Abstract In 2024, a failed supernova (SN) candidate, M31-2014-DS1, was reported in the Andromeda galaxy (M31), located at a distance of approximately 770 kpc. In this Letter, we search for neutrinos from this failed SN using data from Super-Kamiokande (SK). Based on the estimated time of black hole formation inferred from optical and infrared observations, we define a search window for neutrino events in the SK data. Using this window, we develop a dedicated analysis method for failed SNe and apply it to M31-2014-DS1, by conducting a cluster search using the timing and energy information of candidate events. No significant neutrino excess is observed within the search region. Consequently, we place an upper limit on the time-integrated electron antineutrino luminosity from M31-2014-DS1 and discuss its implications for various failed SN models and their neutrino emission characteristics. Despite the 18 MeV threshold adopted to suppress backgrounds, the search remains sufficiently sensitive to constrain the Shen-TM1 equation of state, in a more optimistic emission scenario with progenitor stars of 40 M and relatively high mean electron-antineutrino energies of about 23.2 MeV, yielding a 90% confidence level upper limit of 1.76 × 10 53 erg on the time-integrated electron antineutrino luminosity, moderately above the expected value of 1.35 × 10 53 erg.

We investigate neutrino signals associated with black hole formation resulting from the gravitational collapse of massive stars, motivated by the candidate failed supernova M31-2014-DS1 in the Andromeda Galaxy (M31). By compiling numerical simulation results for stellar collapse, we predict the expected neutrino emission and compare these predictions with observational limits from Super-Kamiokande (SK). The simulations reveal a characteristic precursor signal consisting of a short, intense burst whose average neutrino energy rises rapidly and then ceases abruptly once the black hole forms. We examine several nuclear equations of state, specifically the Lattimer & Swesty, Shen, Togashi, and SFHo models, to evaluate how the emission depends on neutron-star properties and nuclear-physics uncertainties. Comparison of the predicted event counts with SK’s non-detection of neutrinos coincident with M31-2014-DS1 already rules out part of the model space and highlights the sensitivity of current neutrino detectors to both progenitor mass and the EOS. These findings demonstrate the capability of neutrino astronomy to probe core collapse and black hole formation in failed supernova scenarios.

We report the first measurement of neutron capture multiplicity in neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielasticlike interactions at the gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande detector using the T2K neutrino beam, which has a peak energy of about 0.6 GeV. A total of 30 neutral-current quasielasticlike event candidates were selected from T2K data corresponding to an exposure of 1.76×1020 protons on target. The γ ray signals resulting from neutron captures were identified using a neural network. The flux-averaged mean neutron capture multiplicity was measured to be 1.37±0.33 (stat.)−0.27+0.17 (syst.), which is compatible within 2.3 sigma than predictions obtained using our nominal simulation. We discuss potential sources of systematic uncertainty in the prediction and demonstrate that a significant portion of this discrepancy arises from the modeling of hadron-nucleus interactions in the detector medium.

Abstract The D-Egg, an acronym for “Dual optical sensors in an Ellipsoid Glass for Gen2,” is one of the optical modules designed for future extensions of the IceCube experiment at the South Pole. The D-Egg has an elongated-sphere shape to maximize the photon-sensitive effective area while maintaining a narrow diameter to reduce the cost and the time needed for drilling of the deployment holes in the glacial ice for the optical modules at depths up to 2700 m. The D-Egg design is utilized for the IceCube Upgrade, the next stage of the IceCube project also known as IceCube-Gen2 Phase 1, where nearly half of the optical sensors to be deployed are D-Eggs. With two 8-inch high-quantum efficiency photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) per module, D-Eggs offer an increased effective area while retaining the successful design of the IceCube digital optical module (DOM). The convolution of the wavelength-dependent effective area and the Cherenkov emission spectrum provides an effective photodetection sensitivity that is 2.8 times larger than that of IceCube DOMs. The signal of each of the two PMTs is digitized using ultra-low-power 14-bit analog-to-digital converters with a sampling frequency of 240 MSPS, enabling a flexible event triggering, as well as seamless and lossless event recording of single-photon signals to multi-photons exceeding 200 photoelectrons within 10 ns. Mass production of D-Eggs has been completed, with 277 out of the 310 D-Eggs produced to be used in the IceCube Upgrade. In this paper, we report the design of the D-Eggs, as well as the sensitivity and the single to multi-photon detection performance of mass-produced D-Eggs measured in a laboratory using the built-in data acquisition system in each D-Egg optical sensor module.

Abstract
Muon beam monitoring is indispensable for indirectly monitoring accelerator-produced neutrino beams in real time. Though Si photodiodes and ionization chambers have been successfully used as muon monitors at the T2K experiment, sensors that are more radiation tolerant are desired for future operation. We have investigated the electron-multiplier tube (EMT) as a new sensor for muon monitoring. Secondary electrons produced by the passage of muons at dynodes are multiplied in the tube and produce signal. Two prototype detectors were installed at the T2K muon monitor location, and various EMT properties were studied based on in situ data taken with the T2K muon beam. The signal size is as expected based on calculation, and the EMTs show a sufficiently fast time response for bunch-by-bunch beam monitoring. The spill-by-spill intensity resolution is 0.4%, better than the required value (1%). Signal linearity within $\pm$1% is achieved at proton beam powers up to 460 kW (with +250 kA focusing horn operation). A gradual signal decrease was observed during the initial exposure, due to the stabilization of dynode materials, before the response became stable within $\pm$1%. This work demonstrates that EMTs are a good candidate for future muon monitoring at T2K, and may also have other more general applications.

Abstract We investigate whether the Type Ibn supernova SN 2023uqf, reported close in time and direction to the ∼442 TeV IceCube alert IC-231004A, is physically consistent with a shock–circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction scenario. One-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamic calculations with STELLA reproduce the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) optical light curves with a dense, helium-rich CSM following ρ CSM  ∝  r −3 and CSM density parameter . Using the shock evolution and CSM conditions obtained from the optical-fit radiation-hydrodynamic model, we model time-dependent cosmic-ray acceleration and hadronic neutrino production during the interaction phase. In our fiducial model, the inferred shock and CSM properties open a short-lived window in which multi-PeV hadron acceleration and efficient hadronic interactions can coexist. Additional loss-limited effects could reduce the high-energy cutoff, but the model provides a useful optical-to-neutrino consistency test for a transient PeVatron-like phase. After folding the predicted neutrino emission through the IceCube effective area, we obtain an expected number of ∼10 −5 –10 −4 track-like events at d = 723 Mpc, depending on the alert selection. In the low-count regime, the model predicts a detection-time weighting for a rare event, and the detection time of IC-231004A falls within the high-weight interval, while its energy scale is compatible with the modeled spectrum. Although a single event cannot establish a definitive association, our results show that the optically inferred environment of SN 2023uqf can satisfy the basic timing and energy requirements for a transient PeVatron-like phase in the fiducial model and illustrate how interaction-powered Type Ibn supernovae can be tested as high-energy neutrino sources.

Abstract We report the search result for the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background (DSNB) in neutrino energies beyond 9.3 MeV in the gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector with a 22,500 × 956.2 m 3 day exposure. Starting in the summer of 2020, SK introduced 0.01% gadolinium (Gd) by mass into its ultrapure water to enhance the neutron capture signal, termed the SK-VI phase. This was followed by a 0.03% Gd-loading in 2022, a phase referred to as SK-VII. We then conducted a DSNB search using 552.2 days of SK-VI data and 404.0 days of SK-VII data through 2023 September. This analysis includes several new features, such as two new machine learning neutron detection algorithms with Gd, an improved atmospheric background-reduction technique, and two parallel statistical approaches. No significant excess over background predictions was found in a DSNB spectrum-independent analysis, and 90% confidence level (C.L.) upper limits on the astrophysical electron antineutrino flux were set. Additionally, a spectral fitting result exhibited a ∼1.2 σ disagreement with a null DSNB hypothesis, comparable to a previous result from 5823 days of all SK pure-water phases.

Abstract The nuclear interaction model plays an essential role in understanding neutrino-nucleus interactions in large-scale neutrino detectors. For example, in the Super-Kamiokande experiment, systematic uncertainties regarding atmospheric neutrino interactions on oxygen limit the sensitivity to some physics studies, such as the diffuse supernova neutrino background search. Reduction of such uncertainties necessitates an accurate modeling of nuclear reactions and subsequent nuclear deexcitation. For this purpose, a detailed study was performed by comparing various combinations of simulation models with the newly released neutron experimental data. From this study, it is found that the combination of INCL++ and NucDeEx implemented in a Geant4-based simulation shows a better agreement with the experimental data. The presented result will be referred to improve the future physics studies at neutrino detectors, including the current focus of Super-Kamiokande.
