In this paper, we analyzed, concerning both angles and time responsibility, the data obtained in the experiment of the previous report about the back-of-hand electrical muscle stimulation (BoHEMS), adding a more detailed anatomical discussion. The analysis for the angles confirmed that the BoHEMS could efficiently flex fingers at only the MP joint, including the index finger, which was challenging to flex so far. Also, each finger flexed without a flexion around the PIP joint, which always occurs using EMS at the forearm, which many HCI researchers have often used for finger flexion. As for the time responsibility, the BoHEMS has a similar one as the conventional forearm EMS. We conclude that the BoHEMS is helpful for application for activities of daily living because of the selective MP joint flexion, which is of great importance for those. However, since the daily movement of the finger is not such simple, the flexor and extensor muscle stimulations in the forearm are needed to flex PIP joints in cooperation. Still, it is even difficult to flex the PIP joint of the index finger from the forearm; therefore, it is necessary to tackle it as a significant issue in the future.

This study proposes a new haptic transducer capable of producing strong vibrations and constant skin stretch using repulsive permanent magnets and a small coil. The repulsive magnet configuration generates a concentrating leakage magnetic flux on the side surface of the magnets directing perpendicular to the surface. Both the magnets and the coils are attached to the skin to generate constant force as well as vibration. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we fabricated and evaluated a prototype. As a result, it was found that the proposed method is able to present vibrations with larger amplitudes than existing methods. It was also suggested that the proposed method is superior to the existing method in representing the shape and texture of virtual objects.

We found that an illusory force of the finger was induced in flexion and extension direction by applying electrical stimulation to the proximal phalanx of the finger of the palm and dorsal sides. In this paper, we investigated illusory force directions when changing the polarity of electrical stimulation and finger posture. The force sensation was also evaluated quantitatively under conditions in which the largest extension and flexion force illusions were induced. As a result, this force illusion had a relatively large dependency on the finger posture. We found that our approach could induce force sensation from 1 N to 2 N in both directions.

Whether it is possible to induce stronger and steady kinesthetic illusions by multi-point vibratory stimulation was investigated. We placed seven vibrators on the arm and presented a total of 127 (27 - 1) vibration patterns by turning each vibrator on and off, and asked participants to evaluate the illusion subjectively. The mean angular velocity and the mean subjective evaluation value increased significantly with the number of actuated vibrators. However, the illusion’s angular velocity did not increase dramatically. In short, the proposed method was effective for inducing vivid illusions steadily.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether stimulation of the proprioceptors in the arm during active movement can affect not only the proprioception of the arm but also the perception of the hand-held object. If it is possible to control the perception of a hand-held object through stimulation to the body, it can be applied to virtual-reality interfaces and controllers, which can be used in a wide range of situations. In the experiment, participants were given a context in which they grasped an object and actively moved. Proprioceptive stimulation was applied to participants using vibration and skin stretch based on the kinesthetic illusion. They were asked to evaluate the perception of the object and the arm. Consequently, it was found that the perception of not only the arm but also the hand-held object could be changed, although there were large individual differences.

In the present virtual reality systems, because users must move their physical body, there are problems in safety, cost and accessibility. In order to solve these problems, we have proposed a system that creates sense of movement without physical movement of user’s body using kinesthetic illusion induced by tendon vibration. In this paper, we conducted a psychological experiment to evaluate operability, body ownership and agency when using the proposed system. The results suggested that the use of tendon vibration may contribute to the improvement of body ownership, although it was not statistically significant. Also, there was a possibility that agency was lowered by tendon vibration.

Presenting kinesthetic sensation usually requires a large space so as to avoid users colliding with objects or other users. One way to tackle this issue to use kinesthetic illusion, which is a way of presenting kinesthetic sensation without physical motion. However, realizing dynamic motion and fast movement remains difficult. Considering that multiple synergist muscles are usually involved in a movement, stimulating multiple synergist muscles might enhance the illusion. Thus, we investigated whether multi-point vibratory stimulation to multiple synergist muscles enhances induced kinesthetic illusions. We found that stimulating multiple synergist muscles created more vivid illusions. Additionally, we found that our method was effective for inducing steady illusions, but not for rapid illusions. We also calculated the contribution of each proposed stimulation point to the illusion.
