    Miniature size, low cost, wideband and real-time spectrum monitor using direct RF undersampling technology has been developed. Regeneration method of RF complex spectrum by using compressed sensing technology has been also proposed. We also apply these technologies to two types channel model measurements. We also propose improved method using reference signal for two type channel models. The obtained channel model data are reasonable at the physical points of view.

    The electrostatic discharge (ESD) characteristics of surface acoustic wave (SAW) antenna duplexer modules are studied. We have researched the main spectrum of ESD at first. Using the result showing that the main ESD response has a 200 to 250 MHz spectrum, three new techniques for an improved circuit and one new technique for an improved SAW package are developed to achieve the desired ESD durability in this study. A high-pass filter (Q) circuit is proposed in order to suppress the 200 to 250 MHz spectrum. A large capacitance voltage control (Cv) circuit is proposed for suppressing the minus pulse ESD signal. A low impedance transmitter (Tx) port circuit (L) near 200 to 250 MHz is proposed for suppressing the plus pulse ESD signal. A high-pressure-sealing SAW package is proposed to improve SAW device ESD durability. The obtained circuits and methods are applied to an extended global system for mobile communication/digital cellular system/personal communication system (EGSM/DCS/PCS) triple-band SAW antenna duplexer modules. A sufficiently high ESD durability is obtained consequently.

    Growth of vapor-deposited Ag films by the coalescence process in the post-nucleation stage is discussed. During and after deposition, the amplitude <i>V</i> of surface acoustic waves (SAW) propagated on the piezoelectric substrate through the films deposited on it, and the electric sheet resistivity of the films, <i>R</i><sub>sq</sub>, were measured. The microstructures of films with various thicknesses <i>d</i> were examined with a scanning electron microscope. As a result, it was found that (1) the thickness <i>d</i><sub>p</sub> at which <i>V</i> reaches a minimum value corresponds to the critical thickness at which the islands of a film begin to percolate, (2) the thickness <i>d</i><sub>c</sub> at which 1/<i>R</i><sub>sq</sub> begins to be proportional to the film thickness corresponds to the critical thickness at which the film becomes two-dimensionally continuous, (3) <i>d</i><sub>p</sub> and <i>d</i><sub>c</sub> become larger with decreasing deposition rate, and (4) in the early coalescence stage (<i>d</i><<i>d</i><sub>p</sub>), the microstructural change progresses, increasing the average inter-island spacing. From these results, we can conclude that a higher deposition rate is necessary to suppress the microstructural change of islands and to allow fabrication of continuous ultra-thin films.

We conclude that two-dimensionally continuous ultra-thin Ag films thinner than 120Å can be prepared on a 3-Å-thick Cr seed layer by continuous deposition.

    Ag and Cu films were deposited by vacuum evaporation on a LiNbO<sub>3</sub> single-crystal substrate on which surface acoustic waves (SAW) at 45 MHz were propagating. Prior to the deposition, ultra-thin Ti, Cr, Cu, and Ag films were fabricated as seed layers. The coalescence processes in an earlier stage of the film growth were investigated by measuring the SAW amplitudes during deposition. The critical thickness, at which the film structure changes from islandlike to continuous, was found to decrease with increasing seed thickness, except in the case of Cu films deposited on Ag seed layers. Ag films deposited on ultra-thin seed layers had topologically smooth surfaces in comparison with films directly deposited on the substrate. These results suggest that islands of the seed layer capture the adatoms diffused over the substrate surface and become the growth centers for the subsequent film deposition.

    Co and Fe ultra-thin films of various thicknesses coated with 50-Å-thick Cu film were prepared by vacuum evaporation on an LiNbO<sub>3</sub> single-crystal substrate excited by surface acoustic waves (SAW) at 45 MHz. In order to clarify the detailed correlation between the SAW attenuation and the microstructure of the metallic film in the initial growth stage, the magnetization curves and megnetoresistance of Cu-coated ultra-thin films were investigated as functions of Co or Fe thickness, <i>d</i>, in connection with the SAW propagation properties during deposition. With increasing <i>d</i>, the behavior of the magnetization curves changed from superparamagnetic to ferromagnetic, and the magnetoresistance, which is similar to that of Co-Cu granular alloy films, vanished at <i>d</i>=<i>d</i><sub>p</sub>, where the SAW attenuation reaches a maximum. From these results, it was concluded that the film thickness <i>d</i><sub>p</sub> corresponds to the critical thickness at which the film structure changes from island-like to continuous.

    Pure Ag, Cu, Ni, and Co films were prepared by vacuum evaporation on a LiNbO<sub>3</sub> single-crystal substrate excited by surface acoustic waves (SAW) at 45 MHz under various amplitude conditions. The surface morphology of the films and the SAW propagation properties during deposition were investigated in order to determine the influence of SAW excitation on the structural changes in the films. In the Ag and Cu films, the surface roughness <i>R</i><sub>a</sub> and the thickness <i>d</i><sub>p</sub> at which the SAW attenuation reached a maximum changed drastically as a function of the SAW amplitude, in contrast to the case for the Ni and Co films. Taking into account that <i>d</i><sub>p</sub> corresponds to the thickness at which the film structure changes from island to continuous, it was considered that SAW influences the initial stage of film growth and that a large SAW amplitude enhances the agglomeration of islands. By in situ monitoring of the propagation properties of SAW, microscopic structural changes were also found in the Ag and Cu films during the initial growth stage.

    We proposed a tunable duplexer consisted of variable frequency resonator with a troidal air core inductor and a variable capacitor to develop the tunable duplexer which can be used for the cellular system. As results of circuit simulation with equivalent circuits and electromagnetic analysis of variable frequency resonators, the tunable duplexer has 700MHz〜2700MHz of wideband tunable range, less than 4.2dB of pass-band loss, and over 46dB of stop-band attenuation. As measurement results, we confirmed that the troidal air core inductor which constructs the tunable duplexer is achieved requirements of its inductance and Q-value. Therefore, we have obtained a vision to develop the tunable duplexer.

    The double mode IDTs structure on 42deg.Y-X LiTaO3 is selected as our experiment for low loss EGSM filter. We have observed Leaky-SAW radiation pattern at first. SAW radiation patterns are obtained using a heterodyne interferometer-type laser probe method. Two spurious radiation modes are observed in the conventional double-mode structure. First mode wave is traveling toward the almost same direction of the main SAW response on bus-bar edge. Second mode wave is traveling toward the direction 40deg. angle rotated from the main SAW direction. We success to suppress the first sourious mode by using grating structure which reduces the SAW velocity on edge of bus-bar. The first sourious mode wave is not observed and low loss frequency characteristics are measured in new IDT structure. The aperture of grating structure is optimized by testing the various parameters of the structure. Consequently, loss of the filter is improved by the new wave-guide structure.

    An optimized phase shifter condition for the SAW antenna modules has been provided to achieve high isolation performances when the load impedance is not characteristics impedance. In the EGSM/DCS dual band antenna duplexer modules, impedances of low noise amplifiers connecting the Rx ports are not characteristics impedance when the amplifier switches are off state at transmitter period. We propose optimized phase shifter circuits for EGSM Rx output ports. Isolation improvement of 6 dB is obtained in this case. In the Japanese cdmaOne duplexer, we propose an optimized phase shifter circuit for the transmitter circuit between Rx band trap and transmitter top filter block. Isolation improvement of 1 to 3 dB is obtained in this case.

    SAW devices has been proposed which compose a group type unidirectional technique and cascaded interdigital transducers (IDTs) structure to achieve desired performances without the gratings and the external phase shifters. In order to confirm the prediction, simulations and experiments are applied. We select the equivalent circuit model and circuit composition procedure as a simulation technique. The predictions are verified by the simulations and the experiments. And an improved cascaded UDT structure has also been proposed to achieve desired wideband performances.

    SAW matched filter is a key-device for Spread Spectrum (SS) communication. We have shown that the TTE level of matched filter the for SS signal for is lower than that of an ordinary SAW tnansversal filter for CW signals even if outer circuit-impedance is fully matched to the SAW matched filter. A time-domain analysis using an cincuit network tool for various kind of construction have been used for the matched filter with 25-chip low autocorrelation sequence, this analysis agreed with the experiments to verify this TTE behavor.

    A 1Mbps spread spectrum (SS) radio unit has been developed for wireless communication. As a first step, the very weak intensity 300MHz carrier signals are transmitted with direct sequence (DS) spectrum-spreading. The received signals are despread by using a SAW matched filter with a locally deposited ZnO layer on the input IDT on a st-cut quartz substrate to reduce mismatch loss. For DPSK data time-sidelobe of the filter autocorrelation is reduced using a new 25 chip spreading code. Further a time-window threshold-gate is developed, enhancing the receiver sensitivity by 8dB. As a tryal application to moving-picture wireless-transmission, a prototype visual transceiver has been developed, receiving the moving pictures of 112 × 112pixels with 5 frames/s at a distance 10 to 20m from the transmitter.

    A lMbps spread spectrum(SS) radio unit has been developed for wireless communication with the very weak intensity carrier signals in Japan. For DPSK data time-sidelobe of the filter autocorrelation is reduced using a new 25 chip spreading code by 6dB compared with a 31 chip M-sequence. Further a time-window threshold-gate is developed, enhancing the receiver sensitivity by 8 dB. As a result of these improvements this radio unit can receive the radio signals at a distance 10 to 20 m from the transmitter.

    A SAW-Diffraction simulation method is discussed for more accurate designing of SAW filters. In this method, instead of conventional sources such as homogeneous line source or charge density distribution, a line source having intensity distribution derived from a particle-displacement-distribution analysis using a three-dimensional FEM (finite element method) is utilized as source of angular spectrum of wave (ASW) method. Further, considering distributed transduction from acoustic field to electrical signals in output electrodes, frequency characteristics of SAW filters are calculated. By using this method, more accurate simulation results of out-band rejection is obtained when the center distance between input and output transducers is smaller than 80 wavelength.

    For direct sequence (DS) spread spectrum (s-s) communication systems with DPSK modulation, we have searched out new pseudo noise (PN) sequences. Furthermore, a new construction of a low loss SAW matched filter is developed, comprising localized ZnO-layered structure on a quartz crystal. As a result of the sequences and the construction, 14dB (6dB improvement on the conventional m-sequences) peak vs. sidelobe of correlated output-signal and 9dB lower loss than that of conventional one without ZnO film was achieved for a 300MHz SAW matched filter corresponding to the above PN-sequences with 25chips. We have applied these matched filters to SS rf-modem-units for weak power digital communications. In these modem-units the high data-rate (1Mbps), long communication distance (about 20m) and low current (210mA when received) performances are obtained.

    Fe films of 300Å thickness were prepared by electron beam evaporation and d. c. magnetron sputtering onto LiNbO<sub>3</sub> single crystal substrate excited by surface acoustic wave (SAW) at 45 MHz. Biaxial anisotropy was induced in plane for evaporated films excited at 8 V, while not induced for all sputtered films. The saturation magnetization, <i>M</i><sub>s</sub>, of evaporated films increased with increases in the excitation voltage, and reached the bulk value at excitation voltage of 8 V. However, <i>M</i><sub>s</sub> of sputtered films did not change by SAW excitation. The density of evaporated films was close to the density of bulk Fe at excitation voltage of 8 V. This fact shows that the structure of evaporated films changed from a porous structure to a dense structure by SAW excitation. Furthermore, the surface became smooth in the excited films.

    Permalloy films of 300Å thickness were prepared by d.c. magnetron sputtering onto LiNbO<sub>3</sub> single crystal substrate excited by SAW at 45 MHz. Film structure such as shapes and size of grains was found to be drastically changed as a function of excited amplitude. Especially in the case of 24Å<sub>o-p</sub> for excited amplitude, films consisted of very fine homogeneous grains and showed magnetic softness, namely minimum coercive force. Uniaxial anisotropy was induced in plane for all the films examined; however, in the critical excited amplitude mentioned above, a drastic change of the easy axis in plane was found. As a conclusion, film preparation onto the substrate excited by SAW is considered to be a highly useful method to control the microscopical film structure and also the magnetic properties.
