Purpose Parent companies usually control a subsidiary’s operations and decision-making processes and policies. This study highlights how subsidiary research and development (R&D) contributes to a parent company’s global strategy formulation in the context of changes in the integrated responsiveness framework and transnational models. Design/methodology/approach We conducted an interview survey with 149 companies in Japan, of which 92 engaged in R&D activities. Ten companies, 9 R&D managers, and one managing director of different industrial companies were selected. Findings We identified four cases of how R&D subsidiaries incorporate their requirements into global strategies in the context of changes. Four methods of integrating R&D subsidiaries’ strategies with the parent company are explained. Further, we show that global strategy formulation should not be restricted to headquarters, as dilemmas occur within competing departments in the subsidiaries, which negatively impact innovation and performance. Digital transformation suggests the potential of a new subsidiary management model—the “silent headquarters”. Research limitations/implications We failed to discuss how headquarters’ R&D is implemented in strategy formulation. This is because the interview survey was conducted from the perspective of how subsidiary R&D is involved in integrated strategy formulation. Additionally, we did not investigate the actual performance achieved by integrated and non-integrated R&D organisations. Problems faced by subsidiaries in other locations, other departments within the subsidiary country, and the solutions to these problems, should be addressed in future research. Practical implications The practical implications of our findings relate to subsidiary-country relationships, inter-facility competition, and global strategy formulation. Active involvement of subsidiary R&D in strategy formulation, considering local requirements, can enhance subsidiary location advantages. Integrated strategies focused on global customers may overlook subsidiary R&D strengths and hinder innovation due to internal dilemmas and competition. Strengthening subsidiary R&D involvement and considering local context can promote innovation and flexibility beyond meta-national management. The concept of Silent HQ is suggested, reducing duplication and coordination issues through delegation and digital transformation. Social implications The implication was from the findings pertain to global strategy formulation after organisational integration, which was not previously elucidated by the transnational management and meta-national management models. It was clarified the existence of four cases for subsidiary R&D involvement in strategy formulation from the perspective of subsidiary R&D activities, addressing the difficulty of explaining the penetration of single strategy management to subsidiaries through integration alone. We revealed that there are the entire, apparent, moderate, and quiescent integration cases of R&D strategies from the perspectives of global integration strategy and the subsidiary country’s adaptation and that considering subsidiary R&D involvement models in global strategy formulation is important for maximising the performance of R&D subsidiaries in MNCs. Originality/value This study provides useful insight into the importance of centralisation to enhance performance. It addresses the research gap in the global strategy formulation process by R&D subsidiaries. R&D leaders at subsidiary levels strike a balance between global considerations and the host country. This concerns the need for initiative and value proposition to their local customers, combined with the operation of a transnational model. The findings clarify how high-performing subsidiary R&D leaders can engage in parent company strategy formulation.

Early internationalization and success in foreign markets play an important role in both a firm’s growth and its impact on the global economy. We conducted a study on Japanese high-tech startups to investigate the factors that derive early internationalization in firms founded in countries with a large domestic market, despite the absence of strong incentives to operate overseas. Quantitative data were collected from 71 startups and analyzed with PLS-SEM (Partial least squares path modeling). Our result showed that the factors we extracted from the previous studies on the internationalization process in small-size markets would also apply in countries with large domestic markets. In addition, considerations and the types of technology, which we extracted from qualitative research, verified the effect. According to our mediator analysis, an entrepreneur’s international orientation explains certain conditions related to a domestic market that affect a firms’ decision to pursue early internationalization. Our study makes contributions at multiple levels, benefiting entrepreneurs who are considering overseas expansion as well as policymakers who aim to promote early internationalization efforts.

This paper makes a contribution to make clear characteristics of construction project, through the provision of a perspective from fundamental creation process, where principles of academic discussion.

The elements of every aspect of architecture are complicated. There are many stakeholders involved in construction projects, such as clients, tenants, visitors, architects, structural designers and engineers, landscape architects, interior designers, electrical and mechanical engineers, and every role is intricate and complex. For example, an architect must understand (or even take on) the roles of the designer, engineer, coordinator, manager and negotiator, with the interfaces between each role being complex. Then, every project has different conditions, because each project has a different context, site, regulation and policy. At same time, it needs to be understood that the main function of each architecture type is completely different from others. To address this a generalized understanding of architecture design and associated processes is required, which may be applicable to other types of products and services.

The fundamental design process that governs the development of products of all types is of course applicable to the disciplines of architecture and engineering. Principles of creation process apply to both complex products such as buildings and also mass-produced products such as automobiles or cameras.
It is possible to understand that designers make some design-information to create all of products, and important to analyze these design-information to understand the characteristics of those products.
By adopting a design-information view of industries, it is proposed that product structure may be a significant factor in determining the industrial sectors in which firms are more likely to exhibit competitive performance.
The design-information view of industries considers a product as being design-information that is embodied in a particular medium or material. Products comprise physical components, functional elements and interfaces between interacting physical components. A productive resource is considered to be an information asset and the production process is regarded as a system of productive resources. Production or commercial manufacture is then considered as the repeated transfer of design-information from the production process to a material or medium.

There is clearly a difference between mass produced products such as automobiles and large complex one-off projects relating to construction. However, the orientation that is based upon creation process can be seen in such complex product systems too, comparing for example a skyscraper and an automobile, with the design and coordination lead provided by architects for the former, and engineers for the later.
This idea comes from the other academic fields originally, and can make clear the fundamental purpose of creation.

This research paper explores the expression of technological knowledge mobility about design works in the industrial field of architecture projects. Furthermore, the research focuses on design information that is designed by architects and engineers and is based on technological knowledge. This research focus is selected because it represents a typical design process; Japanese technology system tends to be integrated when based on complicated creation process.

The research was conducted using a framework based upon the expression of technological knowledge and responsibility, key elements to make up design information. Strong points and weak points of design team structure are linked with allocation of making drawings, final approval and conclusive responsibility. Finally, this paper tries to develop a description method of the tendency about the relationship among architects and engineers in architecture and construction projects.

Design has significantly affected innovation and the discipline of design management focuses on meanings that it brings about a drastic change in life style of consumers. Although the relationship between design and technology is one of the important issues for the innovation of meanings, there were only a few studies which suggested the comprehensive model that includes design and technology. Verganti proposed the concept of design driven innovation, which regarded a design process of NPD as a research activity, and demonstrated a relationship between the technological research and the design research. In particular, he examined deeply the mechanism of the design research. In order to deepen his discussion, this chapter aims to suggest some propositions and a comprehensive model related to the interaction between the design research and the technological research. The authors utilize the concepts of exploration and exploitation for their framework. It shows that an augmenting of both researches may create effectively radical meanings or technologies and an integration of both researches may create radical meanings and technologies concurrently. In the case study of FPD industry, this chapter examines how some companies create competitive advantages by both researches and the commoditization of technology may cause the transition to the design research from the technological research as source of the competitive advantages. Additionally, the chapter suggests the strategic and organizational issues for conducting the design research and the technological research interactively in the discussion section.

In a corporate organization, when a trouble happens, because it takes too much time to identify the person in charge and to give a full account of the issue, the track of the responsibility can often fade off with time. As for such social circumstances, an ethical standard of the society can be put in danger. The above results from ambiguity in the definition and usage of the concept related to ethics. For instance, corporate ethics sometimes makes it difficult to identify the person in charge. The principle of maximization of shareholders' benefits decreases awareness of the responsibility for the troubles caused by organization. Especially, a person in charge tends to lack the time-base-concept during the period when the derivative influences are assumed. In this article, organization that creates professional ethics will be presented hypothetically based on the previous studies.

The experiment project of the housing production in Kyoto is compared with the existing business tasks based on the difference in the core project tasks. Therefore, the conditions for leading the drop shipment-type wooden housing projects utilizing locally-produced lumbers from an analysis of the subsystems at the experiment project are found out. As a result, the experiment project is enabled to convert into information initiative from physical distribution initiative, and it becomes clear that the role of raw wood market is indispensable for the determination of material information.

This study examines the method for evaluating the strategies of each company whose technology is positioned between the `fluid phase' and `transitional phase' of the Abernathy-Utterback Model, and in particular, discusses the efforts of core human resources who play a key role in the technological strategies, as well as how they are utilized. From this examination, two hypotheses are proposed. i) Interlocking the efforts of multi-performers with company-wide technological strategies may increase the efficiency of implementation. ii) By allowing multi-performers to explore diverse technological directions without interlocking their efforts with company-wide technological strategies, it is possible to establish a foundation for renewed technological strategies. Patents are filed over three hundred thousand in a year, and it is material to evaluate a company objectively. Therefore, many existing researches analyzed for patents. While most of the researches use regression model, they do not cover the patent document information. Patent document information is a huge qualitative data, so it is effective to use the machine learning. Using support vector machine which classified a supervised learning, I conduct the analysis considering the generalization ability and the learning efficiency in multidimensional data.

The patent systems have been expected to provide the appropriability of innovation. Many research papers, however, report patents fault to provide it. Two case studies on inkjet printers and DVD drives describe the patent management scheme, "implicit patent alliance", which provide patent holders with competitive advantage to dominate the markets. In the inkjet printer market, three essential patent holders, Canon, Epson and HP, licensed formally or informally their essential patents only among them, and did not license for other companies. Their patent strategy prevented other companies from entering the market. In the DVD drive market, the standard essential patents were licensed fairly. The expensive patent royalty made it difficult for companies except patent holders to stay in the market. These patent strategies are similar with the tacit collusion of Jay B. Barney, and may called Implicit Patent Alliance.

We compared the history of the past 30 years, transition and present status of construction project delivery methods and contracting system in Japan, China, South Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States. According to the comparison, project delivery methods / regulations in each country is altering in accordance with the changes in risk allocation among owners, architects/designers and contractors. In addition, the alteration affects the domestic construction industry in countries which have accepted the foreign contractors, and its impact is gradually spreading to project delivery methods/ regulations and quality ensuring system in the country. Speaking hypothetically, this large flow has been being strongly related to the ability of the general contractor in each country.

This research has gotten the three primary following results. First, it has been specifically showed that the “semi-open innovation” in case of the consideration of subsidiaries and trade relations would be feasible. Actually, it is able to be a part of concepts of the whole system which includes buyer-supplier relationship such as an automotive industry as we have usually observed. In addition, it is also understood that the product concept creation and market opportunity is effective when R&D process is in the Fuzzy Front-End in the early stages of the semi-open innovation. Finally, we had a successful results of the formation of the theoretically basics in terms of the relationships amongst society, economics and technology.

The aim of this study is to reveal the impact of the fuzzy front end activities on new products success in Korean and Chinese firms. In order to gain insight into the fuzzy front end, we developed a conceptual model, and a structural equation modeling(SEM)was fitted to data from 293 NPD projects in Korean manufacturing firms and 30 Chinese manufacturing companies to test the proposed model. The key driver of Korean and Chinese NPD project success was the intensity of planning before development.
