Abstract Asianism has often been discussed in Anglophone literature as rhetoric used to justify Japan’s imperial expansion. Yet both the genesis of the concept prior to World War II and its evolution in the post-World War II era have received less attention. This chapter examines how shifting conceptions of Asianism have influenced Japan’s foreign policy stance and international cooperation development agenda. By tracing the historical roots, development and diffusion of Asianism from its origins in early Meiji Japan to present, the chapter shows how Asianism, though its influence has declined over time, has endured in the post-war era through the concept of Asian regionalism.

Abstract Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. This chapter describes the historical development of SDG4 by tracing the history of three fundamental approaches to international education development underlying the goal: education for peace, education as a human right and education for socio-economic development. The approaches are then used to frame discussion of three prominent academic debates and perspectives in research in educational development: (1) the external and internal efficiency of education; (2) “education for development”, “educational development” and “education and development” and (3) dependency theoryand modernization theory. SDG4 is then considered within the framework of these approaches and perspectives. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the challenges and possible solutions for the realization of SDG4.

海外の研究協力機関へ,2024年度に2人の派遣が具体化すると同時に、ドイツとアメリカの研究協力機関との間でサマープログラムの開催形式、時期、滞在に伴うビザ発給、オーバーヘッド費用の決定を行い、ほぼ具体的な枠組みが完成した。他方で、ドイツのイェナ大学との間で日本側の若手研究者の原則全員参加による2024年サマーキャンプ計画も決定された。ドイツとギリシャに滞在し、和解学の包括的な視座を、地中海地域の専門的な知見を交えて、東アジアとの比較を念頭に共に考えるにふさわしい企画となるであろう。今後の計画を建てることに専念したが、2023年度中に、すでに実現した活動としては以下のものがある。プログラムのキックアウトの一環として2023年1月27・28日にイェナ大学のマーティン・レイナー教授と、イェナ和解学センターのローラ・ヴィラヌエバ研究員を招聘してワークショップを行った。プロジェクト参加の若手研究者がそれぞれの研究テーマを紹介しコメントを受領するとともに、上記両氏から和解学のコンセプトを報告・討論が行われた。2月8日にも、若手研究者5名の研究発表を行い、分担者と質疑応答におよんだ。専門分野の班としてグローバルヒストリー、哲学・心理、安全保障と人権、国際教育、ジェンダー・エスニシティの5つの班を設けて、5名の報告者がそれぞれの研究テーマと、上記5班の主題との関連、国際的な和解について発表した。 2023年度の夏も、準備の一環として英文ジャーナル投稿を目標として、本プロジェクトの採択を前提に合宿形式でワークショップを開催した。この延長に若手研究者コミュニティの育成に努め、その延長線上に若手の研究コミュニティーをスラック上に設けて活動中である。プロジェクト内に5つの専門班を設け、それぞれで輪読、研究発表を行いながら、全体会議と専門班の活動を有機的に連関させ、英語での発信力の育成に努めている。
