    Abstract Dislocations have increasingly become important for improving the thermoelectric properties of thermoelectric materials due to their more pronounced scattering effect on phonons than on carriers. This study combined the introduction of the dislocation cores through domain engineering with the generation of Mg vacancies (VMg) by controlling point defects to achieve low lattice thermal conductivity and high power factor in n‐type and p‐type Mg2Sn single crystals (SCs). The VMg domain with ordered atomic arrangements allowed carrier transport with minimal scattering, while the high dislocation density at the interface effectively scattered phonons, thereby decoupling carrier‐phonon transport. This resulted in obtaining the peak zT values of 0.83(8) and 0.42(4) for n‐type and p‐type Mg2Sn SCs, respectively. The outstanding combination of domain engineering and point defect control techniques could be a strategy for developing high‐performance thermoelectric materials.

    Nowotny chimney ladder (NCL) phases are intermetallic binary compounds that typically crystallize in a tetragonal crystal structure and constitute of two separate subsystems. The rich solid-state chemistry of NCL phases inherits fascinating lattice dynamics with unique abilities for structural modifications. As an extensively studied energy material for the thermoelectric application, we overview the emerging aspects for structural interpretation in higher manganese silicides (MnSiγ), a prominently explored example of NCL phase. The progress in understanding the incommensurate composite crystals of MnSiγ is discussed to highlight its functional crystallography for proposing the effective strategies to attain favorable modification of transport properties of charge carriers (concentration, mobility, effective mass), and phonons (lattice thermal conductivity). The application potential and prospective strategies for enabling the rational optimization of the dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit (zT) are examined, and the possibilities of chemical modification in MnSiγ and related NCL phases are presented.

    Lattice defect engineering has attracted attention due to its ability to develop thermoelectric materials with low thermal conductivity. For Mg2Si single crystals (SCs), Si vacancy (VSi) defects can be introduced and consequently result in the formation of dislocation cores. These lattice defects confer Mg2Si SCs with a lower thermal conductivity compared to Mg2Si polycrystals. To reveal a mechanism for the stabilisation of VSi in the Mg2Si SCs, we investigated the effects of oxygen (O) on lattice defects by performing electronic structure calculations, secondary ion mass spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and photoelectron holography. On the basis of these calculations, we predicted that O stabilised the formation of VSi when it was located at the Si site or at an interstitial site. All experiments confirmed the presence of O inside the Mg2Si SCs. However, O was suggested to be located not at the specific site in the crystal lattice of Mg2Si but at dislocation cores. The interaction between O and the dislocation cores in the Mg2Si SC is expected to immobilise dislocation cores, leading to the stabilisation of VSi formation.

    Abstract Iron‐based half‐Heusler alloys constitute an emerging class of semiconducting intermetallics for scalable and efficient thermoelectric conversion, owing to their remarkably high‐power factor, abundance, and low cost. This review encompasses the recent advances in materials synthesis and evolving aspects of optimization pathways in pre‐existing Fe‐based half‐Heusler compositions for attaining a higher thermoelectric figure of merit (zT). The experimental outcomes and theoretical predictions were analyzed and compared using a parametric framework to understand the underlying electronic transport responsible for high power factors exhibited by most of these alloys distinctively. Alongside, effective microstructural approaches were reviewed for which favorable reduction in intrinsically high lattice thermal conductivity (κL) was attained. The electronic structures of MFeSb (M=V, Nb, and Ta) half‐Heuslers is also analyzed using density functional theory‐based calculations to understand the origin of favorable conduction and electrical transport properties. Finally, processing‐structural‐property correlations are discussed to highlight the relevance of structural ordering, phase transformation, and defects on transport properties, for developing effective strategies and material design in Fe‐based half‐Heuslers for their development in thermoelectrics.

    A single-phase sample of α′ (O′3)-type layered sodium cobalt oxide Na <italic>x</italic> CoO2 (<italic>x</italic> ∼ 0.78) was prepared and its incommensurately modulated crystal structure was analyzed using the (3+1)-dimensional superspace approach to the powder neutron diffraction data. The crystal structure of the cobaltate is accurately described based on the superspace group <italic>C</italic>2/<italic>m</italic>(α0γ)00, wherein the positions of Na atoms are most significantly modulated in the monoclinic <bold>a</bold> direction to form an ordered arrangement. Such a displacive modulation causes a quasi-periodic shift of Na atoms from the centers of the NaO6 polyhedra between undulated CoO2 sheets, changing the form of the NaO6 polyhedron from an octahedral coordination (O) to a trigonal prismatic (P) one, via an intermediate capped trigonal prismatic NaO7 coordination (C). At the positions where the Na atoms are most significantly shifted, the neighboring Na atoms are located at almost touching distances. However, the occupation factor of Na atoms becomes zero at such positions, yielding Na-deficient sites <italic>V</italic> Na, sandwiched either between C and P, or C and C-type polyhedra.

    Mg2Si is a potential thermoelectric (TE) material that can directly convert waste energy into electricity. In expectation of improving its TE performance by increasing electron carrier concentration, the element boron (B) is doped in Mg2Si single crystals (SCs). Their detailed crystal structures are definitely determined by using white neutron holography and single-crystal x-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) measurements. The white neutron holography measurement proves that the doped B atom successfully substitutes for the Mg site. The SC-XRD measurement confirms the B-doping site and also reveals the presence of the defect of Si vacancy (VSi) in the B-doped Mg2Si SCs. The fraction of VSi increases with increasing B-doping concentration. In the case of B-doped Mg2Si polycrystals (PCs), VSi is absent; this difference between the SCs and PCs can be attributed to different preparation temperatures. Regarding TE properties, the electrical conductivity, σ, and the Seebeck coefficient, S, decreases and increases, respectively, due to the decrease in the electron carrier concentration, contrary to the expectation. The power factor of the B-doped Mg2Si SCs evaluated from σ and S does not increase but rather decreases by the B-doping. The tendencies of these TE properties can be explained by considering that the donor effect of the B atom is canceled by the acceptor effect of VSi for the B-doped Mg2Si SCs. This study demonstrates that the preparation condition of Mg2Si should be optimized to prevent the emergence of an unexpected point defect.

    Sr_<0.09>Ca_<0.91>CuO_2 was obtained by heating a powder mixture of SrCO_3, CaCO_3, and CuO at 1000℃ in flowing oxygen. The compound has a tetragonal symmetry, P4/mmm, and is characterized by a=3.8581 (1), c=3.1997(1)A^^゜, Z=1, D_m= 4.86 g/cm^3, and D_<cal>=4.88 g/cm^3 The crystal structure was determined and refined to R_ρ= 3.7% by the Rietveld analysis of X- ray powder diffraction data. The compound has an oxygen-deficient perovskite structure. A copper atom is in a square plane of oxygen atoms. This square plane forms a Cu- O flat sheet sharing the oxygen atoms at vertices of the square. The bond length of Cu- O is 1.929 A^^゜. Sr(0.09) and Ca(0.91 ) atoms are statistically in an oxygen square prism. The interatomic distance of ( Ca, Sr) - O is 2.506 A^^゜. This compound is a p-type semiconductor with electric conductivity of 1.2X10^<-4> (Ω・cm)^<-1> at 22℃.

    Crystal structure, electronic structure and thermoelectric (TE) properties of Nowotny chimney-ladder (NCL) higher manganese silicides (HMSs) are reviewed. According to a (3+1)-dimensional superspace approach, HMSs are revealed to belong to incommensurate composite crystals, wherein [Mn] and [Si] subsystems possess an irrational c-axis ratio γ=cMn/cSi. The γ parameter, also represents a stoichiometry of the HMSs as MnSiγ, dictates the electronic structure, directly relating to a valence electron counting number, VEC. The p-type TE performance can be enhanced by a partial substitution of V, Cr, etc., while n-type HMSs can be obtained by heavily substituting Mn with Fe, etc., to realize VEC>14. A unique thermal expansion has been discovered at T~800 K, which would deteriorate TE performance and hence to be avoided from a practical application point of view.<br>

    Crystal structure of the thermoelectric compound known as "Ca3Co4O9" has been determined using a 3+1 dimensional superspace group approach. The cobaltite has been revealed to be a misfit layer compound which consists of two monoclinic subsystems of [CoO2] and [Ca2CoO3] . The [CoO2] subsystem has a CdI2- type triangular lattice of cobalt, while the [Ca2CoO3] subsystem compises a three-layered ordered rock salt-type slab. Since the both subsystems have incommensurate b-axis lengths, the structure formula is expressed as [Ca2CoO3] pCoO2, wherep=bCoO2/bCa2CoO3. Due to the potential interaction between the subsystems, atomic displacive modulation is observed for each atom. The most significant modulation has been found in the Co-O layer of the [Ca2CoO3] subsystem.

    In order to fabricate tilted-multilayer-type power modules based on the off-diagonal thermoelectric (ODTE) effect, wherein the electric current flows perpendicular to the temperature gradient, we performed computer simulation and designed several prototype modules. Consequently, we have confirmed the occurrence of the ODTE effect. The output power was proved to depend on the relative thickness of the TE material, as well as the tilted angle of the module and the highest power was demonstrated to occur at around the relative thickness of ~0.1 and the angle of ~30 degree. In the actually fabricated modules, diffusion of constituent elements was confirmed to deteriorate the output power. Nevertheless, the highest output power was higher than that obtained from the conventional pai-type TE modules.

    We prepared composite thermoelectric materials consisting of Mg2Si and metal to enhance power factor PF and dimensionless figure-of-merit zT of Mg2Si. As a metal, Mg, Al, and Ni were selected. According to the effective-medium theory, it was predicted that PF and zT are enhanced for all these metals; however, it is valid for the Mg/Mg2Si and Al/Mg2Si composite materials. In the case of Ni, PF and zT decreased by preparing the Ni/Mg2Si composite material. This is due to difference in microstructures and barrier heights at the interface between Mg2Si and metal. The maximum zT value of 0.6 (800 K) was obtained for the Al/Mg2Si composite material by the refinement of the microstructure of the dispersed Al metal phase in Mg2Si, which lead to increase in electrical conductivity and decrease thermal conductivity. This value was higher than an partially Al-substituted Mg2Si materials.

    Higher manganese silicide-based chimney-ladder compounds have been prepared and detailed crystal structure of four new phases has been determined. Metallic composition to realize potential thermoelectric (TE) properties has been investigated and the best p-type performance has been achieved for a lightly vanadium-substituted samples. A 3cm x 3cm size TE module has been fabricated and its power generation has been measured under a temperature difference of 400 K. The highest output power of 1.3 W has been recorded, which corresponds to the power density of 1.25 kW/m2.

    Experimental conditions to fabricate solids wherein the carrier concentration consecutively and exponentially changes in order to realize cooling devices utilizing the Thomson effect. Partially Fe-substituted manganese silicides known as degenerated semiconductors have been selected. The amount of Fe-substitution and its distribution were controlled by the spark plasma sintering temperature and duration time. A discernible voltage was detected when the temperature gradient and electric current were applied to the samples. However, it was difficult to separate the contributions of the Seebeck, Peltier and Thomson effects. Besides, a novel phenomenon to generate electric power from no temperature difference has been detected. This effect would useful as a new power generation method from waste heat without cooling parts.

    This project was aimed to develop high performance thermoelectric devices which can directly convert the heat flux to the electrical current. Theoretically, it has been expected that the dimensional controlling, namely developing the two-dimensional device, i. e. thin layered devices as well as two-dimensional layered synthetic crystals might exhibit enhanced thermoelectric performance. Recently, one paper showed that high-performance 2D-device ; i. e., being 2. 5 times high relative to the 3D one, was developed. In this project, thin pulsed laser deposition films, vacuum evaporation films and synthetic layered semiconductors were studied.

    We have focused on preparing misfit-layered sulfides [Ln_2S_2]_pTS_2 (Ln:lanthanide ions, T:transition metal ions), in which a large thermoelectric power factor and a low lattice thermal conductivity can be simultaneously realized, to design novel Peltier materials. First of all, a T=Nb system has been explored to prepare new p-type materials. Except for Ln=Eu and Lu, all the lanthanides ions including Y are found to form [Ln_2S_2]_pNbS_2 phases. Three-types of structure with different superspace group are discovered depending on their ionic radii. Larger ions with Ln=La,Ce and Pr form orthorhombic Fm2m(p00)00s, while the samples with Ln=Nd and Sm form Fm2m(p00)000. For smaller ions with Ln=Gd,Tb,Dy,Ho,Er,Tm,Yb and Y, monoclinic F2(p0q) phases are obtained. The sample with Ln=Yb exhibits the highest thermoelectric figure-of-merit Z=3.2 x 10^<-4> K^<-1>, with the Seebeck coefficient S=60μVK^<-1>, resistivity ρ=1.4 mΩcm and κ=0.80 WK^<-1>m^<-1>, at around 300 K, yielding the dimensionless figure-of-merit ZT〜0.1. The Z value still increases with increasing temperature, but the maximum value of Z as well as the highest limit temperature to be utilized are not determined in detail. Next, we have fabricated a thermoelectric pn junction (1 pair) using a Yb-Nb-S compound as a p-type leg and a Sn-Ti-S compound as an n-type leg. The pn uncouple was attached to an Al sheet on its top with silver paste and then was subjected to the Peltier property measurements. At the beginning, a small temperature difference with several kelvin was in fact observed but the difference became small and reached zero with further applying an electric current. This behavior can be ascribed to the fact that the Seebeck coefficient of the both legs was not enough (〜70μVK^<-1>) to keep generating temperature difference because the generated Joule heat easily overcame the temperature difference. Hence, further study is necessary to design sulfide thermoelectric materials which have larger figure-of-merit.

    □Thermoelectric thin layered samples ; By means of the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique, which was realized by the financial aid from JSPS under the present contract, following research results were obtained. 1. Smooth and well oriented La_<0.7>Ca_<0.3>MnO_3, La_<0.4>Sr_<0.6>CoO_3 and SrTiO_3 thin films with the thickness in the range from 5nm to 100nm were successfully grown by the PLD method. 2. Very smooth, e.g., the RMS of the surface roughness was about 0.5nm, thin oxide films were grown by PLD method at the optimized environment gas pressure and substrate temperature. 3. Flat and smooth La_<0.7>Ca_<0.3>MnO_3/La_<0.4>Sr_<0.6>CoO_3 multi-layer sample was grown by the PLD method and Shottky barrier height between two layers was measured. The barrier height was 0.6V, being too high for the thermionic devices. □Following results were obtained for bulk samples ; 1. Many thin plate single crystals of Ca349 were grown by the flux-growth method. Grown single crystals have electrically conducting c-planes parallel to the flat surfaces. These thin plates were carefully aligned parallel to the graphite die bottom and sintered by the spark plasma sintering (SPS) machine controlled at about 900 Celsius degree under the pressure at about 20MPa. Obtained block exhibit high thermoelectric property, i.e., ZT=0.4 at 1000K. 2. Nearly isomorphic thermoelectric bismuth-rhodium and -cobalt oxides were elucidated. Following results have been obtained. Chemical properties of both systems are quite similar. (1)Crystal structure of thermoelectric Bi-(Sr,Ba)-Rh-O was studied by EPMA and TEM. Four or five dimensional structure model was obtained from the determined chemical contents and HREM images. (2)Crystal structure of thermoelectric Bi-(Sr,Ca)-Rh-O was studied by EPMA and TEM. Four or five dimensional structure model was obtained from the determined chemical contents and HREM images. (3)Thermoelectric properties of Ba, Sr or Ca substituted γ-Na_<0.7>CoO_2 samples, which were synthesized by the ion-exchange technique, were studied and their crystal structures were determined by TEM and X-ray diffraction measurement. Most of the crystals were incommensurated CDW phases.

    研究室所有のArレーザーが発光しなくなったことから,当初の計画を見直し,EPRや中性子散乱を用いたd^1系モット・ハバード型絶縁体の研究を行いました.例えば,d^1系モット・ハバード型絶縁体であり,パイロクロア構造をとるLu_2V_2O_7の強磁性の起源を,実験から得たパラメーターを用いて明らかにしました.この系は,軌道が完全に反強的に配列するK2CUFなどとは異なり,パイロクロア格子を反映し,軌道が完全には反強的に配列できず,フラストレーションを解消するように,互いに約109度の配列することです.これはまさに2次元3角格子の120度構造に対応した新しい軌道配列パターンと言えます.この構造で強磁性が実現することがわかりました.また京都大学化研高野教授のグループに協力していただき,Lu_2Cr_2O_7の合成を行い,その結晶構造パラメーターを決定し,eg軌道に2個の電子が入ることがわかりました.その他にY_<1-x>Ca_xTiO_3系の粉末試料を広島大学先端研伊賀助教授らにいただき,我々が中心となり,絶対値によるPDF局所構造解析に日本国内で初めて成功しました。さらにx=0.39の試料では体温付近で相分離を起こすことを発見しました.これはセラミックスとしては非常にまれな現象です. その他の成果として,分極関数の特異性を反映して,電子構造と相関してMO_6八面体(M;遷移金属)の傾きの秩序化が生じることを提案しました.これはツインやミクロな混合相の秩序化が電子系の不安定さに起因して起こることを説明します.今までのCDW系とは異なる強い共有結合ネットワーク系における新しい形の電子系と結合した構造歪みを初めて提案したものです.

    Present study was aimed to obtain structural characteristics of optically sennsitive magnetic clusters and its related physical properties of magnetic clusters in the II-VI-type semiconductors deped with magnetic metal atoms. Single crystals of Zn_<1-x>Mn_xTe with x=0.3-0.6 were prepared by the standard Bridgeman method. Structural study on the average lattice was done by means of powder x-ray diffraction measurement in the temperature range from 20K to the ambient. Magnetic susceptibility measurements were performed by means of SQUID manetometer in the range from the ambient to 4.2K.The spin glass temperatures, Tg, were determined accordingly. In the course of the present study, diffuse intensities due to the short range magnetic ordering was found by the powder neutron diffraction measurement below 100K.The magnetic structure-type of the magnetic clusters, which is responsible for the diffuse scatterings, has been determined by means of single crystal neutron diffraction study. The single crystal neutron diffraction measurement was performed in the magnetic field up to 5-Tesla by the use of high resolution neutron diffractometers, HRPD and HERMES installed in the JRR3M reactor hall and the thermal guide hall, respectively. Two dimensional neutron diffraction intensity measurement was performed in the 001 reciprocal plane simultaneously by many neutron counters set in the instruments. Brillouin scattering measurement was tried to study the spin dynamics in the low temperature range. Brillouin scattering measurement, i.e., an optical inelastic scattering measurement, is suitable to measure the excitation levels in the range below 0.5meV with the resolution of 0.01meV.A new Ar-gas laser was purchased with the aid of present financial support and a 5-pass high resolution Fabry-Perot interferrometer was made from an old 3-pass interferrometer, and then a 5-pass Brillouin scattering system was assembled. Brillouin scattering measurement at low temperatures in the magnetic field up to 4000 Oe was successfully performed for the complicated ferromagnetic metallic compound. A part of the magnon dispersion relationship consistent with the neutron scattering data was determined by this instrument. Neutron inelastic scattering measurement has been performed for Zn_<0.6>Mn_<0.4>Te sample using the cold neutron spectrometer AGNES.Critical scattering, associated with the spin glass transition has been observed for the first time in this semimagnetic semiconductor. The critical scattering was observed at temperatures in the vicinity of the spin glass transition temperature, 17K.Photo conductivity has been found also for the first time below 150K in Zn_<0.6>Mn_<0.4>Te sample.     本研究はBEDT-TTF分子を含む有機導体とPdHx (0<x<1.0)の異常電気伝導を冷中性子散乱測定、x線回折測定、帯磁率測定および電気伝導度測定等によって多角的に研究する事が目的である。本補助金によって実施した主な研究は(1)有機伝導体の帯磁率に関する水素同位体置換効果に関する研究、(2)中性子散乱による超伝導転移とフォノンスペクトルの異常性に関する研究、(3)有機導電体の水素同位体置換による結晶構造変化に関する研究、および(4)水素化物PdHx (0<x<1.0)の冷中性子散乱測定である。研究の(1)と(2)については研究成果の一部を論文として公表した。(3)と(4)の課題については引き続き実験研究を行っており、一部の成果は日本物理学会1997年・年会(名古屋)にて公表する。 BEDT-TTF分子の両端に水素を重水素に置換したものと重水素化したアンモニアを合成したα-(BEDT-TTF)_2 ND_4Hg (SCN)_4と軽水素のみからなる同位体分子の結晶について室温以下の温度領域で帯磁率測定を行った。その結果、50K付近の帯磁率の極大現象に同位体置換効果が著しいことが分かった。即ち、軽水素からなる試料の50K付近の帯磁率は重水素置換体よりも15%程度小さい。 超伝導体κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2 Cu (SCN)_2に関して高エネルギー物理学研の中性子分光器LAM-DとLAM-40を用いて2.6Kから18Kまでの温度領域における中性子非弾性散乱強度測定を行い、超伝導転移温度以下の領域で2, 4および8meV付近のエネルギーを持つピークが現れる事を見いだした。また、2meV以下の領域においても、温度低下にともなう強い臨界散乱現象を見た。これらの散乱強度変化は主に超伝導転移に伴う水素の振動モードの温度変化によるものである。日本原子力研究所に設置している冷中性子分光器AGNESを用いて同様の実験を行った所、更に詳しいデータを得た。

    Bi_2Te_3系熱電材料の使用可能な温度域を拡張し、高効率な熱電変換素子を実現させるために、キャリア濃度を傾斜させた材料の開発が期待されている。これまで、バルクについて多くの報告があるものの、薄膜の傾斜機能化に関する報告はなされていない。 電解析出(電析)法は、室温近傍で金属相を得ることができ、また電析膜の組成や粒径を容易に制御することが可能な合成法である。さらに、装置が簡単で、任意形状試料の作製が可能などの特徴を有していることから、II-VI族化合物半導体膜の合成にも適用されつつある。Bi_2Te_3膜についても最近になって合成に関する報告がなされたが、電析膜の組成に最も大きく影響する析出電位と生成膜の組成や物性値の関係については調べられていない。 本研究では、キャリア濃度(組成)が連続的に変化したBi_2Te_3系傾斜機能膜を作製するための基礎データを得ることを目的とし、BiおよびTeイオンを含む硝酸水溶液中で電流-電位曲線を作製して、Bi_2Te_3膜の得られる電位範囲を明らかにすることを試みた。続いて、その析出電位範囲内で、電位と得られた膜の組成、格子定数の関係を調べるとともに、膜のゼ-ベック係数を測定した。 ポテンショスタットを用いてTi電極上に3電極方式で電析を行ったところ、-0.25〜+0.08V vs Ag・AgClにおいてBi_2Te_3の単相膜が得られた。析出電位の減少とともにBi_2Te_3のa軸長が増加し、逆にc軸長は減少する傾向が見られたことから、析出電位を変化させるにより膜の組成を制御できることが明らかになった。+0.02Vを境にこれより貴な電位ではn型膜が、卑な電位域ではp型膜が生成した。これまでのところ、物性測定が可能な緻密な膜は+0.02V近傍で合成された低キャリア濃度のものに限られており、ゼ-ベック係数の最高値は+0.04Vで作製された膜の-63.4μVK^<-1>(300K)である。
