Profile

My research examines the complex web of global diplomacy, travel, trade, and intelligence gathering in early modern East Asia, focusing particularly on the trilateral dynamics among Japan, Korea, and China during the 17th-19th centuries. Moving beyond traditional bilateral analyses, I adopt a global history perspective that draws upon Japanese, Korean, and Chinese sources to provide a comprehensive understanding of these interconnected relationships.
My first monograph, Kai hentai no Higashi Ajia: kinsei Nihon, Chōsen, Chūgoku sangoku kankeishi no kenkyū (East Asia in the Ka-i hentai transformation: trilateral relations among Tokugawa-Chosŏn and China in the 17-19th centuries), investigates the crucial role of Chosŏn Korea and Tsushima domain as a diplomatic intermediary between Tokugawa Japan and Ming-Qing China.
My ongoing research expands upon these themes by exploring the mechanisms of information transmission and manipulation, particularly examining how Chosŏn Korea and the Tsushima domain influenced the formation and maintenance of East Asia's international order.
Additionally, I collaborate with astronomers to analyze historical astronomical and meteorological phenomena, adding an interdisciplinary dimension to our understanding of this pivotal period in East Asian history.

Abstract Historical weather records from Europe indicate that the Earth experienced substantial climate variability, which caused, for instance, the Little Ice Age and the global crisis in the period between the 14th and 19th centuries. However, it is still unclear how global this climate variability was because of the scarce meteorological data availability in other regions including East Asia, especially around the 17th century. In this context, Seungjeongwon Ilgi, a daily record of the Royal Secretariat of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea, is a precious source of historical meteorological records for the Korean Peninsula, as it covers 288 years of weather observations made during 1623–1910. We used the digital database of Seungjeongwon Ilgi to construct a machine‐readable weather condition dataset. To this end, we extracted valid weather information from the original weather description text and compiled them into pre‐defined weather categories. Additionally, we attempted to improve the usability of dataset by converting the reported dates in the traditional calendar system to those in the Gregorian calendar. Finally, we outlined promising implications of this dataset for meteorological and climatological studies, while describing the limitations of the dataset. Overall, future studies focusing on the climate and weather of the past could use this meteorological database for investigating long‐term climate variability. Our datasets are publicly available at 10.5281/zenodo.8382243.

Eirene Laskarina, Empress of John III Batatzes of the exiled Byzantine Empire of Nicaea (1204–1261 CE), was an important Eastern Mediterranean figure in the first half of the thirteenth century. We reassess the death day of Eirene, which has been variously dated during the years between the end of 1239 and 1241, with the understanding that narrowing the range in which this event occurred contributes much to understanding the political situation in the area around 1240. George Akropolites, a famous official of the Empire, gives an account that connects Eirene's death to a comet that appeared “six months earlier,” thus pointing to two comet candidates that were visible from the Eastern Mediterranean during the years 1239 and 1241, one recorded on “1239 June 3” and the other on “1240 January 31.” Recent historians prefer the former, based on historical circumstances and without a critical assessment of the comet records. We revisit the historical records and reveal that the “1239 June 3” candidate was not a comet. On the other hand, the other candidate was a comet, as supported by multiple historical records in multiple regions, and is also a good fit with Akropolites’ narrative. Therefore, we conclude that Eirene died six months after the comet that was seen on 1240 January 31, which places her death in the summer of 1240. Given that her death day is crucial for determining some other contemporary events across the Eastern Mediterranean, our results offer a solid basis for further research on the thirteenth-century Eastern Mediterranean.

Cometary tails visually manifest the solar wind and became a first hint for its discovery. While the solar wind is being directly monitored with satellites, its time series before the space age has been controversially reconstructed with multiple proxies. Recently, cometary plasma tail observations have been subjected to consideration to indirectly measure the solar wind but brought conclusion that no plasma tail has been reported prior to 1769 probably due to their brightness. However, historical records have occasionally reported comets with two tails even before 1769 and these cases have been tentatively associated with visual reports of cometary plasma and dust tails. Therefore, we examined three such cases (C/1577 V1, 1P/837, and 1P/760), compared the descriptions in historical records with calculated direction of their plasma tails. Our comparisons show that the records and calculations agree in these cases and plasma tails were visually recorded corresponding to these three great comets. These cases certify the capability of plasma tail observations with the unaided eye even before 1769, qualitatively imply their extreme brightness, proximities with the Sun and the Earth, and relative enhancements of UV radiations and interaction of cometary neutral atmosphere with solar wind plasma and magnetic field, while the lack of their detailed length or kink hinders us from their quantitative measuring. Further investigations will probably lead to the re-discovery of even more visual evidence of cometary plasma tail and, hence, improve our understanding on past space climate.

Joseon missions to Japan (Ko. Joseon:Tongsinsa) were goodwill missions sent intermittently by Joseon Dynasty Korea at the request of the Japanese bakufu authorities. During the Edo period, these missions were dispatched to the Tokugawa shogunate 12 times between 1607 and 1811. The Joseon Dynasty was during this period a vassal state of Ming China before 1637, and then of Qing China after 1637. In consideration of the early-modern diplomatic principle in East Asia that "the minister of a prince had no intercourse outside his own state" (Ch. Ren chen zhe wu wai jiao 人臣者無外交), the Joseon Dynasty, as a vassal state, should have been prohibited from building any diplomatic relationship with Tokugawa Japan without the permission of the suzerain. Nonetheless, there has been little research on the whether and how the suzerain-vassal relationship between Ming and Qing China and Joseon Korea impacted the relationship between Joseon Korea and Japan, not to mention the impact on Joseon missions to Japan, which was a crucial representation of the good-neighborly relationship. By paying close attention to suzerain-vassal relationships, issues concerning the Joseon missions to Japan may be examined more comprehensively. In this article, I use the Waejeong Jamun (Ch. Woqing Ziwen 倭情咨文), official reports on the Japanese political situation that were sent by the Joseon dynasty to Ming and Qing China, as a case study to offer a solution to this problem. The Waejeong Jamun have previously been seen as an effective tool for addressing the issue of Joseon Korea's relations with Qing China, and of great significance on Qing China's policy and attitude toward Tokugawa Japan. Among the Waejeong Jamun are some on the preparation, dispatching, and debriefing of Joseon missions to Japan that contain vital clues. After decoding the reports related to the Joseon missions to Japan, it is clear that in making the decision to dispatch missions to Japan from 1636 to 1811, Joseon Dynasty officially asked for Qing China's permission. However, in actuality, the Joseon Dynasty independently made the decision to send missions after 1655. As for the dispatching of Hoedam-gyeom-swaehwansa (Jp. Kaito-ken-sakkanshi 回答兼刷還使) from 1607 to 1624, the Joseon Dynasty officially sought Ming's approval for the dispatch of missions to Japan; however, in reality they began all the preparations and even sent delegations prior to sending the report to Ming China, which indicates that the report had gradually become a mere formality. For the Joseon mission to Japan in 1643, the dispatch was decided according to the will of Qing Emperor Hong Taiji. By deciphering three reports relating to the 1643 mission, we can see the consistency of Hong Taiji's deep concerns about Japan during his reign. Hong Taiji not only showed strong interest in Japan, i.e. an intention of trading with Japan, which appeared in Namhansanseong Treaty 南漢山詔諭 in 1637 as a post-war settlement of the Second Manchu invasion of Korea, but also sent ministers to the Korean House in Mukden 瀋館 to collect intelligence on the Japanese. Moreover, Hong Taiji intended to utilize Joseon missions to Japan as a channel to collect Japanese intelligence, so he paid special attention to the 1643 mission and intervened directly in its dispatch. The Joseon mission to Japan in 1643 has been regarded as exceptional because it was dispatched for the birth of the young prince 若君, instead of the succession of a new shogun, which was the reason for the dispatch of other Joseon missions to Japan. Thus at first, the Joseon Dynasty passively dispatched missions upon Japanese request; later, the suggestion of Choe Myeonggil 崔鳴吉 is considered the main reason for the positive change in the Joseon court's attitude towards the missions, as Nakao Hiroshi has pointed out However, this article envisions the significant role played by Qing China as the promoter of the Joseon Dynasty's missions, particularly the 1643 mission, and thus how this mission embodied the relationship between Qing China and the Joseon missions to Japan.
