Based on the lessons learned from the East Japan Great Earthquake of March 11, 2011, the authors have been engaged in the research and development of movable and deployable information and communication technology (ICT) resource units (MDRUs), which provide immediate and minimally required ICT service in areas struck by disaster. The MDRU is a transportable unit that contains equipment necessary for ICT service provisions and is designed to be quickly transported to and set up in affected areas after a natural disaster has struck. The unit is used to quickly construct a wireless local network in the area, and thus provide immediate and minimally required ICT service to the people in the area. In this paper, we describe MDRU technology and other technologies that lead to improved performance and/or service when connected or linked up with the unit. Along with this development, we have conducted various activities aimed at its international deployment. Specifically, we conducted trials with resident participation in the Philippines and Nepal to verify the validity of these technologies overseas, where we were able to confirm its validity under various conditions. Furthermore, we have undertaken activities for its standardization, and have succeeded in the standardization of MDRU at International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T).

The study focused on the research and development of ICT for disaster preparedness and response with respect to two categories, namely, the delivery of alert messages to a wider group of residents and providing quick relief communications in affected areas. In the former category, the development focused on two targets, one involving the delivery of alert messages to indoor residents with a V-Low broadcasting service and the other involving the delivery of an alert message to individuals with disabilities and difficulties in understanding Japanese. In the latter category, a portable ICT unit was developed for rapid relief communications and mesh network technology enabling robust information sharing among base stations in the affected area was developed. Furthermore, a related development focused on a resilient information management system to collect information in areas that do not have access to the Internet. Furthermore, device relay technology was developed to expand access network cover areas. After the development of individual technology, activities for the societal implementation of the development results were conducted through field experiments and disaster drills in which the developed technologies were integrated and utilized.

Recently, in order to improve the exhaustion of the frequency in the terrestrial network, satellite and terrestrial network combination system have been attracted much attention. In this combination system, the assigned frequency band of satellite communication is distributed to satellite and terrestrial network, so it is possible to improve the problem. Also, the area such as mountain region and sea is hard to deploy the base stations. Since satellite has broad coverage, users can communication with satellite there. Furthermore, if terrestrial infrastructure is destroyed when the natural disaster strikes, there is big demand to communicate but many users cannot communicate with someone. In this time, satellite have no damage because it is in space. Therefore many users can reliable communicate with someone. In frequency distribution, the exhaustion of the frequency is improved when the frequency band is distributed to terrestrial network. However, in the case satellite and terrestrial network is distributed the duplicate frequency band, the interference occur and frequency efficiency is decreased in the combination system. In this study, we propose a determination of the frequency distribution for maximizing frequency efficiency considering interference in satellite and terrestrial network combination system.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been attracting much attention as a network component that provides network connectivity to out of service areas in cellular networks. Such UAVs can increase their coverage area compared to a single-UAV network by a constructing mesh network with swarm of UAVs. However, due to both the limitation of wireless communication range and mobility of UAVs, sometimes inter-UAV links are disconnected. Link disconnections degrade network performance such as successful communication ratio and end-to-end delay. Then, we formulate the relationship between UAVs' trajectories and probability of inter-UAV link connection. Based on the formulated relationship, we propose the trajectory decision scheme for improving probability of end-to-end link connection. Furthermore, we conduct computer simulations to evaluate the performance of our proposed scheme.

After drastic disasters, such as earthquakes and tsunamis, communications systems can be destroyed while the demand for communication services increases. This leads to congestion in remaining communication systems. Therefore, the networks which are resilience to disasters are gaining much attention. In this paper, we focus on satellite-terrestrial wireless mesh integrated networks that combines satellites networks and Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN). This network makes it possible to provide communications after disaster. In order to utilize the satellite-terrestrial network efficiently, the problem of positioning satellite gateways needs to be addressed. Therefore, we propose a technique for deploying satellite gateways that distribute traffic load.

Recently, due to the widespread of smartphones and tablet PCs, the availability of frequency band becomes a critical problem in cellular network. In order to cope with this problem, typical cellular networks usually offload some traffic to smaller size cell which have smaller coverage area than the traditional macrocell. These kinds of networks are usually referred to as heterogeneous network. Since the transmission power of the base stations of the macro cells are usually much higher than those of the smaller cell, the effectiveness of the offloading of traffic to the smaller cells is reduced. Due to the insufficient frequency availability and the ineffectiveness of heterogeneous networks, Satellite-Terrestrial Integrated mobile Communication System (STICS) has attracted much attention. However, current STICS does not have a mechanism to control whether user terminals should be associated with macrocell, smaller cells or the satellite. This may lead to the reduction of network capacity. In this paper, we propose a method for user terminals association selection by deciding if a given macrocell's base station should be turned off to maximize system capacity in STI

In the area without cellular coverage, it was made possible to share information between people by using only WiFi functionality of smartphones, which have become remarkably popular recently. By relaying data via surrounding smartphones, information can be shared between not only near people but also people in a far distance. Therefore, we can expect many future applications such as communications in emergency cases caused by disasters, delivery coupons and advertisements in shopping centers, sharing information in crowded event places, use instead of transceivers between traveling groups, and so forth. Fiber-Wireless (FiWi) networks integrate optical and wireless networks. Thus, FiWi networks have large bandwidth of optical networks and the ubiquity and mobility of wireless networks. Wireless networks provide ubiquitous and flexible communication as long as the client is within the communication range of the network, but their capacity is small. On the other hand, optical networks provide high capacity and long distance communication, but cannot provide flexible and ubiquitous communication. However, by combining these two networks, FiWi networks can leverage their advantages. FiWi networks expected to be widely deployed in the future. In this paper, we focus on Smart Fiber Wireless (SFiWi) which aims at reducing energy consumption in both fiber and wireless parts.

Satellite networks have gained much attention as a technique that provide reliable communication in an area without cellular signal. Additionally, Disruption-Tolerant Networks (DTNs) can further improve the performance of satellite networks by expanding the coverage of ground stations by using multi-hop message transfer among mobile nodes. However, conventional DTN routing schemes present a problem in terms of satellite communication load and message delivery reliability among mobile nodes. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a dynamic replication control scheme in DTNs that aims to improve the reliability of mobile nodes, which are out of ground station coverage and mitigate the satellite communication load. Furthermore, we conduct computer simulations to evaluate the performance of our proposed scheme.

At the time of disaster such as earthquakes or tsunami, the communications systems on the ground can be damaged or destroyed. Satellite networks are one of the networks that can remain available after disaster strikes. By setting up an antenna for mobile satellite communication, the users in the disaster area are able to use communication services over satellite networks. Additionally, Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) are also one of the available network at the time of disasters because it can be promptly deployed after disaster occurs. By using wireless connection of remaining mesh routers in the disaster area, disaster victims are able to use communication services through mesh routers. In this paper, we focus on satellite-terrestrial wireless mesh integrated networks that combines satellite networks and WMN. We show that system throughput is determined by the number of satellite base stations for mobile satellite communications, and we propose a method to decide the appropriate number of satellite Gate Way (GW) for mobile satellite communication to maximize throughput.

UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) has received increasing attention due to their potential to realize ubiquitous networks. UAS has been used in military purposes, such as scouting enemy field. Moreover, with their advantage of gathering data quickly, UAS has been paid much attention in civil purposes, such as communications in disaster areas where network infrastracture has been devastated by eaqrthquake and tsunami. UAS can be used to provide network service. However, there are some limitations regarding the communication distance between UAV and receivers. A UAV can not connect to the receiver wichi is outside the communication range. Therefore, in order to send the data gathered from outside the communication range to the receiver, the UAV need to move. As a result, single UAV can not gaher data in a large area in real-time. In order to solve this problem, we focus on UAS networks. In UAS networks, UAVs construct mesh network and send data by multi-hop communications. However, in such networks, network performance (e.g. delay, throughput) is varied by the number of UAVs and the trajectory of UAVs. In this research, we formulate the peformance of UAS networks. To construct high peformance UAS Network, we propose a scheme to decide the UAV Trajectory.

Recently, since improvement of wireless devices and it is common to communicate a large amount of contents, the load to communication infrastructures increases. Communication infrastructures are consisted with grand-based stations, so these infrastructures cannot be used in rural areas where it is difficult to built grand-based stations and disaster areas where grand-based station is destroyed. In this research, we focus on satellite networks because of their high ability such as disaster resistance and wide coverage. Next generation networks has to communicate a large amount data, therefore we assume the satellite networks which each satellite is equipped with a mass storage devices. By using mass storage devices, the satellite networks can handle a large amount of data. Nowadays, diverse routing methods are proposed for the satellite networks to improve effectiveness of data communication. However, there are no routing methods considering a mass storage devises, by using the routing method in existence for such kind of networks leads to inefficiently data communication. In this paper, we propose a new routing method effectively utilizing the storage devices and analyze with some mathematical expressions.

High-speed communication becomes possible among distant locations by the rapid growth of broad-band networks. A cloud storage service, which stores date in Data Centers (DCs) and provides Storage as a Service (SaaS), becomes the medium of choice in recent years. On the other hand, satellite networks have attracted much attention as a type of network that is tolerant to link disruptions caused by disaster. In order to realize a cloud storage that is tolerant to disasters, we study a novel distributed storage system integrated satellite networks. This integrated system achieves high confidentiality and robustness to distribute data by using an erasure coding. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of the erasure coding on the communication performance of the integrated storage system. Additionally, we propose a method to reduce the transmission time for the restoration of lost data in the integrated storage system with erasure coding and also verify the efficacy of the proposed method.

In P2P (peer-to-peer) networks, where nodes can freely participate in the network and depart from the network, it is necessary to realize a network robust to node departure. Hierarchical P2P networks such as Gnutella and Kazaa employ a two-tire structure by classifying nodes into higher-layer and lower-layer ones, and they can be tolerant to node from lower-layer departures because higher-layer nodes improve network connectivity. However, they are vulnerable to attacks targeting higher-layer nodes because the removal of high degree nodes dramatically degrade the network connectivity rather than the departure of low degree nodes. To cope with this issue, a bimodal degree distribution, which is tolerant to both attacks and node departures, have been studied. However, a network topology configuration following the bimodal degree distribution is not taken into account in the previous works. Therefore, in this paper, we study an optimal network topology for attacks and departures tolerance.

In recent years, Satellite-Routed Sensor Systems (SRSSs) have attracted attention as networks for disaster detection and environmental observation. Since these networks use satellites to relay the data from sensor terminals, they allow to collect data from the sensor terminals which are deployed in a remote area such as sea or mountain. To use these networks for disaster detection and environmental monitoring, it is needed to collect data from many sensor terminals which deployed wide area in real time. Thus, the efhciant way to allocate satellite bandwidth to each sensor terminal is necessary. Therefore, in this paper, we discuss an appropriate bandwidth allocation model while considering the real-time performance. In the new model, we particularly focus on the relationship between throughput of each sensor terminals and real-time performance, and introduce a method to allocate band widths.

Recently, it is desired to achieve communications in areas which do not have enough base stations, such as disaster areas or depopulated areas. Satellite networks and Delay- and Disruption-Tolerant Networks (DTN) command attention as technologies being able to provide reliable communications in those areas. Hence, in this paper, we focus on combined networks of satellite networks and DTN. In this combined networks, communications between source nodes and base stations are achieved with DTN, while communications from base station to destination nodes are attained by satellite networks. Generally, link disruptions with the movement of nodes often occur, and this disadvantage governs reliability of combined networks. In order to resolve this problem, we pay attention to Binary Spray and Wait (BSW), which is one of the routing schemes in DTN. BSW can provide high delivery ratio by replicating messages, and control resource consumption by limiting the number of replicated messages. However, despite the fact that limited numbers are different depending on the relationship of between source nodes and base stations in BSW, the limited number is identically set for all users. In this paper, therefore, we propose a new routing scheme based on BSW, which changes the limited number of replicated messages according to the distance from a source node to its nearest base station. Moreover, with computing simulation, we realized experiments to evaluate the performance of our proposed routing scheme.

Recently, it is drew attention to communicate in disaster areas with being taking more interest in natural disasters. In disaster areas, it is difficult for users to transfer messages because many base stations may stop working from damages or power shortages. It is known to be tolerant to disasters that Delay- and Disruption-Tolerant Networks (DTN) and Satellite Networks. DTN can provide the communication regardless to base stations, and Satellite Networks achieve the telecommunication due to relay between base stations. To make use of both remarkable points, we focus on the combination of DTN and Satellite Networks. In this combined network, link disruptions due users to move in territorial network affected the end-to-end communications greatly. In this paper, we take particular note of DTN routing schemes which achieve message transfers from source nodes to base stations. Finally, we compare the performances, especially fairness of delivery ratio, of each DTN routing with computing simulation.

Due to the increase in contents volume and network participants, the electric consumption of access networks, such as Passive Optical Network (PON) is rising steadily. Because Optical Network Unit (ONU) consumes more than 60 percents of the total energy amount of PON, cutting off the ONU's consumption is important. Therefore, attention is being paid on the sleep mode that periodically suspends some mechanisms on ONU and reduces energy consumption. During ONU sleep mode, though there is a decrease in power consumption, there is occurence of delay in the transmission of data frame. Therefore there is a trade-off relation between power consumption and throughput. However it is not obvious to evaluate the effect of the sleep period length on the transmission delay and on TCP throughput. In this report, we perform the modeling on ONU sleep mechanism and its effect on TCP communications in PON through numerical analysis.

Satellite networks have received increasing attention as a means to provide a next generarion network able to realize an Ubiquitous Network. Due to their wide coverage and their resistance to disasters, satellite networks have recently become highly expected in time of natural disaster. However satellite covering disaster area face a problem of congestion due to the numerous traffic. It is therefore necessary to make a distribution of load among satellites. In order to perform load distribution among satellites, we focus on the multi-layered Satellite Network that are constructed by layering Non-Geo Sationnary satellite networks. In these multi-layered satellite networks, various traffic path are used as detour path, and therefore the distribution of load among satellites is made possible. In this paper, we propose a routing control method which realizes a sufficient distribution of load among satellites in a multi-layered satellite network. Finally, we evaluate the performance of our proposed method through simulation.

In recent years, public wireless LAN service for trains has advanced significantly in Japan. Contemporary approaches to provide Internet connection to trains have used WiFi technology. To facilitate wide area Internet connectivity satellite communication has received significant attention. However, satellite communication suffers from frequent signal cutoffs due to the existence of obstacles. To solve this issue, a combination of layer-3 diversity with gap filer has been proposed. Layer-3 diversity is a method by which the same packet is received by multiple inputs and the most appropriate packet is selected. In layer-3 diversity, packet-matching processing is required and this processing is performed with a dedicated device called a layer-3 diversity switch. This processing may result in a bottleneck for high bandwidth communications. This paper focuses on the packet list structure that this dedicated device holds, and we propose a method to reduce the packet-matching processing time by decentralized administration of the packet list structure. Experimental results show the advantages our proposed method.

In recent years, the advances in high-speed wireless communications, along with miniaturization and the reduction in price of mobile devices, have facilitated the move towards wireless Internet access. Consequently, the number of domestic public wireless LAN service subscribers have grown 1.5 times in the last four years span, starting from the end of 2006 to the end of 2010 Additionally, providing Internet service in moving vehicles such as trains is crucial. However, traditional public wireless LAN services can not provide sufficient bandwidth in such scenarios. Hence, satellite communications shows promise as solution to provide sufficient bandwidth in trains. To satellite communications for the trains, signal cutoff is an especially important issue. As a countermeasure, match-up to layer-3 diversity along with gap filer is employed. layer-3 diversity is a method by which the same packet is received by multiple antennas and selects the optimum packet. This paper focuses on the Layer-3 diversity technology, and the transfer processing of the IP packet executed by Layer-3 diversity that examines the possibility of the formation of bottlenecks in Wide-Bandcommunication. And, we proposes the method for solving it.

Recently, Non-Geostationary (NGEO) satellite networks have attracted attention as a network able to realize a ubiquitous wireless environment. They provide many advantages such as, extensive coverage, disaster-resistants, and efficient power consumption. Furthermore, in these days, Multi-layered Satellite Networks gained much research attention in this field. They achieve an increase of network capacity and bypass traffic efficiently, while keeping the advantages of each layer. However, they suffer from high delay. In this paper, we focus on constellation design of two-layered networks, especially on the satellite altitude to minimize packet delivery delay of the network. we consider the relationship between the delay and the satellite altitude through computer simulations. Finally, we analyze this relationship, and discuss a method to decide the optimal satellite altitudes to minimize packet delivery delay.

Multi-layered satellite networks, which integrate multiple satellite constellations having different orbits, have attracted much attention as a promising next generation satellite network for facilitating ubiquitous communications. In this paper, we focus on double-layered satellite networks integrating Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites network systems. Previously, we proposed an efficient routing scheme, which properly distributes traffic between these two layers. However, the characterization of packet losses and delays was not addressed in that work. Since this is an important aspect in verifying the effectiveness of our recently proposed routing scheme, in this paper, we evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme in terms of packet losses and delays in detail. In addition, we describe further improvements of the proposed scheme.

With the development of satellite network technology, satellite networks have become widely utilized for many communication applications, thus, the reliability of the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) has become ever more essential. However, it is commonly known that the performance of TCP will significantly decreases in wireless networks that have long transmission delay, such as satellite networks. Even though some improvements in TCP have already addressed these problems in previous works, we focus on the Variable-structure congestion Control Protocol (VCP) which is designed for High Bandwidth Delay Product (BDP) networks. VCP allows the sender to control the congestion window efficiently by using Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) which conveys congestion information that originates from the routers. However, the performance of VCP degrades in wireless networks because of the inefficient retransmission control. In this paper, we propose two methods that improve retransmission control. The first method is based on the use of ECN ,while the other utilizes Round Trip Time (RTT), to estimate network condition. Finally, we also evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes by the use of computer simulation.

Non-Geostationary (NGEO) satellite networks provide many advantages in terms of extensive coverage, efficient power consumption, and instantaneous access. Because of these benefits, NGEO satellite networks have received increasing attention as a means to provide a next generation, high-speed wireless network that is globally available. The latest research in this field has been focused on increasing the efficiency of wireless communications. Multi-Layered Satellite Networks are constructed as multiple layers of NGEO satellite networks. With the efficient management of each layer's network resources, degradation in the quality of service can be reduced and the network capacity can be increased. In order to achieve these benefits, it is necessary to control the amount of traffic in each network layer. In this paper, we propose a routing control method which distributes each layer's traffic appropriately within the two-layered satellite network. We evaluate the performance of our proposed method through simulation.

Topology control is considered as an efficient method to decrease the interference and energy consumption in ad-hoc networks. Among the localized algorithms for topology control, Local Tree-based Reliable Topology (LTRT) has been proposed as an approach that satisfies the requirements of both energy saving and reliability. However, until now, only static networks have taken advantage of this algorithm, and thus, an experiment that adopts LTRT to mobile networks is becoming necessary. In this paper, we measure the effects of mobility on the connectivity of networks whose topology is constructed by LTRT and other well-known algorithms. The results show that topology produced by LTRT is sensitive to mobility, but in terms of connectivity, LTRT shows superiority to the other algorithms.

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), nodes, equipped with sensors and wireless communication devices, are scattered and they build autonomous-decentralized networks. We can collect sensed data of these nodes from the networks. Since nodes are battery-driven devices, the restraint of power consumption is a main concern in WSNs. As an approach, WSNs with mobile sinks are now attracting much attention. A mobile sink (e.g. robots) travels around a network and collects data of the neighboring sensor nodes, and thus, it can prolong network lifetime by power-saving communication with each node. A WSN is divided into multiple clusters, which a mobile sink visits one-by-one. Therefore, a clustering algorithm which optimizes the entire power consumption is important. In this paper, we study a clustering algorithm which takes into account the connectivity between each node.

Due to the lack of available frequency spectrum, cognitive radio technologies have recently attracted attention because of their potential to achieve high efficient utilization of wireless bandwidth resources. Cognitive radio technologies promote the secondary utilization of spectrum bands when not in use by a primary system. In such cognitive radio technologies, spectrum management is an essential issue. We focus on Hardware-Constrained cognitive MAC(HC-MAC)which is an applicable in ad hoc environment. In this paper, we treat satellite networks as a primary system. We propose a distributed access control scheme which for cognitive radio users on the ground, using the same frequency bands as satellite networks.

Satellite network and mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are expected to evolve as new communication methods due to the fact that they do not depend on fixed infrastructures. In this paper, we propose a scheme which combines ad hoc networks with satellite networks. In particular, we focus on the connection environment between the ground mobile nodes and the satellites. Our purpose is to utilize the bandwidths of the satellites more efficiently using ad hoc networks. We mainly deal with the situation whereby ground users are unable to use their respective bandwidths to the satellite because of the limitation pertaining to the excessive number of simultaneous connections with the satellite.

Mobile Ad Hoc NETworks (MANETs), in which nodes can freely join and move, need an abillity to protect itself against attacks launched from malicious nodes. Within the node certificate system, the most effective technique for protecting the MANETs is the prompt revocation of malicious nodes. One way of the revocation certification of identified attackers is to collect the information about the attackers from multiple nodes and remove their certification based on the collected information. However, it is difficult to determine whether the collected information is reliable or not. In this paper, we propose a certificate revocation scheme which can achieve high performance even in the situation with unreliable information by classifying and clustering nodes based on their reliability. We also evaluate the performance of the proposed method by using network simulator.

While satellite network and Mobile Ad hoc NETwork (MANET) are completely different networks, the integration between these networks has large potential to provide Internet access anywhere on the earth. However, an obvious issue exists in such hybrid satellite/MANET networks. The performance of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), de-fact standard protocol in Internet, can be largely degraded in such hybrid environments due to long propagation delay, frequent connection breaks, and wireless link errors. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of TCP over hybrid networks, mainly from the point of view of throughput.

The emerging P2P (Peer to Peer) model has become more powerful and attractive as a network model for sharing of the Internet resources and streaming media contents than the conventional client/server model due to its scalability and distributed feature. While P2P network is tolerant to failures, it is vulnerable to attacks enomously. That is because that the P2P network has scalefree distribution. In this paper, we propose a bimodal P2P network, which follows bimodal degree distribution. The proposed method achieves high tolerance to both attacks and failures through the simulation.

While Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is the most famous transport protocol in terrestrial networks, its performance is not enough in wireless networks with long delay, e.g., satellite networks. Though some improvements of TCP and new transport protocols have been proposed, we focus on Variable-structure congestion Control Protocol (VCP) designed for high Bandwidth Delay Product (BDP) networks. In VCP, Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) is used to generate the feedback signal from routers to sources in order to notify the utilization ratio of a bottleneck link. VCP controls its congestion window according to the network traffic conditions. Thus, VCP is able to achieve high link utilization even in high BDP networks. However, there are two major issues in VCP. One is the lower rate of increase in congestion window than the slow start in TCP. The other is the throughput degradation in lossy wireless environments especially those with long transmission delay. In this paper, to cope with these issues, we propose a VCP improvement which quickly increases its congestion window in start-up and maintains high throughput in wireless environments. We also evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme by computer simulation.

In wireless sensor networks, maximizing the lifetime of the networks is a fundamental problem because of the limited electric power of the battery embedded on sensor nodes. To extend a network lifetime, it is necessary to study power consumption for data transmission in each sensor node. As a routing algorithm has a large affect on the energy consumption in each node, many power-aware routing algorithms have been proposed. However, almost all algorithms have not taken the effect of hotspot problem into account. Hotspot problem is the issue that sensor nodes around a sink node rapidly consume their battery due to heavy traffic from other outside nodes, which causes the isolation of the sensor network and prevents the sink node from gathering data from the sensor nodes. In this paper, we focus on the hotspot problem in wireless sensor networks and propose a routing algorithm to extend the network lifetime.

Along with rapid growth of broadband access networks, it has become possible to transfer a large files such as music, high-quality images, and videos on the Internet. TCP/IP is widely used for data transmission in the Internet because it provides highly reliable communication. However, TCP results in drastically unfair bandwidth allocations among competing flows and causes heavy network congestion when multiple connections share the bandwidth of a bottleneck link. In this regard, this paper addresses the efficiency and fairness issues of TCP. The efficiency of TCP is controlled by matching the aggregate traffic rate of all flows to the sum of the network capacity. On the other hand, its unfairness issue is mitigated by allocating portions of bandwidth proportional to flow's RTTs. In addition, a priority control mechanism is also introduced to the proposed scheme.

In this research, we have studied the power saving technique for next generation wireless access networks. In the next generation wireless access networks, the power consumption in both wireless and wired parts increases due to high traffic load generated by the large number of communication terminals and the wide variety of communication demands. To cope with this issue, we have proposed the power saving techniques in both parts, respectively, and succeeded in reducing the power consumption in the entire system.

In D2D communications, grouping technology affects the communication performance. In this research, we have proposed the grouping technique based on two different communication modes. This technique is designed to shorten the group formation process and to avoid unnecessary group bonding. Through computer simulations, we have successfully demonstrated the advanced performance of the proposed technique compared with the traditional existing technology.

In this research, we focus on the combination of the Passive Optical Networks (PONs), which can transfer data with high speed and high capacity, and the wireless networks, which provide flexible access to users. In this combined network, an advanced traffic control method utilizing the connectivity of the two types of networks is required. However, in the combination of PONs and the Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), high energy consumption and inefficient communication are the main concerns. In order to solve these problems, we proposed the novel synchronized method of which the performance was validated by using mathematical analysis.

Next generation network is an aggregation of heterogeneous networks integrated by using Internet Protocol (IP). To deploy various kinds of network services over such IP-based networks, developing new transport protocols which outperform the de-facto standard protocol, i. e., Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), is essential. In this research, advanced technologies to enhance the functionality of transport layer are invented, which allows us achieving highly efficient communication and ensure quality of services even in heterogeneous network environments.
