    仮に「文化culture」というものが、「変化」を少なくない度合いで想定しながら使われる言葉であるとすると、文化研究（カルチュラル・スタディーズ）において、「変化の長さ」というものが鍵となる場合が多くなってくるだろう。そのとき、カルチュラル・スタディーズ勃興期におけるウェールズ的な経験、すなわち、本研究課題が「例外的な戦闘性」と呼ぶ、急激な変化の経験が重要性を増すことになる。A・ベヴァン、A・ルイスらを対象にしながら、そうした「いま・ここ」での即時的変化をもとめる感情がどのようなかたちをとったのか考察し（初年度目）、レイモンド・ウィリアムズの書き物がそうした感情構造への複雑な応答として解しうることを考察してきた（二年度目）。三年目となる本年度は、R・ウィリアムズと第二世代のニューレフトの論者たち（P・アンダーソンやF・マルハーン、A・バーネット）との緊張感のなかに、「例外的な戦闘性」への応答としての「長い革命」のかたちを見ることを、公表した論文の準備過程のなかで試みた。19世紀の小説家ジェイン・オースティンの書き物をめぐって、その政治性の希薄さを非難するニューレフト第二世代に対し、1970年代後半のウィリアムズは「社会」を「政治」から分離させ、前者の「長い変化」に希望を託させようとするのだが、こうした側面の両義性を考察した。また、ウィリアムズの言う「かたち（フォーム）」がいかなるものかを、昨年度の研究の継続として、とくに、フォームを記述するものとふつうの人びととの関係に着目しながら、また、ごくポピュラーな文化的作品ジャンルについて一般的な分析を進めながら、そうした両義性のなかに位置付ける考察も、口頭発表の準備過程のなかで試みた。

    The 1980s in Britain is a period in which there arose an intense debate about nationalism, which is an indispensable point when we are considering the 1980s British Culture. As is often pointed out, 1983 is a year in which Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities, Ernest Gellner's Nations and Nationalism, and Raymond Williams's essay, "The Culture of Nations" were published. This study aims at describing these papers on nationalism themselves as an important aspect of the 1980s British Culture as it is looking at the positioning and readership concerning these writers, rather than questioning the theoretical accuracy of them.

    Our study aimed to make a unique contribution to humanities, especially those studies relating to culture, by re-constructing the basic method of cultural studies. For that purpose, taking into account of the latest scholarship of critical and cultural theories, we re-examined modern British criticism from the eighteenth to twentieth centuries--those critics regarded as "residual"--from Edmund Burke to Raymond Williams. In doing so, we set them in the international context, investigating the idea of culture genealogically. Our research has confirmed that the genealogy of cultural criticism in Britain is inseparably related to the experiences of industrialization those critics had, as well as to their responses to it.

    Through examination of political discourse as well as literary criticism in the 1960s Britain we can find a dominant pattern of culture working in the form of "escape from society"; on the other hand, a certain response or reaction to this pattern can be certainly discovered in Raymond Williams's writing: there always occurs an action to any social action including the one of escaping from society, but the significant resources of such organisation lie indeed in the "physical presence" of nature-the landscape or scenery, for instance-which can be described in its particular wording of the place. To follow his wording, it should be a structure of feeling, and to a certain extent be ideological (distorted).

    Our study has re-examined British critics from John Ruskin to Raymond Williams, based on the recent development of critical theory in English Litera- ture, for the purpose of contributing to studies in humanities from an original point of view. In treating both writings of Williams and, guided by them, those of other British critics in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, we have focused on the “residuals” which have been somehow dropped from the dominant paradigm of the history of criticism or, to put it in another way, left by Structuralism. We have made an international re-examination of these critics, too, having its basis on the orientation towards totality or wholeness pre- served by them in the modern era.

    With the idea of the modern(ity) that has been struggled to be developed mainly by Raymond Williams since the 1960s, we can detect some essential "structure of feeling"-a community of the alienated-at least in one sect of English dramatists in the 1970s. This structure of feeling cannot be separated from their forms of dramatic productions. This kind of point of view will contribute to further development of research into English drama in the 1970s.

    The aim of our project was to focus on the 1950s, a watershed decade in the history of twentieth-century Britain, and to examine and historicize the cultural dynamics and ramifications of British postwar change in ways that range throughout various media. The results of our project include (1) the publication of Lady Chatterley's Lover and Body Knowledge ; (2) hosting a symposium on 'Historicizing the English Literature of the 1950s' ; and (3) the editing and publication of British Cultural History in Love and War 1951-2000.

    本研究は,第二次大戦後英国に登場した,いわゆる「ニューウェイフ(New Wave)」と呼ばれる劇作家の中でも,社会改良を掲げて大きな反響を呼んだアーノルド・ウェスカーを,その主たる対象とするものである。その際,階層問題などの社会的背景との関連性を明らかにすることで,また,ウェスカーに関係する作家達にも目を向けることで,分析の充実を図り,再評価を行うことを目指した。 二年目にあたる本年度では,ポピュラー・カルチャーの問題性を厳しく指摘し,否定的な立場を取るウェスカーが,聖別化もされていなければ,その一方で,大衆性の「烙印」を押されることのないような形の演劇を,どのように求めることになったのか,という問題を検討すべく,米国内アーカイヴでの調査資料を含む,ウェスカー関連資料の読解を行った。また,社会的背景と演劇作品の関わりを考察する上で,作品の「形式性」を慎重に検討するため,ウェスカーに限らず広く戦後英国の「社会的」劇作家一般という観点をとり,ウェスカー作品との関連性が強く指摘されるD.Edgar,Maydaysの分析を,本年度の研究目的に含まれる関連作家研究の一環として実施し,英国の「社会的」劇作家がその問題系を提示する際に共通して抱えると考えられる形式的問題点,つまり,悲劇的要素の抑圧とアイロニー形式の浮上という点について考察を深めた。この成果は,アメリカ演劇に対して応用されている文化の社会学的手法を,イギリス演劇に適用する際の妥当性を検討する際にも,示唆するものが大きいものと思われる。この観点を充分に生かしつつ,ウェスカー作品上演に関する文化の社会学的分析について,論文化の可能性を本研究は今後も継続して模索してゆく。
