, the more the hydraulic aperture decreased with time. The ultimate hydraulic aperture was 40 to 75 % of the initial value.<BR>3) The hydraulic aperture did not decrease according to the Darcy's law with the time-dependent closure for the both rocks. The decrease in the hydraulic aperture was small in comparison with the increase in the time-dependent closure. This was because the fractures used in this study were all well mated and, accordingly, the contact between the two fracture surfaces was developed well.

The maximum tensile stress experienced by an HQ core in an arbitrary horizontal cross section was accumulated in equal area stereonet for 77 stress conditions. The maximum tensile stress accumulated for a central area of the core (57.1 % of the total area) was concentrated in a certain direction, which was nearly the direction of the minimum principal stress σ3, for all stress conditions except those in which σ2 = σ3. Based on the assumption that a penny shaped crack is produced normal to the maximum tensile stress at each point of a horizontal cross section in proportion to the magnitude, the crack density in the core was analyzed by calculating strains under hydrostatic pressure as in Differential Strain Curve Analysis (DSCA). The direction of the maximum crack density was similar to that of the accumulated maximum tensile stress. Thus, the direction of the maximum crack density obtained by DSCA predicts the direction of the minimum principal stress rather than that of the maximum principal stress, if the distribution of pre-existing microcracks before stress relief is isotropic and if additional microcracks are produced by merely the tensile stresses during boring under in-situ stresses. <br> To verify this, the crack density was measured by DSCA for two cores of quartz diorite, which were taken by overcoring when a hemispherical ended borehole technique, one of stress relief method, was applied to measure in-situ stresses at Kanetsu tunnel. The direction of the maximum crack density obtained by DSCA was nearly that of the minimum principal stress for both cores.<br>

Three-dimensional in-situ stresses in a hard limestone lying about 700 m below the surface were estimated by five core-based methods (ASR, DSCA, PSHA, DRA and AE method) and a stress relief method (Conical-ended borehole method ; CEBM). The confidence intervals of the results by CEBM were estimated, and then, the results by the core-based methods were compared to those by the CEBM to examine the reliability of the core-based methods for this particular rock. The ASR method was difficult to estimate reliable in-situ stresses in this hard limestone whose Young's modulus ranged from 40 GPa to 80 GPa. A more accurate measuring system was required to apply ASR method to such a hard rock. The DSCA (OC), the PSHA and the DRA (Δεmax )(ε) method estimated the in-situ stresses relatively consistent with those by the CEBM. The agreement of the results by both the conventional DRA and the AE method with those by the CEBM was poor for the rock.

Compression and Brazilian tests were carried out under confining pressure without sealing the specimen in order to know the effect of pore water pressure on the strengths of Ogino tuff and Kimachi sandstone. Main results are summarized as follows: (1) The maximum differential stress and tensile strength of Kimachi sandstone when load was applied immediately after setting confining pressure were almost the same as those of under atmospheric pressure. On the other hand, the maximum differential stress and tensile strength of Ogino tuff increased with confining pressure. (2) Unconfined tensile strength of Ogino tuff was not influenced by the confining pressure which was applied and unloaded before the test. Namely, the increase in tensile strength of Ogino tuff, described in (1), was not due to permanent change of the microstructure. (3) In the case of Ogino tuff, the maximum differential stress decreased with the exposed time of confining pressure, and the tensile strength approached to the value obtained under atmospheric pressure with the exposed time. (4) In Ogino tuff, tensile strength parallel to the bedding plane was greater than that vertical to the bedding plane in dry conditions. However, in wet conditions, tensile strength parallel to the bedding plane was smaller than that vertical to the bedding plane. (5) The maximum differential stress and tensile strength of Ogino tuff were smaller in 1N NaCl solution than those in distilled water. Furthermore, the anisotropy in tensile strength observed in distilled water disappeared in the 1N NaCl solution.

The scale and characteristics of new geothermal resources, "supercritical geothermal resources", which consist of fractured rocks containing supercritical water, are highly dependent on the permeability of the intrusive rocks and its host rocks. On the other hand, it has been suggested that the permeability may change drastically due to changes in mechanical properties or rocks such as the brittle-ductile transition, and fast, nucleation-type precipitation associated with fluid phase changes, but the details are unknown. In this study, we derived model equations of permeability behaviors involving changes in the mechanical properties of rocks and phase changes of fluids through laboratory experiments, and clarified the possibility of a prediction method of spatio-temporal evolution of supercritical geothermal resources by conducting spatio-temporal evolution simulations.

We aimed to create a new scientific field for hydraulic fracturing of subsurface rocks based on results from a set of the first-ever hydraulic fracturing experiments on granite under true triaxial stress state at supercritical temperatures of water, with consideration for the formation environments of supercritical geothermal resources. We systematically and quantitatively investigated influences of various factors (temperature, stress state, fluid injection rate and so on) on fracture pattern and permeability enhancement for granite, and developed a fundamental theory of supercritical hydraulic fracturing which can be applied to a new method to create high-permeability cloud-fracture networks.

Geological models and the properties of supercritical geothermal reservoirs are described with respect to supercritical geofluids, mechanical behaviors of reservoir rocks, crustal permeability and tectonic settings. Mechanical conditions at the elastic-plastic boundaries of granitic rocks indicate potentially exploitable supercritical geothermal resources. Tensile fracturing is possible even in ductile rocks, and some permeability-depth relations proposed for the continental crust show no drastic permeability reduction at the BDT (Brittle-Ductile Transition). The reservoir permeability (&gt;10^[-16] m^2) could be maintained even under supercritical conditions. The permeable-impermeable boundary of the crust and geothermal reservoirs were affected by water-rock interaction such as dissolution and precipitation of silica minerals. NE Japan is representative of an Island-Arc setting in a subduction system, and it is highly possible that exploitable supercritical geothermal resources may be located on and around the present volcanic front.

This study was conducted for purposes of development of high-precision in-situ rock stress measurement method and the information disclosure of the in-situ rock stress state. We carried out the in-situ stress measurement after the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake and performed the comparison with the results before the earthquake. The results are summarized as follows: (1) The Cyclone Compact Data logger and the bonding device of the strain-cell unit for the Downward Compact Conical-ended Borehole Overcoring method were developed. (2) The in-situ stress measurements were performed three times after the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake. We obtained very important results to develop of 3D JAPAN STRESS MAP from the comparison with the results before the earthquake. The results of this study suggest that measurements at a fixed position, albeit at a shallow depth, can be effective for studying the relation between crustal stress and earthquakes.

A series of experimental studies on the sealability of fracture has been performed and its application to geotechnical engineering has been discussed. Firstly, analyzing the influence of environments on the sub-critical crack growth in rock, the mechanism of crack growth has been clarified. Secondarily, the self-sealing process of fracture in the rocklike material in water was investigated and the mechanism of self-sealing was clarified. Thirdly, the process of fracture propagation was analyzed numerically and a design method to control fracture propagation, i.e., crack orientation and so on. From these results, a method to estimate the long-term strength of rock has been proposed. Furthermore it is pointed out that the strength of rock can be controlled by controlling the environmental condition.

In this study, to develop a high-precision method for monitoring underground flow of carbon dioxide stored at great depth with tiltmeter, firstly we clarified the dependence of the poroelastic constants on the effective confining pressure by using a triaxial testing system that was designed and constructed to reproduce the conditions up to a depth of 2,000 m. Next, performing a theoretical study on the inverse analysis of underground fluid flow in an ellipsoidal region, we proposed an inverse method for accurately determining the region of fluid flow from data containing large noises.

Using specimen models of monomineral polycrystalline rock created on a computer, we performed both analysis of uniaxial tensile fracture and estimation of rock damage due to the viscoelastic behavior of grain boundaries during stress relief. In the former, we have clarified fracture mechanisms such that the conversion of failure mode from tension to shear always occurs during the completion of the final failure plane. In the latter, it has been shown that there is a stress region for which both the magnitudes and directions of the principal stresses can be accurately estimated by DSCA and this region becomes wider as the depth increases. Thus, we can now approach to the construction of a new theory of rock fracture by extending stress conditions.

In this study, we performed both experimental studies on permeability of a fracture under true triaxial compression and theoretical studies on aperture and permeability of a fracture utilizing large synthetic fractures of up to 12.8m. Main results obtained by experimental studies can be summarized as follows : 1. An experimental system developed in this study can evaluate the heterogeneity in the permeability of a fracture under uniform normal stress for a pore pressure of less than 0.3MPa and shear displacement of less than 50mm. 2. Experiments on an artificial fracture showed that the permeability of the fracture varied by 7.5 to 11.5% and that the hydraulic aperture gradually decreased with an increase in both normal and shear stresses. 3. Experiments on a tensile fracture showed that the experimental system could evaluate the permeability for a pore pressure of less than 0.3MPa, but a problem to be solved remained since air was trapped in the fracture. Main results obtained by theoretical studies can be summarized as follows : 1. A computer code for creating a synthetic fracture reproduced the ratio of the power spectral densities (PSDs) between aperture and surface height, measured for a tensile fracture of 1m in granite. 2. The size effect on the permeability of a normally closed fracture disappears when the fracture exceeds 0.2m since the size effect on the standard deviation (SD) of the initial aperture disappears when the fracture size exceeds 0.2m. We proposed an empirical formula for the permeability of a normally closed fracture, which is independent of the fracture size and the SD of the aperture. Similarly, the size effect on the permeability of a sheared fracture disappears when the shear displacement is less than about 3.1% of the fracture size since the size effect on the standard deviation (SD) of the initial aperture disappears under such conditions. 3. The anisotropy in the permeability of a sheared fracture increases with both shear displacement and closure. This anisotropy is caused by the difference in the aperture PSDs between two directions of macroscopic water flow ; perpendicular and parallel to the shear displacement. Furthermore, water flow is more localized with the shear displacement since a fewer channels with a greater area are formed as the shear displacement increases.

For prediction and control of the long-term permeability of a fracture in rock mass, it is indispensable to clarify permeable change of an underground fracture with time. The purpose of this study is to establish a method for prediction of long-term permeability of a fracture. For this purpose, firstly, it was carried out that theoretical study of time-dependent closure of a fracture with rough surfaces under constant normal stress. Secondary, the relaxation modulus of rock was measured by using proposed indentation-test system. Finally, the permeable change of a fracture in the rock under both of shear stress and normal stress with time was clarified experimentally and theoretically. Main results obtained in this study are summarized as follows: 1) A formula for the relationship between constant normal stress and time-dependent closure as a function of time was derived, based upon the distributions of aperture local minima and their radii. It was shown that the ultimate closure of a fracture under constant normal stress can be estimated from the normal stress-elastic closure curve and the relaxation modulus of rock. The ultimate time-dependent closure was shown to be independent of the normal stress if the elastic closure is linear with the logarithm of the normal stress (Goodman's fracture). 2) Indentation-test system for estimating the relaxation modulus and the elastic constant of rock was developed. A Monte Carlo simulation on time- dependent closure of a fracture under constant normal stress was performed by using the fracture model and the measured relaxation modulus. The results qualitatively showed that the time-dependent closure for granite is not dependent on normal stress and that for sandstone is dependent on normal stress. However, simulated time-dependent closure was fairly smaller than that of experimental results. It was thought that this difference was the main causes with the size effect by the difference of contact area. 3) Permeability test of a fracture applying shear deformation with constant/uniform normal stress under confining pressure was carried out.

Thermophysical properties of deep reservoir rocks should be directly obtained by a measurement technique in situ, because their values by laboratory measurements using samples might be influenced due to the intracrystalline microcracks originating from a stress released from the core during the drilling. The authors have developed a new method and system for simultaneous measurements of the thermal conductivity, the thermal diffusivity, and the specific heat of rocks in situ at temperatures from 273 to 473K, by applying the transient, hot-wire comparative method. In this study, a hot wire with diameter, d=80, 50 or 30μm and length=50mm was inlaid in the center of the surface of the substrate (elastic silicon gum plate of 40mm×90mm×10mm) used as a reference material. Three K-thermocouples, TィイD20ィエD2, TィイD21ィエD2 and TィイD22ィエD2 of diameter d[μm] were inlaid at xィイD20ィエD2, xィイD21ィエD2 and xィイD22ィエD2[mm] from center of the hot-wire, respectively, in the surface. Temperature rise ΔθィイD20ィエD2 at xィイD20ィエD2, and the temperature difference ΔθィイD212ィエD2=(θィイD21ィエD2)-θィイD22ィエD2) between θィイD21ィエD2 at xィイD21ィエD2 and θィイD22ィエD2 at xィイD22ィエD2 against logarithmic time ln(t) and 1/(t), respectively, were used in calculation of the thermal conductivity, λィイD2sィエD2, and the thermal diffusivity, αィイD2sィエD2, respectively. Originally this method is applied for flat boundary surface of half infinite body of the sample whose thermal conductivity is λィイD2FSィエD2 (=λィイD2sィエD2). In the study, the effect of a ratio of the curvature radius of a borehole, R[mm]=D/2 (D: diameter) to the radius of the hot wire, r=d/2, and the ratio to the reference thermal conductivity of the substrate, λィイD2RィエD2, to the sample thermal conductivity of the rocks in situ, λィイD2sィエD2, on measurement values for curved boundary surface of the borehole, λィイD2csィエD2, was studied to evaluate the values of λィイD2sィエD2. Model boreholes from 66 to 120mm in diameter were drilled in each several blocks of rocks having different values of λィイD2sィエD2. Six types of sensors inlaying the hot-wire and the thermocouples having different diameters, d[μm] of 80, 50 and 30 were used. The inlaid positions of xィイD20ィエD2, xィイD21ィエD2 and xィイD22ィエD2 were fixed at 0.5, 2.0 and 4.0 mm, respectively. As the results, suitable design parameters were obtained in order to evaluate the thermal conductivity, λィイD2FSィエD2. If the measured λ-values on the curved boundary surface in the borehole drilled into the subsurface material having λィイD2FSィエD2 were λィイD2CSィエD2, the ratio of (λィイD2CSィエD2/λィイD2FSィエD2) were less than +10% for the ratios larger than D/d=2400, and less than +5% for the ratios larger than D/d=3000, respectively, without dependency of the ratio of (λィイD2SィエD2/λィイD2RィエD2). Probes of prototype No.1 of which substrates were made by synthetic rubber for boreholes having diameter D=116 to 120mm were designed. The substrates are pressurized by compressed air or hydraulic oil, after the probes have been inserted into the borehole.

Knowledge of in-situ stress at great depth is of fundamental importance for geothermal energy extraction and underground disposal of nuclear waste. In order to estimate In-situ stress at great depth with a high accuracy, Downward Compact Conical-ended Borehole Overcoring Method(DCCBO), which is one of stress relief method was developed. DCCBO method is applicable to a mud water-filled vertical/sub-vertical borehole. Main results obtained in this study are summarized as follows : 1) An adhesive which is applicable lo a water-filled vertical/sub-vertical borehole bottom was selected. 2) Diving-bell type bonding device which is applicable to a water-filled borehole at a depth of 500m was developed. 3) 16-elements conical strain cell for DCCBO which contained nitrogen gas cylinder was developed. 4) The usefulness of the developed 16-elements conical strain cell in the isotropic rock is verified by loading and unloading tests to the cubic specimen with a borehole. 5) The usefulness of the gushing system of nitrogen gas from the tip of 16-elements conical strain cell is verified by laboratory test using a borehole model made of acrylic. 6) Bonding test of 16-elements conical strain cell to a rock specimen under water-filled condition was successful. 7) Specification of a multi-channel data logger for DCCBO was proposed.

The direction and the magnitude of tensile principal stresses within and below a long HQ core stub were analyzed with a finite element method for 77 in-situ stress conditions. 26 stress conditions were identified to be those under which core discing is likely to occur. A criterion for core discing was then proposed by evaluating the maximum tensile principal stress which is necessary for the contour plane to be formed throughout a cross-section of the core. A detail analysis on the distributions of the direction of tensile principal stresses showed that almost planar surfaces might be formed in the central part of the end surfaces of a dics and that large difference between the maximum and intermediate principal stresses might produce a so-called saddle shaped periphery. Summarizing the results obtained by the analysis, a procedure for determining principal in-situ stress directions from the geometry of a disc was proposed, based upon the symmetry of the end surfaces, the normal direction in the central part of the end surfaces and the direction of the concave or the convex axes in the end surfaces. To verify the methods for estimating three-dimensional in-situ stresses from core discing, described above, experiments on core discing were carried out for Shirakawa welded tuff and Kimachi sandstone by loading a block containing a long core with a triaxial loading system. The criterion for core discing proposed in this study approximately estimated the stresses at which core discing initiated for Shirakawa welded tuff. However, the stresses predicted by the criterion did not coincide with the experimental results for Kimachi sandstone, for which the core discing was accompanied by compressive failure at the borehole bottom. A saddle shaped dicing was not observed for these rocks even if two horizontal stresses were different.

To develop an in-situ perforation system for increasing natural gas production by using high pressure waterjets, laboratory perforation tests on a vinyl chloride casing pipe and measurements of impact pressure were carried out in a pressure vessel. Based upon the test results, an in-situ perforation system was then designed and preliminary in-situ tests were carried out for an injection well in the South Kanto natural gas field. The main results were summarized as follows : 1. The perforated area becomes maximum at an ambient pressure of 2 to 3% of the driving pressure. When the standoff distance is increased, the maximum ambient pressure where no perforation occurred decreases and the perforated area increases at low ambient pressures. Horn nozzles are more effective than a conventional straight nozzle. A horn angle of 15゚ performs best both in perforated area and in the maximum ambient pressure. 2. Dynamic components of impact pressure play a decisive and direct role in cutting materials under ambient pressure. Under the conditions where waterjets show high performance, the power spectral density of impact pressure has a peak, the frequency of which varies from a few kHz at low ambient pressures to about 23 kHz at high ambient pressures. The dynamic components seems to be related to effective cavitations for cutting materials under ambient pressure. The dynamic characteristic of noises is similar to that of impact pressure, which enables us to detect dynamic impact force during cutting materials by measuring noises outside a pressure vessel. 3. Preliminary in-situ tests were conducted successfully. The injectivity of a poor injection well was recovered drastically by perforating the casing pipe with an in-situ waterjets system, which was designed according to the results in this study.
