    Abstract Amines are important compounds found in natural products, pharmaceuticals, and fine chemicals. Therefore, the development of elegant, environmentally friendly, and simple synthetic methods is desirable. Recently, the borrowing‐hydrogen (BH) strategy has received considerable attention for C−N bond formations because of its high atomic efficiency and the absence of toxic waste generation. Researchers have recently reported that the use of N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands with strong electron‐donating properties and protic solvents can increase the catalytic activity in the BH strategy. Therefore, herein, we focused on the versatility of the synthetic methods, such as a synthetic system that allows simple synthesis, operates at low reaction temperatures, and involves the use of effective solvent simultaneously. The catalyzed N‐alkylation of alcohols and amines in protic solvents under mild conditions was investigated using simple NHC complexes developed by our group. We achieved the synthesis of various alkylamines under mild conditions, such as 40–60 °C, using iridium complexes comprising NHC ligands with simple structures and protic solvents such as 2,2,2‐trifluoroethanol and 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexafluoroisopropanol.

    Long-term hydrogen production from a methanol–water solution was achieved by developing a new reaction system employing a homogeneous iridium catalyst bearing a bipyridonate-type functional ligand. By optimizing the methanol:water ratio of the reaction solution, the efficiency of hydrogen production was greatly improved in relation to that reported in our previous studies. Additionally, the effect of the scale of reaction was investigated. It was found that a small-scale reaction led to a longer lifetime of the iridium catalyst, accomplishing long-term continuous hydrogen production at a constant rate for over 500 h. Furthermore, procedures for catalyst reuse were studied. After hydrogen production for 400 h, all volatiles in the reaction system were removed under vacuum. This simple procedure is highly effective for the reactivation and reuse of the catalyst. Finally, hydrogen production (13.7 L, 562 mmol) from methanol (12.3 mL, 303 mmol) and water (5.46 mL, 303 mmol), in a continuous reaction for 800 h, was achieved.

    2-Methylquinoxaline derivatives are widely used as intermediates in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, natural products, and dyes; however, their syntheses usually require excess reagents, making them environmentally burdensome. Meanwhile, glycerol can be sustainably obtained in large quantities as a by-product in the production of biodiesel fuel using waste oil as a raw material. Thus, it is worthwhile to develop a new catalytic system that utilizes glycerol as a C3 source. In this study, an efficient catalytic system was developed to obtain 2-methylquinoxaline derivatives from glycerol and 1,2-phenylenediamines. This system is beneficial because it is environmentally friendly and has excellent atom efficiency.

    A new catalytic system has been developed for hydrogen production from various monosaccharides, mainly glucose, as a starting material under reflux conditions in water in the presence of a water-soluble dicationic iridium complex bearing a functional bipyridine ligand. For example, the reaction of D-glucose in water under reflux for 20 h in the presence of [Cp*Ir(6,6′-dihydroxy-2,2′-bipyridine)(H2O)][OTf]2 (1.0 mol %) (Cp*: pentamethylcyclopentadienyl, OTf: trifluoromethanesulfonate) resulted in the production of hydrogen gas in 95% yield. In the present catalytic reaction, it was experimentally suggested that dehydrogenation of the alcoholic moiety at 1-position of glucose proceeded.

    Abstract A new catalytic system for the N‐monoalkylation of aqueous ammonia with a variety of alcohols was developed. Water‐soluble dicationic complexes of iridium bearing N‐heterocyclic carbene and diammine ligands exhibited high catalytic activity for this type of reaction on the basis of hydrogen‐transfer processes without generating harmful or wasteful byproducts. Various primary amines were efficiently synthesized by using safe, inexpensive, and easily handled aqueous ammonia as a nitrogen source. For example, the reaction of 1‐(4‐methylphenyl)ethanol with aqueous ammonia in the presence of a water‐soluble N‐heterocyclic carbene complex of iridium at 150 °C for 40 h gave 1‐(4‐methylphenyl)ethylamine in 83 % yield.
