The BACI trade statistics for 2005 were analyzed to determine the dependency of Asian countries on phosphorus, in particular for phosphorus ore, yellow phosphorus, chemicals, and fertilizers. The data revealed a complex set of patterns, with some countries relying heavily on just one or two countries to meet their commodity needs, and others drawing from a wide range of sources. In many cases, a strong dependency was noted on a country which itself was heavily dependent on another source for its commodity needs. Considering the geopolitical issues at hand, it is essential that special attention is paid to maintaining a stable supply of phosphorus to ensure stability in agricultural production as well as in the many industries which use chemicals containing phosphorus.

It is concerned that the sources of high-grade phosphate ore deposits could disappear within the next 100 years at current use rates. Detail review on the domestic phosphorus material flow in Japan revealed by the authors shows that phosphorus in steelmaking slag and sewage sludge is almost equivalent with that in the imported phosphate rock in the view points of the amount and the concentration, and thus they have great potential as a new artificial phosphorus resource. Recovery technologies from them which are being developed by the authors are introduced. Environmental and economical benefits given by the proposed new process are also quantitatively evaluated by the Waste Input-Output model.

TMR (Total materials requirement), which refers to the total amount of overburden and rock, were estimated as a fundamental data in this study. 10 kinds of TMR of energy resource and power generation and 62 kinds of TMR of industrial material were approximately estimated based on LCI data. Moreover, a recycle flow analysis based on TMR was proposed. From a result of a study on ELV (End-of-Life Vehicle) recycle flow, followings were shown. 1) A dismantling process which is a pretreatment process for shredding was main process for ELV recycle. Most of Metals, which have large amount of TMR, were collected in the dismantling process. 2) Copper is main component of ASR (Automobile Shredder Residue).

The recycling of valuable resources has currently became a major worldwide subject in the industries from the viewpoint of saving energy and protection of environment. Since the accumulated amount of steel product is reaching almost one billion ton in Japan, it is very important to develop the technology for the removal of tramp-elements such as tin, copper and zinc from steel scrap. In the present work, the rate of tin removal by the evaporation from carbon saturated liquid Fe-Sn-S alloy has been studied at 1, 673 K under reduced pressure.<BR>Tin evaporates from molten iron and equimolar amount of sulfur is also removed together with tin. The evaporation rate of tin increases with increasing initial sulfur content in the melt. It is confirmed that tin dissolved in liquid iron is removed in the form of SnS under the presence of sulfur in the metal. The rate of tin evaporation becomes faster with reducing the pressure in the reaction chamber. This indicates that the rate is controlled mainly by the mass transfer of SnS in the gas phase.

The reduction rate of liquid wustite contained in an iron crucible under Ar-CO, CO-CO_2 or Ar-CO-CO_2 gas mixtures has been measured by using thermobalance at 1400 and 1450℃. The experimental region of partial pressure of CO was P_<CO>=0.02-0.18 atm (Ar-CO) and P_<CO>=0.07-0.84 atm (Ar-CO-CO_2 and CO-CO_2). The apparent reduction rate became constant in the region of gas flow rate above 2.5 l/min. Under this experimental condition, the rate of reduction was controlled by the chemical reaction at the interface, and was expressed by the following equation : r=k_c(k_e-α)P_<CO> (g-oxygen/cm^2・s), where K_e and α are the equilibrium constant of the reaction among gas, liquid wustite and solid iron, and P_<CO_2>/P_<CO> in the gas phase, respectively. The apparent rate constant of the chemical reaction, k_c, was expressed by the following equation : k_c=1.18exp(-24300/RT)(g-oxygen/cm^2・s・atm). The reduction rate of liquid wustite with CO was 6 times larger than that of solid wustite.

Natural ilumenite ore was oxidized in air at the temperature lower than 700oC to convert FeTiO3 into Fe2O3 and TiO2 without the formation of pseudobrookite Fe2TiO5 which is hard material for reduction and leaching. The oxidized ore was reacted with hydrogen stream at around 500oC to reduce Fe2O3 to metallic Fe, and then the ore was supplied to the leaching process with diluted HCl to dissolve Fe to the solution. As the result, high purity TiO2 of over 97% was obtained. The greatest advantage of this process is quite low energy consumption in comparison with the conventional processes such as titanium slag process. Therefore, the basic idea of this process was proposed as a patent. The investigation on the detail mechanism and scale up test will be conducted as a next step of our research.

In this study, the dust generated during normal EAF steelmaking process was returned to the EAF by injection, and the regenerated dust was collected by using a bag filter. The amount and chemical composition of regenerated dust was continuously monitored by the particle sensor which was equiped in the dust collection system of practical EAF factory. The dust injection technology was determined to be very effective in reducing the dust treatment burden by decreasing the quantity and enhancing the quality of the regenerated dust. The regenerated dust was provided to the CaO addition process which was developed by the authors. It was confirmed that the most of zinc in the treated dust was recovered from the regenerated dust. Due to such a very good result, our partner EAF company applied the dust injection technology to their routine steelmaking operation and the total amount of dust generation was successfully reduced significantly.

The global demand for metal resources has been sharply increasing by economic growth, and the issue of sustainable resource management has also been increasingly recognized. In order to optimize the material cycles and increase resource efficiency, material flow analysis (MFA) is a powerful tool to understand the resource consumption and material cycle in the national economy. However, MFA cannot provide technological information on the recoverability and/or removability of elements from secondary resources. This study proposed a combined application of MFA with thermodynamic analysis for sustainable resource use, and conducted detailed MFAs of metals, such as nickel, chromium and molybdenum, that were concerned with thermodynamic properties of elements

Recycling is vital for sustainable management of metal resources. While closed-loop recycling is desirable, open loop recycling is more common due to the mixing of different metal-species in the end of life process. This is associated with losses in quality, and additional environmental burdens such as GHG emissions, as well. A tool was developed that makes possible to estimate the environmental burdens associated with these quality losses. Application to ferrous materials used in passenger cars showed the significance of improvement in end-of-life separation technologies in mitigating the nation-wide GHG emissions. Furthermore, a mathematical model was developed that is capable of tracing the fate of materials over time across products under explicit consideration of products lives, recovery, refining, and use.

Reduction of ZnO in EAF dust after the treatment with CaO by carbon or metallic iron was conducted as an optional technology for metallic Zn recovery from the dust. The specimens were six gram mixture of the reaction product from lime addition process and carbon at ZnO/C or ZnO/Fe=1/1 in molar ratio. This mixture was heated for given period at 1000 to 1100°C in Ar flow or vacuum. After heating, the condensed matters deposited on the cooling part in the apparatus was collected and analyzed by XRD and ICP. The experimental result of ZnO reduction process using the reaction products from lime addition process showed that pure metallic Zn was successfully obtained in the present work. In the Waelz process, the product is crude ZnO containing significant amount of halogens while the CaO treated dust is basically halogen-free. It may be possible to collect liquid pure zinc by the reduction of CaO treated dust with iron if the temperature of cooling part is precisely controlled.

Magnetic separation was applied to the recovery of manganese and phosphorus from dephosphorization slag and chromium from EAF slag. Dephosphorization slag consists of phosphorus enriched phase and manganese enriched phase together with matrix phase. The magnetic property of each phase has found to be significantly different. In the present experiment, about 31%of phosphorus enriched slag could be recovered at untrapped 3 of 0. 30T and about 14%of manganese enriched slag could be recovered with less than 20%of phosphorus enriched phase contamination at trapped of 0. 03T, particle size of less than 32μm with physical agitation. Chromium was also recovered from EAF slag as iron-chromite with about 50%of Cr. It was thus demonstrated from the present experimental results that phosphorus, manganese and chromium can be recovered from steelmaking slag which can be recognized as their secondary resource.

The oxidation by the fluidized bed reactor and the acid leaching experiments were conducted using the natural ilmenite ores from Australia and Mozambique to know the most suitable condition for the newly developed rutile extraction process. The results are summarized as follows: (1) From the analyses by XRD and EPMA of the sample before and after oxidation, it was found that ilmenite (FeTiO_3) was oxidized by fluidized bed reactor to form the two phases of pseudobrookite (Fe_2TiO_5) and rutile (TiO_2). The oxidation reaction of 2FeTiO_3(s)+1/2 O_2(g)=Fe_2TiO_5(s)+TiO_2(s) almost completed in about 20 minutes at temperatures of 1173 and 1223 K both for the two kinds of ore in 5%O_2-Ar gas mixture. The experiment that changed the cooling rate after the oxidation was also conducted because the nature like crystalline of the rutile formed might be influenced by the cooling rate after the oxidation by fluidized bed. (2) The leaching of the oxidized ore was carried out both with sulfuric and phosphoric acid solution. The fractional leach rate of the pseudobrookite tended to become larger with decreasing the cooling rate, and the slow cooling of 5K/min was more suitable. On the other hand, the leach rate of the rutile was 10% that was about one-third of the case of air-cooled. Therefore, the effect of the cooling rate was significant in terms of the fractional leach rate of the rutile. (3) The process assessment for the two processes which were the oxidation followed by diluted-acid leaching and the conventional sulfuric acid processes was conducted by calculating and comparing the amount of energy required and the amount of the CO_2 exhaust. Based on the stoichiometric oxidation reaction, the amount of energy required in the process proposed by the present authors was estimated 11.4 MJ less than the sulfuric acid process, and that of the CO_2 exhaust was 0.9kg less per 1kg TiO_2, respectively. This indicates that the proposed process is superior and favorable compared to the conventional sulfuric acid process.

NOx is one of the typical air pollutants and is the main source of acid rain. The origin of NOx in air can be classified into three groups as "thermal", "prompt" and "fuel NOx". Among them, thermal NOx is formed by the reaction between N_2 and O_2 in air at high temperature, so that it forms easily in the combustion atmosphere under the presence of adequate catalyst. Since NOx consists of maily NO except for some special cases, the reduction of NOx would be equivalent to the reduction of NO. However, chemical mechanism on the formation or decomposition of NO on the surface of the catalyst is not well known yet due to the lack of kinetic information. The present work aims to study the kinetics on the formation/decomposition mechanism of thermal NOx on the surface of oxide catalysts. Iron oxide (Fe_3O_4) is selected as an oxide catalyst because the steel is major component of the combustion reactor and Fe_3O_4 is often forms in the reactor at high temperature combustion atmosphere. The rate of formation of NO from N_2-O_2 gas mixture has first been studied in the present work. The rate was always depends on the gas flow rate and it was hard to eliminate the effect of gas phase mass transfer. Therefore, the isotope exchange technique was tried to apply in this reaction. However, the background of mass peak of 31 which corresponded to ^<15>NO was very high, indicating the precise measurement of the exchange reaction rate of ^<15>NO would be very difficult. Thus, the rate of decomposition of NO was measured in the present work by impinging Ar-NO gas mixture onto Fe_3O_4. As a result, NO was decomposed to a certain extent with Fe_30_4 catalyst. It was found that the rate of decomposition was independent of gas flow rate in the temperature range from 600 to 950℃ and proportional to the partial pressure of NO, indicating that the decomposition would be controlled by the chemical reaction on the surface of catalyst and the dissociation of NO molecule would be predominant. The temperature dependence of the decomposition rate was found to be very large and its apparent activation energy was evaluated as approximately 400kJ/mol. In the present wok, other oxide catalysts such as TiO_2 and Cr_2O_3 were also used and Cr_2O_3 was found to be more effective catalyst for NO decomposition. Therefore, detail kinetic study on the decomposition of NO on the surface of Cr_2O_3 based oxide catalyst in our future work. It is known that Cr_2O_3 forms wide solid solution with iron oxide, Al_2O_3 and so on, so that it is quite interesting to study the kinetics of NO decomposition on Cr_2O_3 solid solution as a function of catalyst composition. For this purpose, we have also determined thermodynamic properties of FeO-Cr_2O_3 iron chromite solid solution at high temperature. Such information would be very useful to reveal detail reaction mechanism of NO decomposition on the surface of chromite catalyst.

Alumina content in the iron ore imported to Japan is increasing year by year and some problems for the blast furnace operation due to the use of the high alumina containing sinter are reported. Since all of iron ore used in Japanese iron making companies is imported from overseas such as Australia, Brazil and so on, the problems caused by the lower grade ore should be solved as soon as possible. Though the true mechanism of harmful effect of alumina on the blast furnace operation is not known up till now due to the very complex phenomena in the blast furnace, it is generally considered that the alumina in the sinter would act the important role mainly on the behavior of primary melt formed in the sinter during the reduction. Keeping such background in view, this study aims to clarify the mechanism of harmful effect of alumina on the blast furnace operation. The behavior of primary melt, which is formed in the sinter at the cohesive zone of the blast furnace has been simulated by dripping molten slag through iron or oxide funnel. The effects of basicity, A12O3 and Fe_tO_<>O contents in the five kinds of slags on the dripping temperature) and hold-up on the funnel have been discussed. It was found that the eutectic melt formed in the sinter would play important role for the dripping behavior of slag melt in the blast furnace or hold-up phenomenon of slag melt among fine pore in reduced iron and ore particle. Al_2O_<>increases the hold-up degree of the slag melt on the funnel and its effect becomes much significant in the acidic and low Fe_tO_<>O containing slag. It was estimated that the increase of the slag hold-up by Al_2O_<> in the ore could result in the harmful effect on the permeability resistance and indirect reduction rate of the sinter in the blast furnace.

It is known that many Fe-Cu based alloys have wide miscibility gap in liquid phase, and by utilizing such phase separation some Fe-Cu based alloys are used as an electrically conductive and a soft-magnetic materials in which fine Cu-rich phase precipitates on iron matrix. Fe-Cu-Si and Fe-Cu-P are typical examples of such alloy systems. Fe-Cu-Si and Fe-Cu-P ternaries are also basic alloy systems formed in the remelting process of incinerated ash which is recently being developed. Moreover, it is important to understand thermodynamic properties of Fe-Cu system to remove copper from remelted steel scrap. In spite of such importance, phase diagrams of Fe-Cu based ternary alloys are not well established. The objective of the present work is to establish phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties of Fe-Cu-Si and Fe-Cu-P ternary alloys. In 1995, solubility of FeSi compound, solid Si in liquid phase and tie lines between two immiscible liquid phases in Fe-Cu-Si system have been measured in the temperature range from 1250゚C to 1550゚C.As the results, observed phase equilibria differed from the literature phase diagram proposed by Chang et al. In 1996, tie lines between solid iron and copper-rich melt in Fe-Cu-P system were determined at 1250゚C by solid-liquid diffusion couple technique. Measured phase equilibria of Fe-Cu-P system also differed from the literature phase diagram. Phase diagrams of Fe-Cu-Si and Fe-Cu-P systems were thermodynamically assessed based on the sub-regular solution model.

The tramp elements such as Cu, Sn, Sb etc. in steel scrap can not be removed by the traditional steelmaking process. Therefore, economical prcesses to remove these impurities have to be developed for the recycling of steel scrap. Present work dealt with the thermodmynamics on the removal of tramp elements, mainly Cu, in liquid iron by using sulfide flux. The present investigation consisted of following four parts. 1) Phase equilibria in the basic system of Fe-S-C ternary melt were measured and thermodynamic properties of this system were evaluated by applying interstitial solution model. 2) The activities of Cu, Sn, Sb in Fe-S-C_<sat>. Melts were experimentally determined. 3) The distribution ratio of Cu, Sn, Sb Ni, Cr, Mn or Mo between FeS-Na_2S flux and Fe-C_<sat>. melt was measured at 1673K. The addition of Na_2S to FeS increased the distribution ratio of Cu, L_<Cu>=(mass%Cu)_<flux>/[mass%Cu]_<iron>, from 9 at X_<NaS_<0.5>>=0 to the maximum of L_<Cu>=24 at X_<Nas_<0.5>>=0.4. Na_2S also considerably lowered sulfur content in liquid iron. The activity coefficient of CuS_<0.5> in flux was evaluated to discuss the effect of Na_2S on L_<Cu>. It was founs that Na_2S decreased gamma CuS_<0.5>, so that L_<Cu> increased in spite of the significant decrease of sulfur potential. The distribution ratios of Sn, Sb, Ni, Cr and Mo were very low, while L_<Mn> was very high. 4) Effect of alkaline or alkaline earth metal sulfides on L_<Cu> was studied. Similar to the effect of Na_2S, Li_2S, K_2S, SrS or BaS increased L_<Cu> and lowered sulfur content in liquid iron. The maximum of L_<Cu> in each flux were about 20 to 30. Thermodynamic consideration was made to discuss the removal limit of Cu from liquid iron by sulfide fluxes. It was concluded from the present work that Cu can be removed from liquid iron by sulfide flux. However, L_<Cu> was not high enough for the practical application. Therefore, we need more effort to develop the effective Cu removal process from remelted steel scrap.

    More details Close

    More details Close

    More details Close

    More details Close
