Abstract. The Earth climate system is out of energy balance, and heat hasaccumulated continuously over the past decades, warming the ocean, the land, the cryosphere, and the atmosphere. According to the Sixth Assessment Reportby Working Group I of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, this planetary warming over multiple decades is human-driven and results inunprecedented and committed changes to the Earth system, with adverseimpacts for ecosystems and human systems. The Earth heat inventory providesa measure of the Earth energy imbalance (EEI) and allows for quantifyinghow much heat has accumulated in the Earth system, as well as where the heat isstored. Here we show that the Earth system has continued to accumulateheat, with 381±61 ZJ accumulated from 1971 to 2020. This is equivalent to aheating rate (i.e., the EEI) of 0.48±0.1 W m−2. The majority, about 89 %, of this heat is stored in the ocean, followed by about 6 %on land, 1 % in the atmosphere, and about 4 % available for meltingthe cryosphere. Over the most recent period (2006–2020), the EEI amounts to0.76±0.2 W m−2. The Earth energy imbalance is the mostfundamental global climate indicator that the scientific community and thepublic can use as the measure of how well the world is doing in the task ofbringing anthropogenic climate change under control. Moreover, thisindicator is highly complementary to other established ones like global meansurface temperature as it represents a robust measure of the rate of climatechange and its future commitment. We call for an implementation of theEarth energy imbalance into the Paris Agreement's Global Stocktake based onbest available science. The Earth heat inventory in this study, updated fromvon Schuckmann et al. (2020), is underpinned by worldwide multidisciplinarycollaboration and demonstrates the critical importance of concertedinternational efforts for climate change monitoring and community-basedrecommendations and we also call for urgently needed actions for enablingcontinuity, archiving, rescuing, and calibrating efforts to assure improvedand long-term monitoring capacity of the global climate observing system. The data for the Earth heat inventory are publicly available, and more details are provided in Table 4.

Abstract Decadal variability of the North Pacific subtropical mode water (STMW) and its influence on the upper thermocline and mixed layer are examined in a four-dimensional variational ocean re-analysis for the Western North Pacific over 30 years (FORA–WNP30). The STMW that forms south of the Kuroshio Extension becomes thick/cold and thin/warm on decadal timescales. These variations are subducted and advected to the south, where thick (thin) STMW causes the upper thermocline to heave up (down) above the STMW, producing cold (warm) temperature anomalies at subsurface depths, with especially large anomalies at the depths of the seasonal thermocline. Temperature anomalies also appear in the mixed layer from March to November, except in September. These anomalies have the same sign as the temperature anomalies of the STMW, although they are due not to the reemergence of the STMW at the surface but to the heaving of the upper thermocline. In the FORA–WNP30, because the formation of the mixed layer temperature anomalies owes much to the increment introduced by data assimilation, the mechanism remains unclear. A heat budget analysis of the mixed layer, however, suggests the importance of entrainment and/or vertical diffusion at the base of the mixed layer for conveying temperature anomalies from the upper thermocline to the mixed layer. The STMW also affects the mixed layer depth. A thick (thin) STMW shoals (deepens) the seasonal thermocline, enhancing (weakening) stratification at depths below the mixed layer and thus hindering (favoring) mixed layer development from July to September.

The density-compensated salinity anomalies (spiciness anomalies) in the upper North Pacific were investigated using Argo float profiles during 2004–2018. The freshening of the subtropical thermocline was found within the Central Mode Water (CMW) and the North Pacific Intermediate Water (salinity minimum). Meanwhile, the increase of salinity was found in the lighter layer within the North Pacific Tropical Water (salinity maximum). The interannual and longer spiciness anomalies were interpreted with three-dimensional evolutions and were linked to the fate of three mode waters (i.e., Subtropical Mode Water (STMW), Eastern Subtropical Mode Water (ESTMW), and CMW) for the first time. In the STMW, the salinity was dominated by a quasi-decadal variability, which was consistent with the KE variability with a 1-year lag, and did not show rapid freshening. In the CMW, the salinity decreased with a quasi-decadal variability, which was weaker and out of the phase compared with the STMW. In the ESTMW, the salinity was dominated by year-to-year variability. The spiciness anomalies originated mainly in the outcrop region of the isopycnals, where they were accompanied by the formation and the subduction of the mode waters. They also propagated and decayed downstream the geostrophic currents. However, a few of the interannual anomalies found in the northern part of the CMW were almost dampened before their spread further south. In addition, some anomalies in the ESTMW appeared and intensified without a connection to the mixed layer. These anomalies occurred far from the outcrop line, suggesting these were caused likely by salt fingering associated with the modification of the mode waters. Furthermore, the propagation of the spiciness anomalies in the western to the central subtropics was significantly faster than the geostrophic current and inclined to the inner side of streamlines. These indicated the transport by eddies in addition to the mean geostrophic currents.

The Sulawesi Sea is a semi-enclosed basin located in the Indonesian Seas and considered as the one of location in the west route of Indonesian Throughflow (ITF). There is less attention on the mixed layer depth investigation in the Sulawesi Sea. Concerning that the mixed layer plays an important role in influencing the ocean in air-sea interaction and affects biological activity, the estimation of mixed layer depth (MLD) in the Sulawesi Sea is important. Seasonal variation of the mixed layer in the Sulawesi Sea between 115°-125°E and 0°-8°N is estimated by using World Ocean Atlas 2013. Forcing elements on the mixed layer in terms of surface-forced turbulent mixing from mechanical forcing of wind stress and buoyancy forcing (from heat flux as well as freshwater flux) in the Sulawesi Sea is provided by using a reanalysis dataset. The MLD is estimated directly on grid profiles with interpolated levels based on chosen density fixed criterion of 0.03 kg.m-3 and temperature criterion of 0.5°C difference from the surface. The results show that mixed layer depth in the Sulawesi Sea varies both spatially and temporally. Generally, the deepest MLD was occurred during the southwest monsoon (JJA), and the lowest MLD was occurred during the first transition (MAM) and second transition monsoon (SON). Strengthening and weakening MLD are influenced by mechanical forcing from wind stress and buoyancy flux. In the Sulawesi Sea, the mixed layer deepening coincides with the occurrence of a maximum in wind stress, and low buoyancy flux at the surface. This condition is the opposite when mixed layer shallowing occurs.

The importance of deep ocean observation has been gradually recognized to understand oceanic effects on the anthropogenic climate change accurately, especially the oceanic heat content and the sea level rise. One suitable device for the observation is a deep float and a monitoring network for deep ocean with many deep floats, which means a deep-ward extension of the Argo, should be built by 2020 as an international consensus of observational ocean sciences. However, there were no floats that can observe the deep ocean below 2,000 m and some institutes and float makers are now developing a deep float. In Japan, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology and Tsurumi-Seiki Co. Ltd. began to develop a deep float, "Deep NINJA," in 2010, and finally it became available in public in April 2013. Deep NINJA is the first practical float for the deep ocean observation, which can observe the depth up to 4,000 m in the whole ocean except for the area covered by sea ice throughout the year. It is 210 cm in height and about 50 kg in weight with a multi-stage-shaped aluminum-alloy hull. A CTD sensor is attached on the top. The float is designed to have sufficient capacity to load additional sensors, e.g. dissolved oxygen. Bi-directional data transmission of Iridium enables to transfer highresolution data from the float and to change its operation in the sea. The float locations at the sea surface are accurately fixed by the Global Positioning System. The float is driven by lithium batteries to extend its lifetime in the sea, which is estimated at more than 1 year. The article is the former part of the detail explanation on Deep NINJA technologies and it will describe those of the float hardware, especially on buoyancy engine, pressure hull, fixing position, and data transmission.

We deployed two profiling floats south of the Kuroshio Extension in March 2000 as a prelirninary study of the Japan Argo project. Temperature and salinity profiles from the depth of 1, 500×104Pa to the surface are reported every two and four weeks, respectively. On the bases of the float obserbations, together with altimeter data, we investigated the water masscs in the region and analyzed the vertial structure ofthe cyclonic eddy, that advected the two floats from May through July 2000. The analysis showed that the eddy had typical characteristics of the mesoscale eddies commonly seen south of the Kuroshio Extension.

Abstract OneArgo is a major expansion of the Argo program, which has provided two decades of transformative physical data for the upper 2 km of the global ocean. The present Argo array will be expanded in three ways: (1) Global Core: the existing upper ocean measurements will be extended to high latitudes and marginal seas and with enhanced coverage in the tropics and western boundaries of the major ocean basins; (2) Deep: deep ocean measurements will be obtained for the 50% of the global oceans that are below 2,000-m depth; and (3) Biogeochemical: dissolved oxygen, pH, nitrate, chlorophyll, optical backscatter, and irradiance data will be collected to investigate biogeochemical variability of the upper ocean and the processes by which these cycles respond to a changing climate. The technology and infrastructure necessary for this expansion is now being developed through large-scale regional pilots to further refine the floats and sensors and to demonstrate the utility of these measurements. Further innovation is expected to improve the performance of the floats and sensors and to develop the analyses necessary to provide research-quality data. A fully global OneArgo should be operational within 5‐10 years.

Although the atmospheric dynamics and oceanic dynamics share many similarities, they have been making individual progresses because of difference in target phenomena. In this project, we compare representations of atmospheric general circulation in isentropic coordinates with those of oceanic general circulation in isopycnal coordinates, and create a new common perspective on wave-mean flow interactions. Under adiabatic condition, atmospheric/oceanic parcels move around on isentropic/isopycnal surfaces, respectively. Then, analyzing collective behaviors of fluid parcels help us to make a description of Lagrangian mean. We study formulations of wave-mean flow interactions based on isentropic/isopicnal coordinates, and consistently interpret transports of mass, heat, angular momentum, minor constituents and so on. Also, we investigate cold outbreak of polar cold airmass under a designated potential temperature from a viewpoint of climate change.

A comprehensive analysis was performed using various satellite observation data, reanalysis data, ship observation data, and Argo float observation data. In addition, the simulation of the relationship between sea surface temperature and clouds was performed using the regional meteorological model WRF. As a result, it was shown that the low clouds in the summer North Pacific, which have been analyzed from relatively simple viewpoints such as sea surface temperature and atmospheric stability, have different fine structures in the western and central regions. In the western part of the North Pacific Ocean, the Kuroshio and Kuroshio Extension are dominant, and cloud fluctuations have little effect on the sea. On the other hand, in the central part of the North Pacific Ocean, it is suggested that the ocean mixing layer is shallow and the sea surface temperature affects the clouds, but the fluctuation of the clouds also influences the ocean mixing layer.

Submesoscale disturbances on the scale of several kilometers to several tens of kilometers play an important role in the energy cascade and the material transport in the ocean. As a foundation for investigating the wide-area distribution of submesoscale disturbances, a method to detect submesoscale disturbance by using temperature/salinity intrusion structure from the vertical profile data of Argo profiling float array deployed over the global ocean. In order to understand the process to form a high vertical wave number structure associated with the development of submesoscale phenomena, unique intensive shipboard observation was carried out in the east coast of Honshu, enabling us to grasp this process directly and in detail. This observation quantitatively and theoretically supported the above identification method.

Intensive atmosphere-ocean observations were conducted in the Kuroshio-Oyashio Extension region using research vessels and a moored buoy in order to clarify impacts of the sea surface temperature fronts on the atmosphere, and formation and maintenance processes of the oceanic fronts and water masses. We showed that both the Kuroshio Extension front in early summer (Baiu/Meiyu season) and the Subarctic front in late winter caused differences in height of the atmospheric boundary layer and low-level clouds across the fronts, as well as cross-frontal pressure gradients. We also clarified variations of water mass transport and nutrients in the surface layer caused by the quasi-stationary jet. Our observations also captured temporal changes of the wintertime ocean mixed layer on a short time scale, and transportation of subarctic water masses to the south of the Kuroshio Extension.

Employed the Australian-wide geomagnetic array data, we investigated the mechanism of the outstanding power spectrum density of geomagnetic variation corresponding to M2 tide observed at Alice Springs, central Australia, and estimated 3-D electrical conductivity profile in the uppermantle beneath entire Australian continent after elimination of the tidal effect. A distribution of the large geomagnetic power spectrum density corresponding to M2 tide is consistent with the land surface conductivity distribution rather than periodic current distribution. The upper mantle conductivity model beneath Australian continent clearly revealed the geological terrains, in particular Yilgarn and Pilbara Cratons.

Heat penetration process in the North Pacific Ocean and Quasi-decadal (QD) surface salinity variability in the tropical Pacific Ocean were quantitatively investigated using observational data. The signal of QD variability is significantly included in the surface salinity trend. The downward heat penetration from the mixed layer to the subsurface ocean is crucial role for the surface temperature even during summer season, indicating that the properties in the shallow mixed layer are influenced by exchanges from that in the lower layer. Those results are important parts of the research for mechanisms of the global surface salinity change, improving the previous knowledge of the global climate and environment changes.

Studies made in 2002 are as follows. (1)We investigated the spatio-temporal correlation analyses for the sea surface temperature (SST) data free from clouds, and we also developed the advanced method generating new generation SST (2)We prepared the daily and cloud-free SST dataset for September and October 2000, which was used in the numerical model for prediction. This dataset was archived in the CD-ROM recording the present study results. (3)Under the cooperative study with Japan Marine Science and Technology Center, we made ADCP monitoring through a year by a ferry regularly shuttling between Tokyo and Ogasawara Islands. (4)Using the training vessel, "Miyagi-Maru" belonging to Miyagi Prefectural Education Committee, we made high density XBT monitoring three times a year between Hawaii and Japan. Using these data together with the PX-37 data, we estimated heat and freshwater transports crossing these lines. (5)We investigated an interaction between mesoscale eddies and the Kuroshio path variation using TOPEX POSEIDEON altimeter data. It was found that the collision of eddy to the Kuroshio caused the small meander of the Kuroshio. (6)Detailed analyses of the XBT data showed that several Japanese XBT converters were suffered from so-called "Bowing phenomenon". It was also found that the XBT data from the sea surface to 4m were suffered from the transient response of the XBT measurement system.

Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), UNESCO, proposed to construct Global Ocean Observing System, GOOS, during the United Nations Convention on Environment and Development in 1992. GOOS has five modules : climate, health of the ocean, living marine resources, coastal area management, and ocean service. GOOS aims to realize ocean forecasting in the operational mode. Sub-commission for the Western Pacific, of IOC, started in 1997 a regional project North East Asia, NEAR-GOOS, to collect ocean data in Japan Sea, Yellow Sea, and East China Sea by a real time mode. The four countries, Japan, Korea, China and Russian Federation, observe in the sea area, but the data are exchanged within 18 months. The data delay causes difficulty for the ocean forecasting. In NEAR-GOOS, the data are reported by Global Transmission System of WMO, and some of them are reported to the database through the internet. We are engaged with Scientific Research of Priority Area (B), Physical, chemical and biological studies on monitoring of marginal seas for ocean forecasting, which aims to forecasting of sea conditions by observation of temperature, salinity, currents, water level, chemical substances and plankton abundance in the marginal seas. The present study aims for promotion of data exchange, cooperation of ocean observation, and proposal for the global program. The investigators were dispatched to Russian Federation, China, Korea, Philippine for the promotion of data exchange. Scientists were invited from Philippine, Korea, Taiwan, and Russia to cooperate current measurements by submarine cables. Japanese members attended various meetings of the GOOS.International ocean reserach institutes are cooperating to establish GOOS, and there held POGO at Scripps Institution, Sao Paul University. The results of the research are printed in journals, and they are used for the Scientific Research of Priority Area (B).

The purpose of the present study was to clarify circulation and mixing, and their temporal changes of major water masses in the subtropical/tropical boundary region, especially aiming to see inflow of anomalous subtropical water into the tropical gyre. We analyzed i) the repeat hydrographic section data in the western North Pacific, ii) the data from our own synoptic survey in the western tropical North Pacific, and iii) other available hydrography including WOCE/WHP. The main results are as follows. 1. Isopycnal analysis of the data (i) and (iii) captured the low-salinity water carried by the North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC) at about 5ィイD1oィエD1N, 200-300m and 26.5σィイD2θィエD2. This water probably originates in the northeastern subtropics and reaches to the tropics via the western boundary region. North Pacific Tropical Intermediate Water (NPTIW) was also captured as the high-salinity and low-oxygen water originated in the eastern tropics carried to the west, suffering considerable mixing with the adjacent subtropical water along its advection path. 2. The CTD and ADCP data (ii) provided a "snapshot" of the flow field and the water mass distribution, which supports the view that the low-salinity water of the subtropical origin is carried into the NECC via the western boundary region. Comparison between the result #1 above and this snapshot suggests that NPTIW has little temporal variability while the low-salinity water varies associated with the NECC variability. 3. The repeat hydrography (i) revealed the remarkable decadal change in North Pacific Tropical Water, which is originated in the central subtropics and carried by the North Equatorial Current. The change was caused not only by the thermohaline-forcing change in the formation region but also the dynamic-forcing change, that is the change in the wind field, resulting in the increased formation rate and the intensified gyre.

In the present study, the following three items were carried out : (1) Precise measurement of sea surface height by GPS kinematic survey installed on a ferry boat, (2) clarification of mesoscale eddies in the studied area using ADCP data and TOPEX/POSEIDON altimeter data and (3) water mass structure and its variation in the studied area using the archived temperature data. Main results can be summarized as follows. (1) Using the ferry Ogasawara Maru which shuttles between Tokyo and Ogasawara Islands, we carried out the GPS kinematic survey in September 1999. We could obtain the data suitable for analysis when the distance of two GPS stations (the reference station and the ferry) is short (shorter than hundreds km). However, it was found that the distance is relatively longer, the data are not suitable for analysis. From the data obtained when the ferry was anchored at Hutami Port, we could detect the tidal signal with enough accuracy. (2) Using the ADCP data and TOPEX/POSEIDON altimeter data, we analyzed the mesoscale eddies in the Kuroshio recirculation area. We found a plenty of anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies whose diameter is approximately 500km. The temporal scale is estimated to be approximately 80 days. It was suggested these eddies are formed on the Kuroshio Extension area. (3) Using the archived temperature data, we made the gridded temperature data and analyzed interannual variation of subtropical mode water with respect to the strength of wintertime East Asia monsoon. It was found that when the wintertime East Asian monsoon is strong (weak), thick (thin) and cold (warm) subtropical mode water is formed.

Downstream changes of the transport and water characteristics of the Kuroshio were investigated with the long-term repeat hydrographic sections. We also use the new climatological data constructed by our group and the high-resolution hydrograhic data obtained by our extensive survey of the Kuroshio by R/V Hakuho Maru, the cruise KH-96-4. The main results are as follows. 1. Long-term mean geostrophic fluxes of the Kuroshio relative to 800 dbar or 1000 dbar were calculated by the potentrial density classes of 0.1 siguma_<theta> interval. Ii was shown that the downstream increase of the transport from the East China Sea to the south of Japan depends on the density classes. The increase in the density classes of North Pacific Subtropical Mode Water (NPSTMW) and North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) is remarkable. The water of these classes shows downstream changes of the water characteristics, which indicates vigorous inflow of relatively new NPSTMW and NPIW into the Kuroshlo. 2. Differences in the water characteristics of the density classes of NPSTMW and NPIW were detected, which is consistent with the previous hypothesis that the advection of these water masses from the east is severely reduced during the large-meander periods of the Kuroshio. The consistent differences in the water properties over the Kuroshio recirculation region were also detected based on our new climatological data. 3. The spatial structures of the Kuroshio water, revealed by the repeat hydrographic sections described above, were confirmed and refined by the snapshot data obtained by our extensive survey, KH-96-4.

  3. On the role of Subtropical Mode Water on the biogeochemical cycles in the North Pacific ocean

    More details Close

Mode waters are important water masses of exceptionally uniform properties over an extensive depth range, and are present in all Earth’s oceans. In the North Pacific, one mode water, the North Pacific Subtropical Mode Water (NPSTMW), has been observed south of the Kuroshio in the North Pacific. NPSTMW occupies a large volume at subsurface and is renewed by subduction south of the Kuroshio every year. Then NPSTMW recirculates below the surface layers, where the phytoplankton uses nutrients and carbon for its metabolism. Even though they play an important role in the nutrient and carbon oceanic cycles, mode waters are still poorly understood in a biogeochemical perspective. In the framework of the JSPS program, we seek the NPSTMW biogeochemical properties, at large spatial scale and on a decadal timescale, by analysing model solutions from an ocean general circulation biogeochemical model (NEMO-PISCES). Also, observations collected in the North Pacific (Japan Meteorological Agency) will be shown. First, the study is focused on the nutrient budgets within NPSTMW and its impact on the upper layers of the subtropical gyre. Then, the setting and variability of the NPSTMW biogeochemical

The Upper Ocean Variability in the Midlatitude North Pacific: An Approach to Effective Monitoring Seeking for an effective way to monitor the upper ocean variability with minimum efforts and limited resources, especially for most effective sites where permanent observing stations should be occupied, we have analyzed the historical hydrographic and XBT data to document the variability of the upper ocean thermal condition of the midlatitude North Pacific. Our analysis shows that the upper ocean variability is fairly dominated by the two mode waters: the North Pacific Subtropical Mode Water in the western region or the Kuroshio recirculation region and the North Pacific Central Mode Water in the central to eastern region. The mode waters, characterized as thermostads/pycnostads, are formed in the wintertime thick mixed layer as a result of vigorous air-sea interaction, and then spread beyond their spatially confined formation areas. The mode water properties at a given site vary with reflecting variations of the air-sea interaction and/or the upper ocean circulation. Based on the proper knowledge about characteristics of the mode water formation and circulation, the upper ocean v
