Abstract We used a neuromusculoskeletal model of bipedal walking to examine the effects of foot–ground friction conditions and gait patterns on slip- and trip-induced falls. We developed three two-dimensional neuro-musculoskeletal models in a self-organized manner representing young adults, elderly non-fallers, and elderly fallers. We simulated walking under different foot-ground friction conditions. The static friction coefficient between the foot and the ground was varied from 0.05 to 2.0. Under low friction conditions, the three gait models demonstrated slip-induced falls. The elderly faller model experienced the most slip. This is because the RCOF was higher in the elderly faller model due to its short stride length but much smaller foot clearance. Under high friction conditions, only the elderly faller model demonstrated trip-induced falls. Based on the analysis using the margin of stability, the forward postural stability of the model gradually decreased under high-friction conditions, with the toe of the swing foot contacting the ground and subsequently falling forward. These results imply that there is an optimal coefficient of friction for the ground to prevent slip- and trip-induced falls by people with less stable gaits, which may provide new insights into the design of shoes and floor surfaces for the elderly.

In this study, we developed a lightweight shoe sensor system equipped with four high-capacity, compact triaxial force sensors and an inertial measurement unit. Remarkably, this system enabled measurements of localized three-directional ground reaction forces (GRFs) at each sensor position (heel, first and fifth metatarsal heads, and toe) and estimations of stride length and toe clearance during walking. Compared to conventional optical motion analysis systems, the developed sensor system provided relatively accurate results for stride length and minimum toe clearance. To test the performance of the system, 15 older and 8 young adults were instructed to walk along a straight line while wearing the system. The results reveal that compared to the young adults, older adults exhibited lower localized GRF contributions from the heel and greater localized GRF contribution from the toe and fifth metatarsal locations. Furthermore, the older adults exhibited greater variability in their stride length and smaller toe clearance with greater variability compared to the young adults. These results underscore the effectiveness of the proposed gait analysis system in distinguishing the gait characteristics of young and older adults, potentially replacing traditional motion capture systems and force plates in gait analysis.

Abstract This study employed a digital image correlation method (DICM) to experimentally quantify horizontal strain distribution in silicone rubber bulk during horizontal displacement against a stainless-steel sphere with/without glycerol. The strain distribution at different depth levels was measured by capturing the position of white powders in transparent rubber bulk. The experimental results indicated that each point in the rubber bulk moved while describing a horizontal loop during horizontal displacement depending on the position and lubrication conditions. This caused changes in the horizontal strain during horizontal displacement. These results suggest that the hysteresis term could be caused by changes in the vertical and horizontal strains.

Although various measures have been proposed to evaluate dynamic balance during walking, it is currently unclear which measures are most sensitive to dynamic balance. We aimed to investigate which dynamic balance measure is most sensitive to detecting differences in dynamic balance during walking across various gait parameters, including short- and long-term Lyapunov exponents ( λs and λl ), margin of stability (MOS), distance between the desired and measured centre of pressure (dCOP–mCOP) and whole-body angular momentum (WBAM). A total of 10 healthy young adults were asked to walk on a treadmill under three different conditions (normal walking, dual-task walking with a Stroop task as an unstable walking condition, and arm-restricted walking with arms restricted in front of the chest as another unstable walking condition) that were expected to have different dynamic balance properties. Overall, we found that λs of the centre of mass velocity, λs of the trunk velocity, λs of the hip joint angle, and the magnitude of the mediolateral dCOP–mCOP at heel contact can identify differences between tasks with a high sensitivity. Our findings provide new insights into the selection of sensitive dynamic balance measures during human walking.

Abstract In this study, we aimed to discover (1) the effects of age on dynamic balance measures, including the margin of stability (MOS), whole-body angular momentum (H), and misalignment of the desired and measured centers of pressure (dCOP and mCOP, respectively) in the anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML) directions, (2) the relationship between gait parameters and these balance measures, and (3) the relationships between these balance measures. We used the kinetic and kinematic data of 151 participants aged 20–77 years from a publicly available database. Participants were divided into three groups: young, middle-aged, and old. The step width of the old group was higher than that of the young group. Age-related differences in dynamic measures were found in the ML direction and not in the AP direction: MOS, peak-to-peak range of H, and dCOP–mCOP in the old group were greater than in the young group. ML MOS positively correlated with the frontal peak-to-peak range of H. The ML peak-to-peak range of H positively correlated with ML dCOP–mCOP across the adult lifespan. Our findings provide new insights for understanding the effects of age on dynamic balance and the relationships between the metrics. Older adults walked with a larger step width, resulting in a large stability margin in the ML direction, although with increased moment and momentum around the center of mass in the frontal plane.

<title>Abstract</title>High slip-resistant footwear outsoles can reduce the risk of slip and fall on wet and icy surfaces. Falls on wet and icy surfaces can cause serious life-threatening injuries, especially for older adults. Here we show that footwear outsoles using the rubbers filled with activated carbon or sodium chloride produce higher friction force and reduce the slip rate in walking. We have identified that small depressions were formed on outsole materials filled with activated carbon or sodium chloride during friction between the rubber and surface leading to some air ingress into the interface. While there are air bubbles between the rubber and surface, real contacts are surrounded by water with negative pressure (Laplace pressure). It is considered that the negative pressure promotes real contact formation, which causes high friction. We consider that the outsole materials filled with activated carbon or sodium chloride can reduce the risk of slip-and-fall accidents.

<title>Abstract</title>Herein, we investigated the effect of friction between foot sole and floor on the external forward moment about the body center of mass (COM) in normal and shuffling gaits. Five young male adults walked with normal and shuffling gaits, under low- and high-friction surface conditions. The maximum external forward moment about the COM (MEFM-COM) in a normal gait appeared approximately at initial foot contact and was unaffected by floor condition. However, MEFM-COM in a shuffling gait under high-friction conditions exceeded that under low-friction conditions (p &lt; 0.001). Therein, MEFM-COM increased with an increasing utilized coefficient of friction at initial foot contact; this effect was weaker during a normal gait. These findings indicate that increased friction between foot sole and floor might increase tripping risk during a shuffling gait, even in the absence of discrete physical obstacles.

Relationship between shoe grip properties and distributions of traction coefficient, which is obtained from horizontal ground reaction force (GRF) divided by normal GRF, were experimentally investigated during running. The experiments were conducted with sensor shoes mounted miniature triaxial force sensors for the measurement of GRF distributions in contact area. In order to clarify influence of the grip property on GRF vectors distributions and traction coefficient distributions, two typed sensor shoes having different outer sole materials with high/low friction coefficients were developed. The results showed that traction coefficients for the low grip typed shoe decreased in the whole contact area at the end of stance phase during running. Furthermore, it was confirmed that contact area, directions of GRF vectors and traction coefficients locally changed depending on the grip property. As a result of relationship between distributions of propulsion force components at 19 local positions and stride length, production of propulsion force beneath toe area can efficiently acquire sufficient stride length to keep running speed.

The present preliminary study examined whether an increase in the lateral width of footwear (base-of-support width) can reduce the risk of falling caused by induced lateral slip while turning on slippery surfaces. Wide base-of-support (BOS) footwear was designed and manufactured, with lateral widening achieved by fixing a BOS extension, using a planar linkage of 70-mm width on the lateral side of normal BOS footwear. Gait trials were conducted on 16 young healthy male adults. Subjects were instructed to walk in a straight line and to turn 60° to the right on a stainless steel floor covered with glycerol solution. As compared with the normal BOS footwear, the wide BOS footwear reduced the frequency of trials in which fall occurred due to lateral slip by up to 67% and the slip distance and slip velocity of the supporting foot were reduced by up to 40% and 35%, respectively. The results demonstrated the efficacy of increased lateral BOS width in reducing the risk of fall caused by induced lateral slip.

The friction and wear properties of a sintered porous Cu alloy impregnated with either Thermo-Reversible Gel-Lubricant (TR Gel-Lube) or base fluid (PAO) were investigated. Friction tests were conducted under a wide range of normal loads (0.98 N, 9.8 N, and 19.6 N) and sliding velocities (0.2 m/s, 0.5 m/s, 1.0 m/s, and 2.1 m/s), using a high-carbon chromium steel (JIS-SUJ2) bearing ball with 8 mm diameter as a ball specimen. The friction coefficients of the sintered Cu alloy impregnated with TR Gel-Lube were lower than those of the alloy impregnated with the base fluid under a wide range of normal loads and sliding velocities. Particularly, the friction coefficient of the sintered Cu alloy impregnated with TR Gel-Lube had extremely low value - less than 0.05 at high normal load and high sliding velocity. The specific wear rates of the sintered Cu alloy impregnated with base fluid and that impregnated with TR Gel-Lube had low values - less than 10-8 mm2/N under a wide range of normal loads and sliding velocities. There was no significant difference in wear rates between the two impregnants.

This study investigated the effect of a particle diameter and a weight fraction of RB ceramics particles on friction and wear of polyamide 66 composites filled with RB ceramics particles (PA66/RB ceramics composites) sliding against a bearing steel ball under dry condition. RB ceramics particles with a mean diameter of 3, 30, and 150 μm were used as the filler. Weight fractions of RB ceramics particles were 10, 30, and 50 mass% for the mean diameter of the particles of 3 μm, and 30, 50, and 70 mass% for the mean diameters of 30 and 150 μm. The smaller mean diameter and the higher weight fraction of RB ceramics particles provided lower friction coefficients and lower specific wear rates with the PA66/RB ceramics composites. The composite with a mean diameter and a weight fraction of RB ceramics particles of 30 μm and 70 mass% took the lowest friction coefficient of 0.27 among the composites. The composite with a mean diameter and a weight fraction of RB ceramics particles of 3 μm and 50 mass% took the lowest specific wear rate of 1.3 × 10-9mm2/N among the composites, which was equivalent to the specific wear rate of RB ceramics disk.

Friction and wear properties of the copper/carbon/RB ceramics (Cu/C/RBC) composite were investigated under electrical current with and without arc-discharge. The weight fraction and the mean diameter of RB ceramics powder were 5 wt% and 4.9 μm, respectively, in the Cu/C/RBC composite. Friction tests were conducted with the block-on-ring friction apparatus. The Cu/C/RBC and the copper/carbon (Cu/C) composite, the conventional pantograph slider material of a railway current collector, were used as block specimens. Under electrical current without arc-discharge, the Cu/C/RBC composite showed 98% reduction in the specific wear rate of the block specimen, 23% reduction in that of the ring specimen, and 75% reduction in the friction coefficient over the conventional Cu/C composite. Under electrical current with arc-discharge, the Cu/C/RBC composite showed the wear resistance to arc-discharge equivalent to the conventional Cu/C composite.

The maximum peak value of traction coefficient between a shoe sole and a floor at heel-strike period |Fh/Fn|h and that at toe-off period |Fh/Fn|t for normal-style and Nanba-style walking were investigated in this paper. The Nanba-style walking is known as Japanese traditional walking style. The characteristics of the Nanba-style walking different from the normal-style walking are knee flexion, anteversion of the upper body and small swing of the arms. Gait experiments were carried out on a dry level walkway. Four healthy male adults participated in the gait experiments, and they were asked to walk in the normal-style and the Nanba-style walking under a wide range of step length and walking speed. Ground reaction forces and full body kinematics were captured. The results indicated that |Fh/Fn|h of the Nanba-style walking was significantly (p<0.05) smaller than that of the normal-style walking under a wide range of walking conditions. Kinematic analysis of the Nanba-style walking indicated that reduction in friction requirement for such walking style would be due to anteriorly displacing the whole body COM as compared with that of the normal-style walking, resulting in decrease of the distance between the whole body COM and the COP in horizontal-plane. While a statistically significant difference of |Fh/Fn|t between these two walking styles were not observed, mean |Fh/Fn|t of the Nanba-style walking was smaller than that of the normal-style walking under a wide range of walking conditions.

The authors have developed the new hard porous carbon material "Rice Husk ceramics" (RH ceramics) by carbonizing the mixture of rice husk and phenol resin at 900 °C in inert gas environment. The RH ceramics are composed of amorphous carbon and amorphous silica, about 90 and 10 wt.%, respectively. The friction and wear properties of RH ceramics sliding against austenitic stainless steel (JIS SUS304) were evaluated under dry and water lubricated conditions using a ball-on-disk apparatus. The test results showed that RH ceramics have lower friction coefficients and specific wear rates under dry than under water lubricated condition. The friction coefficient took very low values of 0.06 to 0.11 under dry condition, whereas, it was 0.09 to 0.15 under water lubricated condition. The specific wear rate was less than 10-8 mm2/N under both conditions, though it was much lower under dry than under water lubricated condition. Transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron diffraction analyses were employed to characterize the properties of the worn surfaces of SUS304 ball samples. It was found that the tribological behavior of RH ceramics is strongly governed by the characteristics of the transferred film formed on counterpart surfaces.

Although cavitation normally causes severe damage in hydraulic machinery, cavitation impact can be utilized for surface treatment in the same way as shot peening. The peening method using cavitation impact is named as cavitation peening. Plastic deformation pits induced by peening changes friction characteristics on metallic surface. When friction coefficient μ decreases with slipping velocity v, stick-slip occurs. In order to reduce negative slope of μ-v curve to eliminate stick-slip, friction characteristics of peened surface was evaluated. Tested material was quenched spheroidal graphite cast iron which was used as guides for working machines. The friction coefficient was measured by using two types of ball on plate machine. It was revealed that the negative slope of μ-v curve on the surface was improved by plastic deformation pits induced by cavitation peening and shot peening.

The new hard porous carbon material called the RH (rice husk) ceramics has been developed by carbonizing rice husk as the main raw material. In order to clarify the friction and wear properties of RH ceramics, a study of the effect of carbonization temperature on the mechanical and tribological properties of RH ceramics was undertaken. RH ceramics samples carbonized at 900, 1400, and 1500 °C were prepared for this study. The RH ceramics samples were inspected using X-ray diffraction, EDX and scanning electron microscopy. Mechanical properties of RH ceramics such as Vickers hardness, compressive strength, and bulk density were also studied. The RH ceramics carbonized at 1500 °C had much higher porosity compared to the ones carbonized at lower temperatures. In addition, the bulk density and compressive strength decreased with increasing carbonization temperature. Whereas, the hardness was higher for the RH ceramics carbonized at higher temperatures. Ball-on-disk sliding tests showed that the RH ceramics carbonized at the conventional 900 °C have better friction and wear properties compared to the ones carbonized at 1400 and 1500 °C under dry condition sliding against austenitic stainless steel (JIS SUS304). The friction coefficient and specific wear rate took very low values of 0.07 and less and 5.0×10-10mm2/N and less, correspondingly, for the RH ceramics carbonized at 900 °C. Based on the experimental results, friction and wear mechanisms have been summarized for each carbonization temperature.

This paper presents the effect of load carrying (position and weight of load) on the maximum peak values of traction coefficient between shoe sole and floor during walking on level walkway. Gait experiments were conducted by five healthy male adult participants walking on the force plates with carrying the loads. Each subject was tested at step length of 0.75 m and at walking speed of 1.4 m/s. They were instructed to carry the loads by three different ways; a 2-handed load carrying, a back-pack load carrying, and a waist level front load carrying. Weight of load was 49, 98, 147 or 196 N for each way of load carrying. For a waist level front load carrying, the maximum peak traction coefficient at heel strike period |Fh/Fn|h statistically significantly (p < 0.01) decreased with increasing of weight of load. On the other hand for other ways of load carrying, |Fh/Fn|h was not affected significantly (p > 0.05) by weight of load. For each way of load carrying, the maximum peak value of traction coefficient at toe-off period |Fh/Fn|t had tendency to increase with increase of weight of load. The relationship between the slip potential and the COM position change by load carrying were also discussed.

In order to realize reducing wear of both overhead wires and pantograph sliders, the authors have developed new composite materials for pantograph sliders by using hard porous carbon materials "RB ceramics". The new composite materials were developed by sintering compounds of copper, carbon and the RB ceramics particles. Friction and wear properties of these copper/carbon/RB ceramics composite materials (Cu/C/RBC composites) sliding against a copper alloy pin under dry condition were investigated. The friction coefficient for the Cu/C/RBC composites was lower and more stable than that for the conventional pantograph slider material, Cu/C composite. The friction coefficient for the Cu/C/RBC composites was about 1/2 ∼ 3/5 of that for the Cu/C composite. The specific wear rate of the Cu/C/RBC composites was extremely lower than that of the Cu/C composite. The specific wear rate of the Cu/C/RBC composites was decreased with a decrease of the weight fraction and the mean particle size of the RB ceramics particles. The specific wear rate of the Cu/C/RBC composites was about 1/220 ∼ 1/70 of that of the conventional Cu/C composite. Furthermore, the specific wear rate of a copper alloy pin sliding against the Cu/C/RBC composites is about 1/1700 ∼ 1/150 of that sliding against the conventional Cu/C composite.

The effect of gait parameters such as step length and walking speed on the traction coefficient and the slip between a shoe sole and a walkway was clarified experimentally, and desirable gait to reduce the chance of slipping was also suggested. The maximum peak value of traction coefficient obtained at heel-strike period |Fh/Fn|h and that at toe-off period |Fh/Fn|t increased with an increase of step length irrespective of subjects when walking on dry walkway. Meanwhile, |Fh/Fn|h or |Fh/Fn|t slightly decreased or took almost constant value with respect to walking speed. Based on the results of gait experiments on glycerin-lubricated walkway, it was clarified that a walk with a shorter step length and a higher walking speed was effective for prevention of slip irrespective of subjects, and such a gait provided a shorter slip distance. The reason why the smaller maximum peak values of traction coefficient can be obtained in case of walking with a shorter step length and a higher walking speed was discussed based on the kinematic analysis using the body center of mass (COM) and center of pressure of shoe sole (COP).

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating technology has been receiving increasing attention in recent years for its application to automotive sliding parts. As it is critical to evaluate the adhesion strength between a film and a substrate for assessment of the reliability of DLC films, a practical method to assess film damage under repeated sliding motions is needed. This research clarified the conditions under which damage is generated on Si-containing DLC films by analyzing damage modes such as wear, spalling, and cracking of the films under an automatic transmission fluid (ATF) lubrication condition and repeated sliding friction. The research also confirmed the effectiveness of the evaluation method. The test results indicated that the Si-containing DLC film has the highest reliability compared to the other types of films tested using the same test method.

    More details Close

It was found that the key points of time reduction of bobsleigh were to reduce friction resistance between the runner and ice, and to improve the start technique, from the results of bobsleigh's dynamic analysis. Then, the authors designed and manufactured a new bobsleigh runner based on elastic-plastic contact analysis, which realized minimum contact area between the runner and ice within the shape that prevents ploughing term in friction force. The developed bobsleigh runner based on the analysis was named as "Nagano Special". Additionally, the authors suggested a new start technique called "Keri-Nori", which was quite different from the conventional start technique of the Japanese bobsleigh team, and verified its benefit. By using the newly developed bobsleigh runner "Nagano Special" and the new start technique "Keri-Nori", the Japanese bobsleigh team took the 4th place among the world 44 teams in the international official tryout held on February 1998 just before Nagano Olympic Games.

In this study, polymer composites filled with RB ceramic (RBC) particles were developed and those mechanical properties and tribological properites under water lubrication were experimentally investigated. The hardness and strength of the composites increased with decreasing RBC particle diameter. The results of sliding friction tests under water lubrication indicated that PEEK and POM composites filled with 20 vol% RBC particles with a dimater less than 5 micro-meters exhibited low friction and low specific wear rate less than 10-9 mm2/N. The value of the specific wear rate is 1/10 of that for steel/steel contact under oil lubrication (10-8 mm2/N).The results indicated that the developed composite materials have 10 times higher wear resistance than steel materials under water lubrication.

In this study, the measurement of the traction coefficient between shoe sole and floor during walking indicated that the static and kinetic friction coefficients greater than 0.4 are needed at the shoe-floor interface in order to prevent slip-induced falls. It was also indicated that the gait with a small body lean angle resulted in low traction coefficient, which leads to less slip risk. The shape of shoe tread block which provides the static and kinetic friction coefficients greater than 0.4 over oil-lubricated floor surfaces was found experimentally. In addition, a shoe mounted with miniature tri-axial force sensors was developed and the distribution of required friction coefficient and application direction of friction force in the shoe-floor contact area during walking was investigated. These results will aid in the development of slip-resistant shoe sole over floor surface contaminated with oils.

In this study, we developed footwear that is effective in preventing falls due to induced slip in the lateral direction during turning. Turning gait trial on a slippery floor was conducted with healthy young adult participants wearing normal footwear and BOS (base of support) widened footwear. The results indicated that the BOS widened footwear, in which the BOS was widened more than 15 mm in the lateral direction, reduced the frequency of fall by more than 50% compared with the normal footwear. The kinematic analysis revealed that the BOS widened footwear shortened a length of compensatory stepping to prevent falling after slipping, which resulted in the reduced frequency of fall.

In the present study, a low-frictional elastomer and high-frictional resin composites were developed using low-density particles, which are plant-derived materials, as a friction conditioner. According to the friction tests under a wide range of conditions, the carbon particles which are made from rice bran can contribute to extremely low friction under dry and water lubrication, which the pure elastomer cannot achieve. In addition, the bamboo particles can contribute to higher friction under water and oil lubrication, compared with the pure resin. The elastomer composite filled with the carbon particles was expected to use as bearing, mechanical seal used in water. The resin composite filled with bamboo particles was expected to use as a chopsticks material.

The Purpose of this study is to develop new fabrication process of RB ceramics by using injection molding, and to apply them to tribo-elements. New RB ceramics fabricated by using injection molding have been developed, and their size reduction rate during carbonization and mechanical properties were clarified in 2003. The new fabrication process of RB ceramics were as follows ; The form of the mixture of RB ceramics and phenol resin was molded by injection molding, and then the new RB ceramics were fabricated by carbonizing the form in nitrogen gas at 900 ℃. It was clarified that the size reduction rate of the newly developed RB ceramics was less than 5% which was one-fifth of that of conventional RB ceramics (25%) made by using press molding. Then, it was also clarified that young's modulus of the newly developed RB ceramics was 15GPa, and the compressive strength was 270MPa which was about 4.5 times higher than that of the conventional RB ceramics. Tribological properties of the newly developed RB ceramics sliding against alumina, bearing steel ball and austenitic stainless steel under dry and oil lubricated conditions were clarified in 2004. As a result, it was clarified that a newly developed RB ceramics showed superior tribological properties under dry and oil lubricated conditions. Therefore, the newly developed RB ceramics fabricated by using injection molding are expected to be practically applied to the materials of sliding bearing. The effect of temperature on tribological properties of the newly developed RB ceramics was clarified in 2005. As a result, it was clarified that the newly developed RB ceramics showed superior tribological properties under dry condition at high temperature. Therefore, the newly developed RB ceramics are expected to be practically applied to the materials of the dry type clutch plates.

Our research group had found that thin lubricious hard coatings such as amorphous carbon nitride (CNx) coating gave super-low friction (0.01 order of friction coefficient) in particular when combined with adsorbed gases of nitrogen. The purpose of this research was to analyze super-low friction mechanisms of carbon nitride coatings with adsorbed nitrogen gas. In addition, necessary coating condition and operating condition for giving such super low friction was clarified. The following results were mainly obtained. 1.Sliding between CNx coating against CNx coated ball generates stable friction coefficient of about 0.01-0.02 by blowing of nitrogen gas. In such condition, wear rate of ball shows very low value of 1.13x10^<-8>mm^3/Nm. 2.Optimum value of blowing nitrogen gas to generate stable and low friction coefficient is around 2.10cc/mm^2s. 3.Low friction mechanism of the CNx coating by nitrogen gas is explained by two models ;(a)friction mechanism to shows about 0.1 and (b)friction mechanism to show between 0.01 and 0.1. 4.On all wear scars when low friction coefficient of 0.1 is generated in this research, Raman spectra show certain structural changes, indicating the increase in the size and/or number of the sp^2 microdomain that can be considered as a very small graphitic structure. Therefore, it is considered that low friction in this system is generated by the graphitic structure, which has low shearing strength. 5.Friction coefficient of CNx/CNx in particular under N_2 blow increases from 0.01 up to 0.1 by ion irradiation. Thus, it is considered that electrification on the wear surface affect on low friction mechanism of the CNx coating by nitrogen gas.

According to this method solid lubricant is evaporating during the process of sliding and depositing on the friction surfaces. The possibility of this method to decrease friction has been shown using pin-on-disk apparatus. The purpose of this research was so show its possibility so apply rolling bearing in high vacuum from the view points of low and stable friction and its endless life. In addition, optimum-coaling condition to give stable and low friction wan clarified. The following results were mainly obtained: (1) Friction coefficient of a ball bearing, which has silicon nitride balls/stainless steel rings and stainless steel retainer, is kept lower than 0.002 by the in-situ tribo-coating with indium. This value is almost same as that of conventional solid lubricant such as ion-plated Ag film. (2) In the case of hybrid bearing with stainless steel races and silicon nitride balls, stable and low friction of 0.002 could be kept until 10^7 cycles with two times tribo-coating of indium. (3) The ceramic bats/stainless steel rings bearing of no retainer shows ten times longer life than of a retainer. (4) Optimum coating speed of indium for tribo-coating was 6-20 nm/min, in which stable and low friction of 0.002 was obtained. (5) Optimum coating thickness during stable friction was 100-400 nm that was formed under contact pressure of 800-1400 MPa.
