    Dumbbell-shaped hybrid nanoparticles, consisting of gold and iron oxide (Au-Fe3O4 NPs), show promise for magnetic hyperthermia cancer therapy. However, conventional synthesis methods using toxic iron pentacarbonyl (Fe(CO)5) raise safety concerns. We propose a safer approach using triiron dodecacarbonyl (Fe3(CO)12) as a precursor. We synthesize these NPs by initially reducing gold (III) chloride trihydrate with a tert-butylamine-borane complex at room temperature, yielding Au NPs. These Au NPs are combined with a Fe3(CO)12 solution and heated to 300 °C for 1 hour, resulting in the desired dumbbell-shaped Au-Fe3O4 NPs. Characterization confirms their morphology, with average sizes of 5 nm for Au NPs and 15 nm for Fe3O4 NPs. Our systematic evaluation of hydrophilic-treated Au-Fe3O4 NPs (Ms=49.5 emu/g at 3T, 300K) demonstrates temperature increases beyond the therapeutic threshold of 45 °C (ΔT=8 °C) at higher field strengths (8.6–30.0 kA/m), highlighting their cancer treatment potential. Quantitative analysis reveals superb performance, with a specific absorption rate (SAR) of 60.0 W/g and intrinsic loss power (ILP) of 0.25 nHm2kg−1 at the maximum field strength. These findings emphasize the significant potential of our dumbbell-shaped Au–Fe3O4 NPs for magnetic hyperthermia.

    Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is widely used to relieve pain caused by metastatic bone tumors. We previously found that PMMA bone cement containing 15 mass% or more of TiO2 showed good apatite-forming ability, and 25 mass% or more of Fe3O4 generated sufficient heat for hyperthermia under an alternating current (AC) magnetic field. In this study, the cytocompatibility of PMMA bone cement with Fe3O4:TiO2 weight ratios of 25:15 (F25T15-3/2-42) and 30:15 (F30T15-3/2-42) was evaluated using osteoblastic cells (MC3T3-E1). The proliferation and differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells were suppressed for F25T15-3/2-42 and F30T15-3/2-42 compared to PMMA bone cement without Fe3O4 and TiO2 (F0T0-3/2-42). The release of methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomers from F25T15-3/2-42 and F30T15-3/2-42 at 7 days was about 33 and 50 times higher than that from F0T0-3/2-42, respectively. The remarkable release of MMA monomers from F25T15-3/2-42 and F30T15-3/2-42 may be responsible for the suppressed proliferation and differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells. The release of MMA monomers was not reduced when the MMA/PMMA weight ratio was decreased from 3/2 to 1/1, however, it was significantly reduced by increasing the content of benzoyl peroxide (BPO) and N, N-dimethyl- p-toluidine (DMPT) to 8 and 4 mass% against MMA, respectively. Proliferation and differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells on PMMA-type cements containing Fe3O4 and TiO2 with increased BPO and DMPT contents need to be investigated in the future; however, our findings will be useful for designing PMMA cements for the hyperthermic treatment of metastatic bone tumors.

    Abstract The blocking temperature (TB) and blocking temperature distribution (ΔTB) of magnetic grains were evaluated for L10-type FePt granular films with various grain boundary materials (GBMs). TB and ΔTB were measured from remanent magnetization. The relationship between the degree of order and Curie temperature (TC) for the L10-type FePt phase was separately evaluated using alloy films. According to actual measurements, the obtained mean TB, mean TB/TC and ΔTB for granular films were 620 K, 0.83 K, and 200 K, respectively, for SnO GBM film and 450 K, 0.61 K, and 260 K, respectively, for TiO2 GBM film. Based on these values, mean TB, mean TB/TC, and ΔTB were calculated assuming that τ = 2 × 10−7 s, which is the relaxation time, corresponds to the HAMR writing time. These were 737 K, 0.98 K, and 24 K, respectively, for SnO GBM film and 685 K, 0.93 K, and 72 K, respectively, for TiO2 GBM film. These results for granular films can be useful for designing a hard disk drive with HAMR.

    In this study, we aim to develop gold-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4@Au NPs) as theranostic agents for magnetic hyperthermia and CT imaging applications. The Fe3O4 NPs were synthesized via thermal decomposition method, and the gold was then deposited onto the surface of Fe3O4 NPs by reducing gold acetate at 190 °C. The average sizes of Fe3O4 and Fe3O4@Au NPs were 5.2 nm and 6.1 nm, respectively, which are effectively removed by the kidneys. The magnetization of Fe3O4@Au NPs (9.7 emu/g-Fe3O4) at 300 K was much smaller than that of Fe3O4 NPs (52.4 emu/g-Fe3O4). The heating efficiency of Fe3O4@Au NPs in water was sufficient to treat the tumor at 43–45 °C, and their high CT value of 851 HU was obtained. The synthesized ultrasmall Fe3O4@Au NPs showed great promise as a potential theranostic agent for magnetic hyperthermia and CT imaging applications.

    Anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) effect on a Weyl semimetal Co2MnAl Heusler alloy was experimentally and theoretically investigated by changing the Co content, the direction of electric current against the crystal axis, and the measurement temperature. The experimentally fabricated Co2MnAl thin films epitaxially grown on a MgO single-crystal substrate showed the positive AMR ratios independent of the Co content, the direction of electric current, and the measurement temperature. The AMR ratios for the direction of electric current along Co2MnAl[100] were larger than those along Co2MnAl[110]. The maximum AMR ratios for Co2MnAl[100] were 0.576% at 5 K and 0.349% at 300 K for a Co content of 47 at. %, which is close to the stoichiometric composition. Furthermore, the theoretical calculations of AMR ratios based on the s-d scattering process of the electrons at the Fermi energy, including the information on the density of states (DOS) obtained from first-principles calculations, exhibited trends similar to the experimental results. Compared with the AMR results of Co2MnGa[110], we found that the magnitude relation between the partial DOS of the ε and γ orbitals of the d state of Co atoms determined the sign of the AMR ratios. These results suggest that the AMR effect of Weyl semimetal Co2MnAl can be elucidated by the s-d scattering process of the electrons.

    Abstract In this study, post-annealing under NH3 gas atmosphere was conducted in order to promote the two-phase separation of FePt-BN granular films. Magnetic properties and structural analysis for the Fe50Pt50–30 vol% BN granular films revealed that (1) saturation magnetization (Ms) of the granular film increased from 500 to 650 emu cm−3 with increasing post-annealing time from 0 to 10 min, (2) the orientation of FePt grains changes from (002) to (111) and fully ordered with increasing post-annealing time up to 30 min, (3) the unit cell volume of FePt grains in the granular film decreased from 55.91 to 55.55 Å3 with increasing post-annealing time from 0 to 10 min, which suggests dissolve and eject of solid solution element. From the above, Ms reduction for the FePt-BN granular films is considered to be caused by the solid solution of B in the FePt grains.

    Magnetic nanoparticles are widely studied for their use in various therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. As biomaterials, their biocompatibility is as important as their magnetic properties. Iron nitride (Fex Ny ) has excellent magnetic properties, and thus Fex Ny nanoparticles could be useful as potential biomaterials. However, the biocompatibility of Fex Ny nanoparticles is yet to be investigated. In this study, we assessed the biocompatibility of Fex Ny nanoparticles by evaluating their direct-contact cytotoxicity compared with that of magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs). Rat fibroblasts were incubated with the nanoparticle samples dispersed in culture medium at concentrations of 10, 50, and 100 μg/ml. The DNA concentration measurement, MTT assay, and trypan blue exclusion test were conducted after days 1 and 3 of incubation. After day 1, the cell viability decreased, and cell death increased with increasing sample concentration when compared with the control. However, after day 3, there were no significant differences when compared with the control, irrespective of the sample concentrations. Further, there were no significant differences between the Fex Ny nanoparticles and MNPs at the same concentrations in all the cytotoxicity evaluation tests. Therefore, it is suggested that Fex Ny nanoparticles might be as cytocompatible as the conventional MNPs.

    <p>  Metastable α"-Fe16N2 have attracted much interest as a candidate for rare-earth-free hard magnetic materials. To realize high coercivity, it is necessary to utilize not only the magnetocrystalline anisotropy but also the shape anisotropy of α"-Fe16N2 nanoparticles assemblies. An increase in magnetostatic couplings and intergranular exchange couplings among particles typically reduces the coercivity. Therefore, it is very important to evaluate the anisotropy and magnetic interactions among α"-Fe16N2 nanoparticles. We have examined the changes in morphology, structure and magnetic properties through the synthesis of α"-Fe16N2 nanoparticles from various materials such as α-FeOOH, ɤ-Fe2O3, and Fe3O4. The magnetic interactions were also estimated based on experimental results obtained by analysis of the rotational hysteresis loss of randomly oriented nanoparticles. Hc and Hkptc for the α"-Fe16N2 nanoparticle assemblies for different starting materials ranged from 2.2 to 1.1 kOe, and from 11 to 12 kOe respectively. Experimental results of the normalized coercive force and normalized switching field suggests that the existence of large magnetic interactions among α"-Fe16N2 nanoparticles.</p>

    Magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted attention for their potential use electronic devices and nano -bioengineering applications. Fe NPs made from an Fe(CO)x-Oleylamine (OlAm) reacted precursor by thermal decomposition show high saturation magnetization (σs) (∼140 emu/gnet at 300 K). However, the σs never reaches the bulk value (218 emu/g at 300 K) of iron. This is due to the unique crystalline structure of the Fe NPs. Fe NPs covered with OlAm (OlAm-Fe NP) have an expanded α(b.c.c.) structure and ultra-fine grains. We improved the σs of Fe NPs via phase control by adjusting the adsorption ability of a surfactant such as trioctylamine (TOcAm) or tribenzylamine (TBeAm). These surfactants have weaker adsorption ability than that of OlAm. Rietveld analysis revealed that the crystalline structure of Fe NPs covered with TOcAm or TBeAm was drastically changed into a rather α-Fe phase, in contrast to the expanded α phase observed for the OlAm-Fe NPs. TOcAm-Fe NPs had 10- 80 vol.% of the α-Fe phase, and TBeAm-Fe NPs had 80- 99 vol.% of the α-Fe phase, which indicates an α-Fe single phase. A σs of 199 emu/gnet for the TBeAm-Fe NPs was obtained at 300 K. This remarkable improvement is due to the increase volume fraction of the α-Fe phase. These results suggest that α-Fe phase formation using weak adsorption surfactant was highly effective for improving the σs.

    &nbsp;&nbsp;Two different approaches to obtain monodisperse Fe nanoparticles (NPs) in a wide range of average diameters based on thermal decomposition of Fe(CO)5 were developed; the first is thermal decomposition of a Fe(CO)5-oleylamine (OAm) reacted precursor, and the second is a method of Fe(CO)5 slow injection. OAm as a surfactant strongly adsorbed on an Fe atom in the thermal decomposition of a Fe(CO)5-OAm reacted precursor and restricted the particle growth process. As a result, small NPs 2.3 nm in diameter were obtained. Moreover, it was possible to control the NP diameter in the range from 2.3 to 10 nm by changing the reaction temperature and the time for precursor preparation. However, large NPs over 20 nm in diameter were obtained with the method of slow injection by promoting the process of particle growth. Controls for the density of dissolved Fe atoms and Fe NPs in a reaction solution were required to accelerate particle growth without nucleation. Modifications to the injection rate and/or thermal decomposition temperature of Fe(CO)5 thus enabled us to control the NP diameter in the range from 12 to 21 nm.

    The magnetic properties of Fe nanoparticle-based bulk material, which was fabricated with a through post-annealing process under vacuum conditions, were investigated to develop a new Fe-based soft magnetic material. Fe nanoparticles (NPs) retained uniform-size and narrow-size distributions at a post annealing temperature (Ta) of 473K. Their assembly was self organized, which is referred to as nano size periodicity. Soft magnetic properties were obtained at 1.7±0.2 Oe of coercivity at room temperature, and 179 emu/gnet of saturation magnetization was obtained at 5K by using Ta=473 K . Above Ta= 573 K, saturation magnetization decreased and coercivity was increased. High temperature post-annealing above 523 K caused NP growth and the transformation α-Fe to Fe3C, which originated from carbon impurities in the surfactant. Thus, the low-temperature post-annealing process plays an important role in achieving high performance soft magnetic properties using Fe NP-based bulk material by desorbing of surfactants without the formation of iron carbide.

    Fe/Au nanoparticle (NPs) assemblies with various Fe NPs densities were prepared by simultaneous agglomeration of Fe NPs and Au NPs in solution. The density of the Fe NPs was widely controlled below 43% by modifying the mixture ratio of both NP solutions. Only dipole interaction effectively induced magnetic interaction between Fe NPs in this system. With the increase in the volume fractions of Fe NPs from 0.5% to 43%, the collective behavior of magnetic moments of Fe NPs was induced by strong magnetic dipole interactions. As a result, the tendency of soft magnetic properties was found. The diameter analysis revealed that the magnetic dipole interaction energy depending on close-packed assembly consisting of only Fe NPs was 13 times that of the magnetic dipole interaction energy between two Fe NPs. The maximum magnetic dipole field was estimated to be approximately 3-5 × 105 A/m for around 8 nm of the assembly of Fe NPs. This value is much larger than that of the anisotropic field of Fe NPs. Therefore, the magnetic properties in this system were dominated by magnetic dipole interactions.

    Monodisperse Fe nanoparticles have been prepared by a thermal decomposition of an iron carbonyl. In order to investigate effect of the growth rate and decomposition rate of the iron carbonyl on the saturation magnetization of the Fe nanoparticles, a growth rate was obtained from the results on a reaction time dependence of particle diameter of the Fe nanoparticles. Furthermore, decomposition rate of the iron carbonyl was quantitatively obtained from the decrease in an Infrared (IR) spectra peaks of the iron carbonyl. The saturation magnetization of the Fe nanoparticles tended to be improved under the condition with high decomposition rate of iron carbonyl and low growth rate. These results indicate that two such parameters are important factors to promote the growth of the phase having high saturation magnetization in the Fe nanoparticles synthesis process.

    The magnetic nanoparticle assembly is the candidate as a high-frequency magnetic material with isotropic magnetic properties. For practical applications, the dynamic properties of the superparamagnetic nanoparticle assembly, especially the upper limit of frequency for superparamagnetic properties, should be clarified. According to the phenomenological thermal relaxation theory, the upper limit of frequency has been assumed to be the blocking resonance frequency, fb. However, considering that the superparamagnetic nanoparticle is one of the ferromagnetic materials, the influence of the ferromagnetic resonance of magnetic nanoparticles should be considered in high frequency range near the ferromagnetic resonance frequency, fr. In this study, in order to clarify the upper limit of frequency for the superparamagnetic properties, we investigated its dynamic magnetic properties at high frequencies close to fr using Fe3O4 nanoparticles. As a result, we found that magnetic nanoparticle assembly can be made to maintain its superparamagnetic properties almost up to approximately fr by reducing the nanoparticle volume.

    Focusing on an atomic diffusion in fcc-FePt nanoparticle synthesized by our uniquely developed "modified-polyol process", we tried to obtain L1_0 phase FePt nanoparticles by optimizing reflux conditions, such as i) reflux time, ii) reflux temperature, iii) surfactant, iv) solvent without oxygen atom and v) reductant. High temperature reflux with strong reductant and without surfactant could promote the atomic diffusion and thus, ordering process to L1_0 phase. As a result, we have successfully obtained partially ordered L1_0-FePt nanoparticles with volume fraction about 50%, which was five times higher than that previously obtained for FePt nanoparticles synthesized by conventionally used "modified-polyol process".

    In order to possibly apply to electromagnetic wave absorber for ultra-wide band, high saturation magnetization Fe-based spin-nano-cluster material was experimentally verified via uniquely developed chemical route. Coagulated Fe nanoparticles with magnetite nanoparticles with the average diameter of 11.1 nm and 4.6nm, respectively, showed higher blocking temperature, where the imaginary part of complex magnetic susceptibility and magnetic loss took the maximum, resulting in 223K at maximum. Thus, the hybrid material would pave the way for achieving a giant magnetic loss at around room temperature.

    Fe16N2, which is one of the iron nitrides, was obtained by reducing and nitriding magnetite (Fe3O4). Thus obtained Fe16N2 was estimated to show higher heat-generating ability than Fe3O4, and its cytocompatibility was almost same as that of Fe3O4. Further, it was found that Fe and Fe8N -deposited silica glass microspheres were obtained when silica glass microspheres were immersed in hydrofluoric acid containing iron ions and subjected to reduction-nitriding treatment.

    大容量情報通信家電に必要な低消費電力の高周波・広帯域通信用アンテナ部材の開発を、世界で唯一、高純度強磁性窒化鉄の粉末合成に成功している東北大学・高橋教授と手を組み行う。強磁性窒化鉄はα-Feの飽和磁化値よりも1割程度大きく、高周波・広帯域対応小型アンテナ部材が得られる可能性が高い。強磁性窒化鉄の粒子サイズ・形状・凝集粒子径等の各パラメータ起因の磁気共鳴周波数への影響を実験的および理論的に比較検討し、定常使用可能な準マイクロ波帯域においてεr’×μr’が20以上、誘電率と透磁率それぞれのTanδが0.01以下となる高周波・広帯域対応小型アンテナ部材の開発指針を得る研究開発を行う。

    ユビキタスネットワーク社会に対応した、GHzバンドの高周波帯域において低消費電力化および広帯域化を兼ね備えた電子デバイスの実現が不可欠であり、それを実現するための新たな材料の開発が急務である。本提案では、磁性材料のナノサイズ化することにより初めて発現する超常磁性に着目し、その高い透磁率ならびに磁気的等方性を用いた次世代プリント基板、高周波対応アンテナの応用を念頭に、化学合成法で作製した磁性ナノ粒子および自己組織化法で作製した磁性ナノ粒子/誘電体複合材料の構造・物性評価を通し、高周波帯域での低消費電力化および広帯域化を可能にする従来にはない新概念の磁性体/誘電体複合材料の開発を行う。
