  1. Heart rate-related physiological changes induced by classical music-elicited emotions do not underlie alterations in healthy adults' ankle joint target-matching strategy. International-journal Peer-reviewed

Emotions have the potential to modulate human voluntary movement by modifying muscle afferent discharge which in turn may affect kinesthetic acuity. We examined if heart rate (HR)-related physiological changes induced by music-elicited emotions would underlie alterations in healthy young adults' ankle joint target-matching strategy quantified by joint position sense (JPS). Participants (n = 40, 19 females, age = 25.9 ± 2.9 years) performed ipsilateral-, and contralateral ankle target-matching tasks with their dominant and non-dominant foot using a custom-made foot platform while listening to classical music pieces deemed to evoke happy, sad, or neutral emotions (each n = 10). Participants in the 4th group received no music during the task. Absolute (ABS), constant (CONST), and variable (VAR) target-matching errors and HR-related data were analyzed. Participants performed the contralateral target-matching task with smaller JPS errors when listening to sad vs. happy music (ABS: p < 0.001, d = 1.6; VAR: p = 0.010, d = 1.2) or neutral (ABS: p < 0.001, d = 1.6; VAR: p < 0.001, d = 1.4) music. The ABS (d = 0.8) and VAR (d = 0.3) JPS errors were lower when participants performed the task with their dominant vs. non-dominant foot. JPS errors were also smaller during the ipsilateral target-matching task when participants (1) listened to sad vs. neutral (ABS: p = 0.007, d = 1.2) music, and (2) performed the target-matching with their dominant vs. non-dominant foot (p < 0.001, d = 0.4). Although emotions also induced changes in some HR-related data during the matching conditions, i.e., participants who listened to happy music had lower HR-related values when matching with their non-dominant vs. dominant foot, these changes did not correlate with JPS errors (all p > 0.05). Overall, our results suggest that music-induced emotions have the potential to affect target-matching strategy and HR-related metrics but the changes in HR-metrics do not underlie the alteration of ankle joint target-matching strategy in response to classical music-elicited emotions.

BACKGROUND: Prostate Cancer screening based on manual palpation is subjective. Robotic palpation systems can objectively acquire stiffness conditions of the prostate. METHODS: A 2DoF cable driven robotic system for prostate palpation is proposed. An indirect method to estimate the contact force based on cable tension observation is presented. Kinematic models and a joint angle estimation method to determine the tip position of the probe are derived. Positioning accuracy was verified using an optical marker tracking system and by displacement measurement, respectively. The contact force estimation method was validated on silicone phantom samples. RESULTS: A good consistence between the estimated and measured contact force was observed. The contact force was correlated with the elastic modulus of each silicone phantom. There was also a good agreement between the theoretical and the measured tip position. CONCLUSION: In the proposed palpation system, the indirect contact force estimation method is viable and holds potential for the stiffness assessment of the prostate. The tip position vital for palpation can be determined through estimated joint angles.

Palpation is a clinical diagnosis method utilized by physicians to acquire valuable information about the pathological condition of an organ using the sense of touch. This method, however, is subjective. The accuracy depends on the physician's experience and skill. Therefore, to make palpation objective and minimize variability in prostate cancer diagnosis among physicians, an automated palpation system is required. This paper describes the design and experimental evaluation of a 2 Degrees of Freedom (2DoF) tendon driven robotic palpation probe. The probe's palpation motion is controlled by actuating driving tendons using a cable-differential pulley transmission system and a return spring. A kinematic model of the robotic probe was derived. Furthermore, a tendon path length model was geometrically determined, and an optimization method for guide arc center placement to minimize change in tendon length was presented. Preliminary experimental and theoretical results were compared to determine the positioning accuracy. The difference between theoretical pitch angles [0°,80°] and measured values for the yaw angle range of [0°, 40°] was found to be in the range of 0.03° ~ 5.06°.Clinical Relevance- Diagnosis based on manual palpation is often subjective and palpation sensitivity depends on the physician's level of experience and skill. Therefore, an objective method for acquiring tactile information is relevant. Robotic palpation system provides objective and quantitative information for better understanding of the pathological and physiological changes in the tissue using mechanical properties as biomarkers.

In this study, we focus on the tactile illusion of stiffness feeling by surface roughness. Human factors on tactile illusion is analyzed from the viewpoint of the fingertip stiffness and finger motion. Specifically, five types of samples with different surface roughness are fabricated. Sensory evaluations for the stiffness feeling and the roughness feeling are conducted. Also, the fingertip stiffness and fingertip force when the panelists touch the samples are measured. As a result, it is confirmed that tactile illusion on stiffness due to surface roughness occurs to some panelists. And it is shown that the tactile illusion is less likely to occur in panelists with hard fingertips. Moreover, the panelists with tactile illusion are classified into two groups based on the relationship between the surface roughness and the stiffness feeling. And it is suggested that each group has characteristics in the relationship between the touch motion and fingertip stiffness.

<p>We focus on the hardness measurement by using a sensor unit arranging 8 piezoelectric elements in series. In previous study, it confirmed that the sensor unit is available to evaluate roughness on the sample. In the study, four silicone samples with different Young's modulus were prepared. In experiments, the sensor unit was placed on the sample and moved up and down with 1Hz. And the oscillatory waveform form each piezoelectric element was obtained. In analysis, the first peak voltage in the waveform were extracted and compared with the Young's modulus of the sample. From the results, it was found that the peak voltage related on Young's modulus. It was suggested that the sensor unit is available to evaluate the hardness of objects.</p>

In this paper, palpation motions for prostate gland were measured using a prostate examination simulator and motion capture system in order to clarify effective motions for accurate diagnosis. It is difficult for students to learn how to make a palpation motion and what information to obtain during palpation. Quantitative evaluation of palpation motion is demanded. Firstly, the prostate examination simulator was developed and six kinds of prostate models, including a healthy model, a cancer model, and a hypertrophy model, were prepared as palpation samples. Next, by using these measurement system, prostate palpation motions by a expert and five students were measured. While participants diagnose the presence of lumps in prostate models and the size of prostate, fingertip position and force applying on prostate models were measured. From the results, it was confirmed that the expert diagnosed the state of prostate glands more accurately. Then motion analyses for trajectory of fingertip, contact force, and finger posture were carried out and motion characteristics between the expert and students were compared. From these results about both of trajectory and contact force, and it was found that the expert commonly explored over the whole of models by relative larger contact force than students do, it was suggested that the expert simultaneously explores presence of lumps and the shape of prostate. And from the results of analysis on finger posture, it was found that palpating the entire prostate with the fingertip is effective. As a results, the motion characteristics of the expert were extracted by using the developed system.

Itch is an unpleasant sensation associated with various disease, and can trigger scratching. Management of itch and scratching is important for treatment of disease. Therefore, quantitative and objective evaluation of itch and scratching is demanded. This work aims to develop the sensor system for evaluating the scratching motion. For the purpose, we focus on scratch sounds induced by scratching motion and, propose a nail mounted sensor system . In the sensor system a small microphone is attached on a nail for measuring scratching sounds. First, for investigating the relationship between the scratch sounds and the mechanical characteristics of human scratch motion, the artificial skin model made of polyurethane was used as a scratched object. The measurement system that can measure force and a motion of fingertip during scratching was constructed. Using the measurement system, various kinds of human scratch motions and sounds were measured. By signal processing of the scratch sounds, the several sound features were calculated and characteristics of scratch motions were extracted. Then, correlation coefficients between sound features and scratch motion properties were calculated. From the results, two pairs of the parameters were found as the most adequate parameter pair to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of human scratch motion. And using these parameters, "scratch evaluation map" was proposed as a method to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of human scratch motion. From the results, it was found that the developed sensor system has possibility to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of human scratch motion by the scratch sounds.

This paper describes the development of a haptic sensor using a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film, which is a kind of piezoelectric materials. Output characteristic of PVDF film is similar to one of pacinian corpuscles in human skin. In experiment, smoothness and softness of skin model were measured using the sensor system. After that, the results were compared with physical properties of the objects.

This paper describes a development of a polymer sensor using a solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) film. The sensor has a basic structure that a SPE film is sandwiched between thin carbon films and conductive tape is attached on each carbon film. The SPE film has a good flexibility and can be used in air. First output response to deformation is investigated by applying the displacement. Then a curvature sensor using the material is proposed. In experiments, it is found that the proposed sensor is available to measure curvature directly without complex calculations.

Severe dysfunction of muscle tissues can be treated by transplantation but the success rate is still not high enough. One possibility instead is to replace the dysfunctional muscle with artificial muscles. This article introduces a unique approach using shape memory alloys (SMAs) to replace the anal sphincter muscle for solving the problem of fecal incontinence. The use of SMAs that exhibit a two-way shape memory effect allows the device to function like a sphincter muscle and facilitates simple design. In this article, we will give a brief introduction to the functional material-SMA-together with its medical applications, and will follow this with a description of the recent progress in research and development of an SMA-based artificial sphincter. The possibility of its commercialization will also be discussed.

In this paper, a palpation sensor system to detect lumps in soft palpation objects such as breast cancer is developed. During scanning of the developed sensor on the measuring objects, the reaction force applied to the contact part is measured by a load cell. And the lump is detected by find a peak waveform of the reaction force. Measuring objects embedding a lump with several conditions of depth and diameter are prepared. Palpation experiments for the measuring objects are conducted. And from the results, it was found the lump of 6mm in diameter embedded in 15mm in depth can be detected with the developed palpation sensor system. In addition, by investigation of relationships between the pressing depth of the sensor to measuring objects and the depth of the detected lump, it was suggested that the depth of lump can be estimated from the combination of results for different pressing depth conditions.

In this study, a single joint robot finger system to palpate the prostate is developed. For the palpation, the robot finger is bended by pulling the driving wires. And estimation of the robot fingertip position from the length of the driving wires and estimation of the contact force between fingertip and measuring objects are necessary. First, the theoretical model of the robot finger geometrically was constructed, and the relationship between the bending shape and the coordinates of the fingertip was derived. Also, a method to estimate the contact force between the fingertip and the object using the principle of virtual work from the tension of the driving wires was derived. Next, the robot fingertip position accuracy was confirmed by conducting position measurement experiment. Finally, a palpation experiment was conducted on the gel samples, and the utility of this system was confirmed by estimating the contact force.

In this paper, method to estimate fingertip force with ring-type wearable sensor is proposed. To select effective exercises, it is important to accurately measure motion of patient, such as postures and force. Especially, fingers perform complicated movements, loss of function significantly adverse effects on active of living. Measurement of fingertip force is relatively difficult, because it is necessary to use load cells in the target object or between finger and object. Therefore, in previous study, we focused on the relationship between tension of tendon and fingertip force, and proposed ring-type wearable sensor to estimate the fingertip force. First, we investigate the relationship between finger joint angle and sensor output at the condition that the fingertip force is zero. Next, the relationship at the condition that fingertip force is applied is investigated too. Finally, on the basis of above investigations, the relational expression between the joint angle, the ring-type sensor output, and the fingertip force was derived as new calibration formula for estimating fingertip force.

Human beings gain a lot of sense by using haptic perception. Especially, the sense of hardness is important for physician to palpate patients&amp;rsquo; bodies. However, it is difficult to share the sense of hardness. Therefore haptic hardness sensor systems are demanded. For the development of the haptic sensor system, it is necessary to elucidate the mechanism of human perception about the sense of hardness. In previous studies, it has been clarified that not only physical property about objects such as young&amp;rsquo;s modulus but also contact state such as contact area affects the sense of hardness. Therefore, this study aims to measure contact state of finger-tip during evaluating hardness for flexible objects. For this purpose, measurement system using Optical Coherence Tomography was developed. And contact area and three-dimensional contact shape during evaluating hardness for flexible objects were measured.

The accidental swallowing caused by decline of the ability to swallow due to aging is a severe problem for elder people. Therefore, effective methods of monitoring swallowing action and estimating swallowing function are required. In this paper, a piezoelectric film sensor is developed to estimate the swallowing function. To investigate the relationship between swallowing action and sensor output behavior, pharynx movement is measured by using the piezoelectric film sensor and three-dimensional motion analysis system. In experiments, we measured the swallowing action during repetitive saliva swallowing test that is a major screening test for dysphagia by using the developed sensor system. As a result, it is found that number of swallowing can be evaluated by using the standard deviation of the developed sensor output.

Palpation is a diagnosis method that physicians get information about organ by using touch sensation. However, palpation is a subjective method, and accuracy of diagnosis depends on physician&#039;s experience and skill. Therefore, in order to make palpation objective and more accurate, a palpation sensor system has been required. In previous study, we proposed an artificial soft finger system to palpate a prostate gland. The artificial finger was composed of a silicone cylinder, wires, and two motors. Two wires are connected with motors through the silicone cylinder. And the artificial finger turns in various directions according to length of wires. And we obtained a relation formula for estimating the fingertip position from the length of wires. In this paper, we proposed an estimation method of hardness by using the artificial finger system. And to realize the method, mechanical characteristics of the finger part was obtained by experiments.

In this paper, influence of surface roughness on feeling of stiffness is investigated in term of touch motion. Five silicone samples, each of which has different surface roughness and the same hardness, were fabricated. Sensory evaluation on feeling of stiffness for the samples was conducted. In sensory evaluations, panelists evaluated stiffness of samples according to two kinds of instruction. One is that panelists evaluated the samples freely. The other is that panelists evaluated them with feeling the surface roughness. From the results of sensory evaluation, it was found that surface roughness obviously affected feeling of stiffness in the case of instruction that panelists evaluated them with feeling the surface roughness. During sensory evaluation, fingertip trajectories and contact force to the samples were measured. As a result, it was found that touch motions differ depending on the instructions for sensory evaluation.

In recent years, the information terminal using a touch panel has become widespread. Touch panel is a device that people touches directly. Therefore, touch feeling of touch panels is important. However, methods for evaluating touch feeling of touch panel surfaces have not been established. In this study, an objective evaluation method for touch feeling of touch panel surface is established based on the tactile sensor system developed in previous studies. Firstly, the sensory evaluations for touch panel samples with different surface treatments were conducted. Next, touch panel surfaces were measured by using tactile sensor system, and evaluation parameters by using sensor output were calculated in order to evaluate touch feeling. Finally, the evaluation parameters were compared with the results of sensory evaluation. As a result, it was confirmed that the tactile sensory system is useful to evaluate the touch feeling of touch panel surface objectively.

In order to perform the rehabilitation of a finger effectively, it is important to measure finger force of patients without inhibiting the grip sensation and to give appropriate advice using the force data. Therefore, in previous study, we focused on the relationship between the tension of tendon and finger force, and proposed a ring type sensor that can estimate the finger force from tension of tendon. In this study, the influence of the finger postures on the ring type sensor output is investigated. First, relationship between the finger joint angle and the ring type finger force sensor output is investigated by using a wearable sensor integrated with finger joint angle sensor. From the results, a compensation method of the finger force using finger joint angle sensor output is constructed. In addition, finger force estimation experiments with using the integrated wearable sensor were conducted. In conclusion, it is confirmed that the integrated wearable sensor is useful for estimating finger force regardless of finger postures.

Monitoring of scratching motion, accompany with itchiness, is important for the medical treatment of skin diseases associated with itchiness. In previous study, the sensor system for measuring human scratching by scratch sound is developed and the relationship between the scratch sounds and the mechanical characteristics of human scratch motion was investigated. However, evaluation of human scratching motion against their own skin is not enough, because it is difficult to measure the contact force against human skin during scratching human skin. Therefore, in this paper, in order to measure the contact force, such as pressing force and shearing force of human scratching motion against their own skin, a contact force estimation method using three dimensional motion measurement system is proposed. In experiment, motions of scratching weakly and strongly artificial skin placed on 3-axis force sensor were measured. And finger tip trajectories and deformation of artificial skin were analyzed and compared with contact force. From the result, it is confirmed that the proposed estimation method is available to estimate the contact force during scratching.

Recently, most of infants wear diapers in their daily life. Due to wearing a diaper, contact stimuli on skin causes dermatitis. The contact stimulus is measured by sensory evaluation. However, it is difficult to carry out sensory evaluation on infants. Therefore, a sensory system which can objectively evaluate the contact stimulus is demanded. In previous studies, we have developed a contact stimulus sensor using a polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) film and a strain gauge. However, influence of pressure distribution on contact stimulus feeling by human is not investigated. In this paper, a stimulation system of contact stimulus was developed in order to provide steady stimulus to human skin and sensor part. And a pressure distribution sensor is used as a contact stimulus sensor in order to investigate the influence of pressure distribution. In experiments, 4 kinds of diaper samples were evaluated by human sensory evaluation and sensor measurements. The sensor outputs were compared with human evaluated by human sensory evaluation and sensor measurements. The sensor outputs were compared with human evaluation values. From the results, it was found that a feeling of pressure is related to average pressure on the whole sensor, and a feeling of rubbing is related to degree of pressure concentration.

Physician palpation is a useful medical examination, because it is non-invasive, quick and simple. However, to make an accurate diagnosis using palpation, physicians need long-time training and practice. Moreover, it is difficult for beginners to learn how to make a motion on palpation and what to feel at that time. Therefore, this study aims to clarify the relationship between the palpation motions and haptic sense, and to support beginners to improve the palpation skill. We focus on a palpation for prostate gland and develop a prostate palpation simulator for measuring actual palpation motions. By using the simulator and a measurement system consisting of four infrared cameras and a load cell, the palpation motions of an expert and five beginners are measured. Then it is confirmed that the expert has better palpation skills than beginners. And the characteristics of effective motions for making a diagnosis of prostate cancer and hypertrophy are extracted.

Palpation is a simple diagnosis method that doctors examine body and organs of patients by feeling with their hand. However, palpation is not objective because the palpation sensitivity depends on skill and experiences of doctors. Therefore, an objective method for measuring tactile information is required. In previous studies, a tactile sensor which can measure the mobility of tumors is proposed. Mobility is important information to determine the malignancy of tumors. In this study, to investigate mobility of abnormalities, we performed sensory evaluation and the tactile sensor evaluation using palpation models with abnormality. From the comparison of the results, it was found that there is a strong correlation between mobility evaluated by the tactile sensor and mobility by humans Therefore, it is confirmed that the sensor is available to evaluate the mobility that humans feel.

This study aims to develop a novel measurement system for the finger joint angle by using a soft polymer sensor, which enables easier evaluation of human motion. In the rehabilitation, it is important to evaluate human motion quantitatively for effective treatment. In this study, we focus on hand grip motion, which is important motion for eating and drinking. From the previous studies, it has been elucidated that the outputs from the soft polymer sensor are proportional to the mean of sensor curvatures. The sensor has good flexibility. Therefore, finger bending motion can be measured by attaching the sensor on the finger joint. To obtain the relationship between sensor outputs and finger joint angles, the sensor outputs during grasping motion is compared with the finger joint angles measured by VICON which is the 3D motion capture system. From the results, it is proved that this system is useful to measure the finger joint angle.

Skin is considered to be the reflection of one&#039;s health, and therefore, monitoring skin condition is important in diagnosing an illness.Palpation is a physical examination, which involves examination of the skin condition by using feeling of touch. The issue associated with the palpation is that it is subjective and therefore causes difficulties such as repetition and exchange of information. To deal with this, sensor systems capable of measuring the skin condition in various parts of the body are demanded. The previously developed sensor system was able to measure both roughness and stiffness of the human skin but not simultaneously. In this paper,a handheld haptic device, focusing on simultaneously measuring the roughness and stiffness of the human skin is developed using a PolyVinylidene DiFluoride(PVDF) film and strain gauges as sensory elements.

In recent years, aging of population is more and more progressing. The number of people who is bedridden is increasing because muscle strength and muscle mass decrease as people age. Therefore, rehabilitation and training are needed for independent lives. In order to improve their safety and efficiency, it is important to measure the state of muscle activity and muscle fatigue. Mechanomyogram (MMG) is one of the invasive method to evaluate a state of muscle. In addition, measuring surrounding muscles simultaneously is necessary to evaluate effects of rehabilitation and training because motions are performed by some muscles. Therefore, in this study, the state of crural muscles in isometric contraction was measured by multipoint MMG. Four sensors were taped on medial head of gastrocnemius muscle, lateral head of gastrocnemius muscle, tibialis anterior and the shinbone. Root mean squares and power spectral densities (PSD) were calculated from MMG signal to measure muscle activity. By comparing PSDs from four sensors, there are different frequency components in PSD from medial head from that from lateral head. From the results, it was found that the multiple MMG measurement is available to estimate the whole muscle activity during exercise.

Palpation is a simple diagnosis method that doctors examine body and organs of patients by feeling with their hand. However, palpation is not objective because the palpation sensitivity depends on skill and experience of doctors. Therefore, an objective method for measuring tactile information is required. In related studies, the tactile sensor which can measure the size, the hardness and the position of a tumor is proposed. However, there is no system that can measure the mobility of a tumor which is fundamental information in a diagnosis by palpation. In this study, a palpation sensor system for evaluating the mobility of a tumor is fabricated. In measurement, the sensor measures the reaction force from the measuring object, while the sensor scans on the object. In reference to the motion of the doctor&#039;s hand during palpation, the sensor reciprocates above the tumor. By the reciprocating scanning, the waveforms with two peaks are obtained in the sensor output. Compared the time gap between the two peaks with the displacement of the tumor, it is found that the time gap is strongly related to the displacement. From the results, it is confirmed that the sensor is available to evaluate the mobility of a tumor.

This paper describes development of a roll type contact stimulus evaluation system. In this study, contact force applied on skin with diaper and diaper friction are measured as the contact stimulus. First, in order to measure the contact stimulus, contact stimulus sensor is fabricated. The sensor comprises a polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) film and strain gauge. Next, roll type contact stimulus evaluation system is designed. In the system, roundish body part of infants such as hip is simplified into cylindrical shape. The relative motion of the hip joint is simplified into rotational motion of the cylinder. Based on the features of sensor outputs, some parameters are proposed in order to evaluate the contact stimulus. Then, three kinds of commercial disposable diaper are used as measuring objects. Sensory test about contact stimulus of the diapers are carried out on adults. And using the developed roll-type system, measurement of the diapers are conducted. By comparing the sensory evaluation value with the evaluation parameters calculated from sensor output, it is found that some evaluation parameters for the diaper obtaining the strongest &quot;prickly sensation&quot; and &quot;irritated sensation&quot; are bigger than others. From the results, it is confirmed that the developed system is useful for estimation of contact stimulus.

This paper describes an investigation of fundamental characterization of a contact stimulus by diapers. Contact stimulus is a kind of mechanical stimulus like contact force or friction. A sensor for measuring the contact stimulus is fabricated. The polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film, which is a kind of piezoelectric material, and a strain gauge are used as the sensor parts. In order to investigate relationship between the contact stimulus and the sensor outputs, a machine which can give rise to the contact stimulus between the sensor and diapers by rotating the sensor is developed. By using this machine, friction between the sensor and a diaper is measured. A parameter calculated from the PVDF film outputs is proposed for evaluating friction. It was confirmed that there is a possibility to evaluate friction of diaper aginst the sensor by the proposed parameter.

This paper describes a development of a measurement system for monitoring muscle activities of gastrocnemius muscle using a mechanomyogram (MMG) sensor. The measurement system is composed of MMG sensor, load cell and monitoring display. In MMG measurement of gastrocnemius muscle, the subjects sit on the measurement system in the long sitting position and perform a leg isometric constraction against a footboard with load cell. In experiment, for stable and reproducible measurement, proper footboard angle and proper force stepping on the footboard are investigated. First, to decide proper footboard angle, MMG measurement are carried out under conditions with three kind of footboard angle. Next, to decide proper exerting force, MMG measurement are carried out under conditions with three kind of force. As a result, it is found that the MMG measurement can be carried out stably and reproducibly under conditions that footboard angle is π/9[rad], and force is 7[%] of maximum voluntary contraction.

In this paper, a sensor system for evaluating tactile feelings of scalp hair is developed. A sensor with concentric circles shape projection which imitates fingerprint was mounted on a beam that was fixed to a linear slider. A Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) film was used as a sensory part. The sensor output was obtained by contacting with the measuring object and scanning on it. Three parameters that are expected to have correlations with tactile feelings were calculated by signal processing of sensor outputs. Evaluation of human hair has problems due to randomicity and difficulty of putting them uniformly without overlapping. Therefore, a plate imitating the physical and chemical properties of human hair surface was used as measuring objects for stable measurement. The plates cleaned down with several kinds of treatment were measured by the sensor and human sense. By comparison between sensor outputs and sensory evaluation, it is confirmed that the sensor system can discriminate the treatment effects. The results suggest that these factors could be evaluated by the sensor system.

This paper describes a development of a polymer sensor using solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) film. The sensor has a basic structure that a SPE film is sandwiched between thin carbon films and conductive tape is attached on each carbon film. SPE film has a good flexibility, and can be used in air. First, output response to deformation is confirmed by applying the displacement to the sensor. Then a curvature sensor using the material is proposed. In experiments, it is found that the proposed sensor is available to measure the curvature directly.

In this study, a mechanomyogram (MMG) sensor system for monitoring muscle conditions is developed. The polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film is used as the sensory receptor of the MMG sensor. The sensor performance is verified by the fundamental experiment. The results show that the mean power frequency (MPF) of the sensor output is related to firing rate of action potential (AP) of muscle and the variance of the sensor output is related to the activity of fast fibers and complete recruitment. Next, muscle activities of isometric contraction are studied using the developed MMG sensor before and after muscle fatigue. Measurements were conducted on biceps and triceps brachii of healthy subjects with load. Experimental results show that contraction of fast fibers is occurred earlier and fast fibers activity increase earlier due to muscle fatigue. Focusing on the time shift of local maximum point in MPF and decrease of growth rate in variance, parameters for evaluation of muscle fatigue degree are proposed.

In this paper, a nail mounted palpation sensor is developed in order to perform a palpation by hand and stiffness measurement by a sensor simultaneously. The polyvinydene fluoride (PVDF) film. which is a kind of piezoelectric materials, is used as the sensor material. The sensor consists of a PVDF film, silicone sheet and a false nail. PVDF film was glued to silicone sheet, and is attached on artificial nail. The whole sensor part is fitted to finger nail with double-sided tape. In measurement, the finger is vibrated by a vibro-machine fitted to the root of the finger and the sensor output is obtained by contacting the finger tip on the objects. The fundamental characteristic and possibility of stiffness measurement are investigated using the silicone rubber samples with Young's modulus corresponding to prostatic cancer and normal prostate. The experimental results showed that magnitude of output voltage is corresponded with the stiffness of sample. It is confirmed that the nail mounted palpation sensor is possible to discriminate the stiffness by experiments.

Human skin, which mainly consists of epidermis, dermis and hypodermis, is the largest organ of a human body. It has a lot of roles, for example, protection function, moisture maintenance function, and sensory function. Moreover, it becomes a parameter that shows the health condition and beauty, because the skin is the outermost layer of a human body. Therefore, the development of the sensor that can measure the skin conditions in various parts of the body is demanded. However, sensors that had been developed before can measure limited parts of body or can measure only in limited condition. In this paper, the sensor that can measure various parts of human body in various conditions is developed and evaluated by measurement of the artifical skins that have various hardness and roughness.

This paper discusses the capability of Eddy Current Monitoring (ECM) system as a in-situ evaluation method of crack propagation in a Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) environment. The ECM experiment with the eddy current probes on the outer surface of a large-scale pipe specimen, demonstrates the capability to monitor the propagation of cracks introduced from the inner surface of the specimen in a simulated BWR environment. The numerical simulation of eddy current signals shows that the experimental signals can explain the crack propagation. This provides that the ECM system is an effective method to evaluate the crack growth quantitatively.

In this work, monitoring system for human scratching behavior has been developed in order to evaluate itch sensation and therapeutic process of skin disease. For this purpose, a nail-mounted scratch sound sensor, a finger bending polymer sensor, and a ring-type finger force senor were designed and the effectiveness against monitoring of scratching were verified by experiment. Additionally, relationship between sensor output from scratch sound sensor and scratch motion properties such as shear force and velocity wasinvestigated. And estimation methods of motion properties were constructed.

This study planned to develop a labor simulator for learning tool on basic research. The differences of the motion during the conduct of labor between students and experts were examined. The pressure sensor using pressure sensitive conductive ink was used to measure the pressure of the finger and the palm during the conduct labor. We measured the pressure during the conduct of labor on 13 students and 17 experts. Then the characteristic of the motion experts were extracted by the results from pressure sensor and motion picture. Expert mean pressure are higher than student ones and in addition the large variation of expert were showed during the conduct labor. The correlation coefficients between the pressure profiles of right hand and left hands during the delivery of the external occipital protuberance were calculated. It is founds that the best conduct labor method is frontage position method because It is the highest rate of synchronizing between right hand and lift hand during the conduct of labor.
