Abstract Oxygen in solids usually exists in an O2− ionic state. As a result, it loses its magnetic nature of a single atom, wherein two unpaired electrons exist in its outer 2p orbitals. Here, it is shown that an unconventional stable ionic state of O is realized in a new semiconductor material Sr2AlO4, leading to an intrinsic p‐orbital ferromagnetism stable until ≈900 K. Experimental and theoretical investigations have clarified that one‐fourth of the oxygen atoms in Sr2AlO4 are insufficiently bonded in the crystal structure, resulting in a unique O‐state and p‐orbital ferromagnetism. To date, the O state is reported to exist only in non‐equilibrium conditions, and p‐orbital magnetism is only suggested in impurity bands with small ferromagnetic moments. The present work provides a new route for creating ferromagnetism in semiconductors and exploring new p‐orbital physics and chemistry. In addition, the material shows elastic‐mechanoluminescence that may enable unprecedented mechano‐photonic‐spintronics.

The discovery of innovative mechanoluminescence materials of SrAl2O4 and ZnS, which emit repeatable light [repeatable mechanoluminescence (ML), hereafter simply ML] even by soft touch, has trigged intense research interest in material/device/system development for applications across various fields. This perspective presents an overview of the crystal structures, mechanisms, and ML behaviors of most promising systems, namely, SrAl2O4-, ZnS-, LiNbO3-, and Sr3Sn2O7-based ferroelectric materials. These multipiezo materials, which simultaneously exhibit intrinsic piezoluminescence (true elastic deformation induced ML and no friction effect) and piezoelectricity, show distinct and valuable characteristics by integrating mechanical force, electric field, and light for stress sensing and other applications. Recent studies indicated the critical role of crystal structure, doping, and piezoelectric properties in achieving robust and reliable ML performance. These findings suggest that ML materials hold substantial promise for applications in stress/force sensing, structural health monitoring, mechanically activated lighting, and advanced imaging techniques. Further investigation and advancement of multipiezo materials could yield breakthroughs, further augmenting their usefulness across various industries and scientific domains. Exploring ferroelectric ML materials offer new prospects for developing advanced materials with unique electro-mechano-optical properties.

Abstract In this study, the elastic properties of the newly discovered mechanoluminescence (ML) material LixZn1−xO:Nd3+ are investigated by first‐principles calculations. The elastic properties such as Young's modulus, bulk modulus, and shear modulus are calculated from the elastic tensor. As a result of investigating the phase stability of LixZn1−xO:Nd3+, it indicates that the wurtzite ZnO phase is stable in the Li additive range of 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.44, and an excess addition caused a structural transition to the h‐BN structure. Besides, elastic properties, such as Young's modulus, bulk modulus, and shear modulus of LixZn1−xO:Nd3+ are decreased with increasing Li concentration in the examined range of 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.44. Furthermore, it reveals from bonding analysis between cation and anion that the bonding strength of Li─O bonding for the covalent bonding is weaker than that of Zn─O bonding. The elastic softening derives from atomic interaction in the covalent bonding. Therefore, it concludes that elastic softening is promoted by the increase in Li─O bonding with weak covalent bonding as the Li concentration increases.

Mechanoluminescence (ML) refers to the photon emission from materials subjected to mechanical stimuli. A general concept concerning ML materials is that they cannot directly record a stress history (mechanical record; MR). Here, we report an approach that retrieves a quantitative recording of stress history through the afterglow characteristics analysis of a specific multi-piezo ML material Li0.12Na0.88NbO3:Pr (LNNO), which has been designated to exist near the structural phase boundary of rhombohedral R3c and orthorhombic P21ma. Contrary to the general expectation that the afterglow characteristics are irrelevant to mechanical loading history, LNNO was strongly correlated with the stress distribution after UV excitation. This enabled us to read the recorded stress precisely from the afterglow image of the material. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of the MR was also realized, showing the capability of the readout of stress history in both time and space. This unusual MR function is attributed to eliminating shallow trap sites, which affected the afterglow characteristics upon applying mechanical load.

    More details Close

The use of mechanoluminescent (ML) sensor in form of SrAl2O4:Eu (SAOE) film-coating to predict fracture in reinforced concrete structures is described. Four-point bending tests were performed, and strong and localized ML before cracking was found from the ML images of the SAOE film coated on the concrete surface. The location of the strong ML was in agreement with the location of the cracks caused by the increasing load. This indicates that crack formation can be predicted by using ML sensor. Along with loading, the real-time ML images also clearly showed crack growing on the concrete surface. The results show that the formation position, the propagation direction and the propagating process can be measured from the ML images directly and which crack is in developing can be judged by dynamic ML images. ML film sensor is available to predict fracture in reinforced concrete structures.

Mechanoluminescent (ML) materials are attractive smart materials that can emit light induced by mechanical deformation. The ML sensing devices of SrAl2O4:Eu have been developed to make possible to visualize dynamic stress. Dynamic stress distributions are visualized as patterns of mechanoluminescence by painted micro-particle mixtured with paint on surface of the structure. In this paper, we attend that patterns in mechanoluminescence images reflect the distribution of stress on the structures. A method of mechanoluminescence pattern detection is divided into two steps. First step is image filtering in which the euclid distance and correlation coefficient between each frame images are applied for detection of mechanoluminescence patterns. Sencound step is detailed analysys of mechanoluminescence pattern by using Higher Order Local Autocorrelation (HLAC). Developed method is inspected by using some experimental results.

<p>We have developed a monitoring system that enables the visualization of the shape distribution and propagation of cracks in structures by employing elastico-luminescent sensors. The safety-management monitoring system we have developed includes elastico-luminescent sensors that emit light upon mechanical stimulation (elastico-luminescence), image sensor nodes that monitor the distribution of luminescence intensity of the elastico-luminescent sensors, wireless photodetector nodes, a database for diagnosing the stress anomaly in the structure on the basis of the luminescence intensity, and a network system that coordinates the operation of these components. The appearance of a crack that occurs in bridges and buildings is visualized by using this system, when the elastico-luminescent sensors of the system are placed on the structure surfaces. Moreover, we can predict the generation and propagation of the crack by diagnosing the stress anomaly in the structure. This monitoring system based on elastico-luminescence is expected to be used for the inspection and maintenance of various structures including those made of metal, plastic, and concrete.</p>

&nbsp; This study reports the applicability of mechanoluminescent (ML) sensor to crack detection of concrete under dark-field. ML sensor could emit a visible light when the crack formed in concrete under dark-field. There was a linear relationship between the time-integra ted value of ML intensity and the energy required for the crack formation and propagation, which wa s estimated by load-CMOD curve obtained from bending tests on concrete beams. Based on fracture mechanics of concrete, the mechanism of luminescent of ML sensor was examined.

A defect in a pressurized pipe was visualized by using mechanoluminescent (ML) sensor. In the present work, the hoop strain distribution on the outer surface of a defective pipe was obtained by ML intensity measurement and strain gage measurement. Additionally, a FEM calculation was also performed and compared with the experimental results. The hoop strain distribution obtained from the ML intensity agreed well with that obtained from the strain gage measurement and the FEM calculation. It was found that the hoop strain on the defective pipe had maximum and minimum values around the defect and the maximum hoop strain increased with deepening the defect. These results indicate that the location and depth of the defect in a pipe can be estimated by using the ML sensor.

We have successfully demonstrated that the stress distribution of a metal substrate can be directly displayed by coating the surface of test objects with SrAl2O4:Eu (SAO), a strong mechanoluminescent material. An aluminum plate with the SAO sensing film was applied to experimental analysis of stress concentrations. This novel visualization technique can be applied to view stress concentration in various fields such as modeling, manufacturing and demonstration of industrial products.

Mechanoluminescence (ML) materials have attracted lots of attention due to the potential application in novel stress indicators. SrAl2O4: Eu2+ (SEAO) that exhibits green emission is a well-known ML material. However the ML performance would markedly be degraded when it is put into water environment due to a hydrolysis reaction. In this study we have synthesized a novel ML material, calcium aluminosilicate doped with europium (CaAl2Si2O8: Eu2+) using the solid state reaction process. X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence and mechanoluminescence were measured to characterize the crystallinity and optical properties. The developed ML material showed a strong resistance to water compared to SEAO. It was shown that the introduction of SiO4 tetrahedra leads to the water resistance of calcium aluminosilicate.

Mechanoluminescence is the phenomenon of luminescence induced by a form of mechanical energy, such as compression, tension, torsion, friction, or mechanical shock. In the second half of 1990, we have revealed that certain materials showed a strong light emission repeatedly in small response to stress applied in elastic region, and then this phenomenon was named elasticoluminescence. The elasticoluminescence material provides an effective tool for a non-destructive inspection method, such as a visualization of internal fatigue crack of pressure vessel, a dynamical stress distribution of inside the structure, and so on. This article gives an outline of the developed elasticoluminescence materials, their luminescence properties, and the typical applications for innovative non-destructive inspection method.

Swift heavy ions were irradiated on SrAl2O4:Eu,Ho films for producing point defects. It was found that the aftergrow property was increased dependently to Fe irradiation doses. The thermoluminescence measurement revealed that the deeper carrier traps that is 0.78 eV were created in the lattice by the Fe irradiation, verifying that the swift heavy ions irradiation is effective for improving the aftergrow property in SrAl2O4:Eu, Ho.

Thermoelastic stress analysis is a full-field, non-contact technique for surface stress mapping of materials and structures. The advantage of the method is its ability to image whole-surface stress (Δ (σ_1+σ_2)) distribution in specimens. An experimental system using the thermoelastic stress analysis method and a synthetic femur was utilized to perform reliable and convenient mechanical biocompatibility evaluation of prosthesis design. A device in which mechanoluminescent materials are applied to a synthetic bone is a "mechanoluminescent synthetic bone." Since the region subjected to load emits high intensity light in the visible region, the device has allowed high-definition and high- speed visualization of the mechanical dynamic environment. It is confirmed that they are very effective and complementally techniques in vitro biomechanics research and to contribute to a variety of biomechanical analyses and thus support the practical implementation of prosthetic devices.

Mechanoluminescent (ML) material is a novel functional material and it can emit intensive light emission repeatedly with weak stress application excising in our ordinary life. The ML materials are powder of ceramics, and as the characters one by one particle itself is stress sensor and emitting material. In addition, recently, we succeeded to synthesize the ML nanoparticle with the size of 10 nm, and it is enough small to inject and use in bio-body. From these viewpoints, we believe that our ML nano- or micro- particle can be used as an ubiquitous light source even in the dark bio-tissue and cell. For the purpose, we have investigated mechanoluminescence induced by ultrasonic wave, non-destructive and non-inventive stimulation for bio-tissue, and we successfully detect the mechanoluminescence.

We developed a novel technique for bolt tightening control by utilizing SrAl2O4:Eu (SAOE) paint film to detect axial force generated during bolt tightening. The prevalently used bolt tightening control method is torque control, which indirectly controls the axial force in the bolted joint, but only a small proportion of the torque actually contributes to the bolt extension that generates the axial force to fasten bolt. Therefore, it is urgently necessary to directly measure the axial force in order to realize a smart tightening control. In the present work, we also demonstrated the correlation between the elastico-luminescence intensity and tightening conditions including tightening speed and strain as well as axial force.

Recently, the accidents in industrial infrastructures due to deterioration or lack of maintenance became a serious problem. Therefore, the appropriate maintenance methods, that extend its life span and reduce its repair cost, have been examined. This paper proposes the new maintenance method based on a novel mechanoluminescence sensor. The mechanoluminescence sensor is made of ceramic powders, and it emits according to the strain. This characteristic can be expected to visualize strain distribution on the structures directly, which this sensor is applied to. In this paper, we discussed the modeling method of the mechanoluminescence using neural network in oredr to use the sensor as the strain monitoring tool.

Force sensing in nano-scale can be realized by using nanoparticles of &ldquo;elastico-luminescence&rdquo; (a new inorganic material which emits light in response to externally applied mechanical stress in elastic region). By applying the material as a coating on the surface of subject, a technology for two-dimensional visualization of stress distribution has been innovated. In order to characterize the stress-induced luminescence from a single particle, we have developed an evaluation equipment utilizing an atomic force microscope (AFM) and photon counting system, and have succeeded in capturing the stress-induced luminescence from a single nanoparticle. The luminescence intensity increases with the increasing force on the nanoparticle, demonstrating that elastico-luminescence nanoparticle can act as force/strain sensor in nanometer region. A force sensor with a diameter of 20 nm has been developed.

Direct visualization of stress distribution by utilizing the elasticoluminescence phenomena is demonstrated. Europium-doped strontium aluminate (SrAl_2O_4: Eu) was prepared as a green elasticoluminescent material, and its powder was mixed with a resin to form elasticoluminescent coating on a substrate. Qualitative relation between the luminescent intensity and stress/strain rate is discussed. Examples of stress concentration on complex shaped objects are exemplified.

In recent years mechanoluminescence (ML) materials attracts attention. New ML material SrA12O4^Eu with remarkable upgrade in ML intensity is developed by Xu et.al. It emits an intensive and repeatable ML during elastic deformation without destruction. In this study, influence of the stress exerted on the luminescence characteristic of ML powder mixed with epoxy resin was investigated. Moreover, realization of visualizing of stress distribution was also considered.

Observation of stress distribution in an adhesive layer was carried out to mix a mecanoluminesence material. The novel material is ceramic powders which consist of SrAl_20_2:Eu and shows luminescence when loads are applied. Specimens of joints having transparent adherends of acrylic plates bonded with the adhesive including the mecanoluminesence material were prepared. Quasi static load or repeated load were applied to the specimen The luminescence of the adhesive layer were observed through the transparent adherend. Bright parts were found around the both edges of the joints. Therefore, it seems that the stress distribution along the bond line can be visualized by the method.

Emission and excitation spectra of X2-Y2SiO5 doped with Ce3+ ions have been investigated at room temperature, in which Ce3+ ions were added by using different starting materials of CeO2 (IV) or Ce(NO3)3&sdot;6H2O (III). The emission spectra were analyzed on the base of a Gaussian function to investigate the detailed optical characteristics of Ce3+. Y2SiO5 doped with CeO2 exhibited a broad spectrum with a tail in the range from 500 to 600nm. On the other hand, Y2SiO5 doped with Ce(NO3)3 gave a relatively sharp spectrum shorter than 500nm. With using fitting parameters based on Gaussian function, Y2SiO5 doped with CeO2 was found to show an additional Gaussian band around 430nm in contrast to the Ce(NO3)3 doped one. Furthermore, the fluorescence spectra under the excitation at 330nm indicated that a broad spectrum with a peak at 430nm is only observed in Y2SiO5 doped with CeO2. Such an emission spectrum is similar to the new Gaussian band at 430nm estimated from the parameter fitting. This implies that the new band actually exists, contributing to the tail of the emission spectra. These results give a new information on the occupation site of Ce3+ in the X2-Y2SiO5 matrix.

The study aims to develop the photo-function of soft crystals with molecular interface specificity. In particular, the molecular association by the wet-film formation process exhibits linearly polarized luminescence. It was expected that the transition dipole transition of the ligand by photoexcitation as the energy donor was related to the polarized luminescence of the acceptor, lanthanide ion. The result which proved this experimentally was obtained. The synthesis of a series of helical rare earth complexes in a unit of soft crystal and the system which explains the relation between the luminescence phenomenon and the distortion of the ligand field were found. For example, a chiral rare earth complex was synthesized and its structure was analyzed, and circularly polarized luminescence and its enhancement in aggregation were clarified. These results have reported widely in international journals as articles, reviews and books.

Near-infrared mechanoluminescent materials that emit near-infrared rays (800-1400 nm) with high biotransparency have been applied to biosensing. At first, we focused on the correlation between the mechanoluminescent intensity and the time. A new principal component analysis method that uses both time information and pixel value were developed. Even with high noise levels in the imaging device, the mechanoluminescent components were successfully separated when the mechanoluminescent intensity increased or decreased monotonically over time. In addition, we have developed a new multi-piezo material Sr3Sn2O7: Nd3+, which has an A21am crystal structure. We have succeeded in achieving 10 times higher mechanoluminescent intensity, repeated luminescence, and water resistance than those of conventional materials.

In this study, we tried to develop a new mechanoluminescence material responded to small strain of 0.01%. The feature of sensor using this mechanoluminescence material is to visualize two-dimensional strain distribution by using inexpensive industrial camera, leading to a construction of a safe and secure society. We selected strontium aluminate with stuffed tridymite structure as a host material because this host material can be easily introduced crystal defects. From the obtained results in this study, we found that the response toward small strain was influenced by the ratio of strontium and aluminium ions as well as a grain sized of precursor. Moreover, we challenged to fabricate a sheet-type sensor using the prepared material, and examined the sensing characteristics. As a result, the fabricated sensor could visualize the invisible crack on the back side of aluminum alloy plate and a orientation of fiber bundle in a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) plate.

The purpose of this study is development of the novel diagnosis technique of the structure (carbon fiber reinforced composit pressure vessel) using mechanoluminescent (ML) sensors. The ML materials are able to convert mechanical action to light intensity directly. The ML sensor was applied to the composite pressure vessel surface and fatigue tests were performed by the pressurization repeatedly. By observing the ML pattern, fatigue cracks of pressure vessel before that was breaking were successfully detected. The principal component analysis (PCA) was utilized for ML time series images. By comparing the first component of PCA results, singular ML pattern is obtained and fatigue crack position is successfully identified. In addition, by subtracting computed afterglow pattern from observed images during some load working, ML patterns are successfully extracted. This technique is based on the ML chalacteristic that the ML is independent to afterglow.

Fundamental mechanism of the triboelectromagnetic phenomena was analyzed focusing on the triboplasma generation and the guideline to the development of the triboplasma application technology was proposed. It was found that the triboplasma is generated even inside the sliding contact, and the photon emission from the inside of sliding contact under oil lubrication was shown to be caused by the excitation of the dissolved gas molecules. The temperature rise of the triboplasma was successfully measured to give that the triboplasma is non-equilibrium low temperature plasma. The mechanism of photon emission from the sliding surface was analyzed to be caused by the attack of the electrons in the plasma, and the triboplasma generationwas theoretically analyzed to give the potential and the charged particle distributions in the gap. Further, the mechanism of triboplasma generation under oil lubrication was clarified to be due to the electron avalanche process in the cavity formed in the rear gap of the sliding contact with a new model. It was proposed that triboplasma can be controlled by magnetic field application and control of the electric resistivity of tribomaterials.

The material in a high energy intense proton beam field receives damage due to an intense thermal shock and radiation. A shock damage process and influence were investigated experimentally and the easing method was drawn. Moreover, the simulation code which evaluates a radiation trauma theoretically was developed. Furthermore, our grain boundary engineering method has succeeded the four times increase in corrosion resistivity of various austenite stainless steels. New tungsten material developed with a ultra-fine grain powder has four times higher toughness than that of commercial tungsten and does ductility even at a room temperature. The quantitative method using the stress luminescence material in a shock experiment was devised to improve a material dynamics study.
