    <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p> Elevated carbon dioxide ( <jats:italic>e</jats:italic> CO <jats:sub>2</jats:sub> ) induces various plant physiological, biochemical and morphological modifications by providing extra carbon and altering tissue nutrient composition and biomass allocation, which can influence ecological processes such as plant-insect interactions. In this study, a literature review was conducted to examine how <jats:italic>e</jats:italic> CO <jats:sub>2</jats:sub> could potentially influence plant-herbivore insect interactions. Studies suggested that <jats:italic>e</jats:italic> CO <jats:sub>2</jats:sub> decreases foliar nitrogen and increases leaf toughness, leaf biomass, and the carbon to-nitrogen ratio in plants. This in turn alters foliar chemistry and can significantly decrease the relative growth rate and consequently pupal or nymphal weight, which could exert an influence on the adult. Hence, the herbivore performance can be decreased. The changes in the plant nutritional quality can also result in compensatory feeding as a result of the reduction of food quality. This consequently leads to an increased defoliation rate, which results in altered leaf chemical composition with enhanced secondary metabolites, including defense compounds and toxins. This increases the risk for larvae in their early instars, whose growth and development are more sensitive to the disruptive effects of toxins, compared to the late-instar larvae. Altogether, these effects may modify the overall abundance of the herbivorous species. An emerging hypothesis is that <jats:italic>e</jats:italic> CO <jats:sub>2</jats:sub> downgrades the nutritional quality more in C3 than in C4 plant species, facilitating herbivorous insect species to escalate their feeding stress on C3 plants by increasing food intake which is considered a behavioral adaptation to compensate for the reduced leaf quality (and protein content) relative to C4 species. However, this hypothesis warrants confirmation and cannot be generalized at present. </jats:p>

    <jats:p>Although orthopteran species have often been regarded as polyphagous herbivores, most of them show variable degrees of diet selectivity and particular food preferences. Still some species possess peculiar feeding categories which need further investigation. An assemblage of 43 orthopteran species, 7 families, 12 subfamilies and 13 tribes was surveyed from five grasslands in Sendai City, Japan to investigate their feeding preferences and were classified into seven main feeding categories based on examination of morpho-mandibular characteristics and postmortem gut content analyses. The forbivorous category was the most dominant, whereas the herbivorous the least common.</jats:p>

    <jats:p>Although adult feeding habits and food requirements are currently and reasonably well known for many coleopteran species, still some carabid species are with peculiar feeding guilds. Although many studies have shown a relationship between morphology of mandibles and feeding behavior in different taxal group, still many aspects concerning the feeding behavior of carabids are promising. An assemblage of carabid species was collected from Kakuma Campus grassland in Kanazawa City, Japan. These species were represented by five subfamilies and nine tribes where the highest number of tribes (3 tribes) was confined to subfamily Harpalinae. The collected carabid assemblage was subjected to mandibular analysis and being categorized into two main groups; carnivorous and omnivorous species. Homologies among mandibular characteristics and functional adaptations of the mandible were also proposed to explore how the interaction network of carabids can affect their behavior in different habitats.</jats:p>

    <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>Ground-level ozone (O<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>) is a widespread air pollutant causing extensive injuries in plants. However, its effects on perennial energy crops remain poorly understood due to technical difficulties in cultivating fast-growing shrubs for biomass production under O<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> treatment on the field. Here we present the results of a two-year evaluation in the framework of which willow (<jats:italic>Salix sachalinensis</jats:italic> F. Schmid) shrubs were exposed to ambient (AOZ) or elevated (EOZ) O<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> in two successive growing seasons (2014, 2015) and treated with 0 (EDU0) or 400 mg L<jats:sup>−1</jats:sup> (EDU400) ethylenediurea spray in the second growing season. In 2014, EOZ altered the chemical composition of both top young and fallen leaves, and a novel mechanism of decreasing Mg in fallen leaves while highly enriching it in young top leaves was revealed in shrubs exposed to EOZ. In 2015, EDU400 alleviated EOZ-induced decreases in leaf fresh mass to dry mass ratio (FM/DM) and leaf mass per area (LMA). While EDU400 protected against EOZ-induced suppression of the maximum rate at which leaves can fix carbon (<jats:italic>A</jats:italic><jats:sub><jats:italic>max</jats:italic></jats:sub>) in O<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>-asymptomatic leaves, it did not alleviate EOZ-induced suppression of the maximum rates of carboxylation (<jats:italic>V</jats:italic><jats:sub><jats:italic>Cmax</jats:italic></jats:sub>) and electron transport (<jats:italic>J</jats:italic><jats:sub><jats:italic>max</jats:italic></jats:sub>) and chlorophylls <jats:italic>a</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>b</jats:italic>, and <jats:italic>a</jats:italic> + <jats:italic>b</jats:italic> in the same type of leaves. In O<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>-symptomatic leaves, however, EDU400 alleviated EOZ-induced suppression of chlorophylls <jats:italic>a</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>a</jats:italic> + <jats:italic>b</jats:italic>, indicating different mode of action of EDU between O<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>-asymptomatic and O<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>-symptomatic leaves. Extensive herbivory occurred only in AOZ-exposed plants, leading to suppressed biomass production, while EOZ also led to a similar suppression of biomass production (EDU0 × EOZ vs. EDU400 × EOZ). In 2016, carry-over effects were also evaluated following cropping and transplantation into new ambient plots. Effects of EOZ in the preceding growing seasons extended to the third growing season in the form of suppressed ratoon biomass production, indicating carry-over effect of EOZ. Although EDU400 protected against EOZ-induced suppression of biomass production when applied in 2015, there was no carry-over effect of EDU in the absence of EDU treatment in 2016. The results of this study provide novel mechanistic understandings of O<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> and EDU modes of action and can enlighten cultivation of willow as energy crop.</jats:p>

  8. Mandibular Structure, Gut Contents Analysis and Feeding Group of Orthopteran Species Collected from Different Habitats of Satoyama Area within Kanazawa City, Japan

    <jats:p>A study was conducted on assemblies of various orthopteran species from distinct habitats in the Satoyama region, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, and a total of 50 distinct orthopteran species were registered. These species were represented by 10 families and were belonged to 17 subfamilies and 27 tribes. Results based on stereo-microscopic examination of the mandibular morphology and the analysis of gut contents suggested seven proposed feeding groups for these collected orthopteran species. Among the examined subfamilies, family Tettigoniidae proved to be the most diverse in mandibular structure and four feeding groups were assigned. This was followed by family Acrididae, which showed three feeding groups. Other families contained only single feeding group. It was noted that only five species, from family Acrididae, were graminivorous with their mandibles characterized by comparatively very short incisors and relatively wide molar regions. The analysis of gut contents of these five species proved to contain more than 80% monocotyledonous plant species. Predation and scavenging as feeding habits were also recorded in some orthopteran species.</jats:p>
