    Abstract Conductive filter membranes have shown great potential in alleviating membrane fouling. In this study, polypyrrole (PPy) was used as the conductive material and sodium anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS) was used as the dopant to perform surface modification on the PVDF membrane. After modification, the contact angle of the membrane decreased from 79.40° to 48.57°, and the electrical conductivity of membrane increased from zero to 1.60 S/cm. The good hydrophilicity and electrical conductivity of PPy-AQS/PVDF endowed it with superior antifouling capabilities, reducing the static protein (BSA) adsorption from 0.147 mg/cm2 to 0.097 mg/cm2. Under the action of an electric field of −0.1 V, the flux decay rate of PPy-AQS/PVDF decreased, and the flux recovery rate improved.

    In recent years, carbon offsetting, which promotes the reduction and absorption of greenhouse gas emissions as a countermeasure against global warming, has been attracting attention. While terrestrial forests have been utilized as a place to absorb greenhouse gases, or carbon negative sites, seagrass beds are expected to play an important role. The carbon absorbed, sequestered, and stored in the ocean and sediments by marine organisms is called blue carbon, which was proposed by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 2009, but the exact amount of carbon sequestration is not yet known, and scientific issues remain. This study aimed to analyze the carbon origin of organic matter in the sediments of Shizugawa Bay and to evaluate the effect of seagrass- and seaweed-derived organic matter on the sequestration in the sediments. The carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios were measured as indicators of organic matter, and the origin of the organic matter was analyzed. The cellulose, a refractory organic matter, was separated, and its carbon stable isotope ratios were measured. The result indicated that cellulose not only from land plants but also from seaweeds and seagrasses was a component of sediment organic matter may be contained in the bottom sediment.

    The temporal patterns of nutrient inputs into coastal marine systems are affected by changes in precipitations, hydrological runoff, and release of treated wastewater. Those further affects quantitatively and qualitatively marine primary producers. We conducted a continuous incubation experiment of the diatom species Skeletonema marinoi-dohrnii under two different supply patterns of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorous: short-term intensive supply (pulse treatment) and continuous low-concentration supply (press treatment). In the pulse treatment, the concentration of diatom cells showed apparent production-wethering cycles, and reached relatively higher concentrations at the steady state. While the content of essential fatty acids in the diatom cells was also relatively higher in the pulse treatment, the contents of some of the saturated and monosaturated fatty acids were higher in the diatoms produced under the press treatment. In the press treatment, the continuous depletion of nutrients may have caused an adaptive response of the diatoms leading to their lower growth rate as well as lower contents of the essential fatty acids.

    We examined the orignins and nutritional value of suspended particulate organic matter (POM) in seawater, which are the potential food source for fouling organisms, in seawater cooling systems of six power stations located in the norseastern Japan. We sampled POM and fouling organisms, and analyzed them for C and N stable isotope ratios (δ13C, δ15N) and the ratio of C/N. As a result, the chemical properties of POM varied between the power stations. POM from the three stations on the Japan Sea coast was considered to have relatively higher contents of POM originating from terrestrial plant and/or riverine producers. POM from the other three stations on the Pacific Ocean coast likely had higher contents of marine phytoplanktons. The POM concentration was generally positively related to dissolved inorganic nitrogen in the seawaters, suggesting that the reduction of anthropogenic nitrogen can potentially be an effective tactics to mitigate the biofoulings in the cooling systems. Furthermore, δ13C and δ15N of the fouling organisms were markedly higher compared with those of POM. This suggests that the fouling organisms selectively assimilated the marine phytoplankton fraction of the bulk POM. Therefore, when the food supply for the fouling ornigsms is evaluated based on bulk POM, that is potentially overestimated. To properly predict effects of nutrient/POM reductions on the production of fouling organisms, further studies are necessaly to accumulate field data and develop reliable, quantitative models describing relationships for POM vs. nutrients as well as fouling organisms vs. POM.

    We compared the feeding and biodepositing rate of the cultivated oysters and fouling mussels by the feeding experiment. The object of this study was to understand the impacts of fouling mussels on the growth of oysters and the load of particulate organic matter (POM) to the sea bottom at the oyster farms. Results showed that the feeding rate of EPA and DHA per the biomass of bivalve were larger in fouling mussels compared with oysters, which implied that fouling mussels can ingest more POM originated from phytoplankton which is essential for their growth. It was also revealed that mussels excrete more POC than oysters per unit biomass and per time. On the other hand, the amount of EPA and DHA per unit POC was lower in biodeposits from mussels than that from oysters. These results imply that removing fouling mussels from oyster farms can reduce the mass of settling POM from farms, although it is possible that the oxygen consumption rate of settling POM increase in the short term. In conclusion, removing fouling mussels from oyster farms can lead to the form of sustainable aquaculture, in terms of the efficient use of phytoplankton resources and the mitigation of the environmental impacts.

    <title>Abstract</title> Community-based diversity analyses, such as metabarcoding, are increasingly popular in the field of metazoan zooplankton community ecology. However, some of the methodological uncertainties remain, such as the potential inflation of diversity estimates resulting from contamination by pseudogene sequences. Furthermore, primer affinity to specific taxonomic groups might skew community composition and structure during PCR. In this study, we estimated OTU (operational taxonomic unit) richness, Shannon’s H’, and the phylum-level community composition of samples from a coastal zooplankton community using four approaches: complement DNA (cDNA) and genomic DNA (gDNA) mitochondrial COI (Cytochrome oxidase subunit I) gene amplicon, metatranscriptome sequencing, and morphological identification. Results of mismatch distribution demonstrated that 90% is good threshold percentage to differentiate intra- and inter-species. Moderate level of correlations appeared upon comparing the species/OTU richness estimated from the different methods. Results strongly indicated that diversity inflation occurred in the samples amplified from gDNA because of mitochondrial pseudogene contamination (overall, gDNA produced two times more richness compared with cDNA amplicons). The unique community compositions observed in the PCR-based methods indicated that taxonomic amplification bias had occurred during the PCR. Therefore, it is recommended that PCR-free approaches be used whenever resolving community structure represents an essential aspect of the analysis.

    We studied the effect of the chemical interaction of nutrients and the ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) on metals toxicity. Growth inhibition tests of Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata by nutrient metals copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), and the non-nutrient metal lead (Pb), were performed. The high-enriched Bold's Basal medium (BBm) and two low-enriched standard media, recommended by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECDm) and Environmental Protection Agency-algal assay procedure medium (AAPm), were used in this study. The metals toxicity was affected by the interaction of nutrients and EDTA. Cu+2 was more toxic in the OECDm (EC50 20.3 μg/L), while Pb+2 (EC50 23.1 μg/L) and Zn+2 (EC50 99.4 μg/L) in the AAPm. Non-toxic effect of these metals was observed in BBm, but the exclusion of EDTA shifted it into a toxic medium. Finally, we found that the toxicity of the studied nutrient metals is mainly influenced by EDTA, which reduced the concentration of ionized metals, while the toxicity of the non-nutrient metal is affected by EDTA and phosphates.

    Aniculus erythraeus Forest, 1984, a poorly known species of hermit crab, is reported for the first time from Japan based on a single specimen collected from Kume Island, Ryukyu Islands. This discovery increases the number of Japanese species of Aniculus to seven and greatly extends the distributional range of the present species to the north. Differences between A. erythraeus and its close congener A. ursus (Olivier, 1812) are discussed on the basis of the specimens from the Ryukyu Islands.

    We review previous studies on organic matter dynamics in shallow marine systems at two different spatial scales, and present our relevant research. For large-spatial-scale mixing of organic matter of different origins, previous studies have demonstrated that the quantity and quality of organic matter transported from rivers, which reflect watershed characteristics, importantly affect biogeochemical properties and ecological processes (e.g. food web structure, habitat selection) in shallow marine systems. Our studies in an estuarine tidal flat system of Nanakita River showed that the organic content of the sediment fluctuated continuously, and that the cycle-period and range of the variations in the organic content of sediment as well as the physical mechanisms underlying this variation were distinctly different between non-cohesive and cohesive sediments. These findings suggest that the sediments of shallow marine systems can be alternatively a source and a sink of organic matter, and that such processes are dependent on sediment characteristics. To evaluate the roles of benthic microalgae in the organic matter dynamics on large spatial scales, further studies are needed, although there has been some research examining the effects of benthic microalgae on biogeochemical processes in sediments..

    Sediment sampling was conducted at three locations before and after a flood in the Nanakita river. The sediment samples were analyzed to obtain the information on the particle size distribution, the amount of resuspendable fine particulate organic matter (FPOM) available on the bed, and the composition of the basic nutrients, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous, in the FPOM. The data suggest that there is an equilibrium state in which the amount of FPOM on the bed is constant in the low flow condition. The behavior of FPOM is found to show strong locality; the amount of FPOM on the bed increases during floods at some locations while it decreases during floods at other locations. In the analysis of nutrients and the microscopic observation, it is suggested that FPOM accumulated on the bed during floods is directly originated from the terrestrial area. FPOM that accumulated in the sediment after flood at all locations are found to be gradually changed in size and composition because biological activities are in process and dominant in the low flow condition.

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the deposit and decomposition characteristics of microalgae using the gravel bed contact-purification method. The following results were obtained : The deposit ratio of Tetraselmis tetrathele is higher than that of Nitzchia closterium due to the shape and size of their cells. The deposit characteristic is expressed by the Iwasaki's filtration equation, and the filter coefficient is a function of real velocity and specific surface area of gravel bed. The decomposition rate constant of deposited microalgae is ranged from 0.10 to 0.14 hr-1 winch is 20-30 times as high as that under suspended condition. The decomposition rate has a proportional relation to the specific surface area in case enough amount of microalgae deposit in gravel bed. Under a few assumptions, both the deposit and decomposition rates are defined by gravel diameter. Therefore, it is possible to design the optimum gravel diameter for the effective and sustainable removal of microalgae using this system.

    1) 窒素供給に対する植物プランクトン群集の生体分子合成の応答パターンを解析するための現場実験を志津川湾において実施した．夏季の比較的低栄養塩の条件下で，現地海水を透明タンクに密閉し異なる窒素・リン添加条件下で同海域内にて培養した．脂肪酸分析の結果，以前の実験結果から当初想定していた窒素添加による珪藻マーカー脂肪酸生産の抑制や細菌・藍藻マーカー脂肪酸の促進の傾向が認められなかった．以前の実験に比較して実験時の水温が若干低かったことが影響した可能性が考えられる．これらの結果を踏まえ，今後，温度の交互作用効果も加味して評価できる実験系で，さらに窒素供給による植物プランクトン群集ならびにその生体分子生成への影響の検討を進める必要があると判断された． 2) 植物プランクトン群集への栄養塩供給を制御したマガキ飼育実験のためのメソコズム実験系を作製した．そして初冬の２カ月間にわたって実海水の連続流入運転の中で窒素・リン添加を行い，生産されるプランクトン群集やそれを摂餌したカキの生育・化学組成への影響を検討した．その結果，栄養塩添加によるプランクトン由来粒状有機物の脂肪酸組成に変化がみられた．特に，窒素の添加が珪藻マーカー脂肪酸（特にEPA）の生産を高めていたことから，珪藻の生産が高められたと考えられる．一方で，それを摂餌したカキの生育や化学組成には，有意な影響が認められなかった．今回の結果では，季節的に比較的低い水温条件下での実験であったことから，全般的にプランクトンの生産活性が低い，珪藻に比較的有利，カキの生育が遅い・活性が比較的低いなどの要因が作用した可能性も考えられる．今後，異なる季節を含めて継続的に実験を行い，傾向を見定めていく必要があると判断された．

    1) 志津川湾内のカキ養殖場で実施されている付着生物除去とカキの生育促進のための温湯処理について，2019年9月から約5か月にわたり実施した現地実験で得られた試料の化学組成分析とデータ解析を継続して行った．それらの結果から，温湯処理によって，カキの生育や軟体部のEPA等有用脂肪酸含有量が非処理に比べて向上するとともに，美味しさの指標のひとつと考えられるグリコーゲンの含有量も相対的に高くなることが示された．さらに，養殖カキの殻表面に付着する他の生物種（イガイ，ホヤ等）についても脂肪酸組成分析を行い，餌資源の類似性の観点から，カキとの競合の強さを評価した結果，特にイガイと比較的強い競合関係にあることが示唆された． 2) 志津川湾において，継続的に実施している海域観測を行った．特に，湾内複数地点における粒状有機物の化学組成の季節サイクル，および河口部を中心とした河川水流入やそれに応答する植物プランクトンの消長に関して，今後のモデル解析に必要となる定量データの集積を継続して行った． 3) カキ養殖漁業者の漁業生産性・収益向上に手助けとなるツールの構築を念頭に，カキの生活史による生育速度の時間的変化と垂下密度による生育への影響を加味して，稚ガキ投入や収穫時期・量の最適条件を探索するためのモデル構築を行った．数理最適化のためのアルゴリズム構築や，計算条件の具体化のための漁業者からの情報収集などを行った．

    1) 2020年にカナダ東部ノバスコシア州内３湾より採取したカキ軟体部の炭素・窒素安定同位体比や脂肪酸組成等の化学組成データについて，その空間分布や相関関係に関する解析を進めた．その結果，一部の化学指標について明確な湾内・湾間の空間変化パターンが明らかになった．特に２湾では，窒素安定同位体比が湾奥から湾口部にかけての勾配を有し，さらにそれと複数の脂肪酸指標の間で有意な負の関係が見いだされた．今後，これらの結果について解釈を深める．その過程では，カキ養殖が各湾内の粒状有機物の空間分布におよぼす影響を，受入研究者らが構築した数値シミュレーションモデルからSRI (Seston Reduction Index)として算出し，それと各化学指標との関係も解析する． 2) 物質動態や二次生産環境の評価への脂肪酸指標利用の有効性を検討するため，2021年夏季にノバスコシア州東岸１湾およびプリンスエドワードアイランド州１湾を対象に，受入研究者が中心となって湾内の粒状有機物や貝類の採取を行った．そして，今後それら試料の安定同位体比・脂肪酸組成の分析を代表者研究室にて実施するために，受入研究者のDalhousie University内の実験室に共同で整備した作業環境を利用し化学分析用試料の前処理を実施し完了した． 3) 実海域における脂肪酸動態の理解とモデル化を目指し，基課題がフィールドとする志津川湾で取得したデータ（浮遊性と沈降性の粒状有機物，さらに異なる水深帯の粒状有機物の脂肪酸組成データなど）を活用して，沈降・分解過程での脂肪酸組成の変化・挙動を継続して解析した．一部の脂肪酸指標が粒状有機物の分解性や酸素消費活性を強く反映していることが明らかとなり，それらの関係性を統計モデルとして記述した．

    Field data collections and experiments were conducted to enhance understanding of spatiotemporal variations of physical environments and chemical compositions of particulate organic matter (POM) in Shizugawa Bay. Based on analyses of long-term high-resolution reanalysis datasets, some notable processes, such as long-term trends and stratifications, in the study bay were also found out. Our results support that the fatty acid composition of POM can be a useful indicator to capture responses of primary production, respiration, and oxygen consumption to environmental changes in inner bay systems.

    Zostera habitats (Zostera marina and Zostera caulescens) in the Oshika Peninsula dramatically decreased by the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. Z. caulescens habitat recovered in 4.5 - 6.5 years after the earthquake. On the other hand, the density of Z. marina remained at relatively low levels after the event. The low underwater light intensity due to the land subsidence and the discharged turbidity from the river after the earthquake were likely the factors responsible for the sparse density in Z. marina. After the earthquake, increase in silt content and the eutrophication of sediment at the tidal flat were occurred in Matsushima bay. The settlements of Ruditapes philippinarum larvae were considered to be inhibited by the increase of the silt content of the sediment after the earthquake. Our results suggested that the silt content of sediment was influenced by the fine sediment discharged from coastal construction sites or transportations from the offshore side of the bay.

    Distributed model of periphyton was developed using a nutrient transport model and a water temperature model based on a distributed hydrological model. The model accuracy is RMSE=11.5mg/m2 monthly. Positive correlations were observed between the population densities and eDNA concentrations for orders Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Dipetra. Field observations showed significant and positive correlation between periphyton and stream insect biomass. The variation of periphyton biomass as producer influenced consumer biomass in the higher energy position of ecological pyramid.

    Based on field surveys, we clarified patterns in seasonal and spatial variations of chemical compositions (fatty acid compositions and C & N stable isotope ratios) of particulate organic matter (POM) as well as effects of offshore and river water inputs and oyster farming on POM dynamics in Shizugawa Bay. Furthermore, based on laboratory experiments, we revealed effects of environmental changes, such as nutrient inputs and temperature increase, on production and respiration of POM. Our results demonstrate that modelling POM dynamics taking account of particle size and fatty acid compositions of POM potentially enhance substantially assessments for effects of environmental changes on biogeochemical processes and fishery productions by aquacultures.

    To gather fundamental information for developing ecological assessment procedures applying fatty acid composition analysis of predatory organisms, we conducted field studies in Shizugawa Bay. Predatory fish were collected at four stations within an approximately 2-km range of the bay, and analyzed for fatty acid compositions. As a result, there were significant differences in fatty acid compositions of predatory fish between the sampling stations. In addition, based on samplings of macrobenthos at two stations of estuary and middle-part of the bay, it was found that fatty acid compositions of macrobenthos were also different between the two stations and also reflected by those of predatory fish. We further found some patterns in the compositional changes of fatty acids between macrobenthos and predatory fish.

    In this study, it is to clarify how aquatic animals acquire essential fatty acids necessary for survival and reproduction while cyanobacteria predominately over other algae in Lake Taihu. As a result, it was suggested that cyanobacteria might not be an important food source for all aquatic animals appearing in Lake Taihu, but it was important for shrimp. In addition, it was revealed that fish such as Hypomesus nipponensis ingested carbon of cyanobacteria at Lake Hachiro during the occurrence of water bloom. Furthermore, it was revealed that the micrometazoan Aeolosoma can reproduce itself by synthesizing essential fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid.

    We examined relationships between hydrodynamic conditions and sediment properties in subtropical, coastal soft-bottom habitats, and further proposed a mechanistic model for physical processes responsible for non-linearity of the relationships. We also found that coastal sediment properties reflect watershed environment in estuarine sites at which depositional processes dominantly control sediment properties. Based on our findings, we propose a guideline listing points which managers should take account of to properly manage coastal soft-bottom habitats.

    1.空間的に異なる干潟の水質浄化・生物生産機能を、底質の有機物含有量を主要パラメータとして自然科学に評価するモデルを作成するため知見を現場調査より収集した。 ○有機物含有率が異なる4地点の干潟底質における有機物含有率の長期変動特性、および流れ・波に伴うせん断力の時間変動との関係を解析した。低含有率の場における両者の時間変動には関連がみられたが高含有率の場ではみられなかった。空間的な比較では、底質の有機物含有率はせん断力の低い地点ほど高かった。 ○平穏時の干潟における有機物収支を異なる底質の有機物含有率の場でそれぞれ計測し、有機物含有率の高い干潟底質からは有機物が流出、逆に低い底質には蓄積する傾向が示された。これは、底質の有機物含有率がこの場の短期的な水質や有機物収支を支配していることを示唆している。長期的な収支を考えた場合には、イベント的に有機物が大量に底質に蓄積する、あるいは逆に底質から流出するなど、平穏時と逆の現象が起きている事が推察された。 ○有機物含有率の異なる底質を有する干潟で、微生物による有機物の分解および生産活性を調査した。炭素含有率の1%前後までは、その上昇と共に分解および生産の活性が増大する傾向が示された。分解は基質としての有機物の増加、生産は場のせん断力が低下することによる藻類密度の上昇によると推察された。 2.自然科学的モデルによって評価される干潟生態系の水質浄化・生物生産機能を、社会経済的評価に結合する手法の検討と課題の整理を行った。 ○自然科学的評価から導かれる干潟生態系の水質浄化・生物生産機能を、顕示選好型の社会経済評価モデルに導入することを検討した。その結果、干潟よりも大きな空間スケールで、干潟の機能がもたらす水質等への影響評価が必要と考えられ、その精度は現時点では自然科学-社会経済結合型の定量的な機能評価を行ううえで不十分であり、干潟生態系機能の自然科学的評価手法の充実が課題と考えられた。

    In order to develop a creation technology of tidal flat biotope for reduction of nitrogen and phosphorus loads and efficient use of treated sewage, we studied on the self-purification function of tidal flats, such as nutrients uptake by reed wetland, nutrients cycle and denitrification in tidal flat and nutrients uptake by seaweed bed. The results of this study are summarized as follows. 1) Reed wetland The effect of porosity of the filling carrier on removal capability of nutrients from treated sewage was analyzed. Nitrification and denitrification by the rhizosphere microorganism were important for the nitrogen removal, and the simultaneous reaction of nitrification and denitrification occurred under appropriate conditions of porosity and water surface loading. The removal of phosphorus was mainly carried out by the adsorption to the carrier. Therefore, high removal efficiency was obtained by the carrier with low porosity. 2) Tidal flat The purification function of attached animal that lived for the revetment of the Tokyo inner bay was evaluated. The attached animal purified organic matter of 19t-COD/day at revetment distance of 192km, and this value corresponded to 23% of COD that flows from Tokyo. The environment factors concerning fluctuations of biomass and species of macrobenthos inhabiting in the Kasai artificial beach were analyzed. The benthos was damaged in the rainfall time. It was due to the inflow and retention of river water. When the river water had been increased by rainfall, the water quality in Kasai artificial beach became a low salinity by the structural problem, and some kinds of bivalve died. 3) Seaweed bed The nutrient uptake rate of Sargassum horneri became the highest from May to June in which the growth rate was also the highest We could make the equation of the nutrient uptake rate which was the function of growth stage, nutrient concentration, illumination intensity and temperature. The effect of nutrients uptake by S. horneri on the nutrients cycle of Matsushima Bay was evaluated. The S. horneri bed in May absorbed about 70% of the nutrients inflow load, and it greatly contributes to improving water quality.
