Abstract A dynamical rearrangement in the electronic structure of a molecule can be driven by different phenomena, including nuclear motion, electronic coherence or electron correlation. Recording such electronic dynamics and identifying its fate in an aqueous solution has remained a challenge. Here, we reveal the electronic dynamics induced by electronic relaxation through conical intersections in both isolated and solvated pyrazine molecules using X-ray spectroscopy. We show that the ensuing created dynamics corresponds to a cyclic rearrangement of the electronic structure around the aromatic ring. Furthermore, we found that such electronic dynamics were entirely suppressed when pyrazine was dissolved in water. Our observations confirm that conical intersections can create electronic dynamics that are not directly excited by the pump pulse and that aqueous solvation can dephase them in less than 40 fs. These results have implications for the investigation of electronic dynamics created during light-induced molecular dynamics and shed light on their susceptibility to aqueous solvation.

Abstract High-harmonic spectroscopy is an all-optical nonlinear technique with inherent attosecond temporal resolution. It has been applied to a variety of systems in the gas phase and solid state. Here we extend its use to liquid samples. By studying high-harmonic generation over a broad range of wavelengths and intensities, we show that the cut-off energy is independent of the wavelength beyond a threshold intensity and that it is a characteristic property of the studied liquid. We explain these observations with a semi-classical model based on electron trajectories that are limited by the electron scattering. This is further confirmed by measurements performed with elliptically polarized light and with ab-initio time-dependent density functional theory calculations. Our results propose high-harmonic spectroscopy as an all-optical approach for determining the effective mean free paths of slow electrons in liquids. This regime is extremely difficult to access with other methodologies, but is critical for understanding radiation damage to living tissues. Our work also indicates the possibility of resolving subfemtosecond electron dynamics in liquids offering an all-optical approach to attosecond spectroscopy of chemical processes in their native liquid environment.

Abstract Proton transfer is one of the most fundamental events in aqueous-phase chemistry and an emblematic case of coupled ultrafast electronic and structural dynamics1,2. Disentangling electronic and nuclear dynamics on the femtosecond timescales remains a formidable challenge, especially in the liquid phase, the natural environment of biochemical processes. Here we exploit the unique features of table-top water-window X-ray absorption spectroscopy3–6 to reveal femtosecond proton-transfer dynamics in ionized urea dimers in aqueous solution. Harnessing the element specificity and the site selectivity of X-ray absorption spectroscopy with the aid of ab initio quantum-mechanical and molecular-mechanics calculations, we show how, in addition to the proton transfer, the subsequent rearrangement of the urea dimer and the associated change of the electronic structure can be identified with site selectivity. These results establish the considerable potential of flat-jet, table-top X-ray absorption spectroscopy7,8 in elucidating solution-phase ultrafast dynamics in biomolecular systems.

Abstract Extreme ultraviolet high-harmonic generation (HHG) from bulk liquids has only recently been demonstrated (T.T. Luu, Z. Yin et al, Nat. Comm. 9, 3724, (2018)). This has opened new prospects for the development of bright high-harmonic sources and the development of liquid-phase high-harmonic spectroscopy (HHS). Here, we report on the first observation of HHG in liquids driven by few-cycle (∼7 fs) pulses. We observe the emission of a broad quasi-continuum in the extreme ultraviolet, which is strongly modulated on a photon-energy scale much finer than the central photon energy of the driver. We show that these modulations arise from an etalon effect inside the flat microjet, which we use to perform an in-operando measurement of the flat-jet’s thickness. The possibility to directly characterize flat microjets during HHG will greatly support their optimization for light-source applications and facilitate the development of liquid-phase HHS.

Abstract High–harmonic generation (HHG) in gases has been the main enabling technology of attosecond science since its discovery. Recently, HHG from solids has been demonstrated, opening a lively area of research. In contrast, harmonic generation from liquids has so far remained restricted to low harmonics in the visible regime. Here, we report the observation and detailed characterization of extreme ultraviolet HHG from liquid water and several alcohols extending beyond 20 eV. This advance was enabled by the implementation of the recent liquid flat–microjet technology, which we show to facilitate the spatial separation of HHG from the bulk liquid and the surrounding gas phase. We observe striking differences between the HHG spectra of water and several alcohols. A comparison with a strongly–driven few–band model establishes the sensitivity of HHG to the electronic structure of liquids. Our results suggest liquid–phase high–harmonic spectroscopy as a new method for studying the electronic structure and ultrafast scattering processes in liquids.

Abstract We demonstrate and explore computational imaging by reflection zone plates (RZPs) in the soft X-ray range at, e.g., 395 eV. Though they violate the sine condition, point-to-point focusing RZPs are capable of low off-axis aberrations if the acceptance angle is constrained to ≈ 25 mrad in the horizontal (H) and 4 mrad in the dispersive, vertical (V) direction, at which a 10 µm line focus is used to scan the sample in one dimension (1-D). For an object with an angular diameter of 2.5 mrad, simulations predict a spatial resolution of 7 µm, at a (+1)st order diffraction efficiency of 13 %. The spherical RZP substrate supports complementary wide-band, parallel spectroscopy in the water window between the C and O K-edge, at a resolving power E/ΔE ≈ (1 – 4) × 103 for an incoherent source of 3 × 1 µm2 (H × V).

Dissociation upon sulfur K-shell excitation or ionization of SF6 is studied by sulfur L-shell emission spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation and multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations of emission energies and transition rates. The decay path involves in particular Auger emission with the ejection of one or more electrons, leading to singly or multiply charged intermediate states. Nevertheless, the results of the study show that the observed photon emission at 151–152 eV following excitation at 2485–2489 eV originates dominantly from transitions in neutral sulfur. This clearly indicates that the central atom retains its electrons in a dissociation process where all fluorine atoms detach before the S 2p decay. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) is an ideal X-ray spectroscopy method to push the combination of energy and time resolutions to the Fourier transform ultimate limit, because it is unaffected by the core-hole lifetime energy broadening. Also, in pump–probe experiments the interaction time is made very short by the same core-hole lifetime. RIXS is very photon hungry so it takes great advantage from high-repetition-rate pulsed X-ray sources like the European XFEL. The Heisenberg RIXS instrument is designed for RIXS experiments in the soft X-ray range with energy resolution approaching the Fourier and the Heisenberg limits. It is based on a spherical grating with variable line spacing and a position-sensitive 2D detector. Initially, two gratings were installed to adequately cover the whole photon energy range. With optimized spot size on the sample and small pixel detector the energy resolution can be better than 40 meV (90 meV) at any photon energy below 1000 eV with the high-resolution (high-transmission) grating. At the SCS instrument of the European XFEL the spectrometer can be easily positioned thanks to air pads on a high-quality floor, allowing the scattering angle to be continuously adjusted over the 65–145° range. It can be coupled to two different sample interaction chambers, one for liquid jets and one for solids, each state-of-the-art equipped and compatible for optical laser pumping in collinear geometry. The measured performances, in terms of energy resolution and count rate on the detector, closely match design expectations. The Heisenberg RIXS instrument has been open to public users since the summer of 2022.

Abstract Warm dense matter is at the boundary between a plasma and a condensed phase and plays a role in astrophysics, planetary science and inertial confinement fusion research. However, its electronic structure and ionic structure upon irradiation with strong laser pulses remain poorly understood. Here, we use an intense and ultrafast X-ray free-electron laser pulse to simultaneously create and characterize warm dense copper using L-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy over a large irradiation intensity range. Below a pulse intensity of 1015 W cm−2, an absorption peak below the L edge appears, originating from transient depletion of the 3d band. This peak shifts to lower energy with increasing intensity, indicating the movement of the 3d band upon strong X-ray excitation. At higher intensities, substantial ionization and collisions lead to the transition from reverse saturable absorption to saturable absorption of the X-ray free-electron laser pulse, two nonlinear effects that hold promise for X-ray pulse-shaping. We employ theoretical calculations that combine a model based on kinetic Boltzmann equations with finite-temperature real-space density-functional theory to interpret these observations. The results can be used to benchmark non-equilibrium models of electronic structure in warm dense matter.

The parent compound BaBiO3 of bismuthate high-temperature superconductors (HTSCs) BaBi(Pb)O3 and Ba(K)BiO3 with perovskitelike structure exhibits unusual electronic and structural properties, which can be satisfactorily explained if we assume that all charge carriers are in the paired state. However, the prior experiments and the first-principle calculations only indirectly indicate the existence of paired charge carriers in BaBiO3. In this work, we report the direct evidence of initially paired electrons and holes in the upper antibonding Bi 6s−O2pσ* orbital of the neighboring octahedral complexes in the ground state of BaBiO3 using the time-resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to monitor the electron dynamics after the femtosecond resonant 633 nm laser excitation. We observe strong changes in the oxygen K-edge XAS preedge region, defined by the Bi6s−O2pσ* orbitals. We interpret them as a fast (≤0.3 ps) breaking of charge carrier pairs and slower (0.3–0.8 ps) lattice rearrangement from the distorted monoclinic structure into the new metastable state with a cubic lattice, which persists at least up to 60 ps after the excitation. Analysis of the intermediate state at the fast excitation shows that the bond disproportionation and monoclinic distortion of BaBiO3 structure are energetically favorable due to the charge carrier pairing. Thus the compound BaBiO3 forms a new quantum state that we define as a local pair density wave. Taking into account a large number of similarities between bismuthate and cuprate high-temperature superconductors, we believe that our work will give a new impetus to understanding the nature of superconductivity in perovskite HTSCs. Alignment of each optical element at a synchrotron beamline takes days, even weeks, for each experiment costing valuable beam time. Evolutionary algorithms (EAs), efficient heuristic search methods based on Darwinian evolution, can be utilized for multi-objective optimization problems in different application areas. In this study, the flux and spot size of a synchrotron beam are optimized for two different experimental setups including optical elements such as lenses and mirrors. Calculations were carried out with the X-ray Tracer beamline simulator using swarm intelligence (SI) algorithms and for comparison the same setups were optimized with EAs. The EAs and SI algorithms used in this study for two different experimental setups are the Genetic Algorithm (GA), Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Artificial Bee Colony (ABC). While one of the algorithms optimizes the lens position, the other focuses on optimizing the focal distances of Kirkpatrick–Baez mirrors. First, mono-objective evolutionary algorithms were used and the spot size or flux values checked separately. After comparison of mono-objective algorithms, the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm NSGA-II was run for both objectives – minimum spot size and maximum flux. Every algorithm configuration was run several times for Monte Carlo simulations since these processes generate random solutions and the simulator also produces solutions that are stochastic. The results show that the PSO algorithm gives the best values over all setups.

Following the rapid growth in accelerator-based light sources research since the mid of 20th century, miscellaneous 3rd generation Synchrotron Radiation (SR) facilities such as SSRL, APS, ESRF, PETRA-III and SPring-8 have come into existence. These SR source facilities provide 10^20 to 10^25 photons/s/mrad^2/mm^2/0.1%BW peak brightness within the photon energy range of 10-10^5 eV. Since different measurement techniques are utilized at X-ray beamlines of SR facilities, many kinds of Insertion Devices (i.e. undulators and wigglers) and optical components (e.g. High Resolution Monochromators (HRM), Double Crystal Monochromators (DCM), lenses, mirrors etc.) are employed for each experimental setup as a matter of course. Under the circumstances, optimization of a synchrotron beamline is a big concern for many scientists to ensure required radiation characteristics (i.e. photon flux, spot size, photon energy etc.) for dedicated user experiments. In this respect, an in-vacuum hybrid undulator driven by a 6 GeV synchrotron electron beam, is optimized using Evolutionary Algorithms (EA). Finally, it is shown that EA results are well-consistent with both the literature and the analytical calculations, resulting in a promising design estimation for beamline scientists.

Free-electron lasers provide bright, ultrashort, and monochromatic x-ray pulses, enabling novel spectroscopic measurements not only with femtosecond temporal resolution: The high fluence of their x-ray pulses can also easily enter the regime of the non-linear x-ray–matter interaction. Entering this regime necessitates a rigorous analysis and reliable prediction of the relevant non-linear processes for future experiment designs. Here, we show non-linear changes in the L3-edge absorption of metallic nickel thin films, measured with fluences up to 60 J/cm2. We present a simple but predictive rate model that quantitatively describes spectral changes based on the evolution of electronic populations within the pulse duration. Despite its simplicity, the model reaches good agreement with experimental results over more than three orders of magnitude in fluence, while providing a straightforward understanding of the interplay of physical processes driving the non-linear changes. Our findings provide important insights for the design and evaluation of future high-fluence free-electron laser experiments and contribute to the understanding of non-linear electron dynamics in x-ray absorption processes in solids at the femtosecond timescale.

High-harmonic generation (HHG) in liquids is opening new opportunities for attosecond light sources and attosecond time-resolved studies of dynamics in the liquid phase. In gas-phase HHG, few-cycle pulses are routinely used to create isolated attosecond pulses and to extend the cut-off energy. Here, we study the properties of HHG in liquids, including heavy water, ethanol and isopropanol, by continuously tuning the pulse duration of a mid-infrared driver from the multi- to the two-cycle regime. Similar to the gas phase, we observe the transition from discrete odd-order harmonics to continuous extreme-ultraviolet emission. However, the cut-off energy is shown to be entirely independent of the pulse duration. These observations are confirmed by ab-initio simulations of HHG in large liquid clusters. Our results support the notion that the cut-off energy is a fundamental property of the liquid, independent of the driving-pulse properties. Our work implies that few-cycle mid-infrared laser pulses are suitable drivers for generating isolated attosecond pulses from liquids and confirm the capability of high-harmonic spectroscopy to determine the mean-free paths of slow electrons in liquids.

The pulse intensity from X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) can create extreme excitation densities in solids, entering the regime of non-linear X-ray-matter interactions. We show L3-edge absorption spectra of metallic nickel thin films with fluences entering a regime where several X-ray photons are incident per absorption cross-section. Main features of the observed non-linear spectral changes are described with a predictive rate model for electron population dynamics during the pulse, utilizing a fixed density of states and tabulated ground-state properties.

Attosecond science is well developed for atoms and promising results have been obtained for molecules and solids. Here, we review the first steps in developing attosecond time-resolved measurements in liquids. These advances provide access to time-domain studies of electronic dynamics in the natural environment of chemical reactions and biological processes. We concentrate on two techniques that are representative of the two main branches of attosecond science: pump-probe measurements using attosecond pulses and high-harmonic spectroscopy (HHS). In the first part, we discuss attosecond photoelectron spectroscopy with cylindrical microjets and its application to measure time delays between liquid and gaseous water. We present the experimental techniques, the new data-analysis methods and the experimental results. We describe in detail the conceptual and theoretical framework required to fully describe attosecond chronoscopy in liquids at a quantum-mechanical level. This includes photoionization delays, scattering delays, as well as a coherent description of electron transport and (laser-assisted) pho toemission and scattering. As a consequence, we show that attosecond chronoscopy of liquids is, in general, sensitive to both types of delays, as well as the electron mean-free paths. Through detailed modeling, involving state-of-the-art quantum scattering and Monte-Carlo trajectory methods, we show that the photoionization delays dominate in attosecond chronoscopy of liquid water at photon energies of 20-30 eV. This conclusion is supported by a near-quantitative agreement between experiment and theory. In the second part, we introduce HHS of liquids based on flat microjets. These results represent the first observation of high-harmonic generation (HHG) in liquids extending well beyond the visible into the extreme-ultraviolet regime.

A novel experimental setup is presented for resonant inelastic X-ray scattering investigations of solid and liquid samples in the soft X-ray region for studying the complex electronic configuration of (bio)chemical systems. The uniqueness of the apparatus is its high flexibility combined with optimal energy resolution and energy range ratio. The apparatus enables investigation of chemical analyses, which reflects the chemical imprints. The endstation is composed of a main sample chamber, a sample holder for either solid or liquid jet delivery system, and a soft X-ray grating spectrometer for 210–1250 eV with a resolving power of ∼1000. It combines for the first time liquid jet technology with a soft X-ray spectrometer based on the variable line spacing principle. This setup was commissioned at the soft X-ray beamline P04 at PETRA III of the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron in Hamburg which is currently the most brilliant storage-ring-based X-ray radiation source in the world. The first results of liquid and solid samples show that this setup allows the detection of photons across an energy range of ∼300 eV. This covers simultaneously the emission lines of life-important elements like carbon, nitrogen and oxygen in a shot-based procedure.
