    本年度当初計画していた現地調査については、コロナウィルス感染症の影響で実施できなかった。しかし昨年度の計画見直しで新たに設定した委託調査をそれに代えて行うことができた。具体的には、海外の協力機関（インドネシア・北スマトラ大学）との協力によって、10月から3月にかけて北スマトラ州で25の冠婚葬祭業者への聞き取り調査を行い、それらの調査内容をデータ化することができた。 調査にあたっては日本で直接研究代表者が指導教員として現地調査法の指導を行った信頼できる研究者をリーダーとしたチームを作り、そこに調査を委託する形をとった。またチームとは毎月ミーティングを行い、調査内容についてフィードバックを行った。調査項目としては、起業の時期・きっかけ・規模、業務内容、顧客の範囲、他業者との関係、近年の変化特にCOVID-19の影響などについて、質問シートに即して聞き取りを行った。 結果については現在まとめの途中であるが、インドネシアにおいても冠婚葬祭業の産業化が顕著になっていること、一方で文化や宗教の多様性、親族ネットワークの強靭さなどによって、大規模業者による標準的な儀礼の普及という日本的な展開とは違った実態も明らかになった。 また、COVID-19の影響のためインドネシア政府により大規模な儀礼に関する規制が行われる中、従来の大規模業者が苦戦している一方、ITなどのスキルを活かした若者による起業が目立つということも分かった。

    本研究は、近世日本の具体的な災害の事例から「災害死者」の発生・埋葬・慰霊の様子を考察し、近世災害死者の特質を解明することを目的とするものであった。そのため、文献資料の調査、供養塔や地蔵像などに関する現地調査、博物館・資料館の災害関連の絵画資料の調査を行う予定であったが、コロナ事態の勃発により、資料調査や現地調査に多くの制限が生じた。感染拡大地域への移動の制限や、寺院や資料館、博物館の休館、また対面によるインタビュー調査が難しくなり、最初の計画のとおりに調査を行うことはできなった。 そうした制限の中で、可能な限り文献調査と現地調査を行うことにした。まず、「明暦の大火」に関する調査では、火災死者の集団埋葬地に建てられた回向院の慰霊碑の調査を行い、今まで不明確であった銘文の内容を明らかにした。「享保の飢饉」に関しては、福岡県と佐賀県で飢饉死者のために建てられた供養塔と地蔵像の調査を行い、その位置と銘文の内容を確認することができた。「浅間山大噴火」に関しては、群馬県と長野県にある資料館などを訪問し、文献資料を確認するとともに、現地にある災害死者の供養塔と死者供養を行っている寺院の確認を行った。東北地方では、数回にわたって、青森県、岩手県、宮城県、福島県などで「天明・天保の大飢饉」と関連があると思われる、飢饉死者供養塔と地蔵像の調査を行い、その位置や銘文の内容を確認した。そして熊本県の天草と長崎県の島原半島では「島原大変肥後迷惑」の供養塔に関する現地調査なども行った。 コロナ禍の中で研究を行うことに様々な限界があったが、人々との接触を減らしつつ、個人で可能な現地調査と文献調査を行い、写真撮影などを中心に資料を収集し、その資料を分析する形で全体的な研究を行った。その成果は『近世日本の災害と宗教――呪術・終末・慰霊・象徴』（吉川弘文館、2021年）を通して、まとめて発表することができた。

    2020年度は、予定していた海外調査は行えなかったが、国内での調査や教材作成に注力をした。とくに海外の大学でも使えるYouTube動画の作成では、海外の研究者と協力し、質の高い英語字幕を付している。「神社に行こう」１、２ 研究代表者の平藤喜久子は、上記の動画の作成のほか、日本神話に関連する地域の教材写真の撮影、対馬の神道関連の史跡の写真撮影を行った。 研究分担者の星野靖二は、主として文献とインターネット上の情報によって、英語圏の大学において日本の宗教がどのように教えられているのかについての調査を進めた。大東敬明は、國學院大學博物館に於いて、令和３年度に行う企画展「What is Shinto？」の展示計画に参加した。同展示は神道を概説するもので、本科学研究費の成果の一部も反映させる予定である。岩野祐介は、教会関係者対象のオンライン講座で、本科研の成果も含め、日本キリスト教史に関係する講演を行った。徳野崇行は、幸先詣（12月29日の神田明神、湯島天神、12月31日の深大寺）、コロナ禍の初詣（1月1日の明治神宮）の調査を行い、教材作成を行っている。黒崎浩行は、2018・2019年度に熊本県人吉市・球磨郡湯前町で祭礼・神楽の映像記録と関係者への聞き取り調査を行ったが、2020年7月4日、同地域が豪雨災害に遭い、新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響により祭礼が中止・縮小となった。2021年2月に同地域を再訪し、現況の観察と関係者への聞き取り調査を行った。櫻井義秀は、新型コロナウイルス感染拡大に伴い、タイ・韓国への渡航ができず海外の日本宗教教育の視察等はできなかった。代わりに「タイ仏教のかたち」というオンライン公開講座の講師他を務める他、文献で宗教文化の研究を行った。

    In multicultural societies, Alevis which have been non-mainstream groups, have various boundaries. This research clarified perception and recognition of their own ethnicities and boundaries, and the conflicts arising from them. It further inquired into the results of it. It shows the strategies for the living of Alevis in the societies which they moved into. During this period, we have focused on Alevis in Turkey, Germany, France and Australia, the Bektashi groups in Albania, and Ahl-e Haqq in Iran. The study illuminated cultural changes, precepts and practices of both Alevis and the Bektashi in transnational and transcultural spaces as well as Ahl-e Haqq in Iran. We produced a report paper in March 2022 of the research project on cultural, historical and religious aspects of changes and development of them. Also, our reports include such as the worship or reverence of sainthood, Ali-cult or worship of Ali, and visit-culture to mausoleums or tombs in turkey, Iran, Kurdistan and Europe.

    The phenomenology of religion is a branch of the study of religion that claims to represent the core of the discipline. It became popular in the 1960s, then met severe criticism, culminating in the 1990s, and mostly disappeared. Although scholars now regard it as a theory of only historiographic interest, no scholar concerned with the disciplinary identity of the study of religion can ignore it. Yet, this project is not an attempt to rehabilitate it. It offers a different way of looking at the non-linear theoretical development of the study of religion. This project has thus investigated: how the phenomenology of religion was accepted and developed in different national contexts; why it disappeared so abruptly in the 1990s; how scholars currently evaluate it. It consists of interviews with senior scholars in 10 countries, conducted by both Japanese members and international collaborators. The Japanese members have also enriched the interviews by analyzing historical materials in depth.

    1.In order to analyze the influence of disaster to the religious plurality in affected area on macro level, we focused on the transition of the number of the facilities of religions in affected area. We collected the data of Kobe, Miyagi, Fukushima, Iwate (Japan), Aceh, Nias, Sumatra Barat, Yograkarta and Taiwan and clarify the pattern of the transition of religious balance between major and minor religions before and after great disaster. 2.Based on these results, we tried to show the background and the influence of religious aid to these transition in detail by ethnographic studies on each area. 3.In addition, holding international conferences four times, we shared these results with the local research institutions (ex. Gadjah Mada Univ. Indonesia, Sichuan Univ. China, Mimal Sinan Umiv. Turkey) and discussed the role of humanistic and social sciences to facilitate religious aid taking religious plurality into account.

    The intangible cultural heritage contributes community recover process after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. The purpose of the project is to broadcast abroad the results of the related applied anthropology in Japan and to network international scholarship of the field. Through three years period, we organized four international workshops (or session) in UK, New Zealand, Indonesia, and Japan and participated to read the paper in many international conferences. These activities encouraged international concerns of disaster ethnography in Japan studies. We also contribute to awaken the international scholarship the importance of disaster collaborative humanities focus on local memory and cultural heritage such as festival, ritual and performing arts. We also have plans of publication (in progress) both in English and Japanese involving the scholars in New Zealand.

    In the disaster area of the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami in 2011, bereaved people have various representations of the dead, which are sometimes expressed as ghost phenomena. Religious specialists, such as Buddhist priests, treat them, referring to the context of local religious custom or tradition of the sect they belong to. According to our survey, four common characteristics of how priests treat their clients can be pointed out: (1) Acceptance and listening, (2) Performing rituals, (3) Providing moral instruction, and (4) Promoting self-care for the afflicted. These could be important lessons when considering the nature of “kokoro no kea” by religious specialists among different professionals.

    Our research has found that using online teaching materials can be extremely effective for carrying out religious culture education. The materials that were produced over the course of our research have been made available through our website. They include commentaries on the basic texts used in religious culture education, a database of world heritage properties associated with religious culture, a database related to film and religious culture, and a database of museums in Japan that are particularly useful for religious culture education. Discussions at forums with an international framework and at study meetings attended by scholars from many Japanese universities have also made it clear that religious culture education has become an important issue in the context of ongoing globalization. Various initiatives are being undertaken grounded in the religious cultures of the countries concerned.

    In this project, I tried to clarify the role that religion played in the process of reconstruction after great disaster and the changes in the social position of religion through the field research in Sumatra Island where was suffered by some great earthquakes since 2004. As a result, it became clear that the established authority of “religion" in Indonesian society came into question in the face of desolation of disaster and that forced to reconfigure the social position of religion in Indonesia.

    This research aimed to investigate the image of life and death held by people who live in metropolitan areas in Indonesia. Those areas could be said to be one of the most pluralistic society in Asia because we can see the people who speak a lot of different kinds of languages, and who live with a lot of different kinds of cultures or religions there. Related to this fact, we dare not to adopt the conventional ethnographical approach to depict the image of life and death as if it was logically integrated unity. Rather, we focused on the fact that it was talked or expressed by a person or persons to someone with some intentions in some social context. In another words, it was expressed in some practice. Accepting on this point, we tried to concentrate our attention to the practices in which people expressed their image of life and death directly. Finally we chose 3 types of such practices ritual activities, prayer meetings and grave buildings. We did research in Indonesian metropolitan cities, Medan and Jakarta, and collect concrete data like tape recordings of the rituals and the meetings or the message inscribed on the graves along with its background in order to understand the social context of those practices. As a result, we sought out the rich diversity of the discourses or expressions about death even in a "single" culture or religion. Those are far from static one as we can see in the classical ethnographies like Warneck's Die Religion der Batak, which I mentioned in our final report, but dynamic and strategically one. The strong emotions provoked by death was used by the people who addressed those expressions for various purposes; to give the consolation for remains, to establish solidarity in a clan members, to grief his miserable condition, to condemn other person, to let people pay more attention to their "sinners" etc. And also, as the data about transformation of the epigraphs showed us, it could be changed as time goes on. In short, the static descriptions of the image of life and death tend to neglect the social contexts or personal strategies that underlie those expressions. Our study showed at least a way to investigate those expressions using concrete data.

    This research project focused on the uniqueness of modernization processes in Tsugaru area, Aomori prefecture. We modernization processes examined from those two aspects, such as macro level analysis and area studies. 1.Macro level analysis : 1-1.Analysis of literature and document records on community history, community papers and city maps Hirosaki-city had been developed as a castle town in Edo-era. Its basic social unit and industrial structure were maintained until Showa era, 1960s. Spatial and urban functional transformation of Hirosaki township was brought about around 1965 and advanced rapidly within the following decades. This kind of transformation process was closely related to the changes of lifestyles and subsistence structures of rural areas around Hirosaki-city. 1-2.Analysis of statistics on demography and industry in Aomori prefecture : What characterizes the demographic changing pattern of Tsugaru area is "fast-aging "phenomena after 1990s. This phenomena was brought about by those factors as follows : a) Change in infantile mortality rate, b) Local industrial structure that built in "Dekasegi, working away from home" custom, c) Employment situation that depends on public works. 2.Area studies : 2-1.Qualitative research on the communities of Tsugaru area a) By an extensive survey around Kashiwa-mura, Kanagi-machi and Nakazato-machi of northern Tsugaru, changing process of local industrial structure was described. "Dekasegi" has been deeply built in the local subsistence structure. Dekasegi custom contributed to the rapid expansion of agricultural mechanization in this area. b) Researches on the change of subsistence activities in fishing villages around Mutsu Bay area were conducted. By the introduction of scallop cultivation, scallop fishery has become a central part of the local industry. Dekasegi workers population decreased sharply. Local women joined the scallop fishing industry. 2-2.Quantitative research on family system and on "Dekasegi" migrant workers a) Quantitative research was made among young adults for 25-34 on social behavior of marriage and family. They showed strong affiliations with the Japanese traditional stem family, called "Ie. b)"Dekasegi, working away from home" custom is closely related to the family-lifecycle and the generation within the family and community in this area. Those who experienced Dekasegi have rather positive image on Dekasegi custom, while the general image of Dekasegi is negative.

    The aim of this research is to analyse the dynamic phenomena of folk religions in the Natudomari Peninsula. The Natudomari Peninsura, enclosed on three sides by Mutu bay and on the other side by the Hakkoda mountains, is located in northeastern Japan(Aomori Prefecture). On this small peninsula there are many Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples and odou (shrines of other folk religions). People who live on this peninsula go to these to pray on festival days, but they also have many household deities, called osirasama (a household kami), ebisusama, ryuujinsama and so on, in their house, and pray household deities for every day well-being. We analysed these behaviors, and clarified the dynamic phenomena of the folk religions.     (1)The purpose of research This project aims to clarify the changing process of the life-world, social structure and culture of local societies in Tsugaru area, Aomori prefecture of Northern Japan through the method of intensive fieldwork. The research team is interdisciplinary organized of those members of different disciplines such as sociology, social psychology, cultural anthropology and nursing study. (2)Research subjects : 3 main subjects were focused as follows : 1)The process of aging in local communities 2)Depopulation and aging process of local communities 3)Case studies of local communities (3)Results : 1)The "care-managers" are caught in a "double-bind" position between clients' needs and local administrations' requirements, while they are thought to have a control over making nursing plans. It is important to create a "nursing culture" in order to settle the nursing activities into the daily life of ordinary people. 2)Population outflow of the aged 60s and 70s were relatively small compared to those of other prefectures. Intra-area migration pattern within the city is obviously seen among the Hirosaki-city residents. 3)Dekasegi custom, working away from home, which was maintained through the Taisho and Showa era, turned out to be one of the primary reasons to control the local population outflow, allowing the villagers to return their home as well as securing cash income. The characteristics of cooperative organization shows the flexible alignments supported by multiple social network, which enabled the aged villagers to make the "tradition" into an updated local culture.

    平成14年度の研究は、研究計画に従い、平成13年に文献研究に基づき明らかにしたインドネシアの公認宗教政策に関するマクロレベルの動向を踏まえた上で、トバ・バタック移民社会における価値観の変動と再編の様相およびエスニック・チャーチのそれへの関与を、実態調査に基づいたミクロレベルの分析で明らかにすることを試みた。平成13年度に二回、今年度に一回インドネシア共和国北スマトラ州のメダン市においておこなった調査では、主にトバ・バタック移民社会における(1)教会での日曜集会、(2)各種互助組合の祈祷会、(3)人生儀礼をとりあげ、都市社会におけるそれらの変容に関する基礎的なデータを集めつつ、一方でそれらの場面におけるキリスト教式の「祈り」「説教」を録画録音して収集するという作業をおこない、帰国後テープおこしと翻訳をおこなったうえでそれらの分析をおこなった。 その結果、1.都市社会の「近代的」生活が彼らの価値観を個別化・多様化していく一方で、各種互助組合などが中心になりその再編を試みる動きが存在していること(論文2)、2.それら互助組合の結成が上記の公認宗教政策がメダンに浸透していった時期と重なり、それゆえにキリスト教とエスニシティという異なった原理に基づく組織となったこと(論文1)、3.具体的な価値観の再編の場面を遺族慰撫儀礼をめぐる親族間の葛藤と、キリスト教的祈りを通しての再統合のプロセスにおいて検討し、象徴操作の専門家としての教会長老による「死」の意味づけの変更がそこで決定的な役割を果たしていること(論文3)、が明らかになった。
