    More details Close

The linear stability of the Stuart vortices, which is a model of arrays of vortices often observed in the atmosphere and the oceans, in rotating stratified fluids is investigated by local and modal stability analysis. As in the case of the two-dimensional (2-D) Taylor–Green vortices, five types of instability appear in general: the pure-hyperbolic instability, the strato-hyperbolic instability, the rotational-hyperbolic instability, the centrifugal instability and the elliptic instability. The condition for each instability and the estimate of the growth rate derived by Hattori & Hirota (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 967, 2023, A32) are shown to also be useful for the Stuart vortices, which supports their applicability to general flows. The properties of each instability depend on stratification and rotation in a way similar to the case of the 2-D Taylor–Green vortices. For the Stuart vortices, however, the centrifugal instability and the elliptic instability become more dominant than the three hyperbolic instabilities in comparison to the 2-D Taylor–Green vortices; this is explained by the larger ratios of the maximum vorticity and the strain rate at the elliptic stagnation points to the strain rate at the hyperbolic stagnation points. Direct correspondence between the modal and local stability results is further established by comparing unstable modes to solutions to the local stability equations; this is useful for identifying the types of modes since the mechanism of instability is readily known in the local stability analysis. This helps us to discover the modes of the ring-type elliptic instability, which have been predicted only theoretically.

Drift currents induced by linear waves are considered in a general manner by imposing the topological constraint (or isovortical condition) on disturbances. The evolution equation for the Lagrangian displacement field is essential for generating such isovortical motions. The wave energy is naturally defined up to of the second order, which includes the inner product of the mean flow and the drift current. This drift current is computed analytically for the case of the Kelvin waves in a vortex tube.

    More details Close

In a bounded shear flow of the compressible fluid model, resonant interaction among the acoustic waves and the continuum modes is fully investigated by the Laplace transform. The interaction stems from the degeneracy of the point and continuous spectra, which is possible since the linearized fluid equation is governed by a non-selfadjoint operator. For the case of uniform shear, three-dimensional disturbances exhibit an algebraic growth (∝ t) of a certain continuum mode. The nonuniformity of shear does not allow the presence of such a degenerated point spectrum, which implies the Landau damping (or growth) of the acoustic wave.

A numerical simulation code is developed for solving the extended magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations, which includes two-fluid effects. In particular, for the purpose of simulating the experiments of magnetic helicity injection into plasmas, the appropriate boundary condition is formulated to impose voltages on the conductive wall. This simulation code can estimate self-organized current that is eventually generated through complicated turbulent process followed by magnetic helicity injection. A comparison is made with the MHD theoretical prediction and the two-fluid effects on relaxation are investigated.

A mechanism for explosive magnetic reconnection in high-temperature plasma is investigated by analyzing the nonlinear evolution of a tearing instability in a two-fluid model that includes the effects of electron inertia and temperature. A high-resolution simulation of this model shows an explosive tendency for the nonlinear growth, where it is newly found that the explosive widening of the X-shaped current layer occurs locally around the reconnection point. The reason for the onset of this locally enhanced reconnection is explained theoretically by developing a novel nonlinear variational method. The theoretical model proves that the local reconnection can release the magnetic energy more efficiently than the global one and the estimated scaling of the explosive growth rate agrees well with the simulation results.

Toward understanding the formation mechanisms of non-uniform spatial structures in astrophysical and laboratory plasmas, general mode-coupling theory is developed for global (or long wavelength) fluctuations, for which the conventional local (or short wavelength) approximation is not valid. By developing new mathematical techniques that base on the theory of infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian system, the global mode-coupling, which may include continuous spectrum, is successfully formulated and it is applied to specific phenomena.

We have studied the self-organization mechanism in flowing plasmas to explore the diversity of structures created in space and astronomical systems, and also examined the applicability of the high-beta equilibrium for advanced-fusion concept. 1.Results of Theoretical Studies We have developed some innovative methods for the analysis of equilibria and stability of flowing plasmas. Unlike the conventional theories of stationary (non-flowing) plasmas, the analysis of flowing plasmas may not invoke the well-known methods of spectral decomposition or energy principle. Analyzing the topological singularities of the non-canonical Hamiltonian formalisms, we have succeeded to characterize the basic vertical structures of flow-field coupling in terms of Casimir invariants (helicities). The corresponding variational principle yields a Lyapunov function, whose coercivity warrants the stability of the "Beltrami fields", the minimizer of the variational principle. The theory has been applied to explain the structural instabilities in solar corona, high-beta equilibria in Jupiter's magnetosphere, as well as new-type of flowing equilibria in Proto-RT and RT-1 devices. 2.Results of Experimental Studies We have demonstrated stable formation of super-sonic (Mach number > 5) rotating plasma in the Proto-RT Device. The Proto-RT device can confine a non-neutral (pure electron) plasma in a "magnetosphere-like" configuration. A non-neutral plasma produces a flowing (spinning) equilibrium by its self-electric field. By applying an internal electric field in a quasi-neutral plasma, we can achieve a similar flowing plasma. We have established a unified understanding of non-neutral and flowing plasmas : (1)We have demonstrated stable confinement of non-neutral plasma in a magnetic-surface configuration,; (2)By applying a radial electric field, we have demonstrated the self-organization of stable super-sonic flowing plasma ; (3)We have demonstrated the production of a new branch of equilibrium by the effect of fast flow ; (4)We have developed new technologies to construct magnetosphere-like plasma confinement device.

  1. Interaction between plasma rotation and pressure driven modes in LHD

    More details Close

  2. Effects of flows on MHD stability of LHD plasma
