    Abstract Spin dynamics in the van der Waals antiferromagnet FeGa2S4 with triangular lattices are investigated using magnetometry, neutron scattering, and muon spin relaxation measurements. The characteristic spin relaxation time is thoroughly clarified over thirteen orders of magnitude. Although the temperature dependence of DC and AC susceptibilities recalls a conventional spin-glass transition, nonlinear susceptibilities showing no divergences at the anomalous temperature, T* = 16.87(7) K, deny that and instead hint at other mechanisms. Elastic neutron scattering together with previously measured muon results depict a slowly fluctuated (~10-5 sec) spin state above T*. In juxtaposing the underlying simplest structure among frustrated magnets with an intricate hierarchy of time scales, FeGa2S4 can be a playground for studying temporal spin correlations in the two-dimensional limit.

    Abstract Spin- and charge- stripe order has been extensively studied in the superconducting cuprates, among which underdoped La2−xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) is an archetype with static spin stripes at low temperatures. An intriguing, but not completely understood, phenomenon in LSCO is that the stripes are tilted away from the high-symmetry Cu-Cu directions. Using high-resolution neutron scattering on LSCO with x = 0.12, we find two coexisting phases at low temperatures, one with static spin stripes and the other with fluctuating ones, both sharing the same tilt angle. Our numerical calculations using the doped Hubbard model elucidate the tilting’s origin, attributing it to anisotropic next-nearest neighbor hopping $${t}^{ { \prime} }$$, consistent with the material’s slight orthorhombicity. Our results underscore the model’s success in describing specific details of the ground state of this real material and highlight the role of $${t}^{ { \prime} }$$ in the Hamiltonian, revealing the delicate interplay between stripes and superconductivity across theoretical and experimental contexts.

    Producing a polarized lanthanum (La) target with high polarization and long relaxation time is crucial for realizing time-reversal violation experiments using polarized neutron beams. We use a LaAlO3 crystal doped with a small amount of Nd3+ ions for the polarized lanthanum target. Optimizing the amount of Nd3+ ions is considerably important because the achievable polarization and relaxation time strongly depend on this amount. We established a fundamental method to grow single crystals of Nd3+:LaAlO3 using an optical floating zone method that employs halogen lamps and evaluated the crystals with the dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) method for polarizing nuclear spins. Two crystal samples were grown by ourselves and evaluated with the DNP at 1.3 K and 2.3 T for the first time, except for the target materials of protons. The enhancement of nuclear magnetic resonance signals for 139La and 27Al was successfully observed, and the enhancement factors were eventually 3.5 ± 0.3 and 13 ± 3 for the samples with Nd3+ ions of 0.05 and 0.01 mol. %, respectively. These enhancement factors correspond to absolute vector polarizations of 0.27% ± 0.02% (Nd3+ 0.05 mol. %) and 1.4% ± 0.3% (Nd3+ 0.01 mol. %). Although the obtained polarizations are still low, they are acceptable as a first step. The combination scheme of the crystal growth and the evaluation of the crystals is found to be effectively applicable for optimizing the amount of Nd3+ ions for improving the performance of the polarized target.

    Abstract We synthesized a new high-entropy-alloy-type (HEA-type) superconductor (Fe,Co,Ni,Cu,Ga)Zr2 with a Tc of 2.9 K. The EDX analyses revealed that the actual composition of the transition-metal site (Tr-site) is Tr = Fe0.17(1)Co0.18(2)Ni0.21(2)Cu0.25(1)Ga0.19(1), which gives the configurational entropy of mixing ΔSmix = 1.60 R for the Tr site. Neutron powder diffraction revealed that the sample has a tetragonal CuAl2-type (space group: #140). The lattice constant of a monotonically decreases with decreasing temperature, but the lattice constant of c does not exhibit a clear shrinkage. Isotropic displacement parameter for both the Tr and Zr sites are large, which is probably caused by the HEA-type Tr site. The small temperature dependences of Uiso for both sites also indicate the presence of the local structural disorder in (Fe,Co,Ni,Cu,Ga)Zr2. From electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements, bulk superconductivity was confirmed.

    Neutron diffraction experiments have been performed on single crystalline samples of CePtSi3. We found that the incommensurate magnetic propagation vector τ1 = (±0.283, 0, 0) in the phase I (2.2 ∼ 4.8 K) switches to the commensurate vectors τ2 = (±0.25, 0, 0) and τ3 = (±0.25, 0, ±1) in the phase III (∼ 2.8 K) at zero field. Although the magnetic structure of CePtSi3 in the phase I is a spin density wave similar to those in CeRhSi3, CeIrSi3, and CePdSi3, the magnetic structure in the phase III is commensurate unlike other CeTSi3 (T = Rh, Ir, Pd) compounds.

    The effect of off-plane impurity on superconductivity and non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior in the layered heavy-fermion compound CeCo$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$In$_5$ is investigated by specific heat, magnetization, and electrical resistivity measurements. These measurements reveal that the superconducting (SC) transition temperature T$_c$ monotonically decreases from 2.3 K (x=0) to 0.8 K (x=0.20) with increasing x, and then the SC order disappears above x=0.25. At the same time, the Ni substitution yields the NFL behavior at zero field for x=0.25, characterized by the -ln T divergence in specific heat divided by temperature, C$_p$/T, and magnetic susceptibility, M/B. The NFL behavior in magnetic fields for x=0.25 is quite similar to that seen at around the SC upper critical field in pure CeCoIn$_5$, suggesting that both compounds are governed by the same antiferromagnetic quantum criticality. The resemblance of the doping effect on the SC order among Ni- , Sn-, and Pt-substituted CeCoIn5 supports the argument that the doped carriers are primarily responsible for the breakdown of the SC order. The present investigation further reveals the quantitative differences in the trends of the suppression of superconductivity between Ce(Co,Ni)In$_5$ and the other alloys, such as the rates of decrease in T$_c$, dT$_c$/dx, and specific heat jump at T$_c$, d($\Delta$C$_p$/T$_c$)/dx. We suggest that the occupied positions of the doped ions play an important role in the origin of these differences.

    The effects of Ni substitution on Ce(Cu1-xNix)2Si2 have been studied by specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements. The specific heat measurement has revealed that the enhanced quantum fluctuations around an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point are markedly suppressed by Ni substitution, and that the Fermi liquid state recovers in the Nirich region (x > 0.12). The characteristic T-linear dependence of the resistivity has been observed at approximately x ~ 0.10 together with a sign of superconductivity. The variation of n in the form of rho - rho0 = aT^n against Tmax^1, at which the resistivity peaks, coincides with the case of high-pressure experiments on pure CeCu2Si2. The anomalous T-linear behavior appears to occur in the crossover region from the Kondo regime to the valence fluctuation regime rather than in the conventional antiferromagnetic quantum critical region.

    The aim of the project is to develop a high-pressure apparatus for neutron diffraction experiments, which is available to keep a high-pressure condition of 4-5 GPa, and to get an additional insight into magnetic phases of CeNiGe3 under high pressure. We have succeeded in observing magnetic Bragg reflections with our high-pressure apparatus under high pressure, though the applied pressure is lower than the target pressure (4-5 GPa). In addition, we found that the incommensurate magnetic propagation wave vector of the low-pressure antiferromagnetic phase possibly shifts to a commensurate point, indicating a possible incommensurate-to-commensurate magnetic transition under high pressure. Further upgrade of our high-pressure apparatus is under consideration.

    In order to elucidate the nature of spin fluctuations of cuprate superconductors, we conducted a study by the inelastic neutron scattering measurements. Utilizing high-resolution experimental techniques, we successfully found the evidence of two types of spin fluctuations in the superconducting phase of cuprate, and clarified a strong coupling between particular spin fluctuations and optical phonons. We also developed a device capable of spin polarization of high-energy neutrons and introduced it into the spectrometer as J-PARC. Furthermore, we were able to examine the feasibility of a new experimental method called the neutron spin prism method, which can be achieved by combining the polarized device and a superconducting magnet.

    構成元素数を3つに減らした,ミディアムエントロピー合金T-CoNi(T=クロムCr, マンガンMn, 鉄Fe)に着目して研究を進めた.理論的には,この3つの系の配置エントロピーは同程度であるが,生成エンタルピーがクロム系では負,鉄系では正,マンガン系では略ゼロとなっており定性的な違いが指摘されている.即ち,クロム系では異種元素が,鉄系では同種元素が最近接になりやすい傾向があり,一方,マンガン系はランダムになり易い傾向を持つことが予想される. 本年度は,理論的に予想されている生成エンタルピーの定性的な違い(Cr系では負,Fe系では正,Mn系では略ゼロ)が,局所構造にどのように反映されているのかを実験的に明らかにするために,SPring-8 BL14B1にてX線吸収端微細構造解析(EXAFS)を行った.予備的ではあるが局所構造解析を行ったところ,3つの物質の間で,平均格子定数の違いでは説明ができない変化がEXAFSスペクトルに見られ,何らかの局所構造の違いを示唆する結果が得られた.しかしながら,本年度の実験から,実験中の系統誤差が不明瞭なため定量的な議論が難しいこともわかってきた.より定量的な議論をするために,次年度は試料形状をフォイル状にするなどの工夫を行い,系統誤差を減らした実験を進める予定である.また中性子全散乱測定による局所構造解析を行うために,J-PARC MLFへのビームタイム申請を行い,2020A期にビームタイムを獲得した.2020年度は中性子実験による局所構造解析を進めることに加えて,本年度行ったEXAFS実験をより詳細に行う予定である.

    In order to reveal pressure-induced magnetic phases on the cerium-based heavy electron superconductor CeNiGe3, we developed a small pressure cell with a wide detectable reflection angles for neutron diffraction experiments. For higher-pressure experiments above 4 GPa, further improvement on the gasket and sealing parts is indispensable. High-pressure neutron experiments were late because of a delay on the development of high pressure cell and a trouble on the cryostat in the neutron facility. Under these circumstances, we studied an alternate research subject of the noncentrosymmetric cerium-based intermetallic compounds CePdSi3. For CePdSi3, we found multiple magnetization steps, complex magnetic phase diagrams, and a possibility that an incommensurate magnetic ground state is realized.
