    SUMMARY The solution of the remote reference method, a frequently used technique in magnetotelluric (MT) data processing, can be viewed as a product of the two-input–multiple-output relationship between the local electromagnetic field and the reference field at a remote station. By applying a robust estimator to the two-input–multiple-output system, one can suppress the influence of outliers in the local magnetic field as well as those in the local electric field based on regression residuals. Therefore, this study develops a new robust remote reference estimator with the aid of robust multivariate linear regression. By applying the robust multivariate regression S-estimator to the multiple-output system, the present work derives a set of equations for robust estimates of the transfer function, noise variances, and the scale of the Mahalanobis distance simultaneously. The noise variances are necessary for the multivariate analysis to normalize the residuals of dependent variables. The Mahalanobis distance, a distance measure for multivariate data, is a commonly used indicator of outliers in multivariate statistics. By updating those robust estimates iteratively, the new robust remote reference estimator seeks the transfer function that minimizes the robust scale estimate of the Mahalanobis distance. The developed estimator can avoid bias in the MT transfer function even if there are significant noises in the reference magnetic field and handle outlying data more robustly than previously proposed robust remote reference estimators. The authors applied the developed method to a synthetic data set and real-world data. The test results demonstrate that the developed method downweights outliers in the local electric and magnetic fields and gives an unbiased transfer function.

    The comprehensive Earth science database, GeoRef, is introduced in this paper. GeoRef is one of the Earth science databases with the largest number of references (about 2.2 million), and is managed by American Geological Institute (AGI). GeoRef provides not only an environment for searching references, but also for delivering the necessary references and for making written reference lists.<BR>To verify the usefulness of GeoRef, we compared several cases of searches using GeoRef, Web of Science and Swet Scan. Although GeoRef was not able to pick up more references than Web of Science, GeoRef generally collected suitable references and showed its usefulness of searching particularly in the geological category. However, it was revealed that GeoRef was relatively slow to incorporate the latest information.

    The fifth round of repetitive seismic survey in Sakurajima volcano and a qualitative forward modeling of the annual variation in reflectivity at the depth 4.9km are described. The seismic survey has been conducted on December 2013, as a round of repetitive seismic project since December 2009. The seismic survey includes six shot points and 74 temporary stations. The deviation seismic sections are obtained and the profile shows that there are significant variation in the horizons at 4.9km depth and 8.0km depth. A qualitative forward modeling of the horizon at 4.9km depth is discussed on the basis of the compiled deviation profiles for five years. A sandwich layer model is introduced and its parameter study suggests that the annual variation of the relative reflectivity may explained by decreasing of both density by several percent and velocity down to 80% in the sandwich layer of several tens meter thickness.

    We conducted an active seismic experiment in and around Aira caldera in December 2013, five years after a similar experiment conducted in 2008 in order to detect temporal changes of seismic structure beneath Sakurajima volcano and Aira caldera. We deployed 280 temporary seismic stations, 90% of which were at the same locations used in 2008. Six explosions (S1 to S6) of 200 kg or 300 kg of dynamite were sequentially detonated during the night of 5 December 2013. All of the shot locations expect S3 are less than 60 m from the 2008 locations. We undertook continuous seismic recording for 9 h during the night: the obtained records contain both the waveforms excited by the six shots and those from an explosive eruption and volcanic tremor. To evaluate the changes of subsurface structure beneath Sakurajima volcano since 2008, we calculated cross-correlations of waveforms recorded at all of the recording stations that duplicated those of 2008. The most cross-correlations are equal to or greater than 0.7.

    東北・北海道を含む実際の海底地形と海岸線を4面体要素で離散化した有限要素法のシミュレーションによって虚部のインダクションベクトルの振る舞いを明らかにした。主な成果は次の通りである。 ・海岸線効果および海峡効果と海洋効果(海底地形効果)を区別する為、海底深度を500 m, 1500 m, 3000 mそれぞれ一定にして海岸線を考慮したモデルと、実際の海底地形も考慮したモデルとでシミュレーション比較を行った。海底深度を一定にして、海岸線効果のみを考慮したシミュレーションでは、虚部のインダクションベクトルは、長周期において日本海沿岸、太平洋沿岸で東西方向の内陸を向く対称的パターン、短周期付近で海側を向く放射パターンを示した。津軽海峡の海峡効果はあまり明瞭でなかった。この結果は、昨年の差分法で明らかにした単純な長方形の離島モデルと調和的であった。海底の深さは、ベクトルの方向はほぼ同じで、振幅を定数倍にする線形効果のみであった。 ・海岸線と海底地形を考慮したシミュレーションでは、一部の長周期帯において、東北地方の太平洋側で虚部のベクトルが非常に小さくなり、非対称的パターンを示す結果になった。日本海溝の影響は、地球内部が均一ならば太平洋沿岸の虚部インダクションベクトルを殆ど0にする影響を及ぼすことが新たに分かった。 ・研究テーマの出発点である東北地方北部のほぼ全域の虚部インダクションベクトルが、長周期側で北側を向く傾向は、海洋効果、海岸線効果、海峡効果いずれでも説明不可能であることが明らかになった。昨年新たに採用した推進方策である、4面体要素による有限要素法のシミュレーションを実装することで、この結論に早く到達できた。

    Regarding geofluid distribution, flow and properties in the Japanese Islands, we estimated the distribution of geofluid by experiments and observational studies on seismic velocity-electrical conductivity of rock-fluid system, and clarified that the fluid dehydrated from the subducted slab ascends to the earth surface by geophysical-geochemical observation and numerical simulation. Geochemical observations and numerical simulations revealed that these deep fluids are high-salt and high 3He / 4He fluids represented by Arima-type saltwater, and that they are distributed along the Arima area and the Median Tectonic Line in the Kii Peninsula. The flux of deep fluid in the fault zone was estimated through physical measurement of flow rate and water pressure and measurement of chemical and isotopic composition.

    Ionic electrical conductivity of NaCl-H2O fluid as a function of pressure (0.2-2.0GPa), temperature (673-2000 K), and NaCl concentration (0.6-9.6 wt %) was investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based on an H2O molecular model developed by our previous study. Highly conductive zones located from 10 to 15 km depth in intraplate earthquake zones of northern east Japan back arc (Ogawa et al., GRL, 2001) can be interpreted by the presence of NaCl-H2O fluid with the salinity of 4 wt %.

    The purpose of our study is to provide an explanation for experimental results on electrical conductivity variations for rhyolite melt. To detect melt processes using electrical conductivity, we carried out conductivity measurements on synthesized rhyolite. We also developed a cell-type lattice model to clarify the inter-connected conductivity mechanism of rock melt. We quantified electrical conduction networks in rock and evaluated electrical conductivity models of melt.

    Employed the Australian-wide geomagnetic array data, we investigated the mechanism of the outstanding power spectrum density of geomagnetic variation corresponding to M2 tide observed at Alice Springs, central Australia, and estimated 3-D electrical conductivity profile in the uppermantle beneath entire Australian continent after elimination of the tidal effect. A distribution of the large geomagnetic power spectrum density corresponding to M2 tide is consistent with the land surface conductivity distribution rather than periodic current distribution. The upper mantle conductivity model beneath Australian continent clearly revealed the geological terrains, in particular Yilgarn and Pilbara Cratons.

    We installed the two telluric observation sites, the dipole spans of which are about 1 km, in the central part of Australian Continent in order to elucidate reference electrical conductivity profile in continental upper mantle. The electrical conductivity profile analyzed using the obtained data shows more resistive than the Canadian Shield's result. We also developed a procedure in which electrical conductivity profile could be calculated from arbitral chemical composition among the principal five elements (Ca, Fe, Mg, Al, Si)and from the laboratory experimental data of the mineral conductivity. Standard chemical composition model in continental upper mantle gave more conductive profile than the observed one through the procedure. The result reveals that standard chemical composition and electrical conductivity profile in continental upper mantle is not consistent with each other.

    Petit-spot is a young volcanic field(<1 Ma) discovered on the Early Cretaceous(〜130 Ma) northwestern Pacific Plate. The volcanoes belong to petit-spot are very small knolls on the abyssal plane(〜6000 m water depth) and erupted strong to moderate alkaline basalt, generally including deep-seated xenoliths. The volcanic field is far 600 km away from the Japan Trench, any spreading centers and any hotspots. Therefore, the volcanic activity is not adequate for any existence volcanic models on Earth. In order to understand this petit spot volcanism, we've been taking multidisciplinary surveys. The main results for three years' research including the cruises using JAMSTEC R/V YOKOSUKA and KAIREI(YK05-06, KR05-10, KR06-03, KR07-06, KR07-07 and YK07-15) and shore-based research were listed below. FY2005 : Two other small knolls were discovered as the petit-spot volcanoes with SHINKAI 6500 submersible, and alkaline basalt samples were collected from the knolls. Several acoustic explorations on the petit-spot knolls and NW Pacific area with a single channel streamer(SCS). Five Ocean Bottom Electro-Magnetometers(OBEMs) were deployed and recovered around the volcanic field. The crustal heat flow measurements were taken using with Miniaturized temperature data loggers. FY2006 : Multinarrow-beam bathymetry mapping and SCS acoustic explorations were taken in the petit-spot volcanic field and surrounding area. FY2007 : Three broad band ocean bottom seismometers(BBOBSs) and three OBEMs were deployed in the volcanic field to observe the intraplate seismicity and the melt supply process in the upper mantle. Several mantle xenoliths included petit-spot alkaline basalts were sampled during SHINKAI 6500 dives. In addition to this, another petit-spot volcanic field was discovered on the outer rise near the Japan Trench. These results were published on both international and domestic journals, presented at scientific meetings and press releases.

    今年度は,(1)アジア大陸東縁で測定された地電位差データと東北日本海・北西太平洋それぞれで得られた海底電位差データを取り寄せ,それらのデータの一次解析を行い,(2)マルチスケールに対応した3次元電気伝導度構造解析プログラムに関して,アダプティブ有限要素法を応用するため,特にメッシュジェネレーションの解析プログラムとそのメッシュ情報を有限要素計算本体部分へ渡すインターフェースの改良を行った.(1)では,各観測点1年間の観測のデータから従来の方法で電場と磁場の応答関数を求め,一次元の構造解析を行った.その結果大陸のデータからの結果は相対的にスタグナントスラブが存在するマントル遷移層において,特に上部400km付近で,日本海や北西太平洋の構造に比べて電気伝導度が低い傾向が示唆された.これらの序報は2005年9月の地球電磁気地球惑星圏学会,同11月の「地球深部スラブ」研究集会で発表し,研究費の一部をこれらの旅費に使用した.(2)に関しては,マルチスケール解析を念頭において,分解能が良い場所を定量的に細かく解析する方法としてアダプティブ有限要素法を応用し,アダプティブメッシュを導入しやすいベルリン大学で開発されたTetGenメッシュジェネレーションプログラムを改良した.また有限要素法本体部分の解析では,既に3次元の電磁場解析用に実用化されている辺要素有限要素法を用いる方針で,メッシュジェネレーションのインターフェースを有限要素法のプログラムにあわせる部分の改良を行った.参考になる辺要素有限要素法のプログラムパッケージは市販されているのでこれを購入した.

    Electrical conductivity measurements carried out at mid-to lower crustal temperature and pressure on various rocks and minerals showed a stable and reversible trend. To obtain such stabilized conductivity data, repeated heating and cooling before measurements were required, and the samples should be maintained for long duration at maximum temperature. In our study, we carefully considered measurement orientation for rock samples. Conductivity measurements perpendicular and parallel to mineral foliation in some rocks indicated an order difference in conductivity at the same temperature range. We also obtained unique values of activation energy for various samples. These values were examined and compared with those of other rock type groups obtained by former studies. To evaluate conduction mechanism, mineral compositions and petrofablic of recovered samples, we conducted EPMA analysis after electrical conductivity measurements. This analysis proves that there is no major change in the chemical or physical aspects of the samples before and after measurement. Consequently, experimental results can be compared with those of former EM soundings. Remarkably, conductivity of the mid-to lower crust inferred from field measurements corresponds to that of rock samples.

    This project aimed to study electrical signature of the stagnant slab whose presence was well established by seismic tomography, and was carried out in the Northeaster district of China and the Primorski region of Russia for three years from 2003 to 2005 fiscal year. In Jilin and Liaoning provinces of the NE part of China, observations of electric field variations were made by using telephone lines collaborating with Professor G.Z.Zhao of Institute of Geology, China Earthquake Administration. We successfully obtained high-quality electric field data from 3 lines in Jilin and 4 lines in Liaoning provinces. Three components of geomagnetic field variations were also recorded at Changchun magnetic observatory where an Ocean Hemisphere Magnetometer System has been operating since 1998. We also investigated past results of magnetotelluric surveys done by Chinese, and made a map of near-surface conductance in the study area which is useful for correcting galvanic effects on long period induction responses by land-ocean distribution or near-surface conductivity structure. In the Primorski district of Far-east Russia, we collaborated with Professor V.A.Nikiforov and his group. Though we spent much time to get permissions from federal authorities more than expected, we finally obtained a record of geo-electric variations, by using two pairs of electrodes that were installed about 30km apart from each other. Local telephone lines were used to connect these electrodes that enabled us to make measurements nearly in N-S and E-W directions. We also obtained some magnetotelluric results that had been done by Russian side. We carefully analyzed data thus obtained, and studied the one-dimensional distribution and lateral variation of the electrical conductivity in the mantle beneath the study are down to the transition zone. Combining results from this conductivity study, P-wave tomography, and high pressure experiments, we estimated the distribution of water in the mantle of this region. Results obtained in the present study were published in international journals as listed below.

    内陸地震発生に地殻流体(塩水)がどの程度関与しているかを解明するために高温高圧下での高濃度塩水の電気伝導度を分子動力学シミュレーションにより初めて解明した.このデータにより震源域の電気伝導度構造から震源域に存在する塩水の量を見積もることが可能となる.
