略歴：1984年北海道生まれ。北海道大学医学部保健学科作業療法学専攻卒業（作業療法士免許取得）。東北大学大学院医学系研究科博士後期課程修了（博士（障害科学））。京都大学こころの未来研究センター（現・人と社会の未来研究院）JSPS特別研究員PD、東北福祉大学感性福祉研究所特任講師、英国ヨーク大学心理学部およびサウサンプトン大学心理学部JSPS海外特別研究員、高知工科大学フューチャー・デザイン研究所講師を経て、2023年より現職。専門は社会神経科学・社会心理学。リアルワールド・パラダイムを用いたヒトのコミュニケーションに関わる認知・神経メカニズムの研究を基盤に、近年は地域における居場所づくり（「コミュニティー・シェッド」「メンズ・シェッド」など）を中心とした社会的孤立・孤独の一次予防に関する実践・効果検証・基礎研究に取り組む（JST-RISTEX「シチズンサポートプロジェクトによる社会的孤立・孤独の一次予防」（内閣府第3回総合知活用事例採択）、JSPS海外連携研究「コミュニティーを基盤とした孤独・孤立予防の国際研究拠点」など）。日本コミュニティー・シェッド協会創立者・代表理事、国際コンソーシアムInternational Centre for Community-based Loneliness Prevention (ICCLP) Founder, Executive Director。これまでに第22回（令和7年度）日本学術振興会賞、令和6年度科学技術分野の文部科学大臣表彰若手科学者賞などを受賞。

Biography: Ayahito Ito was born in Hokkaido in 1984. He graduated from the School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Hokkaido University (licensed occupational therapist), and received his Ph.D. in Disability Science from the Graduate School of Medicine, Tohoku University. He subsequently served as a JSPS Research Fellow (PD) at the Kokoro Research Center, Kyoto University (now the Institute for the Future of Human Society), a Specially Appointed Lecturer at the Kansei Fukushi Research Institute, Tohoku Fukushi University, and a JSPS Overseas Research Fellow at the Department of Psychology, University of York, and the Department of Psychology, University of Southampton. He later worked as a Lecturer at the Research Institute for Future Design, Kochi University of Technology, before assuming his current position in 2023. His research specializes in social neuroscience and social psychology. Building on studies of the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying human communication, his recent work focuses on the creation of inclusive community spaces (“Community Sheds” and “Men’s Sheds”) and the primary prevention of social isolation and loneliness. He has been engaged in practical initiatives, evaluation studies, and basic research in this field, including the JST-RISTEX project “Citizen Support Project for Preventing Social Isolation and Loneliness” (adopted as a Cabinet Office Comprehensive Knowledge Utilization Case, 3rd round), and the JSPS Fund for the Promotion of Joint International Research (International Collaborative Research) “An International Research Hub for Community-based Prevention of Loneliness and Social Isolation.” He is the Founder and Chair of the Japan Community Sheds Association, and the Founder and Executive Director of the international consortium International Centre for Community-based Loneliness Prevention (ICCLP). His awards include the JSPS Prize (2025), the MEXT Young Scientists’ Prize (2024) among others.

Effectively reducing climate change requires marked, global behavior change. However, it is unclear which strategies are most likely to motivate people to change their climate beliefs and behaviors. Here, we tested 11 expert-crowdsourced interventions on four climate mitigation outcomes: beliefs, policy support, information sharing intention, and an effortful tree-planting behavioral task. Across 59,440 participants from 63 countries, the interventions' effectiveness was small, largely limited to nonclimate skeptics, and differed across outcomes: Beliefs were strengthened mostly by decreasing psychological distance (by 2.3%), policy support by writing a letter to a future-generation member (2.6%), information sharing by negative emotion induction (12.1%), and no intervention increased the more effortful behavior-several interventions even reduced tree planting. Last, the effects of each intervention differed depending on people's initial climate beliefs. These findings suggest that the impact of behavioral climate interventions varies across audiences and target behaviors.

Our preferences are influenced by the opinions of others. The past human neuroimaging studies on social conformity have identified a network of brain regions related to social conformity that includes the posterior medial frontal cortex (pMFC), anterior insula, and striatum. Since these brain regions are also known to play important roles in reinforcement learning (i.e., processing prediction error), it was previously hypothesized that social conformity and reinforcement learning have a common neural mechanism. However, although this view is currently widely accepted, these two processes have never been directly compared; therefore, the extent to which they shared a common neural mechanism had remained unclear. This study aimed to formally test the hypothesis. The same group of participants (n = 25) performed social conformity and reinforcement learning tasks inside a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner. Univariate fMRI data analyses revealed activation overlaps in the pMFC and bilateral insula between social conflict and unsigned prediction error and in the striatum between social conflict and signed prediction error. We further conducted multivoxel pattern analysis (MVPA) for more direct evidence of a shared neural mechanism. MVPA did not reveal any evidence to support the hypothesis in any of these regions but found that activation patterns between social conflict and prediction error in these regions were largely distinct. Taken together, the present study provides no clear evidence of a common neural mechanism between social conformity and reinforcement learning.

Previous neuroimaging studies demonstrated that ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) activity reflects how much an individual positively views each person (impression). Here, we investigated whether the degree to which individuals think others positively view them (reflected impression) is similarly tracked by activity in the vmPFC by using fMRI and speed-dating events. We also examined whether activity of the vmPFC in response to the faces of others would predict the impression formed through direct interactions with them. The task consisted of three sessions: pre-speed-dating fMRI, speed-dating events, and post-speed-dating fMRI (not reported here). During the pre-speed-dating fMRI, each participant passively viewed the faces of others whom they would meet in the subsequent speed-dating events. After the fMRI, they rated the impression and reflected impression of each face. During the speed-dating events, the participants had 3-min conversations with partners whose faces were presented during the fMRI task, and they were asked to choose the partners whom they preferred at the end of the events. The results revealed that the value of both the impression and reflected impression were automatically represented in the vmPFC. However, the impression fully mediated the link between the reflected impression and vmPFC activity. These results highlight a close link between reflected appraisal and impression formation and provide important insights into neural and psychological models of how the reflected impression is formed in the human brain.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has a profound impact on our society, and health care professionals are challenged by the present outbreak. A recent study showed that a significant proportion of second-line workers and frontline workers experienced psychological distress. Although these findings suggest the possibility that rehabilitation therapists, especially those who work at the hospital, experience psychological distress, their mental health state has been largely dismissed and the number of an evidence-based practice is limited. Here, we discuss the importance of focusing on the mental health of therapists by introducing studies that focus on the mental health of health care workers during the COVID-19, SARS, and H1N1 influenza pandemics. We then noted the need to track the dynamic relationship between the mental health of therapists and the COVID-19 pandemic by employing longitudinal data collection with psychological measures that reliably and validly capture the mental health of therapists. This approach would be effective for preparation for future pandemics, as we have learned much from previous pandemics. We hope that our Tutorial Note will help readers who are interested in the mental health of rehabilitation therapists and encourage future studies.

When individuals are forced to choose between similarly preferable alternatives, a negatively arousing cognitive conflict occurs, and the preference attitudes toward the chosen and rejected alternatives diverge. This phenomenon, often referred to as "cognitive dissonance", is of interest in psychological and decision neuroscience research. The dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) is involved in representing the cognitive conflict induced by difficult-choice tasks. Previous studies have shown age-related decline of the dACC function. However, whether the heightened activity of the dACC regarding cognitive conflict, and choice-induced preference change that behaviorally occur in young subjects also occur in the elderly is unclear. Furthermore, recent studies have noted substantial methodological flaw with the free-choice paradigm that often used in studies focusing on cognitive dissonance. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a modified free-choice paradigm to formally test the effect of aging on choice-induced cognitive conflict. In the young participants, behavioral data confirmed the existence of cognitive conflict and preference change for the alternatives that they rejected in the difficult-choice trials. The imaging data revealed that the right dACC displayed an interaction effect associated with cognitive conflict. In contrast, we did not observe such effects in the elderly participants. These suggest a possibility that elderly people likely feel less cognitive dissonance.

Previous findings have revealed abnormal visual attention or processing of faces among individuals with autism spectrum condition (ASC). However, little attention has been paid to the relationship between autistic traits and neural mechanisms associated with representing facial values. Using fMRI, we investigated the patterns of brain activity in the vmPFC and VS in response to faces of elderly males, elderly females, young males, and young females. During fMRI, subjects with a relatively high autism quotient (high group) and those with a relatively low autism quotient (low group) were presented with a face and asked to rate its pleasantness. After fMRI, the subjects were presented with pairs of faces and asked to select the face that they preferred. Our results indicate a dissociable modulatory effect of autistic traits on the vmPFC and VS: The vmPFC activity in the low group was more sensitive to age differences in female faces compared to that in the high group, whereas VS activity did not show differences between groups. These results suggest that, in the BVS, autistic traits selectively modulate the vmPFC activity associated with facial value representation.

低酸素脳症後に知覚型視覚性失認と意味記憶障害を呈した患者にリハビリテーションを行った。1) 視覚弁別探索訓練，2) 彩色画マッチング訓練，3) 物品の視覚特徴を列挙した後同定を行う「誤りなし学習」訓練を順次施行した。訓練後，視覚弁別探索は速く秩序だったものになり，フォローアップまで維持された。彩色画のマッチングは改善し，別の彩色画にも般化，フォローアップまで維持された。訓練に用いた物品の同定は向上し，一部はフォローアップまで維持された。一方，訓練に用いなかった物品の視覚同定は改善せず，般化はみられなかった。しかし，訓練後の実生活で特徴列挙後の同定が習慣となり，十分な繰り返しの後には，個々の物品の同定は向上する様子がみられた。以上，生活に重要な物品を選んで行うならば，その物品に限っては訓練の有効性があることが示唆された。

社会的孤立・孤独は、さまざまな疾患のリスク因子となっており、孤立・孤独を生まない体制や社会の構築は喫緊の課題であるが、十分な体制が構築されているとはいえず、社会の理解も進んでいるとは言い難い現状がある。このため、当事者は自身の気持ちを表出することに抵抗感を感じてしまう。また、孤立・孤独予防を目的とした活動を含め、高齢者が集う地域の場で男性が少ないことが、全国共通の課題になっている。その背景として、既存の地域の場が「男らしさやニーズに十分な配慮をしないまま運営されてきた」ことが挙げられる。本プロジェクトでは、「シチズンサポートプロジェクト」として、a)高齢男性向けの新たな居場所(コミュニティー・シェッド)の立ち上げ、b)孤立リスクを簡便に可視化できるツール(社会的つながり可視化ツール)の開発を通し、コミュニティー・シェッドを運営するとともに、その効果を検証する。具体的には、プロジェクト期間内に熊本県水上村および北海道札幌市においてコミュニティー・シェッドを立ち上げ、社会的孤立・孤独の一次予防システムとして有効に機能するか、フィールド調査および心理・脳・健康の調査から検証する。また、「社会的つながり可視化ツール」をコミュニティー・シェッドの効果検証に活用するとともに、地域の支援者や医療専門職が住民の孤立・孤独リスクのスクリーニングや地域診断に活用できるツールとして社会実装することを目指す。これらを通じて、日本独自のコミュニティー・シェッドの在り方を提案し、実践と研究の両輪で高齢者の社会的孤立・孤独に立ち向かい、望まない孤立・孤独を未然に防ぐ取り組み、すなわち一次予防システムの構築につなげる。

本研究では、他者の顔に対する印象の情報を処理する際の脳活動および顔に対する印象が、実際にその顔の人物と会話をした際に抱く印象を予測するか、機能的磁気共鳴画像法（fMRI）と行動課題を用いて検討した。その結果、事前に取得した相手の顔に対する印象評定値は、その相手と実際に会話をした際の印象を有意に予測する一方、fMRI課題時に得られた各々の顔に対する脳活動情報は会話課題における印象を有意に予測しないことが明らかとなった。

本研究では、同じ人物の顔を複数回呈示する単純接触効果のパラダイムとfMRI（functional magnetic resonance imaging）を併用した検討を行った。本研究では、顔を意識できる場合（閾上呈示条件）と顔を意識できない場合（閾下呈示条件）それぞれにおいて同一の顔を複数回提示し、顔に対する選好がどの脳領域において表象されているか検討した。閾上呈示条件における選好に関わる脳領域を検討した結果、眼窩前頭皮質、腹側線条体及び後方領域の関与が示唆された。閾下呈示条件における選好に関わる脳領域を検討した結果、背内側前頭前野及び前部帯状回の関与が示唆された。
非侵襲的脳機能画像法による他者の顔の価値表象に関わる神経機構の解明競争的資金

高齢者における顔の価値表象に関わる神経機構の検討について、本年度は機能的磁気共鳴画像法（functional magnetic resonance imaging: fMRI）により得られた脳活動データの解析を終了し、論文執筆の最終段階に入ることができた。脳活動データの解析から、高齢者においても腹内側前頭前野が他者の顔の価値表象に重要な役割を果たしていることが明らかとなったが、加齢の効果には性差が認められた。具体的には、高齢女性よりも高齢男性で加齢の効果が顕著であることが明らかとなった。また、本年度は他者の顔に対する価値表象機構の検討に関連し、腹内側前頭前野と背内側前頭前野の機能的役割が意識的に顔を見ることができる場合と、意識的には顔を見ることができない場合で異なることを報告した（Ito et al., Human Brain Mapping, DOI: 10.1002/hbm.22813）。具体的には、腹内側前頭前野は意識的に顔を見ることができる場合のみに、選好を反映する価値表象を行っている一方で、背内側前頭前野は意識的に顔を見ることができない場合のみに、選好を反映する価値表象を行っていることが明らかとなった。これらの知見は、顔の価値表象に関わる神経機構が、①生物学的な要因によって変容すること、②呈示された顔を意識できるかどうかによって、腹内側前頭前野と背内側前頭前野が独立に価値を表象し、選好を反映している可能性を示唆するものである。ここまでの検討に予想以上の時間を要したため、自閉症者を対象とした実験は実施できなかったが、今回明らかになった知見は、今後の研究の発展にに資するものであったと考えられる。
