Controlling the dispersion state of nanoparticles in a polymer matrix is necessary to produce polymer nanocomposites. The surface modification of nanoparticles is used to enable their dispersion in polymers. Moreover, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are useful for revealing the interfacial properties between nanoparticles and polymers to aid in the design of materials. In this study, the effect of surface coverage, modifier length, and polymer species on the interfacial structure and affinity between surface-modified Al2O3 and polymer melts were investigated using all-atom MD simulations. Hexanoic, decanoic, and tetradecanoic acids were used as surface modifiers, and polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were used as polymers. The work of adhesion Wadh and the work of immersion Wimm were selected as quantitative measures of affinity. Wadh was calculated using the phantom-wall approach, and Wimm was calculated by simply subtracting the surface tension of polymers γL from Wadh. The results showed that Wadh and Wimm were improved by surface modification with low coverage, owing to a good penetration of the polymer. The effect of modifier length on Wadh and Wimm was small. Whereas Wadh increased in the following order: PP < PS < PMMA, Wimm increased as follows: PMMA < PS < PP. Finally, the trend of Wadh and Wimm was organized using the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter χ between the modifier and the polymer. This study demonstrates that the interfacial affinity can be improved by tuning the surface coverage and modifier species depending on the polymer matrix.

Abstract Rapid cooling of reactants quenches the intermediate state of chemical reactions and enables the synthesis of novel materials that cannot be realized by thermodynamic equilibrium processes. In this study, we estimated the cooling rate of reactant solutions during the supercritical hydrothermal synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles. Neutron radiography measurements were performed to visualize the profile of the average water density at a junction where a stream of heated water was mixed with another stream of cooling water. The cooling rate of the heated water that mimicked the reactant solution was estimated using the relationship between the density and temperature of water under constant pressure conditions. This result should provide vital information about the flow-type synthesis of novel metal oxide nanoparticles.

Poly (N-Isopropylacrylamide-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (P(NIPAM-co-HEMA)) was synthesized using ultrasonic irradiation in a mixed solvent of water and ethanol without chemical initiator. Effect of monomer molar ratio on time courses of conversion to polymer, number average molecular weight, and polydispersity of synthesized polymers were investigated in order to determine the optimum conditions to synthesize the temperature-responsive polymer with low molecular weight distribution (i.e., low polydispersity). The higher the ratio of NIPAM to HEMA, the higher the polymerization rate because ethanol acts as a scavenger in radical polymerization. The higher ratio of NIPAM also resulted in faster polymer degradation. Copolymers with low polydispersity were obtained at any monomer molar ratio. The transmittance of aqueous solutions of copolymers synthesized with various monomer molar ratios decreased abruptly at a critical temperature which depends on the monomer molar ratio. The lower the ratio of NIPAM, the lower the critical value (LCST) because NIPAM is less hydrophobic than HEMA.

Poly (N-Isopropylacrylamide-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (P(NIPAAm-co-HEMA)) was synthesized using ultrasonic irradiation without chemical initiator in the mixed solvent of water and ethanol. Effects of solvent composition, monomer molar ratio, and reaction temperature on time course of conversion to polymer, number average molecular weight, and polydispersity were investigated in order to synthesize the polymer with low molecular weight distribution (i.e., low polydispersity). Lower ethanol composition of solvent resulted in higher conversion to polymer, faster decrease of molecular weight, and lower polydispersity. Ethanol acts as a scavenger for radical polymerization, so that higher ethanol composition decreases the polymerization rate. Faster polymerization rate gives faster generation of polymer, and faster degradation of generated polymer, which resulted in faster decrease of molecular weight and lower polydispersity. Higher NIPAAm ratio resulted in higher polymerization rate, faster polymer degradation rate, and lower polydispersity. In the case of the homopolymer of PNIPAAm and PHEMA, PNIPAAm radical has lower reaction activity with ethanol than PHEMA radical, so that PNIPAAm polymerizes faster than PHEMA. Reaction temperature slightly affected the reaction rate. Temperature dependence of polymerization is positive but that of radical formation is negative, and the effect of those two factors might be almost same.

Poly (N-Isopropylacrylamide-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (P(NIPAM-co-HEMA)) wassynthesized using ultrasonic irradiation in a mixed solvent of water and ethanol without chemical initiator. Theeffects of monomer molar ratio and ultrasonic intensity on time courses of molar fraction of NIPAM andresponsive temperature of synthesized polymers were investigated. In the early stage of the reaction, NIPAMfraction of copolymer was low, that is, the polymerization rate of HEMA is high. This is because the radicalstability of HEMA is higher than that of NIPAM. The relationship between conversion and molar fraction ofNIPAM did not depend on the ultrasound intensity. The lower the ratio of NIPAM, the lower the critical value(LCST) because HEMA is more hydrophobic than NIPAM. The higher polymerization rate resulted in the higherLCST. Those results suggested that the composition and responsive temperature of the copolymer can becontrolled by changing the irradiation time and the ultrasound intensity.

Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Japan Society of Sonochemistry 2015

    More details Close

Poly (N-Isopropylacrylamide-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (P(NIPAM-co-HEMA)) was synthesized using ultrasonic irradiation in a mixed solvent of water and ethanol without chemical initiator. Effect of ultrasonic intensity on time courses of conversion ratio, copolymer composition, number average molecular weight, and polydispersity of synthesized polymers was investigated in order to clarify the reaction mechanism of radical copolymerization of temperature-responsive polymer with low molecular weight distribution (i.e., low polydispersity). The reaction kinetic model for ultrasonic synthesis process of P(NIPAM-co-HEMA) was constructed with considering the cross-propagation reaction and cross-termination reaction in the radical copolymerization of NIPAM and HEMA. The experimental results showed that PNIPAM fraction of the copolymer in the early stage was lower than initial NIPAM fraction. Those results suggested that HEMA terminated radical was more stable than NIPAM terminated radical so that consumption rate of NIPAM was slower than that of HEMA. The calculated results supported that the cross propagation reaction between HEMA terminated radical and NIPAM monomer was much slower than that between NIPAM terminated radical and HEMA monomer.

    More details Close

Poly (N-Isopropylacrylamide-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (P(NIPAM-co-HEMA)) was synthesized using ultrasonic irradiation in a mixed solvent of water and ethanol without chemical initiator.

    More details Close

Poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) was synthesized using ultrasonic irradiation without chemical initiator. Effects of ultrasound intensity on time course of conversion to polymer, number average molecular weight, and polydispersity were investigated in order to synthesize the polymer with low molecular weight distribution (i.e., low polydispersity). According to the experimental results, a kinetic model for polymer synthesis under ultrasonic irradiation was constructed with considering both polymerization and polymer degradation. Poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) was also synthesized at low reaction temperature. The constructed model was applied to the low-temperature synthesis process.

For a packed bed reactor, which consists of a 1/2-inch stainless steel tube filled with alumina particles having the diameter of 3 mm, the flow behavior of heavy oil in the reactor under the atmosphere of nitrogen gas or supercritical water was observed by neutron radiography. In the heavy oil/nitrogen gas system, the effect of reactor temperature on the flow behavior at atmospheric pressure was clarified. Particularly, the flow channeling was observed in the reactor at a relatively high temperature. In the heavy oil/supercritical water system, the effect of flow rate of heavy oil on the flow behavior was investigated at 400℃ and 25 MPa. Through this work, it was revealed that neutron radiography is a useful technique to visualize the flow behavior of heavy oil in a packed bed reactor, whose wall was made of metal, at high temperature and high pressure.

The spatial structures of organic molecule-modified CeO2 nanoparticles in polystyrene (PS) nanocomposite thin films spin-coated on silicon substrates were observed by TEM and SPM, before and after the films underwent thermal annealing above the glass transition temperature of PS. TEM images indicated that the nanoparticles segregated to the surface of PS nanocomposite thin film after spin-coating process. Then, the nanoparticles migrated away from the film surface to the substrate/film interface during thermal annealing, maintaining the two-dimensional spatial structures. Here, we clarified the effect of interaction between nanoparticles, i.e., surface modifiers on the nanoparticles, and solvent or PS on the spatial structures of nanoparticles before and after thermal annealing. In addition, the mechanism of nanoparticle migration across the PS thin film was investigated.

To investigate the effect of melt convection in molten Cu80Co20 on phase separation structures in the undercooled state, the velocity distributions on the surface of an electromagnetically levitated molten Cu80Co20 droplet were measured using a high-speed video camera, and then the structures of the solidified sample were observed by SEM, where the strength of convection was controlled by applying a static magnetic field to the droplet. As a result, it was revealed that the transition from turbulent flow to laminar one in the droplet occurs around 1.5 T at which the phase separation structure of Cu-Co alloy changes remarkably. In addition, the normal spectral emissivity and surface tension of molten Cu-Co alloys with different compositions were measured in the wide temperature range including the undercooling condition by using the same electromagnetic levitator.

For the design and optimization of coating process of nanoparticles/polymer composite thin films and their devise manufacturing, solvent evaporation from the films and dewetting dynamics of the films during thermal annealing were observed, and the relationship between these phenomena and the spatial structure of nanoparticles in the films was investigated. The evaporation rate of organic solvent from the film was strongly affected by the presence of nanopraticles. The dewetting was suppressed by adding nanoparticles which segregated to the film surface. Brownian dynamics simulations suggested that the dispersion state of nanoparticles in solvent depends on the combination of solvent and organic molecules to modify the nanoparticle surface.

In this research, a high-speed regeneration cycle of antioxidants was designed by combining an amphiphilic catechin with a lipophilic vitamin E and a hydrophilic vitamin C for the purpose of long-term prevention of f3-carotene oxidation in the food system. In the presence of vitamin E and C, the following things were clarified: 1) the carotene oxidation was prevented as long as vitamin E existed in the system, 2) vitamin C was related to two contrastive reactions consuming and regenerating vitamin E, 3) the prevention period of carotene oxidation significantly increased under specific conditions. Conventionally the regeneration reaction of vitamin E by vitamin C was considered to contribute the increase of the prevention period. However, oxygen in the system was clarified to be almost consumed by the oxidation of vitamin C itself and consequently the carotene oxidation was prevented. The novel kinetic model considering the reaction mechanisms of carotene, vitamin E and C well described the contrastive effects progressing or preventing the carotene oxidation according to the amounts of vitamin C and oxygen in the system. On the other hand, the following things were clarified in the presence of catechin: 1) catechin was related to two contrastive reactions consuming carotene and preventing the carotene oxidation and 2) the structure of catechin was controlled which reaction preferentially occurred.

The aims of the present work are to manufacture a micro compression tester to measure the mechanical properties of a particle aggregate formed in a shear flow, and to investigate the effect of several factors on the compressive deformation characteristics of the aggregate. This year, the followings were carried out. 1.Manufacture of glass fiber probe : a manufacturing technique of a glass fiber probe to compress a particle aggregate was established by combining hydrofluoric acid etching and optical polishing. 2.Visualization of compressive deformation behavior of particle aggregate : a three-dimensional visualization technique of aggregate by superimposing laser scanning confocal microscope images was established. 3.Compression test : the compression test of a particle aggregate formed in a shear flow was carried out, and the effectiveness of a micro compression tester developed here was demonstrated. Before the compression test, the aggregation and breakup behaviors of latex particles in shear flow confined between two parallel plates were investigated using an in situ observation apparatus with a laser scanning confocal microscope. As a result, the average size of the aggregates decreases as shear rate increases and the gap width decreases due to the hydrodynamic effect acting on the aggregates. The size distributions of the aggregates become narrow as the gap width decreases. In addition, the fractal dimension, i.e., the structure of the aggregates, was almost independent of shear rate and the gap width, and approximately 1.2, which suggests that the aggregates are relatively compact.

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the antioxidant activity of catechin and to construct a novel method for preventing the oxidation of desired materials with biological activity in the actual food system using a regeneration reaction of lipid soluble antioxidant with catechin. In 2002, the oxidation experiments of β-carotene, an active oxygen quencher, were performed in an inert n-decane solvent with addition of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) or epicatechin gallate (ECG). In both cases, the induction period, in which the β-carotene concentration decreased slightly, was observed and the oxidation was suppressed. The induction period became longer with increasing the ECG concentration, whereas the period had a maximum at a certain EGCG concentration. EGCG containing pirogallol group is known to oxidize itself to produce activated oxygen. Therefore, EGCG was considered to have a progressive activity of the oxidation as well as the antioxidant activity. β-Carotene is commonly dissolved in the oil in water emulsion when used as a food additive. Catechin haying amphiphilic property is more easily dissolved in the water phase. The reaction of β-Carotene and lipid-soluble antioxidant, α-tocopherol, with catechin occurs on the oil-water interface. In 2003, the oxidation experiments in the presence of α-tocopherol were performed in the biphasic oil-water system having a definite interfacial area. In the biphasic system, the time for which α-tocopherol remained was longer than that in the single phase of n-decane. Since the β-carotene oxidation was suppressed during a-tocopherol remained in the oil phase, the existence of water phase was effective for the suppression of β-carotene oxidation. α-Tochopherol was consumed by its oxidation as well as the antioxidative protection of β-carotene. The peroxyl radical of α-tocopherol concerned with the chain oxidation was easy to dissolve in the water. This phenomenon seemed to contribute the restrain of α-tocopherol consumption, resulting in the suppression of β-carotene oxidation. A kinetic model was constructed by considering the transfer of the α-tocopherol peroxyl radical into the water phase in addition to the oxidation and antioxidation mechanisms of β-carotene. The model quantitatively described the oxidation behavior of β-carotene in the biphasic system over a wide range of the initial α-tocopherol concentrations.

Since the slurries used in the CMP process contain several chemical additives, under certain conditions, the particles in the slurries may aggregate and adhere to the wafer and/or pad surfaces before and during the polishing process. Such aggregations result in defects such as scratches on the wafer surface. Therefore, for performance of good local and global planarity without failures, it is important to determine the optimal conditions for preparation of stabilized slurries without aggregations. In addition, the acquirement of correct knowledge about the size and shape of aggregates during the process, i.e., the aggregation and breakage behaviors of particles in a confined shear flow between the wafer and the pad, is also a critical issue. The aim of the present work is to investigate experimentally and theoretically the particle dynamics in a simple shear flow confined between the two parallel walls. We developed an experimental apparatus with a confocal scanning laser microscope for in-situ observation of the particle dynamics in a shear flow between two parallel disks. In experiment, polystyrene particles of 2μm in diameter were suspended in a NaCl aqueous solution. We could observed the rotational behavior of aggregates in a shear flow. As a result, it was found that lower shear rate results in larger size of aggregates. In addition, as the distance between two disks increased, the average area of aggregates increased. We constructed a mathematical model for particle aggregation process in a shear flow. In this model, we considered the hydrodynamic drag, the interaction between particle and particle, and particle and wall, and colloidal interactions. As the distance between two parallel walls increased, the size of aggregates increased and the number of aggregates contacted with wall decreased. When the colloidal interaction between particle and wall was smaller than that between particle and particle, the size of aggregates increased and the number of aggregates contacted with wall decreased.

Numerical simulations of the manufacturing of waveguides with grating patterns on a nonlinear optical (NLO) polymer film using photothermal poling were carried out The mathematical model was constructed, in which spatial and temporal variations of molecular dipoles during heating with a focused laser beam and electrical poling were considered. The effects of operational factors, i.e., laser power, beam diameter, moving speed of a sample, and electric field strength, on the grating configuration were investigated. As a result, the following guidelines for producing a waveguide with high performance were obtained : the laser beam wavelength should be selected so as to heat uniformly throughout the thickness of the polymer film, the laser power should be as high as possible without causing large deformation in the film, the laser beam diameter should be smaller than half period of the grating, the moving speed of the stage should be slow, and the electric field strength should be as high as possible, if dielectric breakdown is to be avoided. In addition, measurements of the rotational diffusion coefficient and the thermal diffusivity of poly (methyl methacrylate) with Disperse Red 1 (DR1) chromophore side groups were carried out.

The purpose of this study is to construct the continuous synthesis process of monodispersed nanosize titania (TiO_2) particles in which mean particle size is under 50 nm and geometric standard deviation is under 1.2. To synthesis the nanosize TiO_2 particles, there are a build-up and a breakdown method. In this study, alkoxide method was used as a build-up method, and peptization was used as a breakdown method. First, alkoxide method, the synthesis method of TiO_2 particles by hydrolysis and condensation reaction of tetraethyl orthotitanate (TEOT), was examined. The condition to prepare the nanosize particles was examined by using a batch reactor. The ethanol solution of TEOT and hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), a polymer dispersant, was mixed with the water-ethanol solution to progress the reaction. At 0.025 mol/dm^3 of TEOT, 0.025 mol/dm^3 of water, and 2.5 g/dm^3 of HPC, the particle with 38 nm of mean particle size and 1.19 of geometric standard deviation was obtained. Based on the result of the batch experiment, the continuous synthesis was carried out using a slug flow tubular reactor system we have proposed. In this system, a packed bed for the nucleation of particles is connected in series with a slug flow aging tube. Mean particle size and geometric standard deviation of the particles obtained by the continuous system were almost same as that of the batch reactor. The peptization in which large particle was divided by the dissolution of the particle surface was carried out by using the batch reactor. The particle obtained by the alkoxide method was peptized using nitric acid. The optimum value exists for the nitric acid concentration, and the particle with 32 nm was obtained, which was smaller than the particle obtained by the alkoxide method. The geometric standard deviation was 1.22.
