    Abstract This study focused on the use of molten oxide electrolysis (MOE) as a low-cost, clean, continuous separation method suitable for incorporation into actual steelmaking processes. We discussed interfacial behavior from molten iron to slag by anodic polarization of the copper-containing carbon-saturated molten iron (metal phase)–molten oxide (slag phase) interface and investigate the operating mechanism of MOE. The basic constant potential electrolysis between the metal phase (Fe-10 wt% Cu-5.0 wt% C) and slag phase (27 wt% CaO-27 wt% SiO2-45 wt% Al2O3-1.0 wt% CaS) by maintaining 1–2 V vs. Pt at 1773 K in an Ar atmosphere is described. When polarized, a high concentration of dispersed Cu-rich phase was detected locally near the metal–slag interface but not in the phase center of the metal. At the metal–slag interface, the energies of the Fe-rich and Cu-rich phase–slag interfaces decreased due to electric capillarity, and the Cu-rich phase distributed near the interface.

    Photoluminescence (PL) emission from anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) formed by etidronic acid anodizing was investigated via fluorescence spectroscopy. Highly pure aluminum plates were anodized in an etidronic acid solution under various operating conditions. PL emission from the typical AAO film was identified with an approximately 250–275-nm range in excitation and a 375–450-nm range in emission, and this distribution was greatly different from the AAO film formed by typical carboxylic acid treatment. The PL intensity increased with the decrease of the concentration of etidronic acid solution. The intensity also increased with anodizing time and subsequent thermal treatment, whereas excess anodizing and high temperature treatment caused an intensity decrease. The AAO film consisted of an outer oxide containing incorporated etidronate anions and a thin honeycomb inner oxide without anions, and the oxygen vacancy localized in the AAO film and anion distribution strongly affected the PL intensity. The appropriate operating condition through anodizing in 0.05 M etidronic acid for 40 h and subsequent thermal treatment at 773 K for 2 h caused the maximum enhancement of the PL emission.

    In order to produce metals directly from the oxides, molten CaO-CaCl2 mixture offers a strong reducing environment. CaO in CaCl2 melt electrochemically decomposes into metallic Ca and O2- by applying a certain voltage larger than the theoretical decomposition voltage of CaO. Ca, deposited on cathode and dissolved in the melt, can work as strong reductant. Various metals such as Ti can be produced directly from their stable oxides. Although this calciothermic reduction forms CaO as by-product close to the cathode, CaO dissolves in CaCl2 melt and decomposes again by electrolysis. This OS process could be applied to solid, liquid and gaseous oxides. By applying the sulfides, good quality of metal is realized because they do not form solid solution of sulfur.

    A new metallurgical process via sulfide is proposed: a sulfide is produced at a high temperature from its metallic oxide using gaseous CS2, and this sulfide is electrochemically reduced to its metallic state using molten salt. This combined process via sulfide is effective to obtain high purity of metallic powder, even if the metal in its oxide is strongly combined with oxygen. For example, it is not easy to reduce stable oxide TiO2, and only Ca can remove oxygen to form α-Ti. However, a fairly large amount of oxygen remains as Ti–O solid solution. Because the solubility of S in Ti is very small, this proposal was examined experimentally both on the conversion of TiO2 to TiS2 and on the successive reduction of TiS2 to Ti. TiO2 powder was exposed to CS2 gas flow at 1073 K, and the conversion to TiS2 was confirmed. TiS2 could be reduced to Ti powder either by calciothermic reduction or electrolysis in a CaCl2 melt. By Ca reduction at 1133 K in CaCl2 melt, sulfur concentration decreased to 0.03 mass%S when the amount greater than twice the stoichiometric calcium amount is added. By electrochemical reduction at 1173 K in CaCl2–CaS melt, S concentration significantly decreased to 0.01 mass%S when four times larger amount of electric charge was supplied.

    A new numerical model was successfully developed for analyzing packed bed structures containing non-spherical solids such as cokes and the high-temperature melt trickle flow characteristics of such beds. This enables the direct three-dimensional analysis of packed beds that are difficult to visualize in experimental tests. The sophisticated smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method can track the motion of liquids without discriminating between continuous and dispersed phases. Meanwhile, the advanced discrete element method (DEM) is employed as a highly-accurate method for solid-particle motion simulation. It is a method using a contact force model that is expanded to capture the motion of 3-dimensionaly freely shaped rigid bodies. We used the boundary for the packed bed configured with non-spherical solids to carry out a trickle flow simulation. Based on this model, we carried out the largescale simulations, and perform case studies and other studies of statistical processing, and investigate the effects of both physical properties and packed bed formed from various types of non-spherical cokes.

    Preferential decomposition of CO2 gas to CO gas was examined by using a combination of CaCl2-CaO melt as a reaction media and ZrO2-8mol% Y2O3 solid-state electrolyte as anode. The conversion ratio of CO2 to CO became larger at the higher temperature, and approached the maximum (88.2%) at 1273 K. The highest CO concentration was generated at cell voltage of 2.55 V, which is close to theoretical decomposition voltage of CaO. Therefore, in addition to calciothermic reaction between precipitated Ca and CO2 gas bubbles, CO2 decomposes preferentially via the decomposition reaction of carbonate ions. Namely CO2 gas dissolves to form CO3 2- under coexistence of CaO in the melt, CO3 2- precipitates carbon or CO gas bubbles on the cathode, and a part of carbon reacts with the blown CO2 gas to form CO. CO gas is used as an effective fuel with easy handling in steel plants.

    A new metallurgical process via titanium sulfide from ilmenite is proposed and experimentally approved: It consists of several stages; 1) The ilmenite ore is exposed to gaseous CS2 to selectively sulfurize to FeS, which is wet-chemically removed. 2) The residual oxide is again exposed to CS2 to form TiS2. 3) TiS2 is electrochemically reduced to metallic Ti using molten CaCl2-CaS as an application of OS process. TiFeO3 was exposed to Ar-CS2 mixed gas flow at 1173 K to form the mixture of FeS+TiO2. FeS was easily separated by immersing in H2SO4 solution at 313 K. After recovery of TiO2, it was converted completely to TiS2 by the second sulfurization with CS2. TiS2 could be reduced to Ti powder by calciothermic reduction and simulteneous electrolysis in a CaS-CaCl2 melt for about 6 hours at 1173 K and 3.0 V. The impurity decreased to a low level such as 0.021 mass%S due to very small solubility of S in a-Ti. However, 1.06 mass%O remained because of wide solubility of oxygen in a-Ti and water contamination in initial CaCl2.

    We examined to trace the behavior of the molten high-temperature metal as a dispersed phase in detail in various systems. For the first time, here we reported the time change of electrode surface on the sub-millisecond/micrometre scale in molten LiCl-KCl-CaCl2 at 823 K in Ar atmosphere. When the potential was applied, liquid Ca-Li alloy droplets grew on the electrode, and the black colloidal metal moved on the electrode surface to form a network structure. The attraction, which operates on the interface between the different phases is explicitly defined as London dispersion force using the Fowkes theoretical model, and the interfacial tension can be calculated using the sum of the attraction magnitudes corresponding to the surrounding via computationa fluid dynamics simulation (SPH). These results will provide important information about the microscale mixing action near the electrode, and accelerate the development of metallothermic reduction of oxides.

    In the thermic reduction of oxide XOx-1(s)(X = Ti, Zr, or difficult reducibility metals) using electrodeposited liquid metal (Me = Ca, Li, or their alloys), the presence of dissolved Me at the vicinity of the cathode is essential, when the oxide is placed close to the cathode. To understand the transient behavior of Me droplets in the molten salt bath, the interface between the electrodeposited phase and the bath system was observed in-situ using a high-speed digital microscope. Further, the transient behaviors of multi-fluid system were investigated using the SPH model. We found that the droplets on the electrode are slightly flattened, when the colloidal Me content decreases. This mechanism indicates that the heterogeneous distribution of the colloidal Me may be due to the local Me solubility in the electrolyte.

    The complex oxide consisting of stable oxide MO and CaO with crystalline infhomonenity was reduced in the molten CaCl2 to form a specific appearance of metallic crystal. Because the amount of bar-like Nb was preferencially produced from CaxMyOz, the dendritic Nb is formed via the complex oxide, even when starting from Nb2O5. The morphology depends on the sequence of reduction. New production process of metallic Ti is proposed using TiS2: When TiS2 is reduced in CaCl2-CaS molten salt, oxygen contamination should be free. As well as CaO in OS process, CaS is electrochemically decomposed to Ca and it reacts with TiS2 to form metallic Ti. Resultantly it contained only 0.015mass%S. By calciothermic reduction in a canned CaCl2 molten salt without electrolysis, 0.26mass%S in Ti was achieved from TiS2. The residual oxygen in the both reactions were related with the particle surface.

    This work proposes that water lens consists of only a transparent sheet and water, and that it concentrates the solar light and heat. Both calculation and experiments confirmed that a half-cylindrical lens could accumulate the light. Analytical equation describing the lens shape was given and solved numerically. The refraction and ray tracing were evaluated for the perpendicular and slant irradiations. It is predicted that there exists the optimal tension for an amount of filled water in the sheet, and that the maximum concentration ratio exceeds, for example, 75 if the width of sheet is fixed at 1m. The concentration effects for the slant ray were also estimated to simulate the sunrise and sunset. These results contribute to the system design of flexible lens corresponding to the solar dairy movement.

    製鉄プロセスは、環境負荷が大きいため、地球環境問題や地域との共生の必要性から大きな転換期にある。現在、操業効率化のために原料の新配置法や高反応性原料の使用が模索されているが、本研究では、莫大な労力とコストをかけられ経験的に決定されているプロセス操作設計を新たなコンピュータシミュレーション技術により根本的に見直すことに着眼した。 高炉内では、充填層中で原料である焼結鉱が融解する固液共存領域の制御が、操業安定性に大きく影響するため、その挙動把握が重要であると考えた。個々の粒子から構成される充填層は、固気液相が混在しかつ空間的に不均一な運動形態をとり、従来の格子法では空間解像度の向上が困難であった。本研究では、高炉内の離散的現象の性格を反映した記述を行う手法として、粒子法であるDEMとMPS法、および数値流体力学法(CFD)をカップリングする方法を発展させた。粒子群単位の性質を構造格子に反映する方法を提案し、大規模な領域を計算対象とすることで従来にない大規模系を取り扱うことのできる3次元固気液流れ解析を行うことを可能とした。また、本モデルに粒子単位での熱移動、物質移動方程式を組み込むことで、高炉を対象としたモデル解析による数値実験を可能とした。特に、現在低炭素化を指向して、コークスの反応性の変化による鉱石の還元速度について議論がなされているが、本モデルは世界で初めて粒子配置の最適化を検討する数値モデルであり、伝熱、流体の流動、物質移動を考慮した最適化の提案を行った。
