    Andosols are characterized by high organic matter content and play a significant role in carbon storage. However, they have low phosphorus fertility because of the high phosphate-fixing capacity of active aluminum. For agricultural use of Andosols, it is necessary to ameliorate its poor phosphorus fertility by applying lime and high doses of phosphate fertilizers. The objective of the present study was to clarify how such soil amendments affect the mineralization of soil organic carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in allophanic Andosols under different temperature regimes. The soil was treated using combinations of liming and heavy phosphate application, followed by incubation under different temperature conditions. The N mineralization and the soil CO2 evolution rate were measured periodically. The patterns of N mineralization were analyzed by fitting them to first-order kinetics. Liming increased C and N mineralization irrespective of temperature, and the increase was further enhanced by phosphate application. Kinetic analysis of the N mineralization curve indicated lowering of the activation energy of N mineralization reactions with phosphate application, suggesting that P application may accelerate N mineralization at lower temperatures. These findings provide a basis for developing soil management strategies to reduce the loss of soil organic matter.

    The objective of the present study was to explore the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi adapted to soil rich in available phosphate. (1) An inoculation experiment with the AM fungus Glomus sp. R-10 (R-10) on Welsh onion was conducted over 2 years under field conditions. Welsh onion was pre-inoculated during a nursery period and transplanted to a field rich in available phosphate. Growth, yield, and AM colonization of the inoculated Welsh onion were compared with those of non-inoculated Welsh onion. To examine the indigenous AM fungi, DNA was extracted from the roots of non-inoculated Welsh onion, and rRNA genes of AM fungi were amplified and analyzed. (2) AM fungi were isolated from an area adjacent to the experimental field and identified based upon spore morphology and partial rRNA gene sequences. (3) Effects of the isolated AM fungus on Welsh onion were examined in comparison with those of R-10 by an in-pot experiment in a growth cabinet. The results were as follows: (1) the growth and yield of the plants inoculated with R-10 were not significantly different from those of non-inoculated ones. Although the phosphate availability in the soil was very high, indigenous AM fungi colonized the roots in the non-inoculated plants. Sequences of Gigaspora margarita and Claroideoglomus etunicatum were detected. (2) An isolated AM fungus was identified as C. etunicatum. (3) The isolated C. etunicatum increased the growth of Welsh onion to a greater extent than did R-10 and also showed a high colonization rate under high phosphate conditions. Thus, the ability of the indigenous AM isolate to colonize Welsh onion plants under high-phosphate conditions of soil was confirmed, suggesting the presence of AM fungi adapted to soil rich in phosphate. The isolated C. etunicatum was effective even in soils rich in available phosphate.

    Objective. It is necessary to recycle the waste from fish processing and to evaluate its environmental impact in order to improve the sustainable marine products industry. Thus, we evaluated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, one of the environmental impacts, of recycling the waste from fish processing from the composting to the end-use steps. We evaluated the process of conventional composting, the production of fish-meal fertilizer, disposal and acidulocomposting that is a novel eco-friendly composting system.<BR>Results and Discussion. In our evaluations, it was determined that the acidulocomposting process needs larger amounts of energy for heating the fermentation system than normal composting. The amount of energy required in acidulocomposting is almost same as that required in the manufacture of fish-meal fertilizer. The ammonia volatilization and CO2 emission in the acidolocomposting process are much lower than those in conventional composting. The proportion of GHG emissions from transportation and spraying to the recycling processes were low in all cases. The acidulocompost has much higher nitrogen content than the conventional compost because of low ammonia volatilization. Therefore, it can be used across larger areas than conventional compost from an equivalent amount of waste from fish processing. In addition, the GHG emission from the case of disposal is the largest, compared to the rest.<BR>Conclusions. Acidulocomposting needs large amounts of energy for heating the fermentation system but has low GHG emissions from composting. Moreover, acidulocompost has large nitrogen content. Acidulocomposting may be suitable for recycling the waste from the sustainable marine products industry.

    The understanding of the relationship between root nodule distribution and root architecture and between nitrogen-fixing activity and size of individual root nodules is required for effective utilization of symbiotic nitrogen fixation in leguminous plants. We studied these relationships in peanut. The nitrogen-fixing activity of root nodules was examined with reference to their size in peanut. The nitrogen-fixing activities of individual root nodules are closely related with the size of nodule, and thus classification of root nodules by size is rapid and useful method to evaluate nitrogen-fixing activities. The formation of root nodules was investigated in the field. Many root nodules in peanut are formed at positions on 1st-order lateral roots where 2nd-order lateral roots emerge. The two leading cultivars, Chibahandachi and Nakateyutaka, in Japan were studied in detail. Chibahandachi had fewer, but larger nodules whereas Nakateyutaka had more, but smaller nodules. Nakateyutaka formed more new nodules on the lateral branched from the middle and apical parts of the taproot than Chibahandachi. These facts suggest that root nodules in Chibahandachi may grow for a longer period with plant growth, and that Nakateyutaka may form new nodules at even late stages of plant growth. In addition, the nodule distribution was changed by cutting the root tip of taproot in peanut, suggesting the possibility that the nitrogen-fixing activity can be controlled by the designing of root architecture.

    Soybean depends their nitrogen nutrition on biological nitrogen fixation of root nodules, for which much phosphorus is required. However, phosphorus is concerned about its resource depletion. In terms of resource scarcity of phosphorus, we explore a possible less-phosphorus cultivation of soybean by using non-nodulating line of soybean. In a soil with low phosphorus fertility, when much nitrogen fertilizer was supplied, yield of non-nodulating soybean was comparable with that of normal nodulating cultivar of soybean. Environmental impact analysis of these cultivation process showed that the environmental impacts (global warming, eutrophication, resource scarcity) in non-nodulating soybean cultivation was comparable or rather smaller than those in nodulating soybean cultivation. These suggests it may be possible to cultivate soybean with less environmental loads using non-nodulating line of soybean.

    Now, we need to improve the yield of crops grown in low-fertility soils with little use of fertilizer. Root system is an important role in this improvement and the concept of root phenomics that measure and analyze root system as a set of expressed root phenotypes is crucial. In this study, we developed a suite of high-throughput imaging tools that can easily get timelapse root images during the growth season and evaluate root traits with image analyses. Using the proposed system with growing the chromosome segment substitution lines of Sasanishiki / Habataki in rice, we found the quantitative trait loci on chromosome 5 and 10 in relation to growth angle and crown root length, respectively. The developed system has great contribution to accelerate progress in root phenomics.

    The effects of water quality in the Tuul River in Mongolia on the genetic diversity of fish and animal health were investigated. The water in the Tuul River was more polluted downstream. In 2014, very high numbers of Escherichia coli were detected in well water. Pathogenic E. coli was detected in animal feces. Sheep and goats had high carriage rates. Cryptosporidium was detected in cattle feces and river water. In 2015, the numbers of E coli in well water decreased after changing the well structure. Sheep that drank water downstream had a higher rate of pathogenic E. coli infection. The genetic diversity of fish was similar to that of fish in Lake Baikal. Satellite image analysis showed that vegetation was better farther from roads. The regulation of well construction and the use of pastures may make the pasturing environment sustainable.

    The rainfed lowland is a major rice ecosystem in Thailand. In northeast Thailand, especially, rice plant experiences anaerobic, aerobic and drought conditions alternately during the life cycle and moreover soil capacity of nutrient supplies and retention is very low due to sandy soil. Therefore, rice yield is seriously reduced. Our objectives were to clarify the nutrient dynamics in soil and rice plants and to improve rice yield with improvement of nutrient absorption. As a result, phosphorus content in soil was not high and the deficiency was occurred. But, phosphorus fertilizer did not effective, because phosphorus is hardly moving in soil, and root growth was strongly reduced by anaerobic-aerobic transition, and the favorable nitrogen had to be accompanied. We could find out some lines showing relatively good growth under this rainfed condition. They are assumed to have the capacity to absorb phosphate effectively. It is necessary to be analyzed to improve rice productivity.

    Toward the use of organic matter as an alternative to chemical fertilizers which have recently increased in price, we investigated the root production and mortality of paddy rice using organic matter and crop production and carbon sequestration in relation to the dynamics. In the results, the production and mortality of root of rice using organic fertilizer were more than using chemical fertilizer. Using RothC models with our data, the evaluation of soil carbon sequestration was changed depending on these differences in roots. Our results suggests the effects of root dynamics is greater than the previous evaluations.

    Application of poly-silicate iron (PSI) sludge derived from water purification plants, unused waste, improved rice yields and brown rice quality, and decreased pecky rice damage caused by rice-feeding bugs in the organic rice farming system. PSI sludge and silicate application were effective in increasing rice root elongation and activity. PSI sludge showed the potential of decreasing methane emission in the organic-applied paddy soils. Application of PSI sludge and silicate fertilizer can contribute to establish the technology of environment-friendly paddy agriculture.
