    Abstract This article provides novel data involving reduced wh-questions in Dagara. The language exhibits some important properties, among which are the availability of the movement and the in-situ option for wh-phrases in wh-questions and the obligatory presence of the focus marker accompanying remnant wh-phrases. We propose and argue for an analysis in terms of overt movement of wh-phrases and ellipsis of a clausal constituent à la what has been called sluicing. We also observe that reduced questions in Dagara exhibit island repair effects. As a theoretical consequence, we point out that they weaken one of the supporting arguments for the so-called in-situ analysis of sluiced clauses.

    Abstract Among the proposals for multiple sluicing in Mandarin Chinese is what we call the multi-clausal analysis, which posits that it involves conjoined single wh-questions. This paper aims to examine the analysis through the possibility of pair-list interpretation for multiply sluiced clauses. The conclusion drawn is that the multiclausal analysis alone is not sufficient to fully explicate the relevant phenomenon.

    Abstract This article aims to provide new and solid evidence for the observation made in the previous literature that antecedent containment needs to be resolved in overt syntax in cases of antecedent contained deletion in Japanese. The evidence is new in the sense that it is based on argument ellipsis, which the recent literature has convincingly shown to be available in Japanese, rather than verb-stranding VP-ellipsis, the existence of which has been debated. It is shown how to construct relevant data using elliptic clausal arguments in the hope that similar research will be conducted with data from other languages where argument ellipsis is assumed to be available. It is argued that cases of antecedent-contained argument ellipsis in Japanese can be accounted for by the PF deletion analysis or the derivational copying analysis, but not by the LF copying analysis that posits that copying applies at the very end of the LF derivation.

    Abstract This paper provides a detailed description of reduced embedded questions in Chakhar Mongolian and proposes to analyze them in terms of so-called pseudo-sluicing. It has been noted in the literature that the comparable construction in Khalkha Mongolian does not exhibit the so-called case-matching effect, a phenomenon in which the case of a remnant interrogative phrase matches that of its correlate in the preceding context. We show that it also holds in Chakhar Mongolian. We argue that reduced embedded questions in the language have a pseudo-sluicing structure, which straightforwardly accounts for the absence of the relevant effect. Our proposal is supported by the appearance of a copula and pronominal subjects in those reduced questions and by the fact that reduced questions can be pragmatically controlled.

    <title>Abstract</title>The present article is concerned with two important observations about argument ellipsis. One is that it may apply to arguments that do not enter into agreement relationship with functional categories but not to those that do; the other is that extraction out of elided arguments is possible in Japanese. In order to account for these properties, I adopt the theory of derivational ellipsis, according to which elliptic constituents are marked as such as early as in the syntactic component, and the hypothesis that <italic>v</italic>, V, and an internal argument can be combined in different ways in different languages. The proposed analysis does not only account for the relevant facts about argument ellipsis in Japanese, but also extends to other languages that exhibit slightly different behaviors with regard to null arguments.

    2021年度は、当初の計画では、中国語のスルーシング構文及び「是 (shi)」が生じる焦点化構文の文献調査を行い、先行研究で提示されてきた一般化を検証することを計画していた。これに従い、中国語のスルーシング構文と「是 (shi)」が生じる焦点化構文、及び類似した構文として「把 (ba)」と「被 (bei)」が生じる構文について文献調査を行った。 本研究にとって、上述の焦点辞としての「是 (shi)」、及び統語的に類似していると思われる「把 (ba)」と「被 (bei)」が主要部移動をうけるのかどうかが重要になる。2021年度は、これらが生じる構文がどのような特徴を持つのかを選考文献に基づき確認をした。次の段階では、それら３つの要素が直接後続する要素と構成素を形成するかどうかを調査することが必要となり、どのような統語的テストを行うべきか、そのようなテストが中国語で実行可能かどうかなどを考察した。これは2022年度に継続する。 また、中国語の「是 (shi)」が生じる焦点化構文との対比という観点から、西アフリカで話されるダガラ語の焦点化構文を考察した。先行研究により、ダガラ語の焦点化構文では、中国語では焦点主要部が焦点要素に先行するのに対して、焦点主要部が焦点要素に後続することがわかっている。この言語間の違いを焦点主要部の移動の有無、そして最終的にはラベリングの相違により説明することができないかも継続して調査する。

    2021年は、日本語母語話者を対象に、目的語と動詞の一致（目的語に付く単複のマーカーとそれに対応する動詞接尾辞）を持つ準日本語か、目的語の数（単複）のみを表すマーカーを持つ準日本語のどちらかを学習させ、その後でそれぞれの準日本語における空項をどのように解釈するかを調査する実験を行った。結果、2通りの可能な解釈--厳密な同一性とゆるやかな同一性--のうち、厳密な同一性の解釈において有意差がみられた。目的語と動詞の一致を学習した実験参加者の方がゆるやかな同一性の解釈を容認しやすかった。この結果は、一致を学習した影響で、空項を空代名詞のように解釈している可能性を示唆し、本研究の仮説と矛盾しない。しかし、ゆるやかな同一性の解釈において2グループで差がみられなかったため、2022年度は実験刺激を改善し、日本語話者とスペイン語話者でさらに実験を進める予定である。2021年度の実験結果については、国際学会で口頭発表を行った(International Conference on Theoretical East Asian Psycholinguistics 採択率 21.5%)。 <BR> また、本研究が基にしている統語理論の検討として、日本語のコーパスにおける空項の分布を調査した。日本語の一人称空目的語は、その文脈中に先行詞がある場合のみ生起できると提案されている (髙橋 2020)。コーパスを用いてこの仮説を定量的に検証するため、空項の人称と先行詞の位置についてアノテーションを行った結果、一人称空目的語は他の人称や主語位置の空項と比較して顕著に頻度が低く、その先行詞の分布にも制限があることがわかった。研究者の内省によらない自然な言語データにおいても一人称空目的語は生起に制限があることが確認された。これらの結果については、国内学会でポスター発表を行った（日本言語学会第163回大会）。

    コロナ禍のため、予定していた国際学会への参加は全くできなかった。 しかし、研究代表者（中本武志）の論文は２本完成し、一報は査読中で、もう一報は投稿準備中である。 査読中の論文は日本語の「の」と中国語の“的”の振る舞いの違いをコードスイッチングの面から明らかにしたものである。日本語の「の」は文の骨格が日本語の場合にのみ現れるが、中国語の“的”は文の骨格が中国語であっても日本語であっても良く、その比率はほぼ半々であった。これは新しい発見である。 さらに理論的にも、この事実は日本語の「の」が格助詞であり、文の核となる要素に依存するのに対し、中国語の“的”は形態素と形態素を結ぶ役割を果たすという違いに還元できる。これは形態素分類の４-Mモデルを支持すると同時に、生成統語論における句構造標識を用いることにより、さらに説明力が増すことを示した。 二本目の論文では、SVO言語とSOV言語のコードスイッチングで「I want to be ゴールキーパーになりたい」のような、SVOV構造を持つかなり特殊な構文を扱った。一つの目的語を二つの（ほぼ同義の）動詞が共有するという現象は、従来の統語理論では説明が難しい。しかし、作業場を拡張することにより、mergeの概念を変更せず、強いミニマリストの仮説を維持したまま、構成素共有の構造を説明することができた。さらにこの構造は関係節にも適用が可能であることを示した。すなわち、データと理論の両面で、新規性のある研究であると言える。

    2019年度は、研究目的である言語の経済性条件の検証に関して、以下の２つのことを行なった。 <BR> [1] 最大削除条件について、中国語でも観察されるかどうかを調査した。関連する文献の調査、データの作成や分析を行なった。その結果、中国語の動詞句省略と項省略の組み合わせでは、最大削除条件の効果が観察されることがわかった。つまり、同じ内容の関節疑問文に動詞句省略と項省略を適用した場合、前者は容認可能な文となるのに対して、後者は容認度が低い文になることがわかった。これは管見の限り、これまで観察されたことのない言語事実であり、また研究が進んでいる英語とは類型論的に異なる中国語で、かつ異なる省略操作の組み合わせでも当該効果が観察されるということは意義のある観察と言うことができる。これまでのところパイロット的な調査の段階で、本格的な調査と分析は2020年度に行う予定である。また、類型論的に上記の言語とは異なるダガラ語とバスク語でも当該効果が見られるかを調査するため、まずは関係する構文の調査を始めた。 <BR> [2] 最小ステップ条件については、１つの文に２つの数量詞が含まれるデータを作成する必要があり、まずは関連するデータの作成とそのための文献調査と検討を行った。中国語に関する先行文献には信頼できるデータに基づいた観察がなかなか発見できず、手探りの状態でデータ作成に着手した。その結果、中国語でも省略が適用した文は先行文との間で数量詞の作用域解釈において平行性が観察されることがわかった。今年度は次のステップとして、数量詞の作用域解釈で両義性があるデータを作成し、最小ステップ条件の効果の有無を検証する予定である。

    ロマンス語族言語などで観察される人称格制約の効果が日本語にも観察されるかどうかを検証した。関連する例文、例えば「友梨奈が秋元先生に私を推薦したそうだ。友香も {彼に/[e]} {私を/[e]} 推薦したらしい。」などにおいて、後続文の関節目的語と直接目的語のいずれもがゼロ形である場合でも容認度の低下が見られないという結果を得た。これにより、日本語には当該効果が観察されないという結論に至った。この観察は、人称格制約を形態論的条件とみなす立場と統語論的条件とみなす立場のいずれにおいても説明されうることを確認した。

    日本語と同様の主語・目的語の省略が観察されるか否かという観点から、トルコ語、中国語、バスク語など空主語・空目的語を許す言語を調査した。日本語と同様に主語と目的語いずれの省略も許す言語がある一方で、いずれの省略も許さない言語や目的語の省略は許すが主語の省略は許さない言語が存在することがわかった。この調査により、観察された言語間の相違は一致現象の有無と関係があることが論じられた。

    自然言語に観察される省略現象のうち間接疑問縮約と項省略に焦点を当て、文献調査やインフォーマント調査によりそれらを比較統語論的に研究した。間接疑問縮約では、wh疑問文の形成が英語とは異なる日本語を中心に考察し、先行詞との対比を伴う間接疑問縮約構文が今後の研究に重要であるとの結論を得た。項省略では、自由語順現象との相関を複数の言語を比較することによって検証し、その相関は部分的であるという結果を得た。

    本研究プロジェクトは日本語の統語分析と言語獲得研究を通して一般言語理論に貢献し、同時に日本語の類型的特徴について説明を与えることを目的とします。

  2. 言語の普遍性及び多様性を司る生得的研究：日本語獲得に基づく実証的研究

    現代言語理論では、母語獲得は生後取り込まれる言語経験とヒトに遺伝により生得的に与えられた言語獲得機構との相互作用により達成されると仮定されている。この言語獲得機構は、①全ての言語が満たすべき普遍的制約と②可能な言語間変異を定める制約からなると考えられているが、これらの制約の存在に関する母語獲得からの検討はこれまで主に欧米の言語を対象とした研究に限られている。 本共同研究プロジェクトでは、詳細な記述に基づいた言語理論研究に立脚して日本語の獲得過程を分析することにより、これらの制約の存在に対する新たな視点からの検討を行う。具体的には、心理実験による実証的研究、および発話分析による記述的研究の両手法を用いて、日本語における格（特に主格の誤用）、複合名詞句の構造や自動詞・他動詞、使役などの（複合）述部の構造、ならびに移動現象や削除現象に関する知識の獲得過程を明らかにし、日本語獲得から言語獲得理論へ、さらに言語理論への貢献を目指す。
